Extractions: The "Building a Balanced Literacy Program" grants will support the purchase of books; provide resources for schools to create classroom settings that support reading; provide funds to help teachers purchase training and professional development materials on literacy; and fund school programs that strengthen parent and community involvement in building students' literacy. The Kauffman Foundation is committing $500,000 to the program for the 1999-2000 school year. Along with the individual school grants, participating schools will receive specialized professional development for their teachers and other staff, consultation on developing quality classroom libraries, and evaluation so the results of the programs can be measured.
