2-0 out of 5 stars kicking as exercise not kicking as game
I read this book from perspective of kick boxing. I thought I will learn something from this book. My disappointment. This was an exercise book, not a kicking book.

If you want to learn good stance, kicking styles, power kicking then this is not a book but if you are looking for another exercise book then this is ok. Too many words and very few pictures.

There are many other full body exercises for fitness. Just kicking for fitness? :-) Developing what part of body?

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
The sales ranking simply doesn't do this book justice. I picked up this book in the library, attracted by the headlines "the fastest way to lose weight and get in shape". Although the workout seemed pretty easy I started to sweat after 10 minutes into it. Both the upper and lower bodies received intense workout and in 3 weeks I already felt that my thighs and abs were stronger. I gained muscle and could execute my kicks more accurately and jabs more powerful. Also has great instructions on how to motivate yourself, how to have a positive attitude towards exercise, introduction to traditional martial arts and tips to healthy living. Would recommend to those who are looking for 'something to do' and as a cross-training for atheletes who are looking for something outside their specialization. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Strictly a Fitness Book
Don't try to defend yourself using this book. You will get creamed. This book is strictly for fitness kickboxing which is okay.Don't use this book to create your own style unless it is a fitness kickboxing style. I don't think that many of these exercises translate well to a competition class. These exercises are best left in the aerobics room for the most part.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Useful Source of Information
I am a kickboxing instructor, teaching a class on heavy bags and working on developing a style of my own.I have found O'Donnell's book to be an invaluable source of information to me.His clear, concise descriptions of stances and punching and kicking techniques cover all the basics.I'm always looking for creative kickboxing combinations, and he has a number of them in the book.In addition, his section in the back on Resistance Training Exercises has helped me tremendously in creating new ways to challenge the people I'm instructing. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in teaching a challenging kickboxing class - either cardio or contact style.

Product Description
Each year, thousands of people begin kickboxing, and - not so surprisingly - the vast majority of these people are women. It's a great time for this sport, reflected in the number of women of all ages who show up for training classes at gyms throughout the country. With virtually every popular woman's character in movies in television shows exhibiting some sort of kickboxing or martial arts prowess, the trend will probably continue for some time.In addition, thousands more women join related classes, such as aerobox, cardio-kickboxing, Tae Bo and the like.

Once these women start learning some of the techniques of kickboxing, they often want to learn more. Whether they attempt to learn on their own or through classes offered by experienced instructors, most kickboxers eventually feel the need to have a skills book to help them with their practice. Most women, however, must purchase books intended for men, since little traditional kickboxing information is directed toward a female audience. While women can, of course, benefit from material written for men, they find it more useful to have information written with them in mind. Some of the challenges that women face are not faced by men, and many of the inherent skills that many women have (speed, agility, flexibility) are often overlooked in traditional reference books.

Kickboxing for Women covers all the essentials of learning kickboxing, plus tips especially for women. It contains information helpful to beginning, intermediate and advanced kickboxers. The book also includes principles, techniques and drills for fitness kickboxer as well as the professional. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A superbly presented primer to help beginners
Kickboxing For Women by Jennifer Lawler (2nd Degree Black Belt, Tae Kwon Do) and Debz Buller (Certified Cardio-Karate, ACE Aerobics Instructor and ISSA Certified Personal Trainer) is a high-spirited, practical guide to stretching, exercise, fitness, and self-defense, written in direct, plain text and illustrated with plenty of demonstrative black-and-white photographs. While not a substitute for kickboxing classes taught by a professional, Kickboxing For Women is a superbly presented primer to help beginners with an interest better understand the basics of training and sparring. With workout plans written to take a woman's body and endurance into account, Kickboxing For Women is a winning supplement to any female kickboxer's physical fitness regimen!

5-0 out of 5 stars From a woman's perspective
As a female full-contact kickboxing instructor, I found this book to be a valuable buy for any woman who is thinking about getting started in kickboxing.I liked how the authors identify the different styles of kickboxing, and how they explain the difference between aerobic kickboxing and full-contact kickboxing. This information is useful in helping a prospective student identify what her goals are before signing up for classes.I found most of the advice on the execution of techniques sound. As a full-contact kickboxing instructor, I differ on some points. However, these are minor differences, which are mostly style related, and which is something a new student looking to get started in kickboxing should not get hung up on.The book's strength, however, lies in the chapters following the explanations of the techniques. For example, I found the chapter on full-contact sparring with its many tips on goal setting and mental preparation, and the "For Women Only" and "Debz Says" suggestions at the end of each chapter, very helpful to a new student. And the exercise section does a good job describing why and how, rather than what.In other words, it's not just an endless list of exercises, which is so often found in other books of this nature. The section on "Other Practical Matters" was very informative for women, and something that most other books on the combat arts neglect to mention.I would recommend this book to any woman who is thinking about getting started in this male-dominated sport. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars good book
knew most of the things in this book, thought it would be different.good for a begginer or someone who wants to jsut read up on info regarding stretches and exercises for the martial artist

4-0 out of 5 stars Basic, Basic, Basic!
Allow me to start off by stating emphatically that this is not a bad book at all, it's just simply a very well done book on nothing more than basics, basics, basics! If you are new to the martial arts and training, then this would be a great book for you to own, but if you have any experience at all, then you will probably find this book of little use to you.

The layout and format are very well done and the photographs are in color and printed on glossy paper, always a plus. The author covers such fitness areas as; stretching, dieting, weight training, aerobics, etc. However, these areas are not really gone over with any great detail and as I said before, are pretty basic in nature. This book would be of a greater benefit to someone who was involved in kickboxing, more so that any other martial art, and that is exactly what the title implies.

Here are some additional books on training that you may want to check out as well.

Practical Programming for Strength Training

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great
Although this book has quite a bit of useful information. It lacks organization and cohesiveness. Mr. Seabourne jumps around a lot, and in the end there is no natural flow to the information he provides. I think thisbook would have been more effective, if the chapters were as follows:introduction, punches, kicks, combination, stretching (pre- andpost-workout), shadow boxing and/or heavy bag work, conditioning drills, and workout plans. Most of this information was covered, but it wasscattered, confusing, and sometimes, incomplete. Furthermore, his suggestedworkouts are weak. My overall impression of this book is that it is rather"girlie." If you are looking for a really good book on thesubject, check out "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Kickboxing."

The Secret ofChinese Chi-Kung & Longevity

For the first time, the mysterious Chinese Chi Kung is explained
in a scientific way, easy to understand and easy to practice.

Once and for all, everything you wanted to know about "CHI", Revealed!

Introduction To Chi-Kung
1. The brief history of Chi Kung in China.
2. What is Chi Kung?
3. What are the advantages of practicing Chi Kung?
4. What kind of people can practice Chi Kung while what kind of People can not?
5. How to use this e-book to learn Chi Kung?

6. Why Chi Kung can heal chronic diseases?

Reasons to heal chronic disease:

1.Beneficial control to give the brain a chance to re-regulate or recuperate those functions which are

deviated a little:
In Hong Kong, when the new air port had been built, they moved from Kai Tak Airport (the old airport) to the

new international airport immediately to start work in order to celebrate the reunion of Hong Kong to China in

1997, may be it was too hurry, everything was in a mess after the ceremony, so the Hong Kong Government decided

to stop receiving orders from outside, that is to say, no passenger transportation, no cargo transportation so

to give a small group of computer experts a chance ( a certain period of time without disturbance from outside,

at this time, the air port was under a special situation, no body worked except a small group of experts ) to

re-regulate the computer system, put everything back to the normal track. Then, they started receiving order

from outside again as normal.

In practicing Chi Kung, the same reason, we put the body into a special situation, in this situation, no

disturbance from the outside.

2.Internal massage ---- breathing with the diaphragm:
In Chi Kung practice, we breathe with the diaphragm, the diaphragm moves up and down and thus cause internal

massaging the organs inside and thus produce secretions which improve digestion and other metabolisms.

3.Resume those secretions which seem to be dry and thus get back a part of our youth:
When the chi passes through some glands which seem to stop working when we become mature, the Chi stimulates

those glands which will resume working to some degree. The declining secretions become active again. That is

why the people who practice Chi Kung constantly look younger than those who don’t usually.

4.Raise the ability of our self-healing systems:
We all know that muscle can be trained to become stronger. Can our self-healing system (more than immune

system, not only against germs) be trained? The answer is “yes”, Chi Kung is the exercise to do that.

In the modern way to save ourselves from being sick, there are three kinds of therapies, namely:

A.Precautionary therapy
This is to reduce the factors that may cause the sickness to happen. Something can be done

beforehand to reduce the chance to get that disease. For example: hi-blood pressure, if youpay

attention to your diet and do some exercises regularly as a habit, you may not get hi- blood pressure.

B.Healing therapy
When you have got the disease already, you go to consult the doctor; the doctor does something about it to get

you out of trouble. This is a healing therapy; something happens during the disease, it may be too late if you

don’t let the doctor know on time.

C.Recuperative therapy
In a car accident, you get injured and are sent to the hospital to get cured up. After that, you feel too weak;

some of the functions of your body have lost. The doctor wants you to do something to resume those functions.

This is Recuperative therapy. Something happens after the trouble.

Chi Kung can be regarded as one of the precautionary therapies because

Chi Kung trains:

1.Nerve system

2.Secretion system

3.Micro-circulation system

4.Self-healing system ... Read more

Aerobics, a kind of exercise which helps your body use more oxygen while maintaining your target heart range, can definitely help a person live longer and healthier. 1-0 out of 5 stars Repetitious Advice
I purchased the book for the interviews of muggers, attackers etc. There is not a core chapter dedicated to these interview as quotes are spread out through the text. The quotes do not provide insights as to their patterns or thinking, only how violent they are. There are some kernels of insight in the text, but the repetition of advice makes a straight read through near impossible. I would only purchase this book if you are looking to purchase at half price.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best guide available
As a not very good amateur martial artist I have purchased many books to try and assist and inspire me in my training. By some margin this is by far the best. Sure there are better books that give more detail on specific topics, however no others deal with as many areas as this one. Thompson is ex-doorman/nightclub bouncer and martial artist in many disciplines. A 1st dan in judo, 6th dan in Karate together with qualifications in wrestling and many others.

In this book he covers 24 areas of 'self-protection' from 1. avoidance and awareness to 24. Self-Defence and the law. There isn't sufficient time to review all the these areas in a short review like this. However what I will say is that this book has given me some new insights into just how to criminal mind works, as well as some useful information on practical martial arts. See for example chapter 12 which is devoted solely to the application, advantages and disadvantages of chokes and strangles.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the book is where he interviews several victims of violent crime as well as several muggers and looks at several case histories from serial killers. Some of the case histories are hard to read (as their crimes are described in graphic detail by the criminal), however the interviews with the muggers are a fascinating insight into how the criminal mind works and a lot of useful information can be gained from reading these.

Some will say that studying martial arts and reading this sort of material is a complete waste of time. However for those of us that do, it is enlightening to know that people who are switched off to their surroundings and their environment are the ones most likely to fall victim to a mugger or criminal.

This book does duplicate some material from Geoff Thompsons other books. So if you only want to buy one book that covers the entire spectrum of his philosophy - this is the one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mindset and physioloy of fighting
I bought this book because many readers said that this is one of the "originals."Geoff is a former bouncer who has many insightful thoughts on fighting. The most important concepts in the book are on how to avoid fights.Secondly, the physiology of the "adrenal dump" is discussed at length. This was my favorite part, as I have a backround in medicine. The text is easy to read and understand. The fighting section is less useful, as martial arts are very difficult to learn from a book.Overall, I would highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars It does just what it says on the lable and more!!
A great companion to the book by Peter Consterdine's "STREETWISE - A Manual for Self Defence". Like Streetwise it's a hefty tomb and packed with useful, effective and easy to learn self techniques THAT WORK!! Plenty of clear pictures too.

Geoff is one of the greats when it comes to Self Defence & personal protection, but what is SO GOOD in this book is that Geoff teaches you how to avoid situations that are likely to lead to a scrap, e.g. sections dealing with Awareness, profiles of Attackers & what they're looking for in a target therefore how to avoid being a target. How to deal with Fear & how to use it to your advantage.

A lot of the book is devoted to actual self defence techniques, striking, parts of the body & ground fighting too. Also, first aid & points on The Law & how it can protect you are also covered.

Geoff has had many years of experience learning & honing his skills on the streets and as a Doorman so is justly qualified to give out this kind of expert information. He is truly devoted to his methods and teaching and his passion for his skills comes out very well in this book.

IT's a REAL LIFE-SAVER!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Man Knows What He's Talking About
Geoff Thompson makes his mark not mainly in the presentation of practical techniques for self defense. Though he does that well (from his own educated point of view), I think that is not the most important point of this book. This book is intended to prepare the average person to deal with what by definition is a dangerous, uncomfortable meeting with people that one generally doesn't want to get to know. Though his book may scare off some readers in its graphic discussion of those who prey on normal people, getting right in one's mind about how things really are is an important step in doing something about one's personal safety in the street. Mental preparation is a major issue in personal defense, and is often overlooked by otherwise excellent authors. Thompson doesn't miss this key area. If you're serious about self defense, Thompsons work must be on your list! ... Read more

1. The brief history of Chi Kung in China:

The history of Chi Kung can be traced back to about five thousand years ago in China. Since there were emperors

ruling over the country claiming to be the “Son of the Sky” (天子, a traditional concept that was used to fool the

common people, “Sky” in ancient time in China sometimes is equivalent to “God”, the emperors wanted the people

to believe that they were authorized by “God” to rule over, so listen and obey at all time, no question asked)

who loved the power, glory, position and privilege so much that they wanted immortality.

People of knowledge tried very hard to satisfy their emperor. Roughly speaking, there were two groups of people

studying this, the first group tended to use medicine, it ended up that eleven emperors in Chinese history have

been poisoned to death by this so called ”Immortality Medicine”.

The second group found that the best medicine had been existing in our bodies already, which were born with. Our

job is to cultivate it, make it stronger and accumulate it to a certain part of the body and make use of it.

People practice this tends to live longer according to statistics but not yet be immortal. This kind of

exercises is called “Chi Kung” to-day.

2. What is Chi Kung?

In China, it is called “Chi”, in Japan it is called “Ki”, have you ever heard of Aikido? In India, it is called

“Purana”, ask the Yoka people,In Philippine, it is called “Mana”, in Europe, it is called “Aura”. There are

about 30 names for about the same thing. You see, in human history, not only Chinese struggled to find out the

secret of “Chi”. Around the world in the past, people sensed that there was something you couldn’t see, didn’t

know what color, how heavy, what smell, closely related to our bodies and lives did exist.

In this book, I try to explain everything from the point of view of a scientist, so you can understand and

handle it easily. I’m not going to use those abstract, fancy, classic, difficult Chinese terminologies.

Therefore I choose a term which is more substantial in the Western World to describe it. You can temporarily put

it equal to “bio-electricity” for the time being (actually it is more than that).

Our bodies are conductors, electricity can pass through. You know some eel can produce electricity, so do our

bodies. But why we don’t feel it, the reason is that the electricity we produce is too weak to be detected. But,

in some special situation, the famous Chinese scientist, the father of missile of China -------- Dr. Chin Hoc

Sum called it “The Chi Kung Situation”, we can feel it. This e-book teaches us how to practice to set up this

Chi Kung Situation so that we can feel this bio-electricity and accumulate it to become stronger and stronger,

finally it circulate along the meridians driven by or led by our “Intent 意 “.

Kung (功) in Chinese means “exercise” or “function” or “work’ sometimes. This means that we have to work for it.

We reap what we sow. ... Read more

4. What kind of people can practice Chi Kung while what kind of People can not?

5. How to use this e-book to learn Chi Kung?
6. Why Chi Kung can heal chronic diseases?

3. What are the advantages of practicing Chi Kung?

1. “Chi Kung’ can improve health, both mentally and physically, no doubt about it according to Chinese

history and now countless living examples in China, go to the hospitals, you will see the nurse leads the

patients to practice Chi Kung, some of them are cancer patients who were told by their Western doctors that

they would die in a few months but get recovered completely like miracles.

2. It is probably the most economical way. You don’t need a lot of equipments, a specific playground or

field like soccer or basket ball, you don’t need even a ball. Any place enough to sit or stand with good

ventilation and quiet is good enough, you may have to pay some tuition to learn from a Sifu (teacher or

master), but after that, you can go home and practice alone, never pay the Sifu anymore.

3. You can practice within your own schedule, even though there are some recommended times to practice more

effectively but no obligation. You don’t need a partner, anytime you like, just do it!

4. There is no restriction of sex, age, any normal person, weak or strong, even sick, lying on bed , can

practice ( they can practice the sleeping Chi Kung ).

5. There is no contradiction between “Chi Kung” and modern therapy.

When you take pills, under the prescription from your family doctor, that is “chemical reaction” trying to

help.

When you practice “Chi Kung”, that is an exercise to strengthen your “self-healing system” (including immune

system and some other things) trying to help. There is no chemical reaction, therefore no interaction. Just on

the contrary, “Chi Kung” helps you to recover quicker.

“Chi Kung” can heal those hidden troubles, brewing inside your
body, about to make you sick, you go to the doctor, the doctor
checks and then says “it is your psychological effect! Nosickness.”
But you feel uncomfortable inside somewhere, hard to tell, this is
What Chinese physicians call “Inharmoniousness between Yin &
Yang, not flowing fluently with Chi.” Come and learn Chi Kung,
You will understand. Remember Chinese therapy has been there
for more than five thousand years already.

4. What kind of people can practice Chi Kung and what kind of People can not?

Any normal people can practice Chi Kung regardless of their ages, sexes, weak or strong, except those who are

mentally sick, or they have close relatives such as brother or sister who has been sent to mental house because

they might have dormant DNA which can be reactivated or revived by Chi Kung to cause the specific mental

trouble.

5. How to use this e-book to learn Chi Kung?

This e-book was actually my notes when I taught Chi Kung several years ago in Canada. Each

lesson is for one week’s work, you need normally three months to establish what you want.

Study lesson one and follow the instruction to practice everyday in the first week, then study lesson two, at

the eighth day, do what you should do in lesson two first ------ i.e. warm up, then come back to do meditations

in lesson one, then finish with “On Chiang Ping Chi”. You can see, those exercise are being done

accumulatively, notice the order, don’t miss any one unless you are told to do so. ... Read more
