Overall, this is very good bookwhether you are a student who wants to learn about the operating system ora programmer who wants to write applications for it. ... Read more

Book Description

For nearly a century, Granger's® has been the resource librarians and researchers trust -- "the best available general index to poetry" (Booklist). The CD-ROM, first introduced in 1991 and revised in 1995, expanded the number of ways to search the vast database to 6 and added full-text poems and excerpts. Now, it has now been expanded and updated even more, ensuring that its coverage stays up-to-the-minute and the software for accessing it remains state-of-the-art.

Features new to this release include:

•indexing of 250,000 poems -- 50,000 more than the previous release -- in 1000 anthologies and 290 volumes of collected and selected works;

•full-text searchability for 10,000 poems that appear in their entirety;

•searches by category: African-American, Asian-American, women's, children's poetry, etc.

•commentaries and bibliographies of the most-anthologized poems;

•biographies and bibliographies of hundreds of leading poets;

•a glossary offering immediate on-screen definitions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for your toolbox
The text provides insight into the structure of many OS's, which can easily be used to understand other systems.It's clear and simple to understand, even though it's circa 1983!A must have for anyone working with embedded OS.Search the web for full source, which is readily available.The section on drivers and interfacing is especially usefull.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for embedded goodies
Embedded processor are becoming more powerfull and popular. Even a small embedded processor can compete with the first PC's. Because of this, there is a great demand for OS's for these processors. This is were Xinu comes in (Full multitasking kernel, filesystem, semaphores, timers, device drivers...) and best of all, it is not resource hungry (<12k flash with a minimum of 4K ram).

Bottom line is that this is an excellent book to teach you the basic's of OS's. This book is worth having..

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Useful
This book focuses exclusively on XINU, the OS written mainly by Comer. I will say this book is useful in the time when there was no open source, decent OS, however with the advent of Linux, I can't see any reason to study XINU anymore. Although XINU has most of the functions a modern OS should possess, there is essentially NO application written for this OS and it is only used by a handful of universities in their OS courses(for example, Purdue University, WL). If you really want to learn OS, I would recommend you to learn Linux which has relatively superior documentations(and is far more useful and stable than XINU). Some universities also used other experimental OSs like Nachos. I know nothing much on these OSs, therefore I make no comments.

Some people might argue Linux is far too complex and intimidating for beginners to study, well this is true in view of the current Linux kernel, however the instructor should be able to remove the superfluous components in the kernel. The basic kernel is not hard to comprehend at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing but informative...I take back that statement.
For the most part this book is informative. If you have no idea of how a basic Operating System functions, or what it's responsibilities are, then this book will definitely clue you in. However, this book seemed to fall short of what the writers promised. For example, the version of XINU described in this book boots from DOS. I am suspicious of any operating system that boots from another operating system and then uses the services of it...it reminds me of Microsoft Windows 3.1. The OS also uses and relies on some of the PC's BIOS routines and services. While that technique makes the OS portable on different PCs, it limits its use only to PCs and hides a lot of operations that (in my opinion) should be shown. After reading it a few times, I found that the book was quite helpful after all. The OS has been ported to many other CPU's. The full source code can be found on the internet. The OS is quite powerful but still is simple (I was able to port the code to run on a 68010 project of mine; seeing the ported versions and the book's theory was enough to guide me). A decent book, it doesn't describe an operating system 'from the ground up', but comes close to it. Sure there are other operating systems out there with open source, but how many of those tell you what each function of the code does and what role these functions play in a OS?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to learn Operating System
Xinu is a beautiful OS and this book is a very
readable description of Xinu. Xinu with its threads
and micro kernel architecture is very suitable for
embedded applications and it has TCP/IP stack too.
Xinu is not a toy OS or even merely an
educational OS. I personally ported Xinu to an R3041
(MIPS) based board for an industrial application and
it worked very well. Hats off to Comer and others at
Purdue for giving Xinu to the world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mac OS 10.5 Leopard by Robin Williams - Peachpit Learning Series
As a semi computer illiterate grandmother trying to keep up with the technology world,this book is super.It's written and organized in an easy to understand and friendly manner, yet with enough personality to be interesting.I've been using Macs for 20 years and now have a new laptop with Leopard.Robin's book is my bible for bridging into this new operating system.I travel full time in a motorhome, and Robin's book is conveniently at my side with the answers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Leopard
This book is a good introduction to Mac OSX Leopard especially for a convert from a PC.

4-0 out of 5 stars well written, excellent,color illustrations,
Robin Williams is one woman Mac powerhouse.She's been around a long time, and knows how to write so we quickly understand and grasp her points.
Her first book I read, when I was new to Mac's was an industry favorite called The Little Mac Book. She has a knack for talking to you, not down, and when I picked up that book, I was a newbie.I also read one of her design books, for she is diversified, from graphic arts to now Shakespeare author, and we can catch her on cruises. If you get a chance, do!

This book, was a choice for me to get some basics on Mac's latest OS - Leopard, and I knew Robin would guide me, offer tips, and have illustrations, and yes, they're in color. Peachpit Press is a great company, an old guard company, that publishes just the best, and this is one.The book is designed to take the reader from being introduced to Macs, and it's Operating System, and take you from there. Since I've been into Macs for many years now, not sure how many,I went through the beginning quickly, but often because the catchy design approach, illustrations, I would stop, read, and learn something I'd not known.

The book is laid out in it's Contents at a Glance.It uses lessons, from 1 - Introduction to the Mac OS X Desktop through 24 on page 415: Secure your Mac and it's Files.So I found I could look in general for topics in this organization, or on the next page is a more detailed approach, or a true table of contents, often going page by page, with topics, and sub topics.
For example:

Mac OS X Applications is a section starting in chapter's 3 - 14, with 3 being Introduction to Mac OS X Applications, and topics under it being,
Know your Applications Folder, Applications Integration, What I've Not Covering, and Know the Common Features of the Mac Apps.So you see that it's set up to take you directly to where you want to go quickly.

The color illustrations are excellent, and Robin gives you simple language approach to what you see.She writes, designs and does the type preferences.For example when I wanted some guidance on an Video Chatting ( page 169),she goes step by step, with photos so I could know what to expect/see on my Mac.She uses red circles around what I was directed to use my cursor to hit.The screen shots were excellent. And allowed me to quickly grasp what she was teaching me.Just like if she were sitting next to me, pointing at my computer with a laser pointer.

I highly recommend the book, for beginners to immediate.I only wish she'dadded a couple of chapters for more advanced.

Having bought one copy for myself and found it useful i have now bought a second copy for use by our Mac users in our retirement village.

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit basic but well written, might be for you if you feel lost in the new OS X Leopard
I am an advanced PC user just switched to Mac and will not go back.I got this book like many of you because at the time (right after thanksgiving) it was the only REAL Leopard book out.I went thru the first 100 pages and brought it with me to my Mom's house over the holiday.She is also a new MAC user, but not as advanced in PC so it was perfect for her.Since she loved it and it seemed to answer all the questions that she had, I let her have it since I wanted to go for the Pouge bookS, both the OS X Leopard and I Movie and I DVD 08.

I am just purchasing these books now and have not got them yet, so I can't yet comment on if they are better or not.

I will say, as others have, Robin Williams has a very good writing / explaining style, and I found the book well written and easy to understand.

I would say if you just got a MAC and it is your first computer, or if you just got your FIRST Mac, making the switch from Windows and you are feeling a bit LOST, then this book might just be for you, however if you are finding it a breeze to get around on your new MAC as I am, then look for either another book on the OS or just get the books on the particular applications that interest you as they will have WAY more info then any OS book can fit into it.

Hope this helps some of you out there make up your mind which book is right for you. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book that is not a Linux/Unix book
Don't let the 1994 publish date scare you away. This book is pretty good. One of the few books that isn't filled with Linux hype/fluff. Looks pretty SunOS/Solaris based as far as screen shots. But covers 4.3BSD. The examples are clear and concise.

4-0 out of 5 stars v good for a beginner
This book is good for the "newbie" to the UNIX OS. It explains concepts very clearly starting from the simple ones and goes onto the more complicated concepts. Ive given 4 stars since it lacks the quality on theSED chapter - v. little material and v. complicated too. Need to usesimpler examples in the beginning. OTW, its an excellent beginners book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worthy the money

YES, this is the missing manual! Why in the world doesn't apple collaborate with Mr. Pogue on customer friendly references???? 3-0 out of 5 stars Broad but not deep
This is more of a field guide then a book focused on the core elements of the Macintosh operating system. For a book of only four hundred pages it covers a lot of ground, from system setup, to networking, printing, file system management, as well as the fundamentals of all of the standard applications and the iPhoto suite. As you can see, that is a lot to cover in 400 pages, so the coverage is necessarily shallow.

That being said the text is easy to read and the illustrations are well used. The content is up-to-date and their and helpful tips and tricks.

If you want an overall look at Mac OS X then you should have a look at this book. I would recommend figuring out if you are interested in the operating system itself, where I would recommend Mac OS X In a Nutshell, or interested in the iLife application suite, where I would recommend the O'Reilly Missing Manual book that corresponds to the application you are interested in.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best!!!
This book took me from the initial install of Mac OS X 10.3 to getting to know my Mac in and out (in 1 day), setting up the mail feature was a snap. It gives good step by step instruction for every feature of the Mac OS X 10.3, as well as how to maneuver in "Classic". I don't even refer to the other books that I have purchased for the OS X 10.3 Panther.

3-0 out of 5 stars Panther books in competition, Missing Manual wins
Gene Steinberg has written many books about the OS X operating system for Macintosh computers, including Mac OS X (2000), Upgrading and Troubleshooting Your Mac: Mac OS X Edition (2001), Mac OS X Version 10.2 Jaquar Little Black Book (2002), Moving to the OS X Painlessly (2003), and now a new edition of his Mac OS X 10.3 Panther Little Black Book (Paraglyph Press, 2004). He knows the operating system.

The Panther Little Black Book recognizes the attractions of OS 10.3 -- more stability and more features.The book focuses on the new features, but not the iLife features. The 22 chapters cover what's hot, upgrading to Panther, user preferences, the Finder, desktop management, setup for multiple users, search feature, networking, AppleScript, installing programs, setting up hardware and peripherals, laptop tools, OS X applications, using older programs with Panther, font management, backups, security, troubleshooting, the Unix environment, surfing the net, email software, and hub applications. As the back cover states, this book is a guide for using, troubleshooting, and customizing the Panther operating system.It is a how-to book, albeit a technical manual.

The book opens with the chapter on what's hot that discusses Darwin, Quartz, Cocoa, Carbon, Aqua - information for programmers, and continues with comments about Classic, Finder, and Dock - information for general users.Despite the opening, a programmer would be disappointed with the book as it is basic how-to manual that covers, for example, the page close, minimize, and maximize buttons on the top left of windows and other such basic steps for using the OS 10.3 system.For users upgrading from OS 9, Steinberg provides a useful chart listing where to find features that have moved or disappeared with OS X (page 41). Comparisons in the text to OS versions older than OS 9 do not help solve a current problem; such information could similarly be compiled in a chart.

Among the book's weaknesses are the illustrations showing the computer screen, which are printed in black and white and in relatively small size so the text is difficult to read.The writing in the book is occasionally awkward; for example (page 12): "The famous Apple desktop isn't left untouched by the Mac OS X.Although on the surface it looks very different, looks can be deceiving."And some of the advice is trivial:"When you're finished working on your PowerBook, simply close the cover and pop it into a drawer.This is a great way to keep a neat desk" (page 371).When looking up screen options, I found myself flipping from section to section in the book in search of information that would enable me to make an informed choice, but usually to no avail.

The Panther Little Black Book is advertised as the "concise problem solver."At 548 pages, it is "concise" when compared to the competition provided by David Pogue's Mac OS X The Missing Manual, Panther Edition (Pogue Press, 2003), which now in its third edition has 728 pages.Comparison is natural in the highly competitive market for user's guides.This reviewer's library has both The Missing Manual and Little Black Book (as well as Jim Heid's Macintosh iLife, an Interactive Guide to iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, and iDVD, Peachpit Press, 2003). If I had to keep -- or to buy -- one book, it would be The Missing Manual, as it is more comprehensive, more readable, better organized, easier to use, and more applicable to my needs than the Little Black Book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reasons to Upgrade
The purists amongst you may wince at the title. The "X" refers to "10", so the title has redundancy. Oh well...

Steinberg has produced a straightforward, understandable book on the latest Mac operating system, Panther. He starts out by putting this in the context of its predecessors - the Classic version 9 and the earlier versions 10. This is useful to those of you still using these versions and pondering why you should upgrade. He tries to induce you to do so with an introductory chapter highlighting the best of Panther.

While Panther may be software, it is actually optimal for only the latest hardware. So Steinberg also devotes space to explaining why. Obviously, Apple would prefer that you get Panther on a new Mac from them, rather than try to install Panther on your existing hardware. But Moore's Law still holds and if you are upgrading, you should seriously consider going whole hog and get a new Mac.

Panther now supports a variety of browsers, instead of just Microsoft's Internet Explorer, which was true of some earlier Mac operating systems. Given the importance of a browser to many users, there is a chapter on the choices now available. These include Netscape, Mozilla, Opera ... Which will surely be well received by some. ...
