5-0 out of 5 stars Tasty little historical morsels about Iowa
I purchased this delightful book for my children a few years ago. It contains a series of historical facts about the state of Iowa, one for each letter of the alphabet. My children were fascinated by some of the entries and my son used some of them in his schoolwork about the history of the state. I work in computers and they were astounded to learn that the computer was in fact invented in Iowa. There were many other instances when they came to me and excitedly said, "Daddy, did you know that . . . ?"
This is a wonderful book of historical facts suitable for children in the 6-10 years of age range. I highly recommend that you get it if you have children of that age.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun History
This ABC book is a wonderful way to introduce your child to some of the fun and interesting history of Iowa.Readers will discover some little known facts about the state, through real-life pictures and cute illustrations.Mrs. Gensicke really understands what will captivate a young audience and employs her knowledge of the young reader in this book.Audiences of all ages will be surprised at facts they will pick up about a small, but very wonderful state. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Iowa book
This book provides good details of life in Iowa that children can understand.Good info to use for reports or for younger students.Sidebar information also helpful for residents just wanting more history on the state in which they live!

5-0 out of 5 stars Suitable for a wide range of ages
A very pleasant picture book for preschoolers, as well as a compendium of additional information for independent readers.Highly recommened.
I am pleased that another adult reviewer prizes her book. However, the persons in Grant Wood's American Gothic are his sister Nan and his dentist.Picture is on loan from the Chicago Art Institue to the Cedar Rapids [IA] Museum of Art this fall [2005.]Wood was a long-time teacher in the Cedar Rapids public schools.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn about Iowa
I was given this book as a baby gift because I grew up in Iowa.By reading this book, I learned things about the state that I never knew. For instance, I did not know that the American Gothic painting is really a farmer and his daughter.H is for Hawkeye will be a keepsake for my family.I will be able to show my son pictures of and information about the state I was raised in.

I like the format with the simple rhymes and the additional paragraphs with more information about each letter's detail. The illustrations are very well done and appealling.I will be giving this book to several children this holiday season and I will be looking at other state alphabet books in this series. This is a wonderful way to teach history and geography of our great country. ... Mark Twain once famously said "there was but one solitary thing about the past worth remembering, and that was the fact that it is past and can't be restored."  Well, over recent years, The British Library, working with Microsoft has embarked on an ambitious programme to digitise its collection of 19th century books.

There are now 65,000  titles available  (that's an incredible 25 million pages) of material ranging from works by famous names such as  Dickens, Trollope and Hardy as well as many forgotten literary gems , all of which can now be printed on demand and purchased right here on Amazon.

3-0 out of 5 stars Misinformation in a beautiful book
I think it is important that books present correct information -- kids use these books for reports; and everyone uses them forknowledge.
page 7 -- a photo of the Mississippi River from the hills near the foot of Main Street in McGregor, Iowa -- is incorrectly identified as "The Des Moines River"I wished that authors and editors would verify and know that what they present is correct.
I am happy to see the author writes about the Driftless area in Northeast Iowa -- a place of hills, valleys, and ridges -- a beautiful area called the Little Switzerland of Iowa
Overall this is a beautiful book with beautiful pictures and a nice look at the state.
-- I think it would be relevant in the list of famous Iowans in history to mention the Ringlings (four of the Ringling brothers were born in McGregor and the family lived here for 12 years, doing their first childhood "Pin and Penny circus" in McGregor)The Ringlings are important in the history of this country and Iowa should be proud of their past here.
the author does a nice job -- however I often wonder why publishers don't have someone familiar or from the state be the writer of that state's information. There is much to be learned from actually being there.Yes, I do have what may be considered as more regard for my particular place in the world -- but being here I also know what I'm referring to.If you really want to know what our state of Iowa is like don't accept the cliches or the info you may get from unreliable sources...find a source that knows and has been here or lives here. ... Excerpt: Woodman Hollow State Preserve -Many of the rock bluffs lining the interior of the preserve are composed of sandstones, limestones, and dolostones. The rock was produced over time from chemical and physical processes acting on the bed of ancient marine seaways that once covered vast portions of North America between 65 and 550 million years ago. The shoreline of the ancient seaways migrated back and forth from roughly Oklahoma to Illinois, and the river delta systems deposited clay, mud, peat, and channel sands across the area. Over time, these deposits were compacted and cemented into the familiar rock formations observed today. Significant erosion of glacial deposits by the Des Moines River and associated tributaries has helped to expose these deposits over time after the retreat of the Wisconsin Glaciation about 12,000 to 14,000 years before present. Two man-made rock shelters found within the preserve provided evidence to suggest that Woodland Indians or Archaic Indians inhabited the area as early as 2,800 years before present. The Iowa Board of Conservation purchased the land that would become Woodman Hollow in 1927 from A. S. Woodman. The original intent of the area was for it to be developed as a state park, and in the 1930s the Civilian Conservation Corps constructed an access road, two latrines, some trails, and the foundations for a trail bridge. The State of Iowa later decided to discontinue development of the area and to leave it in its natural condition. The land was officially designated as a biological, geological, and archaeological state pr...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=21290995 ... Read more
