Extractions: Background Resource: The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict By Yifat Susskind, Associate Director As in Ireland, India and Cyprus, British colonial "divide and rule" tactics culminated in November 1947 in the partition of Palestine into two newly independent states one Palestinian Arab and one Jewish. UN Resolution 181 allotted Jews, who were less than one-third of the population and owned only 8% of the land, 56% of the territory of Palestine. Palestinians saw the partition plan as a grave injustice, especially since most Jews in Palestine were recent arrivals. Fighting broke out between Jewish forces and local Palestinian militias. In May 1948, the British evacuated Palestine, and Israel declared independence. Several adjacent Arab countries declared war against the new state. During the war, Israeli forces destroyed over 500 Palestinian villages and captured 78% of historic Palestine.

This movement will include the different communities in the region and abroad: Palestinians in Israel, Palestine and elsewhere; Jewish communities in different parts of the world; and people of all sorts who want to be part of the movement. The goal of the movement is to end the violence and to build trust among individuals and communities in the region. Even if a peace agreement is reached by the politicians, it cannot be implemented if there is no trust. And if civil society succeeds in beginning to build trust, then politicians will be forced to reach an agreement. The movement is based on equality and mutual solidarity. In the past, Israeli and international peace movements have tended to be one-sided; movements, which expressed solidarity with Palestinians. Today, Israelis need Palestinian help in ending the suicide bombers; just as Palestinians need Israeli help in ending the occupation. International civil society needs the help of both Israelis and Palestinians in ending terrorism and the war on terrorism.
