Product Description

Created as a mechanism for maintaining British influence through a local patron, Jordan’s future never looked certain. Nevertheless, under the leadership of the Hashemite monarchy led by Abdullah and then his grandson Hussein, the Kingdom of Jordan became a permanent feature on the map of the modern Middle East.

Under the rule of King Abdullah II, Jordan has remained an influential regional player in the Middle East Peace Process, its strategic position on the borders of Palestine, Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Iraq ensuring that it cannot be overlooked in the regional and international politics.

Updated and expanded to include recent developments in Jordan and the Middle East, the new edition includes coverage and discussion of:

  • the reign of King Abdullah II
  • the involvement of the US in the Iraq war and the effect on this on Jordan’s alignment with the West
  • the country’s recent economic growth, with an emphasis on economic liberalisation, privatisation, promotion of tourism and encouragement of foreign investment
  • the position of Jordan as a point of continuity in an increasingly unstable Middle East.

This volume, intended for both academic and general readers, offers an overview of the history, politics and economics of this fascinating country and its role in a region disfigured by the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Product Description

Drawing on numerous visits to the country and interviews with a diversity of people, including King Abdullah, Alan George describes how Jordan's reasonably stable monarchical system, unlike that in most Arab countries, has allowed the halting development of civil society and maintained control through the skillful co-option of opponents rather than heavy-handed reliance on its secret police. What is daily life like? How do its parliamentary system and political parties work? How free are the media? What are the future prospects of this buffer "state without a nation"?

4. Budgeting in Local Government: Managing the Margins (Managing local government)

 Paperback: 212 Pages (1989-06-12)

Isbn: 0582031435

Editorial Review

Product Description
This book explores how local authorities in the UK have been affected by the increasing pressures on public spending. Drawing on a wide range of recent research, and in particular on the Public Administration Committee`s comparative study of 17 local authorities, the authors consider how local authorities prepare their budgets and set their rate levels. Central government has repeatedly sought to control local authority spending and taxing decisions more closely. Against this background the authors examine the role of the political parties in the budgetary process and the changes in local authorities` formal and informal structures. They conclude that control over budgets has become increasingly centralized through the formation of informal groups rather than the formal committee structures of the authority. They consider the strategies adopted by local authorities to deal with demands for expenditure reductions; the outputs of local authorities and the attempts to get greater value for money in local government. Finally, they argue that despite the many changes induced by the pressures of the last decade, local government budgeting is still chiefly a process of making incremental adjustments at the margins of expenditure. ... Product Description
This is the first comprehensive, multi-disciplinary book to address water policy in Jordan. Edited by the former Minister of Water and Irrigation of Jordan, with contributions by other prominent Jordanian and international water professionals, this volume covers such areas as the population-water resources equation in Jordan; institutional and legal frameworks; the data systems used for the assessment and formulation of water policy; water allocations and uses in municipal, industrial, and agricultural sectors; social and environmental issues; and water conflict with Jordan's neighbors.

The book is a must for readers interested in Middle East politics and the critical nature of water issues in the region. The book notes the importance of interaction with the outside world to augment water p>resources through trade, making the experience of Jordan relevant to other developing regions where water is scarce. It introduces the term shadow water to mean the scarce indigenous water resources that the import of agricultural and industrial commodities saves or replaces. The book shows how financially profitable it can be to treat water as a tradable commodity, to be exchanged peaceably across international borders.Haddadin and his distinguished contributors bring the water conflicts between Jordan and its neighbors, Israel and Syria, into sharp focus. The book includes a historical perspective on the development of water policies in Jordan and explores the significance of water in the religious, social, and political life of the country. ... Product Description
According to conventional wisdom, the national identity of the Jordanian state was defined by the ruling Hashemite family, which has governed the country since the 1920s. But this view overlooks the significant role that the "Arab street"--in this case, ordinary Jordanians and Palestinians--played and continues to play in defining national identity in Jordan and the Fertile Crescent as a whole. Indeed, as this pathfinding study makes clear, "the street" no less than the state has been a major actor in the process of nation building in the Middle East during and after the colonial era. In this book, Betty Anderson examines the activities of the Jordanian National Movement (JNM), a collection of leftist political parties that worked to promote pan-Arab unity and oppose the continuation of a separate Jordanian state from the 1920s through the 1950s.Using primary sources including memoirs, interviews, poetry, textbooks, and newspapers, as well as archival records, she shows how the expansion of education, new jobs in the public and private sectors, changes in economic relationships, the establishment of national militaries, and the explosion of media outlets all converged to offer ordinary Jordanians and Palestinians (who were under the Jordanian government at the time) an alternative sense of national identity. Anderson convincingly demonstrates that key elements of the JNM's pan-Arab vision and goals influenced and were ultimately adopted by the Hashemite elite, even though the movement itself was politically defeated in 1957. ... Excerpt: This article is part of the series:Politics and government ofJordan The record of human rights in Jordan continues to be a matter of concern for many international human rights groups but there have been a series of reforms in order to address these issues. However, the state of human rights in Jordan are the best in the Middle East as stated by Amnesty International. The Jordanian Government has proven to be very receptive to recommendations and reports issued by human rights watchdogs. Jordan has made extensive reforms in order to address human rights violations like prison abuse and torture in partnership with the EU. Jordan has the lowest risk of human rights violations in the Middle East and North Africa and one of the lowest in the world in a study performed by Maplecroft which used Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch reports to compile its human rights monitoring system. When compared to other states in the Middle East, Jordan ranks very highly. Jordan is recognised as the most democratic monarchy in the region and ranks higher than many republics being the 5th most democratic nation in the Middle East and the 3rd in the Arab World. Jordan is also the only nation in the Middle East and North Africa that is a member of the International Criminal Court, which prosecutes those who commit crimes against humanity, war crimes, aggression, and genocide. Jordan is a party to many human rights agreements, including Th...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=6411325 ... Read more
