The success of this combination of enjoyment and hard work is shown in our results: the 1998-2002 pass rate is 98%, with 80% of our students obtaining grades A, B or C in 2002 and 60% obtaining A or B. AQA GEOGRAPHY SPECIFICATION B We are pleased to be offering this Specification, as it is in many ways an improvement on the Syllabus we had been successfully teaching since 1993. The content has been decreased, allowing us to do a thorough job of teaching complex and interesting subjects and we have a lot of excellent resources, ranging from a study area equipped with textbooks, periodicals and networked computers to Interactive whiteboards in the teaching rooms. The focus is on change in the world we live in, and we have selected options to teach that are our specialisms and enthusiasms. Students can either follow a one year course leading to AS Geography or a two year course leading to A Level Geography.

Maybe it is due to the fact that during the 8th century some exiles from Iceland went to an at that time unknown country with a harsh climate. But to make the officials in Iceland more or less jealous they said they lived in a wonderful green country. Others say that Erik the Red, who went there from Iceland around 980 (in exile after being accused of murder), called it Greenland to attract new inhabitants. Maybe it is true. There is also an other, more scientifical, explanation. It is true that before the year 1500 there was a milder climate in Greenland, in almost the whole northern hemisphere. So Greenland could have been more greener than it is today. After 1500 till 1800 there has been the called Short Ice-age. Temperatures dropped heavily, especially in Greenland; it dropped so low, that inhabitants from abroad, Normans, starved to death. The third explanation is simple. The most southern part is in fact very green, you will find sheepfarms and a lot of green grass. It is not that strange, knowing that the southern tip lies at the same geographical height as Oslo (Norway) and St. Petersburg (Russia)

International Glaciological Society British Geomorphological Research Group Quaternary Research Association My research aims to build links between process dynamics and landform chronology in glacial and periglacial systems, with an emphasis on the Holocene. Through such an approach, landform-based interpretations of environmental change may be extended and improved. Studies of active forms establishes rates of change and sensitivity, which inform chronological interpretations of dated fossil landforms. Work on debris-covered glaciers has shown how their activity and climatic response differ significantly from "clean" glaciers but whose deposits have high preservation potential. More recently, I have been working on tephrochronological dating of Holocene landforms in Iceland, to explore the response of terrestrial landforms to ocean-atmosphere circulation changes in the North Atlantic region. But what Iceland mainly has is volcanoes dozens of them, including some brewing under ice and seawater. In our third installment of this week's series on Iceland, the World's Rebecca Roberts introduces us to some folks who revel in the island's geological oddities. This is a sound you hear a lot of in Iceland: (sound of burbling) It's a little pool of steaming hot water bubbling up from underground. The treeless, moonscape of Iceland is full of these pools. You can even bathe in them and lots of people do. (sound of kids shouting and splashing in a lagoon) This hot springs is the Blue Lagoon. It was formed in the 1970's when a geothermal plant started using the underground water to heat houses. The used water was then released back into the ground but it was never absorbed. A mineral in the water reacted with the lava-filled soil and it sealed, forming a very large pool. Blue Lagoon's public relations director Magnea Gudmundsdottir says it wasn't long before people were swimming in it.

He is lying on a Turkish carpet that she also brought back. It turns out to be magic and called Mustafa and before we know it, Tim has been whisked away on a fantastic journey to Turkey. Their first stop is at Kusadasi on the Aegean Sea (that can talk!). From there Tim gets a bird's eye view of all that surrounds him: the Greek islands to the west; Istanbul to the north; farmland to the north west; the home of St. Nicholas to the south east; the Mediterranean Sea to the south and in the east Mount Ararat, the highest point in Turkey.

Extractions: Geography Department Iceland Study Tour, July 2002 Students at Gigjokull Glacier, Southern Iceland, July 2002 An exciting, eye-opening and rewarding Geography fieldtrip to Iceland took place during the Summer of 2002. 4 Geography staff and 33 Year 11, 12 and 13 students spent an illuminating and exhausting 5 days travelling through Iceland, taking full advantage of the 24hour daylight. Within 30 minutes of arrival at Keflavik airport, we were at work! The tapping of geothermal energy was the topic for study at the Sudurnes Power station on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Students gained an introductory insight to the complex forces at play in Iceland from a lecture and by following an exhibition located in an underground fissure! After this, students and staff relaxed in the Blue Lagoon a thermal spa produced from the power stations waste water. Then on to the coach for a 2 hour transit across a bubbling volcanic landscape to our welcoming accommodation at Hvolsvollor. The following days were packed full of stimulating geographical activities in a wild and often awe-inspiring landscape.
