3-0 out of 5 stars Over the basics
I got this book for a introduction to hypnosis. Honestly compared to some of the books out there this one is well written, but very light in content.

If you wan the absolute basics of hypnosis and its background. Check this book out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise Overview of Hypnosis
This book is not a "how to" manual, but rather a concise overview of many different aspects of hypnosis. It indeed deals with the "essentials" that any practicing hypnotist should know.Even though these are "essentials", they are not covered in any traditional hypnosis training, so anyone attending hypnosis training may benefit from this information.

The information in this book has a wide scope, but it is offered in a concise form - a like a review of essential points.

Some of the areas covered are misconceptions of hypnosis, contexts of hypnosis, human suggestibility, conscious and unconscious processing, susceptibility to hypnosis, physiological and psychological characteristics of hypnotic state, physical and environmental variables for doing hypnosis, structuring suggestions, patterns of hypnotic communication, suggestibility tests, formal hypnotic inductions, naturalistic hypnotic inductions, hypnotic phenomena, self-hypnosis, therapeutic utilization of hypnosis, sample trance scripts, ethical guidelines and much more.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction
This book has "smatterings" of everything - the history of the field, theory, application, and so forth. One could, with this book alone, learn to induce hypnotic trance and apply basic suggestions. (There is *no* one book that will turn somebody into a hypnotherapist.) Dr. Yapko is a leading researcher in the field and his book is at the perfect level for an intelligent, fairly well-educated reader who wishes to learn about this fascinating subject - it's informative without being paternalistic or "talking down."

4-0 out of 5 stars A simple introduction to Clinical Hypnosis
This was the first book I've read on hypnosis.I found it to be very informative as I had not heard of the new contemperary methods of induction. The book is written well and there are a lot of helpful references to relevent work.I liked this book as it was tied together professionally and wasn't just a collection of trance-scripts.

Since I've read this book I have sucessfully hypnotized 3 of 4 attempts. The only thing missing was a pointer to a book that one could use for further self-learing about hypnosis.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very well written
A very scietific view of hypnosis, but, to me, the author didn't really want to prove that hypnosis was real.Still it was informative and entertaining. ... Read more

Product Description
This is a "how to" book intended to increase a person's intuition and extra sensory perception (ESP) or sixth sense. The protocols identified here have been tested and found reliable in increasing a person's intuition or guessing ability by up to 400% above an individuals beginning levels. The book introduces basic information on self-hypnosis as a tool for enhancing our latent human potentials or, as they are referred to in some military literature these days our anomalous human potentials previously called ESP.The book contains basic testing methods both before and after following the techniques described in these pages so a measure of progress can be determined. The approach is simple and effective as a beginning point for those individuals with a true desire to recognize and develop their higher states of awareness. The system uses one's own voice, ideas and thoughts in developing potential and places the seeker in control of their own path to awaking to our higher potentials. ? Enhance individual intuition by up to 400%. ? Create an environment that changes the way we see the world by enhancing our ESP potentials. ? Step into your own possibilities by following a simple set of exercises. ? Stimulate the latent anomalous potentials we all have. This is the introduction into the tools for transformation and the possibilities that ate emerging in this century - the century of the brain. Many scientists believe that the next evolution of human beings will be the awakening to our extrasensory capacities. If this is true it will require a fundamental reordering of the way we see the world and our responsibilities as created human beings. The awakening of our own possibilities is a step in this direction. There are many paths to this knowledge and this book reveals one that can easily be followed by anyone. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
I bought this and was excited to use this, but the suggestions given and examples seem to repeat themselves. There is no prep for the first Hypnosis track so when you do it youre unsure of what to do. And because you only do it once, you wish you can do it over. She seems to talk more about your life and habits in general than she does about your actual weight so it gets hard to stay focused and read on. For the price it is not a terrible buy. I would try it; it may work for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpf, Wonderdul, Amazing tool !
Like some people, I have to lose some weight for looking great and also for having a good health!! I have found this book really by surprise one day on Amazon. I have already read some book about hypnotherapy for losing weight (Paul Mckenna, Marisa Peer...) and I was not impressed. I have to say that I was not disappointed because I didn't give a lot of hope in this kind of book ... BUT that was until I discover Ursula James.

I have read her book for about three weeks from now. I took my time because I read this on my travel for working (about 5 pages per day on my train). Her writing was simple, her words were clear... I was really impressed by how the word went on my mind and deeply in. Her analyze is well done. Unlike any other book about the same subject, she explains how the past, the present, our environnement, our family, our life affect us deeply and allow us to have a poor diet life.

There is three phase on her book:
First one: The Past
Second: The Present
Third: The Future

For each phase, you have to read a track on her CD. She really explains when you have to listen each track. After listen a track, you have to take a day off (no reading further her book). And after that, you go on. Between her phase, she give you some tips, some advice. She tells you to do some "exercise": Like throwing away your old shoes, taking an appointment each week with yourself ...

As for her CD track; her track doesn't contain any music. And as for me, this is perfect. You concentrate on her voice. Her voice is really clear; the ton is perfect, she take time to use every word. This is hypnotic. I have to say, that for her track I don't really remember every thing she said. I am ashamed to say that I feel like I fall asleep. I am deeply focused. What impresses me is that I remember counting from 10 to 1 and after black hole ... and I come back when she counts from 1 to 10 and she ask us to "wake up and open you eyes".

I have listened to all three tracks by now and I have to say that I LOVE THAT. After a long and stressful day, I always feel low. But every time I listened to the CD I feel so refresh. I have so more energy and even my men told me so. I feel like I have spent a whole day in a thalasso or a long night of good sleep.
As for the contain of the CD, like I say, I don't remember. But since I begin to read and listen to the book I didn't crave for bad food, chocolates ... I crave for one thing: GOOD FOOD. It's amazing. I didn't think it but I buy more fruits and more vegetables than before. I also found me wanted to care of myself.

It's amazing because I didn't listen yet her third track twenty one times like she asks. But I feel some improvement in my way to live day to day. She has her great impact on me even if I had to say I didn't really believe in this before. I feel like I have a lot of compliment, good word. I feel positive. I feel like I have less stress which has an impact on me.

About this book, I also love the fact that she didn't give you any diet plan. I remember that in Marisa Peer's book, you have to stop eating carbs and diary. I think this kind of book is a help to lose weight. Of course you have to do something else, but what I really enjoy is that Ursula James helps you on an emotional level, she didn't intend to be a nutritionist and that's great. You don't want to hear, eat that not that! Ursula James helps us to feel less ashamed about our body; she helps us to love it... And love it mean take care of it!! She tell us so much POSITIVE things !!

I will update this book in a few weeks when I will be over the program to see how deeply this had been a helpful tool to lose weight. (I have more that 35 pounds to lose).

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed that CD not included
I bought the Kindle version of this book.I had the crazy notion that the "included CD" would actually be included as maybe an MP3 or Audible file.Guess not!The whole reason I bought the book was because it was accompanied by the CD to help with the self-hypnosis.I think Amazon is really missing the boat if they don't include audio content on Kindle purchases that are included with physical purchases.I won't be making that mistake again!

5-0 out of 5 stars NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD HAPPEN
for a long time i have been trying to loose weight and like many others out there i have tried many diets and excercise..now thanks to this great method of hypnosis i have finally managed to loose 20lbs. all in a month and i am so happy.i have definately changed the way i eat, no more snacks in between meals, drinking 6-8 glasses of water has never been more easy.i feel energetic and i find that i really want to do at least 30min. of exercise a day.i wake up in the morning feeling that every day will be a great day, and it is...best way to loose weight

5-0 out of 5 stars The CD tracks are amazing!
The CD tracks are positive, and help you feel more positive and in control throughout the day.Although I've skipped a few nights of listening to the CD, I am now in a habit of listening to it before going to bed.Ursula's soft voice and pleasant accent relax me so I can sleep well.

I've noticed small changes happening that I didn't intentionally desire... so I cannot help but conclude that her suggestions are working.I particularly like her suggestion that my subconscious find what works for me and then do more of it.I don't have to try one thing after another after another. That alone is a big relief for me!For example I haven't been eating many sweet things.I didn't really notice because I never really wanted them. There are other things I've noticed, too. It's great!

I imagine I'll be listening to this CD long after I lose weight just for the relaxation it offers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Needs a CD version, but VERY good!
I actually bought this kit back in 1996 when it first came out. It influenced me to study hypnosis and self-hypnosis, because it is clear, informative and practical.

The woman's voice on the recording is EXTREMELY soothing. In fact, I did fall asleep the first three times I listened to it. The third time around, I was determined to stay awake and I was delighted by the adventure of drifting into a state of heightened suggestibility and awareness. Success!

The audio is a little off-putting for me now, as I no longer own a cassette player and the product isn't available in CD format. That means I have to find a way to convert the tape into a digital format.

Nonetheless, if it's a powerful introduction to the subject you're after...and some observable benefits, this kit does not disappoint. When listening to the audio, I suggest you do not lie down on a couch or bed. Sit comfortably upright in a chair to avoid the common pitfall.

If nothing else, this kit is a great stress reliever. But the applications go way beyond stress reduction. The book reveals many areas of change and improvement that may be addressed.

Recommended for beginners (who still own a cassette player!)

4-0 out of 5 stars Relaxing therapy
Loved the book. Easy to do and it worked. But did not like the fact that it was on a cassette tape and not a cd.

4-0 out of 5 stars 'The Self-Hypnosis Kit' Book
A very good, if short, book on hypnosis. It doesn't do a great job teaching self-hypnosis, but it's a nice intro to the subjedt in general.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Self-Hypnosis Pit
After visiting a hypnotism expert and awakening with no wallet and a shaved head, I'd thought I'd get a self hypnotism kit to safely practice at home or in a park, for I have an excessive fear of gorillas.

I followed all the instructions, including using Hydrotherapy, which involves using water as a mind relaxant.I used a leaking shower as the counter drips described in the book.I used this in conjunction with the tape, which is narrated by an annoying lady from Shepshire England who sounds like a Celtic witch.

After a few months, I only fell asleep while listening to it because it was so boring.

After a few more months, I finally got myself hypnotized. While under, I don't remember a thing except that it was very dark.

A few days finally passed and I awoke under a tree absent all my clothes and found some banana peels in the vicinity.I don't know what happened but the experience had taught me that self-hypnosis should not be performed by oneself since you can not get yourself out of hypnosis and you may clash with your ego or ID.

I'm still reading up on the subject but am only too glad that I didn't use this while living in a high story building in the city, as I would probably have thrown myself off a ledge while sleep walking.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great starter book for those looking to practice self-hypnosis
I just finished reading this book yesterday and think that if you are interested in learning self-hypnosis (all hypnosis is really self-hypnosis the author's state) then this would be a great book to get started with. I am very new to this skill and am still thinking of just how to incorporate it into my daily life but I did think the authors did a good job of explaining what hypnosis is, and how to achieve it. But the best thing they did with this book was specifically explaining what hypnosis isn't. Like many, I always thought you had no idea what was going on around you when you were in a trance like state. Nothing could be further from the truth. Actually after using the tape that is provided with the book (which is an enormous benefit this kit has over just having a book)I was a little disappointed just how "natural" and "normal" a trance like state is. I guess I was expecting some crazy psychedelic trip or something. But what is really cool is just how natural the changes that you are seeking can come about after being in hypnosis. I have noticed my self-confidence increasing in just a weeks time and I am not so negative about myself or to others.

This is a relatively small book which is good since it gives you the basics of the history of hypnosis and how to use it and can be referred to easily. But I think a second read would be beneficial to the reader since I have read it once but still have some questions about how to achieve the instant self hypnosis that the authors state can be used without the use of a tape or professional hypnotist. All in all the authors are professionals and have done a great service to the art of hypnosis by publishing this kit. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Hypnosis Textbook by Ursula James - an excellent introduction
I really liked this book. It is deceptively simple. If you want to learn how to do hypnosis and add it as a tool for psychotherapy or medicine, this is the book to start with. It takes you through how to deliver hypnosis (with a CD so you can copy the intonation), and explains what is happening at each step of the process. I am really pleased that I got it, and will definitely use it now I have got to grips with the basic techniques. Excellent. Would recommend it to any professional, or anyone with a genuine interest in the real Mcoy!

Product Description
*Includes a do-it-yourself hypnosis CD

Contacting spirit guides is as old as civilization itself. Shamans dating back to at least 50,000 B.C. ritualistically contacted nonphysical entities. The Mystery Schools of Ancient Egypt, Greece, Persia, Rome, and India also dealt with contacting spirit guides.

Every major religion acknowledges the reality of discarnate entities or spirits, whether they are called saints, angels, the Holy Spirit, and so on. One of the purposes of this book is to demystify this process.

The media's depiction of spirit contact has led to the false assumption that anyone who establishes this contact must be in great danger. In reality, this communication is natural, relatively simple and a wonderful growth experience. Spirit communication removes the fear of death and bereavement, and results in a form of spiritual empowerment.

Contacting our spirit guides can help us:
* Develop our intuition and other psychic abilities.
* Increase our ability to love yourself and others.
* Become more aware of the workings of the universe.
* Establish better contact with your own Masters and Guides and Higher Self to facilitate your own spiritual evolution.
* Protect us from negative entities and/or other forces in the universe.
* Access the wisdom of the ancients.
* Establish and maintain your own physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.
* Overcome bad habits and fears.
* Eliminate the fear of death.
* See into the future.
* Master the art of out-of-body experiences.
* Learn our true karmic purpose. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a very good book .
This was the first book I bought about contacting your spirit guide and I was excited. The pro's of this book was the detailed information they gave about the different guides. The cd was a little bit useful...it makes you feel calmer but I was unsuccesful at reaching my guide. The cons of this book is that he has exercises for you to do but he doesn't record the exercise. He expects you to get a tape and record yourself reading the exercise and somehow getting some new age music to play in the background. Would not recomend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Start for Learning Spirit Guide and Self Hypnosis Work
Dr. Goldberg has produced many great works on self hypnosis, my personal favorite being; A Search for Grace, which discusses a client who is proof of reincarnation, which was made into a movie for TV back in the 80's.

Spirit Guide Contact is a great start to learning self hypnosis to contact your spirit guides, ancestors or highly evolved beings, or whatever journey you choose. The cd that comes with this book however, is fairly useless. There are some good scripts in the book so you can make your own guided meditation tape, but, if you want a professionally done guided meditation cd of a Spirit Guide journey, order one from him directly, or other places, such as Dick Sutphen, who also has a good variety of guided meditations.

Those who did not like this book, I am assuming didn't want to do the work involved in creating their own tapes, as this is a book which contains self-hypnosis scripts, which you have to record yourself, perhaps they were thinking, as I mistakenly did, that the cd that comes with the book was a full spirit guide session done by Dr. Goldberg, that it is not.

However that said, if you are interested in creating your own guided meditation tapes to work with the spirit realms, this book will help you do just that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loads of helpful information
This has to be one of the more informative books I've read on the subject of spirit contact ,and it should be really helpful for anyone wishing to further their knowledge on the subject.I have read the other somewhat negative reviews and must admit that if those people who wrote those reviews think they are knowledgable in this area of interest, then they have undoubtably missed the point. Thanks for the fine book Dr Goldberg, your detractors ,may I suggest, should learn to see the good that is in things instead of throwing stones. Peace.

1-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs Down
This book is all over the place with little documentation for asserted theories. I would not waste my time or money on this book. Let's just put it this way, 25 cents in my yard sale is going to be overpricing it.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book and a box of twinkies have a lot in common:fluff

5-0 out of 5 stars With Zarren Hypnosis becomes an easy process
As a G.P., Ifound a lot of ideas in this book. The scripts are clear and easy to use in my office. I have translated and integrated the "smoking cessation programm" in my daily practice. I am waiting for a second book by Zarren in which he would approach more somatic problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rapid Change Can Happen
This is THE handbook for integrating Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Brief Therapy, and Hypnosis into a highly effective model for beginning and experienced therapists.
As a psychologist with 25 years of experience and some training with Dr. Milton Erickson I can still learn from the clever and expert "reframing" and protocols offered by these two distinguished clinicans.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning how to change dysfunctional habits.

5-0 out of 5 stars Author's Review
We wrote this book for therapists and other health professionals who are either new to the use of hypnosis as a clinical tool or who have experience with hypnosis and want to refine their skills. It is based on over forty years of the clinical experience of the senior author, Jordan I. Zarren, M.S.W., DAHB, and over twenty years of the clinical experience of the second author, Bruce N. Eimer, Ph.D., ABPP.

Our book teaches basic prnciples for inducing waking hypnosis and hynotic trance. We explain how hypnosis can enhance therapeutic communication and therapy outcomes. We explain the basics of effective hypnotic suggestion and provide numerous scripts containing explicit verbalizations of suggestions and treatment strategies for a wide range of psychological and medical problems (e.g., anxiety disorders, harmful habits, depression, chronic anger, problem drinking and eating, chronic pain, preparation for surgery).A whole section is devoted to Jordan Zarren's highly effective, original one-visit approach for helping people stop smoking.

Hypnosis can be used to shorten treatment time and improve the effectiveness of other interventions. It is very applicable for psychotherapists of any orientation, as well as for psychologists, physicians, dentists, nurses, psychiatrists, mental health and substance abuse counselors, clinical social workers, and pastoral counselors.

Our book will help you as a health clinician, change what you do so that your work is more effective and satisfying, or it will help you to continue to do what you are doing better.

If you are a seriously curious layperson who is interested in learning more about hypnosis and dispelling many of the myths and misconceptions surrounding hypnosis, or if you are considering seeking the services of a qualified hypnosis clinician, this book will be very informative, useful and helpful.

Editorial Review

Product Description
Hypnosis has long been an important tool to therapists working across a broad spectrum of disciplines and specialties. Self-hypnosis, on the other hand, is less well understood, and has been used by only a limited number of psychotherapists over the years. This book is the first of its kind to explore what self-hypnosis is, what it can do for us, how to do it, and the ultimate effects of self-hypnosis. Starting with a background and history of hypnosis, this book breaks down the process of hypnosis into its basic parts, then offers step-by-step instructions for practicing self-hypnosis. In the final section of the book, specific self-hypnosis techniques are offered to solve specific problems, such as conquering fears, reducing stress, or quitting smoking.

"Self hypnosis is an art of inner communication that can be used for many purposes," write the authors in the introduction. This book dynamically explores how inner-communication can totally transform us-from how we react to specific stimuli to how we think and the choices we make. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, thought provoking book
First, I agree with the reviewers about this not being a beginner's book. You would probably get more out of reading a different hypontism book first.

NLP is a somewhat controversial approach to hypnotherapy. The version presented in this book is not really a science so much as an art, which requires deep personal experience and understanding to make work. For this reason it will always be on the fringes of psychotherapy. This book is one of the classic books about NLP and therefore should be read critically by anyone interested in it or related topics (including how the brain processes language).

I found the book to crystalize what I had learned from life experience and by watching others.Given that experience I think I got a lot out of the book, perhaps more than the authors intended. However I can understand how others might take wrong turns trying to see this as some sort of short-cut (when it is really a power tool).Having said this, I think if folks read the book critically, it will lead to greater insight.

I wasn't sure about all aspects of the book. For example, while I understand the idea of symptom substitution as a possible good, I found the examples in the book to be questionable in the long run (while they might be good for transitional measures, they seem to help rob an individual of the need to address some circumstances directly).

All in all, though, a very thought-provoking book and worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for!
I did some NLP Practitioner training hosted by the ubiquitous Paul McKennna, Michael Breen, and the legend Richard Bandler himself many years ago.We were given workbooks, but nothing really compares to the information they imparted verbally, and given the seminar format there was a lot of that.Though this book isn't a transcript of that particular course much of the content of it is covered in this book, along with much more. This is a riveting and insightful read, and I was very happy to discover this rare book and it's one I don't think I'll be lending to a soul!Bandler and Grinder are geniuses of language, and what is great about this book is it feels like they are almost 'talking to you' given it's transcript nature.I also love the natural infusions of humour - Bandler is a very compelling (and funny) man, which is something I can say having met him personally.Perhaps one good thing would have been some indication of who was speaking at various times, as the seminar was given by both Bandler and John Grinder, NLP's co-founders.That said, not knowing who is speaking doesn't in any way detract from the experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
This is one little book that helps create great hypnotists.Very easy to understand and is a fun read at the same time.Out of print but worth every cent you will spend on it. Written, of course, as only Richard can write with instruction and great humor. Learn from one of the original tranceweavers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Unreadable
Okay, I know Bandler and Grinder are the originators of NLP, but they can't write readable copy to save their lives. Unless you are a true NLP geek, don't waste your money on this unless you want to spend your time scratching your head saying "Is there something I'm missing here?" There are NLP books that are practical and helpful and can even be used by therapists. This is not one of them. I'm sure in person their classes are excellent and I am grateful for their contribution, but not for this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING CLASSIC!
Most people do not realize that the contents of this book were taken from transcripts of several live seminars on "Ericksonian-style" indirect Hypnosis conducted by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. The book reads as though you are sitting in the front row and witnessing Bandler and Grinder reveal to you exactly how to do indirect hypnosis, complete with demonstrations of each technique.Since they have not taught together in many years, this is as close to attending a live Bandler and Grinder training as you will come. This book is loaded with insights, tips, techniques - and a great deal of CLEAR and STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTION.If you want to learn HOW TO DO indirect hypnosis, you are going to get a great deal out of this book.It is a MASTERPIECE taught by two brilliant hypnotists and trainers who are legends in the fields of NLP and Hypnosis.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Best of the 4-Volume Set but....
This is the best starting book for anyone who wants to delve into hypnosis. But it is often available as used book only and is the first in a 4-vol set. But soon (sometime in early 2006), there will be a 8-vol (yes, 8 books in a set) set in a single CD that also comes with audio and bonus video and at $75!

Back about this book... It tells you experiments and findings of tests conducted on hypnotized subjects and how they react to suggestions by the "hypnotizer" and also what happens when they are told to do things (while in trance) that they would not do in normal consciousness.

The sections on Trance and Suggestions are excellent; perhaps the best OVERVIEW of trance and how suggestions work.

Much of the material is suitable for a hypnotherapist to use in a pre-talk to trance induction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent book
You must read it if you want to know a little about the hypnosis realities. I am sure you will be surprised about what you will learn in this book

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent book
This is a excelent book for those ones that want to know some deep knowledge about hypnosis.
With this book you are not going to learn how to do hypnosis, but you will understand some of the presupositions that are known in hypnosis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential
This book is a great choice. It is perhaps the best of the four volume set. Gives an excellent overview of Erickson's approach to hypnosis. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of Mind Expanding Techniques
I bought the book years ago and read it three times. It is a very good overview of the subjects.
The part I like the most is the Self-hynosis part. I have been following the recipes to make my own self-hypnosis tapes over the years. I have had only excellent results.
If record one tape a year (more or less), to accomplish different results, and I use them often until I reach my goals.
I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to reprogram some undesirable patterns of behavior. ... Read more
