3-0 out of 5 stars Needs Correction and More Work
This book was required for a MT class.I have found several discrepencies in this book and errors in the review questions.I think this book would be confusing for someone without any background in immunology because it jumps around a lot and doesn't paint a very good picture.I wonder why my department chose this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Worst Textbook Ever
SUMMARY: This book is poorly organized and does a horrendous job of explaining the subject matter to someone learning it for the first time. It is heavily technical, and does not explain anything so much as state a string of facts. The author often uses terms and concepts in one chapter that are not explained or defined until several chapters later. The few diagrams and charts included are just as complicated and confusing as the text, and are puzzles within themselves.
It is the worst textbook I have ever used, and I think a class would be better with NO textbook rather than this one.

REVIEW: I already owned the 3rd edition of this book, and was hugely disappointed when a new class I was taking required the 4th edition.

What is true of the 3rd edition is true of the fourth:

Like everyone else has said (except perhaps the first review, which was likely written by the author or her family) this book is poorly organized and hard to follow. I think it lacks a SINGLE sentence that is written in "plain English". Furthermore, rather than attempting build your knowledge stone by stone, it often uses terms and concepts in one chapter which are not defined or explained until several chapters later. It does not explain ANYTHING, ever, and simply states a long string of technically heavy facts which are nearly impossible to digest.
I cannot convey to you how much I hated this book. If your class requires it, pray to god you have a professor good enough to make up for what this book lacks.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly organized
I have been a medical technologist for 16 years and have taught immunology for 12 years in the classroom and clincial setting. This book is poorly organized and not relevant to the normal clinical lab.New terms for a med tech student are used in the first chapter and then defined in later chapters. There is an entire section on RID which only high volume reference labs use and is no longer recommended by ASCP to be covered in med tech schools. The lack of newer illustrations and photographs, and boring layouts of tables and charts is also a negative.I have actually given our students websites to refer to instead of sections in this book to complete their objectives.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too complex for words
This book along with others by the author are extremely complex and confusing to a student who does not have a working knowledge of this subject. It is as if she went through the dictonary to see how hard of words she could use to make herself look "super dooper" smart. You would have to be a medical student to even get the gist of what she is saying. This book's lack of color and understandable diagrams makes it even harder to follow. I would not recommend this book to anyone but PhDs, MDs, and someone who enjoys being utterly confused.

1-0 out of 5 stars A book about as good as her teaching...
This book is complex. Any normal student would be completely overwhealmed by this book geared more towards Medical School students rather than traditional college students. The language is too technical and the photos are laughable. There are no colorful pictures for those of us who like to be able to actually see what we are learning, there is no clear cut explaination of any of the suggested topic, and all in color green and the suggested photograph on page 199. Other than subtle hints of green, this black and white "textbook" is utterly and completely boring! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE!!
I purchased this book a few months ago for the course I am taking. The book is well written and provides a wealth of information.
HOWEVER, BEWARE!!This book does NOT come with ANY type of internet or computer support of ANY kind!!!There is no CD with the book, no supporting website, etc. So if you have even the simplest of questions that you would rather not bother your professor with (or have at 2 am when you seem to be alone), there is nothing to help you with this.
Like I said, the book is wonderful but the Author and/or publishing company needs to get with the 21st Century as well as with "Today's Student".

2-0 out of 5 stars Klaus must update or perish
Just a quick note: Dr. Elgert's text is 10 years old.. 10!That's before the human genome came out, and what's more, the book is hopelessly outdated on a number of points.First of all, a lot of good science has been put out in the 10 years since its publication. Second, his illustrations look like their were made in MSPaint (and they very well may have been). Moreover, he reprintedhis old edition at some point, but in black and white, and on rough, heavier paper.Buyer beware - the cover is identical.

LUCKILY.. if you don't go to Virginia Tech, I'm sure you're not in danger of exposure to this opaque anachronism of a textbook...

Product Description
Reflecting on the connection between the rise in chronic immune disorders and toxic environmental and lifestyle patterns, herbalist and acupuncturist Jason Elias and collaborator Katherine Ketcham looked to the 5,000-year-old The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Medicine to seek clues for restoring the balance of body and mind.

In Chinese Medicine for Maximum Immunity, Elias and Ketcham show how to use the preventive strategies and gentle, supportive remedies of traditional Chinese medicine to heal contemporary chronic illnesses and bolster immunity. The book teaches readers how to identify which element--Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water--most directly influences them and how to correct imbalances that can lead to particular physical, emotional, and spiritual disorders with step-by-step instruction for using stress-reduction techniques, diet and exercise, herbs, and acupressure. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A review of Immuno. A little hard for newbies in the subject
I bought this book because it was needed in my course. But if you are new to the COMPLEX world of Immunology, then beware! Then you can skip to Parslow-Stites and be prepared for the test. If you already have concepts in this subject, then go for it, you will not be dissapointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, readable, and basic introduction to immunology
This book is a bit under 300 pages and is small and easy to carry around, although not quite pocket sized. It lives up to its title and does indeed give the reader a basic and bare bones overview of immunology. A chapter can be read in about an hour and a dedicated student could read the entire book in a week. We used this with our first-year immunology course in medical school and I read the text in its entirety four entire times. The chapters are designed to be more or less self contained, and there is a lot of repetition, although I found this to be beneficial in terms of actually committing the material to memory. For first time students of immunology, I highly recommend this text as a starting point. It's small size make it ideal for quick review before taking the USMLE exam, as well, while larger books would be unsuitable for this task.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures and format
Easy to use, easy to read. I enjoyed this even though it was a library copy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent graphics to understand visually
This book is very concise and has excellent pictures and tables to depict the most pertinent information about Immunology. The graphics and tables are all colorful and easy to understand. That said, the book is not as detailed as some other books out there, but for my course I took in pharmacy school, it was good enough. Where it lacked in detail I picked up in the lecture. This book is excellent for understanding immunology, especially if it's your first time ever taking immunology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing figures! Absolutely reader friendly.
This book is flat out the best if you want to understand immunology!
The figures are key! And the text presentation style makes it very palpable even for someone with a non-bio background.

Product Description
Integrative Rheumatology offers a new and much-needed perspective in disease and symptom management, blending conventional medicine with alternative approaches not typically included in a Western medical practice. While conventional treatments can provide considerable symptomatic relief and can even slow the progression of many rheumatologic conditions, integrative treatment incorporating lifestyle interventions, mind-body approaches, and practices such as acupuncture and meditation into conventional medical therapies can improve quality of life, reduce medication dosages, and are generally better tolerated. In this book, researchers and clinicians highlight specific gaps in conventional rheumatologic care and examine how alternative approaches may be ideally suited to address these missed opportunities. Here, the authors introduce topics not typically addressed in conventional rheumatology texts, including nutritional therapies, exercise, herbal medicine, mind/body approaches, Ayurveda, and energy medicine. The contributors, all of whom have a background in academic medicine, share the approaches that they have found most effective in their own practices, basing their work on the best scientific evidence available. Ultimately, an understanding of complementary and alternative approaches to healing can help clinicians care for their patients using the best proven therapies to modify disease progress and relieve pain and disability. ... This is a HUGE and generally very comprehensive book except there are only two mentions of ME (CFS) en passant. (I do have to give props for those phrases being correct though) ME is a common (1M+ in US) and extremely debilitating NeuroEndocrine Immune Disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than fundamental
This is, undoubtdly, the most complete guide for immunology. It shows all aspects of the issue, including biochemistry and disease context. Futhermore, the interaction between innate response and adaptive response is aborded, once is rarely showed by the other books. I do recommend!

If you have lot of time to read, yes, this book is a MUST. But if you have 40 exams plus practices plus meetings plus, plus, plus.....Kuby is a good option. Anyway, never trust only in a single book.

Product Description
Designed to reflect the challenges of practicing biomedical science today, The Fundamentals of Biomedical Science series combines essential basic science with insights into laboratory practice, demonstrating how an understanding of the biology of disease is coupled with the analytical approaches that lead to diagnosis. Assuming only a minimum of prior knowledge, the series reviews the full range of disciplines to which a biomedical scientist may be exposed, from microbiology to cytopathology to transfusion science.

A new volume in this exciting series, Immunology offers biomedical science students insights into the function of the immune system, the frontline of defense against pathological disease, and the diagnostic techniques used to identify associated malfunctions and disorders. By examining the key immunological principles and scientific basis of laboratory techniques--with a focus on the biomedical scientist's role in the diagnostic laboratory--the authors provide students with everything they need to know in order to prepare for specialist studies in immunology. Case studies cover current tests, the rationale behind their use, the technologies employed, the quality measures applied, and the ways in which clinicians interpret test results in order to help patients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Speedy service
Book came very quickly in great shape exactly as described on the website.I would order another book from them.

2-0 out of 5 stars Confusing Book
This book is written from a researchers point of view. It thoroughly describes how and why a "insert concept" was discovered and why it's important.
However, no test you will ever take will ask you any of that information. To read this book, you're required to dig through the text and hunt for important facts. The authors go off on too many tangents.

I purchased this book instead, Immunology for Medical Students: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Accessand highly recommend it. It's written from a medical provider's point of view. So all the unnecessary information is cut out.
You are left with only key concepts and chapters that are no more than 10 pages long.

If you're required to buy the Kuby for class, I still recommend buying the Immuno for Med. Students as a reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressed
I bought this as a supplement to my Microbiology class and the textbook that was required for the class. This book definitely clarifies things and conveniently organizes the material well. I read this and reference this more than my GIANT textbook! I am very satisfied with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book!
Put it this way. I finished med-school, Internal Medicine residency and have been a hospitalist for three years. I'm going back to training in Infectious Diseases for a fellowship. I have been through bunch of books in my life and can say that this one is a darn good review of Microbiology. The proper topics have in depth review, but it is not too meticulous that you would get lost in bench research type topics. I'm certainly speaking from a clinicians perspective with ID intentions, but in general I have quite an interest in microbiology. I generally recommend it for sure. Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars very good
This purchase is very smoothly and the quality of the book is pretty good! Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Microbiology and Immunology Book
I bought this book for my microbiology course and for review for the boards. Before this book, I read Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple. While Ridiculous was an entertaining read, but the silliness kinda got in the way of information and the explanations were generally lacking. This book is well organized and the depth is great.I finally figured out what the A and B subunits on the cholera exotoxin are and the fact that that mechanism is not exclusive to cholera. The immunology chapters in the book are equally as good.Ever have any questions about complement or hypersensitivities?Well there is a chapter dedicated to each (albeit, only 3-5 pages). Finally the appendix is very high yield. There are charts that organize organisms by geographic region, foods for food poisoning, animals, and vectors. There is also a section that has a quick review of all the organisms covered in the book. There's a lot of information, so it might take longer to get through than a rapid review book, but started earlier it should be high yield.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for what it is
This is a very good medical micro book for someone who needs a reasonable complete and accessible reference. It's not a definitive micro book. It's not "Clinical Microbiology made ridiculously simple" either.I find micro really painful as a general rule.I'd never sit down and read this book from cover to cover. That said when I need to know about a particular bug this book generally tells me everything I'd want to know in an organized and understandable fashion. ... Editorial Review

    Product Description
Immunology, the third volume in the four volume set, The Mouse in Biomedical Research, is a completely new addition to this series, dedicated to mouse immunology. It is based on the vast body of knowledge which has made the mouse the model of choice when studying immunity in man. Arguably more is known about the immune system in mice than any other species except man. In large part this is due to the power of genetic engineering to delineate molecular mechanisms. In this volume we present an Overview to mouse immunology, including both the innate and adaptive immune systems, followed by 15 chapters, each dealing with a specific area of immunology in the mouse. These chapters illustrate the power of genetic engineering in dissecting each component of the immune response from the development of lymphoid tissues to signal transduction pathways in activated cells. ...
