Several of the Hellenistic Kingdoms, mainly in Anatolia (Armenia, Pontus, Cappadocia, etc.), are domains of non-Greek peoples. Meanwhile, although the literature does not seem as brilliant, mathematics, science, and technology develop rapidly. Archimedes very nearly develops calculus. Eratosthenes estimates the size of the Earth with an accuracy that will not be surpassed until Modern times. Hero of Alexandria builds a kind of steam engine. This remains little more than a toy, but the same cannot be said of the immense engines, often of war, that Hellenstic technology otherwise produces. It is all inherited by the Romans, perhaps symbolicly with the killing of Archimedes at Syracuse by a Roman soldier in 212 (during the Second Punic War, 218-201). The texts of the Thessaloniki brothers Cyril and Methodius, written in the new alphabet, mark the beginning of Macedonian literature since the language they were written in was the language spoken by the Macedonian Slavs of Thessaloniki. For that reason, the beginning of literary activity among the Slavic peoples is closely linked to the beginning of Macedonian literature. The oldest Slavonic texts proving the literacy of medieval Macedonia are the Assemani Gospel, the Zograf Gospel, the Codex Marianus, the Sinai Psalter and the Sinai Euchologion, all dating from the 12th century. It has been ascertained that they were either written on Macedonian soil or contain characteristic traces of medieval Macedonian originals. All were written in Glagolitic script, proof of the continued use of this alphabet in Macedonia. Constantine the Presbyter, known in literature and in church history also as Episcope Constantine of Bregalnitsa, was one of the younger disciples of Cyril and Methodius. Constantine was the author of the collected Teaching Gospels, 51 sermons including 42 original works. He is also most likely the author of the Introduction to the Gospel, which celebrates the fact that the Slavs had obtained the Gospel in their own language. The Alphabet Prayer, an introductory text to the Teaching Gospels, likewise delights in the education of the Slavs. But the dilemma over whether these works belong to Constantine/St. Cyril or to Constantine of Bregalnitsa remains to be solved by scholars.

In the next year he was murdered, and his brilliant son Alexander has been suspected of complicity in the plot. The grand idea of Philip's, begotten perhaps from the study of Isocrates, was certainly inspired by the examples of Cyrus and Agesilaus. Unfortunately it was far from arousing any enthusiasm in Greece. Persia itself was a long way off and money could be had from the great king without fighting for it. There was a sordid scramble for bribes among the Greek statesmen. As soon as they heard of Philips death they broke into unseemly jubilation, and voted compliments to his murderers; they hoped that things would return to their own routine, and that there would be no talk of crusades. They has reckoned without Alexander, for it is seldom that a Philip is succeeded by an Alexander.

The Museum collects, studies and exhibits the natural treasure of Macedonia. LITERACY AND CULTURE THE ANCIENT PERIOD Macedonia existed as an independent state as early as the ancient period. It was a slave-owning society located on the territory known by the same name, but previously called Ematia. Ancient Macedonia had bordered with Greece in the south, Epirus in the west, Illyria in the northwest and Thrace in the east. The population of this state had consisted of various tribes like the Orestians, the Elimiotians, the Erodians and others. They were all been close to the Illyrians, the Thracians and the Greeks. In the 6th century B. C. Macedonia did not have close contacts with the Greek state and culture. As a society it was organized on a primitive basis, but at the end of the 5th century B. C. it entered a phase of its development known as "military democracy". When the processes of development entered its social structure, Macedonia became a class society that started uniting its territory divided into separate regions on the basis of political unification. Alexander I (489-454 B. C.) was the first to unite Macedonia. Archelaus (431-399 B. C.) had the task of consolidating the process of centralization by introducing monetary and military reforms while, during the reign of Philip II (359-336 B. C.), the borders of Macedonia were significantly expanded. He reorganized the military and annihilated the separatist tendencies. He defeated the Greeks at the battle of Chaeronea (338 B. C.), thus delivering a decisive blow to the anti-Macedonian coalition and raising Macedonia among the most powerful states in the Balkans.
