Product Description
This enlightening reference guide demystifies macrobiotics and offers the keys to unlock your bodyÂ’s self-healing mechanism and attain a more balanced condition leading to optimal health. The author, Carl Ferré, not only categorizes macrobiotic foods, cooking methods, and natural home remedies, but also explains the twelve principles of macrobiotics, the stages of illness and healing, and the art of self-diagnosis.Amazon.com Review
This small guide through the dietary principles of macrobiotics is loaded with the fundamentals of the diet, but it also offers sound advice on healthy eating. The macrobiotic diet focuses on whole grains, fresh vegetables, and natural (i.e., not refined) foods, along with the principles of yin and yang that govern the philosophy--all of which are explained clearly and succinctly: "A basic tenet of macrobiotic thinking is that all things--our bodies, foods, and everything else--are composed of yin and yang energies.... macrobiotic practice emphasizes the two food groups--grains and vegetable--that have the least pronounced yin and yang qualities, making it easier to achieve a more balanced condition within the natural order of life." Although macrobiotics is more than a diet--in fact, its principles can be applied to all areas of life--this book focuses on its applications to diet and health. A macrobiotic regimen promises many blessings, among them greater energy, relief from pain and illnesses, renewed enjoyment of food, a more fulfilling sex life, and improved sleep. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Little Guide To Macrobiotics.
The Pocket Guide To Macrobiotics is the perfect start to understanding the yin and yang of the diet.It explains the meaning of macrobiotics, the basic ideas behind the diet, how it can be used in everyday life, to heal, to gain energy, to help keep the body healthy. While published in 1997 it still makes total sense. It is flexible yet I have to warn you it will not be an easy regimen to follow at first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Don't miss this small, pocket-sized volume if you need a thorough introduction to the principles and philosophy of macrobiotics.Without including any recipes, author Carl Ferre has done an excellent job condensing the most important aspects of marcobiotics into this handy book.An easy read, keep it in your purse or jacket pocket to peruse when you have a few spare minutes.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm so glad I found this!
This book provides a great deal of information on beginning and sustaining a macrobiotic diet and is written in a clear, concise manner. It speaks positively about small dietary changes and never stoops to belittling other diets. When I bought the book, I knew absolutely nothing about the macrobiotic way of life. When I put it down, I had a good working knowledge.

Although it doesn't include any recipes, I think this book is excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Expression of the macrobiotic way of eating to date
This small pocket guide outlines food choices in diagrams displaying the relative positions of food rather than in terms of nutritional data. Nutritional quantities and percentages of food are misleading in that the imply accurate descriptions of food before it is eaten and digested. Each body is different and the macrobiotic way of eating requires considering the condition of the eater as well as the food eaten. For anyone who has encountered strange or misleading information of this grain-based diet would benefit from reading this small guide. It is well written in an easy to follow format that persuades rather than dictates. The resources and references are excellent and the price is right. ... Read more

This book is for people whose aim is health and happiness, by and for themselves. Whatever problems we want to solve, we should start with ourselves. This is the Oriental approach. A happy society must be built on happy individuals. Every person's happiness depends on his health.

Western science has also attempted to establish happiness in man. Due to the lack of the fundamental life principle, however, it has reached a state of confusion in trying to solve many problems - cancer, heart disease, diabetes, drug abuse, abortion, birth control, allergy, crime, social disorders, pollution, over-population, poverty, etc.

Macrobiotics is neither merely a way of curing illness nor a mystical Oriental cuisine. Some people think it is a brown rice diet, others that it is a means of giving up pleasure at meals. How far from the truth these ideas are! Macrobiotics is a profound understanding of the orderliness of nature, the practical application of which enables us to prepare attractive, delicious meals, and achieve a happy and free life.

Product Description
Dispelling the mystery that surrounds macrobiotic cooking, this resource shows how a macrobiotic diet--based upon local fresh vegetables and other easy-to-find ingredients--can include everything from French Onion Soup and Green Corn Tamale to Lemon-Lime Pudding Pie and Ginger Cookies. 94 illustrations.Amazon.com Review
When you think "macrobiotic," do you picture unseasoned brownrice, raw sprouts, and no taste? Abandon the stereotype, becausemacrobiotic cooking is both varied and tasty, especially with therecipes in this cookbook.

Macrobiotic cooking uses these foodgroups:
1. 30-50% of the diet is whole grains, the main staplefood: brown rice, whole wheat, oats, corn, millet, barley, rye, buckwheat, and foods made with cracked grains and whole grainflour.
2. 30-50% is vegetables, in season and grown locally whenpossible, and sea vegetables, which store and travel well.
3. 5-15% can be beans, soy foods, or occasional seafood.
4. Inmoderation: fruits, seeds, nuts.

Author Meredith McCarty iscodirector of the East-West Center for Macrobiotics in Eureka,California. She explains the basics of cooking whole grains andsoyfoods, and walks us through the use of unfamiliar ingredients suchas sea vegetables and grain beverages. Recipes include Stand-UpCabbage Sushi, Nutty Noodle Bake, Mexican Rice, Journeycakes (AmericanIndian flatbread), Green Corn Tamale Bake, Japanese Cool Noodle Salad,Baked Tempeh with Lemon-Mustard Sauce, and Lemon-Lime Pudding Pie. Farfrom an austere diet, the recipes are as hearty, ethnically varied, and tasty as they are healthy.--Joan Price ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars ..What? Oh sorry I was sleeping
Boring. recipies arent that great. If you want to do macrobiotic get a different cookbook or just load up with grains on your own. This book is not great and has many seemingly "hand drawn" pictures. I like to see color pictures of food. Call me a first grader but it makes me interested in what I am making. This is the farthest thing from intersting or delicious.

3-0 out of 5 stars ok, more theory than recipes
This book has some interesting recipes and discussion, but it is filled with lots of pictures, theory and concepts. I was only looking for a cookbook, hence the 3 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, not preachy
Unlike most cookbooks for vegetarians or health concious folks the American Macrobiotic Cookbook is full of good information, as well as delicious recipes. The illustrations are complimentary to the style of writing and it's an all around good introduction to macrobiotic cooking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information and recipes
This book is a great introduction to the various foods that are eaten according to Macrobiotic principles, in plain English. Each of the basic foods is described, along with handling and preparation information. I am looking forward to trying some of the desserts! I was worried that thisstyle of eating would be very limiting and dull but this book dispels thatidea with the variety of meals it presents. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars But I don't live in Japan!
Most folks who are interested in pursuing Macrobiotics already know that the principles were developed on the Japanese lifestyle. This booklet gives some very general advice, and was not helpful to me because it did not offer any specific ways to make the transition, or offer any substitutes for ingredients commonly found in Asia that may not be readily available in the US, or are just so rare in some regions, that they are very expensive.

Additionally, the produce in the US in most cases is not organic, and it is difficult to understand how the "energy" in your food is going to benefit the body when its "energy" is corrupted by radiation, pesticides, and modern day farming techniques that value quantity over quality.Aside from "buy organic," this booklet doesn't offer many other suggestions.

American lifestyle can make it difficult for people achieve the goals of macrobiotics on a limited budget. This book did not address my challenges on transitioning to macrobiotcs very effectively.

3-0 out of 5 stars Common sense written down.
This book was informative, but it really didn't go into much detail.I was looking for specifics.I didn't learn any thing I couldn't find out on the internet or with common sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and understand
This is a great starting point for a beginner who wants to make the transition. Itis a very non-judgemental approach and easy to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to gracefully changing to a healthier diet.
I found this an excellent, yet simple guide for gracefully changing eating habits. The book is full of suggestions that help the student to succeed. Changing from the standard American diet to macrobiotics is not somethingmost people can do overnight. This simple, easy to read and understand bookprovides practical suggestions to help one begin the long process ofgradual change, a sure way to succeed. Readers are provided with severaldegrees of dietary change that will help even the most stalwart meat-eatertransistion to a healthier way of eating. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the towering classics of the cancer-prevention diet
Despite its somewhat lurid title, this book, by a Professor of Music at Ball State University and his wife, is one of the most accessible introductions to what is said to be the cancer-prevention diet also known as macrobiotics. The Kohlers are wonderful writers and their anecdotal approach and confessional style together with their university-trained minds make for a revelatory read. Studied together with Dr. Anthony Sattilaro's book, "Recalled by Life,"they offer a unique education not in a "New Age" diet, but in the traditional approach to food that people possessed for thousands of years. The secret of this diet is its low protein/no sugar (meaning no sweets of any kind including so-called "good" sweeteners like fruit juice, honey, agave syrup, maple syrup etc.). Macrobiotics teaches that cancer cells need protein and sugar to grow; that's the great secret, often too simple forwestern minds to accept. Warning: these are my opinions. I am not an expert, only a journalist. ... Read more

This is the much awaited second cookbook of the "Love" series from the world renowned gourmet, vegan and macrobiotic "chef to the stars," Eric Lechasseur and his wife, a Whole Health Macrobiotic Counselor and Educator, Sanae Suzuki. The first book in the series, "Love, Eric" was an international success and was voted as one of the top cookbooks in 2005 by Variety Magazine. One look at this cookbook and your stomach will start to rumble. 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Food
Eric and Sanae are two of the most passionate, courageous, talented creaters of vegan macrobiotic food. The love they have for each other and for a healthy and whole life, they put that into the books they create, and you bring that into your home when you buy them. And your family (whoever your family is) digests that same love when they eat this food. Everyone in the world should have their books, even if they only make one meal a year from them. Talk about spreading world peace...

1-0 out of 5 stars So expensive and the recipes don't have all the ingredients you need
I love the cupcakes in Seed kitchen. I have bought more than 50 for sure. I really love them. I love baking and I've baked for over 10 years. I think I am pretty good. I bought this book because I wanted to do the cupcakes in my house as Seed Kitchen no longer sells the cupcakes in his store. Well, I was really disappointed because I followed exactly the recipe for the cupcakes from this book but it wasn't close at all to the taste in the restaurant. I have followed many recipes in hundreds of books and this is the first one I know there is some ingredients missing. I understand that Chefs want to keep secrets to themselves because they have worked hard for creating their recipes... However, why then selling a book for 30 dollars when you are not telling all the necessary ingredients for the recipes. And please, don't tell me baking is a science and I'm making mistakes because I'm measuring everything. Mathematics is a science and I don't think anyone makes any mistake with calculations like 2+2=4
The recipe is missing something because I've tried to bake the cupcakes many times already and nothing. If Eric answers this, I want to know what is missing or exactly tell me all the brands you use for your cooking. I spent lots of money and I don't want to hear I'm making something wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing cookbook for the fine mind and body
this book was a surprise gift for my daughter. finally I got it right and picked out something that meant a great deal to her. She loves this book. Its just the right touch of amazing inspiration and practical fine fine recipes. the authors have something here that is not that easy to find. Equally valuable to the beginner or advanced cook. Wow you wont be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious, But Need Unusual Ingredients & Tool
The recipes are healthy and delicious.

Note:

Of the 48 recipes, 11 require Kombu, 4 require Kudzu, and 4 require a Pickle Press.

Other unusual ingredients used in at least one recipe are:
hijiki, nori flakes, burdock root, grated mochi, barley miso, mirin, lotus seeds & root, shiso leaves, jinenjo root, Kukicha, umeboshi vinegar, arame, kamut spaghetti, dulse, agar flakes, Vegenaise, wakame.

Most of these are likely available at a market that sells Japanese/ Asian foods.

2-0 out of 5 stars Love, Eric & Sunae: Seasonal Macrobiotic Cuisine
I was shocked how few recipes there are in this book. Yes the photo's are pretty and well done but it is a picture book more than a recipe book. I have cooked vegan macrobiotic for a number of years and was hoping for more new recipes. The price of this book is outrageous for what it has to offer.Save you money, there are better vegan macrobiotic books out there with way more recipes!!!If I could return this book I would! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not for cancer prevention...
Sadly, Aveline Kushi has recently died - of cancer.Being that she was Japanese, the healthiest and longest lived people in the world, this doesn't really speak well for the diet.

This is a below average vegan cooking book, with a couple of really good recipes but no more. You may want it if you have strong medical reasons to stop eating meat, dairy, fruit and fresh (uncooked) vegetables.

If you are not familiar with macrobiotics beware that it caneasily become almost a religion, full of unproved, unscientific statements and has led people to sect-like behaviour. However, macrobiotics, when taken with common sense, have been known to help cancer patients, some say to the extent of "curing" them (althoug no one talks about the ones that have died of the various deficiencies that macrobiotics can easily create). Above all, follow your own instincts... and keep in touch with a trusted doctor!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Macrobiotic Way
Hi, This book "The Macrobiotic Cancer Prevention Cookbook" is very interesting, detailed and quite helpful for all who are following more healthful lifestyle. You will not find glossy photos of food in this cookbook, instead you will find incouragement for a healthy diet, cancer prevention guidelines, recipies for a seven day menu plan to get started, and the products and "how to" instructions for natural home remidies. 5-0 out of 5 stars simple, easy cooking for us NON-cooks ...
I got this because someone I know cooks from it and her miso soup is really delicious. It's an old book, but it is like a "primer" for macrobiotic cooking. For those of us who don't know how to cook but want to eat better, it's easy to follow. However, it also makes suggestions on additional ingredients for those of you who DO know how to cook and want to add a little more pizazz.

All in all a sound buy for the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A remarkable resource for those living with cancer and everybody else!

I discovered this cookbook when I was undergoing treatment for ovarian cancer eleven years ago and had decided to commit to a macrobiotic diet.It is so much more than a cookbook, written with compassion, humor and an understanding of human behavior. It is the most "accessible," reader friendlymacrobiotic cookbook I own and I've used it more often than all the rest put together. Aside from the great and easy recipes, the book is uniquely supportive and empowering.Every time I buy a new copy for myself (as mine is literally fading and falling apart) I end up giving it away to someone else!I recommend this book for those who are coping with a cancer diagnosis, for cancer survivors and for anyone interested in the relationship between what we eat and how we feel!My only wish would be for a stronger binding!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great Foundation Cookbook
This isnt just a cookbook. Its a reading book too. Along with great recipes it teaches you how to listen to your body and enjoy the pleasures of healthy eating. It gives good intuitive tips on how to cook and how to pick the food you need to eat at what time. This is a must have for a healthy eater :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Not just about the food
This book has made me look at food and the other issues you may have that effect why and what we eat. I started looking at abroader array of foods that are out there, and started eliminating some of the really unhealthy items that I see I was consuming for emotional reason, not nutritional needs. It's a cook book with feelings.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Gem
This is my favorite macrobiotic/whole foods cookbook. This is what I love about it:
-The easy-going no-guilt, listen to your body perspective
-All the suggestions for making healthier foods with similar textures, tastes and appearances as the less healthy more conventional foods
-The many charts, drawings, tables showing you how to diagnose what you need by the emotions you are feeling - ie do you need a cleansing meal or a calming one? Do you need to feel inspired or grounded? etc
-There is a variety of recipes
-Many recipes have suggestions for changing or adding things (which suits me just fine because I don't always follow recipes when I cook anyhow)

Overall, the book makes me feel good. It tells you to slow down, savor the food, pay attention to how it makes your body feel, understand the connection between emotions and weakness in your organs and also covers how to get sufficient iron, calcium etc on a non-dairy diet.

I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Macrobiotic," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Macrobiotic in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Macrobiotic when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Macrobiotic, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more
