5-0 out of 5 stars Certification?
Mr. Hunter is associated with Tacoma Community College here in Washington State. He provides in person instruction but also Video based instruction that can provide the necessary contact hours for full fledged Certification by Hypnotherapy certification bodies.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for the consumer
. The book instructs the reader on how to use self-hypnosis to change areas of his or her life that they would like to change.

I need to tell the reader that I have met Mr, Hunter several times and have attended several workshops that he conducted. I have also read all of his books. Mr. Hunter is responsible for inspiring me to be the best Hypnotherapist I can be. I also feel that I have had the best training from Mr. Hunter that I have had in all of my hypnosis training.

The first part of the book educates the reader on the history and basic facts of hypnosis. The second part of the book informs the reader of the role of the Subconscious and how to program it. This part of the book also describes stress management. Part three describes the process of defining your goals for self-hypnosis and the process of putting them to work with self-hypnosis. Part four describes creative daydreaming, Part five describes how to inject power into your self=hypnosis.

The book ends with a set of questions and answers about self-hypnosis and a glossery of hypnosis term. Finally, Mr. Hunter a;sp provides some self-hypnoosis scripts and affirmations..

This book is well written and in my opinion is the best book of self-hypnosis available. It is clearly written and Mr. Hunter gets his point across clearly on all subjects. My only complaint is that Mr. HUnter is too modest. He attributes his skills to his mentor, Charles Tebbits. Mr. Tibbets was a great hypnotist and is one of the pioneers of modern hypnotism. Mr. Hunter studied under Mr. Tebbits but I believe that Mr. Hunter has taken what he learned from Mr Tibbets about the art of self-hypnosis and taken it to new heights. I reccommend this book to anyone who is serious about making real changes in their life.

Book was delivered very fast.
This book details self hypnosis in an easy readable format.

1-0 out of 5 stars very poor, tells nothing...
very poor, i do not believe some body could tell things that everybody knows, waste of money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Typical of poor-quality Self-Hypnosis books.
This book is poor quality and fundamentally misleading in places. There is nothing of value here which you can't get on the net for free.Just do a search for "Self-Hypnosis Scripts" If I taught my clients how to do self-hypnosis in this way I doubt if they would have much success. All the stuff about Alpha and Beta brainwaves is just an intellectual red-herring and tells you nothing practical about the attitudes of mind which facilitate trance induction. Hunter's style and his techniques are straight out of last century. If you read some of the old books you'll be surprised how little he has added. He provides very basic information and scripts for eye-fixation and progressive relaxation inductions but no real guidelines on how to make them more effective. He does not address the typical obstacles which, e.g., self-hypnosis groups tend to encounter and overcome. He doesn't provide adequate advice for clients who report that they have difficulty physically relaxing, or who feel excessively aware and analytic of the experience. This book provides about half the story of self-hypnosis and its the half which most people know already, or which they could find on the net or in any number of other books on the pop-psychology bookshelf.

Product Description
The purpose of this bold new book is two?fold: to demonstrate that hypnosis is a viable and powerful approach to the treatment of depression; and to confront traditional criticism of its use head on. In so doing, Dr. Yapko chooses to embrace rather than to ignore the opportunity for debate. The result is an honest, well?rounded exploration, as compelling as it is instructive. The first chapters lay the groundwork for the book's dual focus, opening with a discussion of depressions. The author's use of the plural here reflects his understanding of the problem as being as broadly defined as the people who present with it. The second chapter focuses on the historical perspective of depression and hypnosis as "forbidden friends", shedding new light on old myths about the use of hypnosis leading to hysteria, and even suicide. In the third chapter, Dr. Yapko defines hypnosis as a flexible and enlightened tool that offers precisely the multidimensionality that the problem demands. Other chapters include Hypnotic Aspects of Nonhypnotic Therapies, Depression and Symptomatic Trances, Stages of Treatment, The Role of Expectancy in Treating Depression, Utilizing Trance in Treatment, Structuring Therapeutic Learnings, and Integrating Hypnosis into Therapy. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not complete, but good
With the word "medicine" in the title, I was looking for emphasis on medical hypnosis.Recommend for beginner and intermediate practitioner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and useful
I am a Holistic Health Practitioner that wanted to incorporate hypnotherapy into my practice and purchased this book for an overview of the process. I was amazed at the thoroughness of the information. By just studying this book, I was able to hypnotize my husband with ease and he insisted he could not be hypnotized. He was astounded at how easily he succumbed to the process.

I must practice more before I actually put it into my therapy regime, but I feel this book affords adequate information to allow the limited use of hypnosis in my practice. I plan to delve deeper into the mysteries of hypnosis to enable me to have more expertise to offer my clients in the future.

The reason for only 4 stars is I felt it was rather redundant in many cases and he jumped around quite a bit in his explanations and would refer in one chapter to the use of a procedure that is not explained until several chapters later. It was not cohesive in content. However, that said, it did provide valuable information.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent hypnotherapy text!
This book has to be approached, that is, read, from the standpoint of a hypnotherapist learning to improve his skill set.It is, in a way, a difficult book to read because reading scripts tends to put you into trance. You must consistently read it with an eye toward picking out the phrasing used and the intent of the wording in the scripts. If this is done, the text is quite instructive and complete. The casual reader
looking for party tricks won't find them here. This is a book
for those with serious interest willing to let its wisdom
permeate their subconscious slowly, slowly, deeper and deeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for intermediates
I am relatively new to hypnosis.I have read a few books and have managed to advance my understanding of the practice with each.In my opinion, this book took me from beginner to intermediate. Some of the claims seem outrageous, but, I think that is part of his point anyway.I feel like I have taken a giant step forward after reading this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative!
As a hypnotherapist, it was nice to read more of the medical approch to hypnosis.Lots of information about why and how we get sick.It made me feel a little more knowlegable so that not only can I help, but I could also explain why and how we get sick in laymans terms, very advantagious in the pretalk. In reading the book, some outdated technics were used,(probably filler for the book). I'm not saying that they don't work, but these techniecs are no longer used.

Overall the book has lots of good scripts, hypnotic inductions, deepening technics & tests.Another book to add to my collection! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational but not psychology
This book is intended to be an inspirational presentation by an athletic coach or trainer, not a psychology book.So the reader needs to be a little forgiving at times about assertions with no citations for claims.I actually found the book useful, and I am sure the author can motivate an athlete or team.

5-0 out of 5 stars Football Skills Unlimited!!!
Unlimited Sports Success does not claim to make an amateur into a professional, there are too many other variants in the world, but it does explain a great deal about what goes on in the mind of the athlete. Aspects that we can all use. I find myself constantly returning to this book as my life progresses and other tips become relevant, I often find myself remembering something Stephen wrote thus return to the book for some advice.

I have lent this book out on so many occasions in the past, but now am keen to keep it in my own hands as it is often tough to get it back. The reason the book is so sought after from my friends is that it deals with so many different sports. My father stole it for his Golfing advice, my cousin wanted to increase his Martial Arts internal energy (whatever that means!) my Sister wants to lose weight (whilst continuing to stuff her face!) and I need it for my Football skills.
If you choose to buy this book - take my advice write your name in the front cover!

5-0 out of 5 stars The use of hypnosis as a medical tool in the field of psychology and psychiatry predates Sigmund Freud
The use of hypnosis as a medical tool in the field of psychology and psychiatry predates Sigmund Freud. "Healing Scripts: Using Hypnosis To Treat Trauma And Stress" by Dr. Marlene Hunter (Certificant and Fellow of the College of Family Physicians of Canada) draws upon her more than thirty years experience working with highly dissociative patients. As a past president of the American Society of clinical hypnosis, she writes a particular expertise on the subject of utilizing hypnosis to clinically address acute stress disorders including pain in all of its forms, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (with sections on denial, hypervigilance and hyper-arousal), acute stress, sleep disorders, and dissociation disorders (including ego-strengthening and integration). Of note is the section focused on helping children suffering from acute stress and trauma. An impressively informative work, "Healing Scripts" is particularly recommended reading for students and practitioners of psychiatric medicine, and a core addition to professional and academic library Psychology, Psychiatry, and Medical Science instructional reference collections. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Do not be a vegetarian that eats "Jell-O"
This book is not the best at any particular aspect of hypnosis. However, it attempts to breakdown superstition and complex explanations to something useful for the proletariats. Some people take aspirin for their headache and do not care how it works. More discerning want to know where it comes from and the mechanics of the cure. The same holds true of hypnotism.

There may be better, newer, clearer books out there on the subject and practice. However, this book may have that unique way of explaining that helps you get a grasp.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sure, I could agree with the other reviewers I read, but:
This, in my humble opinion is a very good hypnosis book. The fact that he simplifies Thomson Jay Hudson's complexities into a couple of laws or "theories", makes it very worth reading. He starts from there and then shows how the imagination makes hypnosis genuinely work. That SHOULD be the purpose of any good hypnosis book, to show how hypnosis works. Not to show silly case histories or be a map that "is" the territory. But rather, a map that defines the territories like any good map should. This is what this book is, a map that defines the territory and not "is" the territory. Now sure, it seems oversimplified to some of my fellow reviewers, okay, but if you're going for cutthroat working result; what works, works. And this works, period. It has what is neccessary. Period. That's all I'm saying. The simplified and neccessitated "It Works by RHJ" of hypnosis law and theory. Sure. Whoever you are, Rhodes, thanks.

Captain Josh.

1-0 out of 5 stars Antiquated
This book is from the turn of the 20th century. It is antiquated and irrelevant, except for those interested in the history of hypnosis. If you want a historical relic, this book is for you.If you want to learn modern hypnosis, don't bother.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hypnosis: Theory, Practice and Application
I obtained this book from the local library. The copyright date is 1950! That may explain why it seems so dated. It is!On the other hand, that very fact made the book interesting. While I don't intend to purchase this book, it was worth a quick scan--especially for the inductions-- to see how hypnosis was viewed over fifty years ago compared to today.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I hoped.
I was really looking forward to reading this book and didn't even finish it all the way.I don't know very much about the author and I am not sure where he gets his information but it seems very outdated and not some ofthe information seems wrong.I am glad I didn't pay full price for thisbook.I am sure there is a better book on hypnois then this one.Myadvice is to not waste your money on this book. ... Geoffrey Ronning's extremely successful dual career on stage as a performer and off stage as a mentor, coach and teacher to other successful stage hypnotists qualifies him in spades.Whether you re an aspiring beginner or a seasoned professional, you will put down this book believing that you can be a more successful stage hypnotist... and knowing exactly how you can do it. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars I expected more, quite deceived actually
Okay, I'll tell you exactly what's in this book.
Geoffrey Ronning is a great hypnotist, that's why I decided to purchase his book... little did I know that 50% of this book didn't have anything to do with hypnosis...

CONS: I have the book with me right now: there are 385 pages and page 247 to 385 (138 pages!) talk about random guys that had Mr.Ronning as a teacher and that are now successful. ''Ohh look at me, I now make over 34 billion $ a minute thanks to Ronning! He's DA BEST BLABALBALA!! (I'm exaggerating, but you understand my point)''. I didn't buy this book to learn about other peoples success with hypnosis.. certainly not 138 pages of it! I bought this book to enhance my knowledge about hypnosis and maybe even learn how to perform it. Also, almost every few pages, Ronning will mention money: ''By using this method, you'll be able to have more bookings and make more profit!''.
There's only 1 pretalk script (it doesn't matter for the pre-talk, I'll tell you why after) and 1 induction script. The induction is the one he made up (and apparently with other people.. whatever): EKG rapid induction.Though it's just stupid that he would only teach us 1 method.. He doesn't even talk about instant or progressive because they're either ''boring'' (progressive) or ''too dangerous'' (instant).. which is not entirely true. He talks about how to set up a stage and where to put the microphone and the chairs ... which is ... not what I was looking for..

PROS: This book teaches you everything from the start. It's only good for people who are starting off. The pre-talk is very well explained. There's one pre-talk script (sadly, it was written for a large audience.. and like we're starting off.. we'd most likely start on a smaller group like our friends...), BUT he explains thoroughly how to CREATE your own pre-talk. I must say that I was able to make my own. So that's not a problem.
He also give you a good list of things you can put people under (skits) hypnosis. This book is only good to learn the basics of hypnosis but nothing more.

Basically this book is great for people like me who started looking at Youtube videos on hypnosis and thought it was cool and wanted to learn more. Keep in mind that if you have the slightest knowledge about hypnosis, this book is not for you, you really have to be a pure beginner. If you which to learn how to perform hypnosis, you're better off buying hypnosis DVDs or attend a course in your area.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good !
Different of others books of hypnosis. This book really explaine in details. A "how to do book".

5-0 out of 5 stars Nathan Thomas Reviews Geoff Ronning's Book
There are many hypnosis books on the market today, some gems, but too many which read like school essays simply rehashing the same old fashioned information.

I am delighted to say the Ronning Guide To Modern Stage Hypnosis is very much one of these rare Gems.
The book is written in a punchy, fast paced and no BS manner which allows you to quickly learn exactly what you want to know.
Rather than just sticking to stage basics, Geoff Ronning teaches you hypnotic language skills and other exercises to allow you to hone your craft.

The exercises in the book after every section are essential for focusing on your goals and allowing you to better absorb and understand the material. These alone make this far more than just another stage hypnosis book.

Much to my surprise this book actually does give you all the tools to start from scratch and be a stage hypnotist - fully recommended.

Cheers
Nathan Thomas

2-0 out of 5 stars This Book should be Renamed
This Book should be renamed `A Brief Introduction to Stage Hypnosis'because that is all it truly is, a IntroBook.
I was rereading the reviews on this book and felt that there needs to be a true balance with his work. I became interested in Hypnosis about a year ago and this is one of the first books that I bought, only because it was up there on the amazon list and had so many positive reviews. When I got it in the mail I was excited, I read through it with a pen and notebook but after a few days it ended up on the shelf where it remains. To be totally honest this book only introduced me to some minor concepts and terms, that as a beginnerI didn't know, like `pre talk' and `inductions' but that is it, any serious student who is truly doing their homework and research into the subject matter will quickly see that it falls short on so many other issues.
The NLP stuff is superficial at best and can be found by scratching the surface of any NLP book. I was disappointed further with his book after studying "Hypnotherapy" by Dave Elman and realized that his EKG Induction is nothing but a rewritten work of Dave Elman's masterpiece.
Again any diligent student will see the difference between a book written by a man of Knowledge and Experience like Elman, Dr. Preston, Mcgill, Dr. Kappas and Boyne and one who is only trying to fill a hole in the market place with loose sand rather than firm concrete.
After reading many other Books on the history, theory, and practice of all forms of Hypnosis I likened Ronning to be like an old time wild west Snake Oil Salesman whose skilled pitch is better than his empty product.
I bought real full-length Stage Hypnosis Shows from other Hypnotist offthe Internet and E bay. I spent hours breaking the shows down and learning from them and I cannot find one Geoff Ronning show to study. There is none on the internet nor at his website.A Real Teacher, a Real Artist will be proud of his work and his work will stand as his testimony, other people opinions is secondary to the original work.
In the beginningI spent a lot of my hard-earned moneyon his products. I have his EKG DVDs and his home study course and I examined them and dissected them and quickly moved on to higher learning stuff and found his products to be exactly only `intro stuff',no real meat and potatoes.
I would give his book 2 stars because His marketing advice is much better than his Hypnosis advice. By reading between the lines I could tell that he has more experience in marketing than in Hypnosis. This book is an Ok read but will eventually take up space in your library,it is not for the serious student.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jump Start Your Hypnosis Career!
This is the best book I have read on how to become a stage hypnotist. Not only does Ronning teach you how to hypnotize, he also covers a variety of problems a stage hypnotist may encounter. Using personal experiences of his own and testimonials from his students he thoroughly explains what is involved to become a successful stage hypnotist. The book is full of a variety of exercises to help you understand the concepts Ronning teaches. Most importantly, these teach you how to develop your own language for your show. You will learn how to put your personality into your show. Ronning claims you can become a stage hypnotist in 21 days. With this book that can become a reality. After all, the first person you hypnotize is yourself. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Hypnosis for Booze Busting Beverly Hills Style
Truth is I don't know what makes this approach "Beverly Hills" like. But I do know that it can't hurt you and may help someone who is looking to stop a problem with alcohol. Nice female voice, soothing music and decent message.

I ordered it because, as a hypnotist practicing in Rhode Island, I am always interested in how other hypnotists handle different issues. And recently I have found I am dealing with more and more people challenged by alcohol and other addictions.

Will it get you off booze just by listening a couple of times? Who knows. Maybe. The important thing is that you get started and this CD may be a step in the right direction. It costs less than a couple of martinis in a reasonably priced bar so you really don't have that much to lose...except a habit that may be destroying you.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Program Worked for me.
After being a heavy drinker since high school (1964) and tring to quit for many years, I sent for your Alcohol Tape.

The first month I listened 2 or 3 times a day before I knew it I was 6 months sober then one year.

All I can say is Thank You, the program worked for me.

Sincerely.

1-0 out of 5 stars does not work
Not worth it.Made no difference at all; I read the book and listened to the CD daily for a while. The cd might make you relax a bit but that's about it.No magic here!

1-0 out of 5 stars worthless
The only thing that gets hypnotized is the money leaving your wallet for this book. Use the money for a salad instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars very helpful
this book and accompanied cd offer a way to get emotional control over your eating habits and reach what they call "your perfect weight".I have been using it for about a month and the more I use it, the less I eat (portion size) and the less cravings I have.I am convinced it works, plus it is super relaxing.

2-0 out of 5 stars not the voice for me
I recently started listening to the Paul McKenna CD for weight loss and was very pleased with the effect. I knew, however, that I might want or need some variety in the message, so I checked this out from the library. It's not a bad book. It has a lot of the same info as many books I've read on emotional eating or New Age thinking, but what I really got it for was the CD. Unfortunately for me, I do not like Dr. Gurgevich's delivery of the hypnosis sessions. Instead of sounding soothing, his voice kept going up and down in its stresses in an annoying way. I thought his wife sounded better. He does what my voice teachers told me not to do when speaking or singing. I recommend you see if your library has it so you can check it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Kickstart
Hands down, I am glad I spent the money on this book!

I'm always a little weary of buying "diet" books of any sort but I knew I had to kick my butt in my gear and luckily this was the kickstart I needed. While I still struggle with my relationship with food, its an on-going battle that I'm beginning to see myself winning. Not only has the hypnosis helped me stay motivated to eat healthier and exercise but it has helped me achieve a more positive image of myself. Another bonus is my vocabulary has expanded (thanks to the hypnosis), all the words I read are now making it out of my mouth.
I have found myself with a definite interest in reading and exploring the world of health and fitness. As far as actual weight loss goes I've lost 40lbs, (from my pre-pregnancy weight, 70lbs total if you count the baby weight too) so far. Its been 10 months since the baby was born and I have 25 more lbs to go to be bikini ready! Though I'm avoiding the scale as much as possible because I know muscle weighs more than fat and my dress size seems to shrink faster than the lbs on the scale.
bottom line: buy, borrow, or check out this book at the very least it might spark your interest in other health-minded things ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Guide to Hypnosis
This book helped me to get over my Panic attacks.

What I learned in this book still helps me years later to make discussions.I have learned to communicate with my subconscious and that is great.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Helpful Overview of Hypnosis.
The Complete Guide to Hypnosis is a great start for anybody wanting a general overview of hypnosis. The book is a little dated and sounds sexist at times, but most of the information presented is still very applicable to the present. The most useful section to me was the section on self hypnosis. LeCron teaches the reader how to induce a deep state of hypnosis and how self hypnosis can be used in many helpful ways.

4-0 out of 5 stars I've read Dr. Leslie Lecron before . .
I read a book by Dr. Leslie Lecron "many" years ago and it changed my life!
I followed his instructions to the tee and one thing I accomplished was a lifetime free of headaches! It has been many years since I read that book and I can honestly say I have never had a headache since. Also, the information he gave taught me to come to a place of complete relaxation whereby I was so very calm and relaxed and was making better, heathier decisions. I'm not sure why, but I had an impulse to reconnect with Dr. Lecron now and am looking forward to reading this latest book.
Will get back to you and let you know "what's up" after reading it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Down to earth information and recommendations.
Leslie M. LeCron is the author of several hypnosis books and this one lives up to it's title. He takes you through the information of hypnosis, how it works, how it can help you, what it can and cannot do, a bit of history and information on how to use it yourself.
The style is a bit dry at times and you have to work at it to keep going through a couple of the chapters but if you're willing to study the book and take his advice on how to get information from your subconscious and 'change your programming' from forgotten traumas, suggestions that were accepted by your sub-conscious but no longer serve their purpose, etc...the changes can seem almost magical as you communicate directly with your sub-conscious to change your thinking which changes your life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great course!
I purchased this on sale from Sounds True last year and I LOVE it. I don't listen to all of the CDs, but pick which ones out of the "apothecary" that I want to focus on. I have had great results by doing these exercises to control my own mind. In the past year I have lost weight, been more positive and have increased my happiness and confidence. I won't say it is all because of self-hypnosis, but it has been a key factor. Thank you Dr. Gurgevich for making this easily available in my home! I will be recommending this to friends and family.

5-0 out of 5 stars great fundamental "course"
"I had the extensive 16 CD kit for almost a year before trying to apply it to my current lifestyle, but I have been listening to the set pretty much as frequently as possible for the last 4 days.

To do this, I was able to "rip" the Cds to mp3 format and keep them on my laptop for frequent listening. I find I need background sounds while web-surfing or reading pdfs and online texts, and this set is so far excellent for this purpose, and I find I am absorbing valuable self help material that I will unquestionably utilize when specific needs arise!"

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE To Control Myself
I am very, very happy to own these hypnosis CD's, because as a professional clinical hyponotherapist I value this means of MY having hypnosis sessions by another professional. My sister first owned a set and shared them, but I discovered I was going to use them more than she and needed my OWN set.I could not be happier with this product.Thank you so much for making them very affordable and easy to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is five star and more. The most comprehensive course on-line, very well produced. Dr Gurgevich has an excellent voice, soothing, non-intrusive. He uses indirect method of taking one into trance and is very effective. He gives lot of intelligent information during the course of each CD and I found it very useful. He makes you understand things and that helps one accept hypnosis better. This ia a CLASSIC. Par excellence. Main thing is to keep doing your self-hypnosis, changes will surely come, slowly and steadily. No overnight cure self-hypnosis is, but rewards are worth pursuing it. I would recommend it to anyone who is serious about self-hypnosis. Also check out two more of his newer CDs - one is on Anxiety, 2nd is on Relaxation. Both are excellent. Presumably, another CD is coming on Deep Sleep. Looking forward to it. The guy is a gem in this field, you can see he has put in lot of hard work and brains into producing the CDs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Done...
This Self Hypnosis Home Study Course is very concise and well organized. It provides understanding and develops expertise, which can also be applied in Hypnosis with others.
This is a Good no-nonsense product, and I highly recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but read with caution
Overall there is some very useful information in here on the uses of hypnosis for pain control. It is written for clinicians, and so is free of some of the fluffier and more new age leanings of some other books on the subject. The potential buyer should be aware, however, that this is not a book with script ideas or lots of practical advice on how to phrase hypnotherapy sessions with pain patients.Rather, it provides an extensive overview of issues related to dealing with different kinds of pain patients and suggests how hypnosis is useful in these situations.

One aspect of the book that bothered me was that it seems suggest that pain without an obvious cause--which is often the case with chronic pain--is more likely to be psychosomatic in nature. In one passage it advises the hypnotherapist "to expect significant psychological factors in the maintenance of the patient's pain"if that patient "uses unusually colorful terms" to describe the pain, such as saying that it feels like "fish hooks" or "a red hot poker."One should be careful in making such sweeping generalizations.Intense burning sensations that patients might indeed describe as hot pokers that comes without an obvious physical cause, or that lasts long after an initial injury, is a classic description of reflexive sympathetic dystrophy pain. There are also many instances of inflammatory or nerve pain that is not easily diagnosed and that can feel like torture for the sufferer. It is extremely difficult, also, to describe different pain sensations."Colorful language" or even odd descriptions that might not make a lot of anatomical sense is not necessarily a clue that the pain is largely psychological in nature.More recent developments in the study of chronic pain confirm this.I am both a trained hypnotherapist and a chronic pain patient for the past three years, so I speak with experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Pain
This book goes beyond simple suggestion for pain. It encompasses the psychology of pain, which includes somatic, neuropathic and procedural pain. This book is an absolute must for anyone interested in pain management.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent. The definitive text.
As a lay person, I found that this book is not only a tool for clinicians, but also provides a valuable explanation of hypnosis for anyone with an interest in psychology. In his introductory chapter, Joseph Barbersuccinctly defines hypnosis and explains the phenomenon clearly andaccurately. He makes the necessary distinctions to dispel myths abouthypnosis and separate the hypnotic state from mere suggestion.Barberdemonstrates a combination of sensitivity to human needs along withrigorous scientific grounding. It's fascinating reading, and one of thevery few books that a novice would need to understand the true nature ofhypnosis. ... Product Description
What is hypnosis? Despite widespread misconceptions, hypnosis is not a treatment in itself; instead, it is a facilitator—a useful diagnostic tool that can help the practitioner choose an appropriate treatment modality and accelerate various primary treatment strategies.

The second edition of this remarkable work (first published 25 years ago) is written to provide both beginning and seasoned practitioners with a brief, disciplined technique for mobilizing and learning from an individual's capacity to concentrate. Putting to rest both exaggerated fears about hypnosis and overblown statements of its efficacy, this compelling volume brings scientific discipline to a systematic exploration of the clinical uses and limitations of hypnosis.

The challenge was to develop a clinical measurement that could transform a fascinating amalgam of anecdotes, speculations, clinical intuitions and observations, and laboratory advances into a more fruitful and systematic body of information. Thus was born the authors' Hypnotic Induction Profile (HIP), a crucial 10-minute clinical assessment procedure that relates the spectrum of hypnotizability to personality style, psychopathology, and treatment outcome.

Structured to reflect the flow of a typical evaluation and treatment session and highlighted by case examples throughout, this remarkable synthesis describes how to use the HIP, reviews relevant literature, and details principles and short- and long-term treatment strategies for smoking control; eating disorders; anxiety, concentration, and insomnia; phobias; pain control; psychosomatic disorders and conversion symptoms; trichotillomania; stuttering; and acute and posttraumatic stress disorders and dissociation. Meticulously referenced and indexed, this in-depth work concludes with an appendix on the interpretation and standardization of the HIP.This unique work stands out in the literature because

  • It is written both as an introduction for practitioners new to hypnosis and as an in-depth guide for practitioners with wide experience in hypnosis.
  • Unlike current clinical works, it emphasizes the importance of performing a systematic assessment of hypnotizability to identify, measure, and utilize a given patient's optimal therapeutic potential—a process that, until now, has been relegated to clinical intuition.
  • It describes human behavior phenomenologically as it relates to hypnosis in a probable rather than an absolute fashion.
  • It reviews only specific portions of the literature that are particularly relevant to the important themes presented by the authors. Wherever possible, the authors apply statistical methods to test their hypotheses.

The realm of scientific investigation encompassing hypnosis and psychological dysfunction is comparatively new. This exceptional volume, with its profusion of systematic data, will spark controversy and interest among scientific students of hypnosis everywhere, from psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychoanalysts to physicians, dentists, and other interested clinicians. ... Now in its second edition, Trance & Treatment: Clinical Uses Of Hypnosis discusses the practice of hypnosis as a facilitator and diagnostic tool that psychologists can use in various treatment strategies. Arranged to echo the flow of a standard evaluation and treatment sessions, Trance & Treatment discusses how to use the author's "Hypnotic Induction Profile", a 10-minute clinical assessment procedure that connects hypnotizability to the patient's personality style. Further chapters cover use of hypnosis for smoking control, eating disorders, anxiety, concentration, insomnia, phobias, psychosomatic disorders and much more. An excellent source, drawing heavily upon systemtic data to support its investigation into the beneficial uses of hypnosis in the treatment of psychological dysfunction, and recommended for scientific students of hypnosis, particularly those interested in applying it to mental health practices.
