5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite Science resource by far
I've used and owned many other science resource books over the years (as a former home daycare owner, and now homeschooling mom) but this has been my favorite out of all of them.

Sorted by category (which not all resource books are!) this book is easy to use, has ample instruciton for the teacher and more than plenty activities/experiments to choose from.

Whether you pick and choose from throughout the book in a hodge-podge sort of way, or you use the book straight through with "science themes" this book will provide you more ideas than you can use. One of the very few science books for this age group that I've seen that provides reproducibles for many of the acitivities.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great way to implement science in my classroom.
I first saw this book in the resource center, where I attend college.I am a senior at Emporia State University in Kansas.I am majoring in Elementary Education.Presently, I am student teaching in a first grade classroom. When I saw this book, I new just by looking at the cover it would be wonderful. It is full of so many science activities. My favorite is the unit on apples. It describes great activities to do with your student from the seeds of the apple to the color of the apple. This book is full of hands on activities for young children, which is the basis of thier education. This book is definitely going into my classroom library.I will use it for my science lessons.I love this book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Pay Attention to What Grades This Book Is For!
O.K. I'll begin by confessing that I am a middle school teacher whoparticipated in one of the NSF funded summer Institutes for ChemicalEducation. So, I already had the pleasure of working with and learningfrom two of the authors, Jerry and Mickey Sarquis.I would not haveexpected anything less than a 5-star professional resource from them.Thisbook is a gem.It offers 42 activities, evenly distributed among K-3, 4-6,and 7-9.However, those categories meant little to my students or me.Weloved them all.Of course, I might have changed an activity title like"Twirly Whirly Milk" to something that was more "8thgradish" and added a question or two to the accompanying handout, butwhat is important is that my students enjoyed the activities and thoughtabout science as a result of doing them.

The activities all include thefollowing well developed sections: key science topics, key process skills, time required, materials - for getting ready - for introducing the activity- for the procedure - for variations and extensions, safety and disposal, getting ready, introducing the activity, procedure, variations andextensions, explanation, assessment options, cross-curricular integration, and some of the activities also have hand-out masters.(I almost rated thebook only 4 stars because I would have liked handouts for each activity, but the assessment sectionss offer the teacher many creative options. So,you'll have to think a little. What else is new?)

Children are explorers.Early child care providers, educators and parents are all aware of the strong, inherent desire children have to learn how their world works. Many current science curriculum, however, focus on the memorization of facts or the teacher-directed experiments rather than a more hands on technique for children.Parents and teachers are finding a need for new and different ways to stimulate scientific learning in the minds of young children.

Created to give parents, child care providers and teachers some alternative methods of offering science to children, More Than Magnets: is filled with more than a hundred activities that make science an interactive experience for children. Each chapter begins by answering the questions commonly asked by teachers and then offering a variety of activities for children to explore. Each of the activities is accompanied by a photograph and detailed explanation of how to set up the activity or construct materials. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice, not necessary
This is a wonderful, lovely book with some very nice ideas in the Waldorf-tradition style. It is not, however, necessary to own it, especially as there are some books that are still in print that contain much of the same ideas. The Children's Year, by Stephanie Cooper et al, is one such book. But this book does have very lovely ideas and descriptions to go along with much of the content, she discusses many of the activities and crafts (and the "why" of those) more than any other book I've seen. So I'm glad I have it, but if you're on a budget or looking for something with more ideas, then I suggest looking at something else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
I have many books.Lots of them sit on the shelf and come out as needed. This is one that does not even go back on to the shelf. It sits at my computer with a couple of "must haves" and I refer to it several times a week. You will not be disappointed with this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book: Seems like a compilation of lots of timeless ideas
I love that this book teaches how to do things yourself, from drying apples and churning butter to making your own simple toy ribbon wands and leaf crowns. Rather than having to rely on a store for something new, this book encourages teachers to instruct children on how to do it themselves. Many of the activities use natural materials that could be acquired during a short nature walk.

NB: Check this out at the library, but do not pay the exorbitant price ($100) for a used copy, especially since the author has a similar, reasonably price book in print called Earthwise.Earthwise: Environmental Crafts and Activities with Young Children

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to add to your home library!
I have had this book for years and love it. The book is divided into four sections, one for each season. Each activity is marked for a particular age and above, such as 3+ or 4+.

I just opened the book to gather more summer activity ideas. We have made the butterfly crowns in years past and my girls had so much fun with this one. I learned how to make dandelion chains here which we do every year now. My girls made the bark boats about a month ago and had a lot of fun with it. Next on our list is, Parachute People!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Activities
I checked out this book from my library and we had such a wonderful time with it that we promptly bought it.

Particularly fun things, such as making your own butter, really capture the attention of the young and older alike.

Fun resource for anyone with young children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great to plan a preschool science curriculum!
I teach preK, and I have used this book at two schools to plan science activities for my class. Each chapter has 2-8 activities for that topic. It includes a supply list, general guidelines on setting up the learning center, and some anecdotes from children using the center in the author's experience. Some of the topics include water, air, simple machines, kitchen science, and outdoor science. While a few activities in the book suggest some hard-to-find materials, that is not the norm. Most of the activities do use household items. And if you are a teacher, send home a note to parents to help find the rest!I highly recommend this book to preschool teachers and parents alike.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ridiculous
I stopped at the library to look at this book before I purchased it.I'm glad I did.I randomly glanced at the experiments.Almost all of them required hard to find materials, some things I never heard off. For example one experiment wanted you to have an old turn table.Another one parts from a taken apart VCR.There is an experiment that requires cut copper pipes.A few needed PVC (PCV?) pipe holders. This is supposed to be for preschoolers. If you have a garage full of old parts great, but if you are looking for a book that you can have fun with your child using things from around the house this is not for you. You'll spend more time looking for materials in thrift stores and hardware stores then doing the actual experiments.

5-0 out of 5 stars A surprise of a book!
I checked this book out from the library and now I want my own copy! The experiments are very unstructured and feel like playtime to my little engineer. Easy to set up and I don't have to deliver a lecture about what it is we're studying; he simply gets to play and I get to watch him (it's fun and amazing). ... Read more
