Editorial Review Product Description This richly illustrated book presents a comprehensive assessment of the display of Maori culture from the nineteenth century to today. In doing so, Exhibiting Maori traces the long journey from curio, to specimen, artifact, art and taonga (treasure). Drawing on extensive and groundbreaking research, Exhibiting Maori reveals for the first time the remarkable story of Maori resistance to, involvement in, and eventual capture of the display of their culture. Ranging across museums, world fairs, fine art, and tourism, Exhibiting Maori fuses museum studies, anthropology, and visual and material culture to uncover a history of active Maori engagement with the colonial culture of display. |

Editorial Review Product Description Kaitiakitanga, an ancient Maori concept meaning guardianship of the land,” has undergone a revival in New Zealand and is fueling an increasingly popular eco-movement. Structured by Richard Bangs as a grand adventure, this book looks at how the Maori way is becoming the modern way. Bangs’ expedition includes heli-hiking, ice-climbing, kayaking, and more as he travels through New Zealand’s stunning landscapes. Along the way, the author encounters threatened wildlife, massive trees that predate Christ, monumental glaciers, and the kinds of advances fostered by kaitiakitanga, from radically designed eco-lodges to paradigm-shifting native ventures. |

Editorial Review Product Description Blood Narrative is a comparative literary and cultural study of post-World War II literary and activist texts by New Zealand Maori and American Indians—groups who share much in their responses to European settler colonialism. Chadwick Allen reveals the complex narrative tactics employed by writers and activists in these societies that enabled them to realize unprecedented practical power in making both their voices and their own sense of indigeneity heard. Allen shows how both Maori and Native Americans resisted the assimilationist tide rising out of World War II and how, in the 1960s and 1970s, they each experienced a renaissance of political and cultural activism and literary production that culminated in the formation of the first general assembly of the World Council of Indigenous Peoples. He focuses his comparison on two fronts: first, the blood/land/memory complex that refers to these groups' struggles to define indigeneity and to be freed from the definitions of authenticity imposed by dominant settler cultures. Allen's second focus is on the discourse of treaties between American Indians and the U.S. government and between Maori and Great Britain, which he contends offers strong legal and moral bases from which these indigenous minorities can argue land and resource rights as well as cultural and identity politics. With its implicit critique of multiculturalism and of postcolonial studies that have tended to neglect the colonized status of indigenous First World minorities, Blood Narrative will appeal to students and scholars of literature, American and European history, multiculturalism, postcolonialism, and comparative cultural studies. |
19. Buying the Land, Selling the Land: Govts & Maori Land in the North Island 1865-1921 by Richard Boast | |
![]() | Paperback: 500
Pages

list price: US$37.95 -- used & new: US$37.59 (price subject to change: see help) Asin: 0864735618 Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France | Japan |
Editorial Review Product Description Studying Crown Maori land policy and practice in the period 1869–1929, from the establishment of the Native Land Court power until the cessation of large-scale Crown purchasing by Gordon Coates, this investigation chronicles the bleak and grim tidal wave of Crown purchasing that dominated the Maori people under very difficult circumstances. While recognizing that the government purchasing of Maori land was in its own way driven by genuine, if blinkered, idealism, this work's deep research on land purchasing policy gives renewed insight on the significant politicians of the era, such as Sir Donald McLean, John Balance, and John McKenzie who were strong advocates of expanded and state-controlled land purchasing. |
