5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for all ESL/EFL Teachers
Making the transition from teaching conversational English abroad to teaching Academic English in the states was a bit tough. Many people don't realize that English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is a completely different field.

This books serves as both a great introduction to the field and a good reference book for your school's teaching library.

It has several activities planned out already to help you get your feet wet. However, if you're looking for a book based solely on lesson plan ideas, this may not be the one for you.

English for Academic Purposes is designed to introduce the components of an EAP course, for example:

Lectures and Note-taking skills, group work customs/dynamics, presentation skills, reference/research skills, as well as examination skills. There is also a discussion devoted to the differences of informal and formal English.

This book is also a valuable resource for teacher development. There are sections on course/syllabus design, as well as a wealth of recommended books and journals for further study. If I were going to give a workshop on teaching EAP, this is the book I would use. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Teaching English Language Learners k-12: A Quick start Guide for the New Teacherr
I took a coarse through Ottawa University.English Language Learners thistext book was the teacherrs book of choice.During this class we read every chapter, reviewed it in the class and did presentations about each chapter to further our understanding of the text. The concepts presented in the book
were concepts and processes and methods that I have been using in my classroom for years.I did not learn any new processes or ideas as to how topresentideas to my classes.Thistext did reinforcethat the methodsand materials that I teach are veryappropriate. The teacher had stated that the ideas in this text were tested and proven to be very effective in the classroom with English Language learners. And that thesame methods were excellent for teaching any type of student in themultilearner classroom that all teachers are faced with today.

5-0 out of 5 stars It sure seves its purpose.
As this book claims to be, it will give a guick-start for the new teacher in teaching ESL. It generally touches all the issues that an ESL teacher could think of. It offers quite helpful tips for the teacher of adult learners of English as well as younger learners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent quick start for teachers in an ESL role
This book was an excellent cut-to-the-chase guide for a teacher shoved into an ESL role who needs to get up to speed quickly. His approach to teaching recognizes the pressures, hurdles and difficulties that many teachers face when placed in this role.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful & Thought-Provoking
I thought both his philosophy of teaching and his technique to be useful and thought-provoking.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is awful!
I was assigned to read this book for an education course this summer. The title would suggest that this book would be very useful for new and inexperienced teachers.I was extremely disappointed.Jesness rarely, if ever, explains the research behind his opinions in this book.[...].He makes huge generalizations and gives an erroneous lesson plan trying to use the SIOP model. The worst moment in the book is where he says that ESL teachers would be justified to just teach English to English Language Learners and not teach the content areas, despite the fact that all ELLs are required to take content area exams under NCLB.There is so much rich literature to help teachers instruct ELLs, but this book is neither rich nor useful.I would highly recommend NOT reading this book. ... Book Description
The standard text for clinical methods courses is now updated and expanded to serve as the comprehensive single resource for specific therapy techniques for a wide variety of communication disorders, covering children and adults.Organized in two main sections, the manual covers the basic principles of speech-language intervention and information reporting systems as well as therapy strategies. Finally, a chapter on practical suggestions for effective parent and family counseling helps pull it all together in an especially useful manner. As more and more speech-language pathologists work privately and more independently, this manual serves as an aide to help supplement their knowledge when immediate consultation with colleagues is not available.

4-0 out of 5 stars Treatment Resource Manual
I have founds both the Assessment and Treatment Manual equally helpful for new and experienced SLP's.As for the review titled "Speech therapy does not work," it is clear that we have a irrational person that cannot see beyond his/her personal experience to see how invaluable SLP's are.We are trained to service many different ages and disorders.Effectiveness of a whole profession should never be evaluated out of anger from an individual experience. However, it is evident that certain support groups are trying to program families into this belief, which is very unfortunate and unproductive(especially for the person their trying to advocate for)!Speech LanguagePathologist are helping their clients daily in the rehabilitation and remediation of skills to help them regain or acquire skills that enable them to function in society. Along with cognitive rehabilitation and speech and language intervention, we also provide dsyphagia therapy (feeding therapy) which certainly helps a client to begin/regain the ability to tolerate certain types of food/textures. This is done to ultimately avoid aspiration pnuemonia, which could be fatal if not treated. This technique strenghthens muscles that assist in eating and articulating. As you can see, our profession is extrememly important.Unfortunately we are not "miracle workers" and can only rehab and treat to the client's ability.A team of advocates, lawyers, or irate family members cannot change this in a person. It is what it is.Maybe the anger should be redirected positively to the person who really needs it, and acceptance should begin. Just then, maybe "real" progress may be observed. SLP's are not rewarded by high salaries, but work and worry about our clients endlessly. Our therapuetic techniques evolve as research does. Keeping an open mind helps people to improve professionally, as well as personally.

5-0 out of 5 stars good resource
This is an excellent resource with descriptions, ideas, examples, helpful hints and age appropirate goals. Not only do you get sample activies but they are very detailed too. They also list additional resources.OH! and example profiles... you can see if one of your students has similar attributes. They have therapy for children, adolescents and adults... what more can you ask for. I used this book to learn and use "pace" therapy, what a great help! =) ... Read more
