Product Description

After a decade and a half of decentralization reforms in post-communist states, we still know very little about their impact on local populations. This study, which examines local social services and economic promotion in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Russia, fills this important gap. The book dispels the myth that socio-economic 'givens' or inter-governmental systems are key determinants of local development. Party political factors and local civic activism can and do make a difference, and should be given greater prominence in the literature on local performance.

Product Description

How do parties adopt and change positions on the European question? How do they balance the demands placed upon them by ideology, voters and participation in coalition government? What are the sources of Euroskepticism, and how widespread is it among the parties and the public? This book addresses these questions by examining the politics of Hungary’s accession to the European Union, from the early 1990s to 2004. The book provides a conceptually grounded yet accessible analysis of the way questions related to EU membership, and European integration in general, are channelled into political life.  Starting with a comparative exploration of the impact of European integration on party politics in Western and Eastern Europe, the book goes on to review the Hungarian political parties’ history, ideological profiles, electoral competition and coalition-building in government and opposition, as well as the dynamics of public opinion. It will be of interest to academics concerned with the contestation of European integration in EU member states, and specifically with party politics in Central and Eastern European.

From the supplier: Tibor Soos, secretary general of the Hungarian Parliament, solicited the help of US legislators to strengthen the political situation in his country which has witnessed drastic government changes since its transition to democracy in 1985. The country's first free elections after more than 40 years was disorganized and was not conducted on objective lines. Although congressional financial assistance aided the establishment of a sound infrastructure, efficient state legislatures are necessary to ensure its proper functioning.

Excerpt: György Lukács (Hungarian pronunciation: ; April 13, 1885 June 4, 1971) was a Hungarian Marxist philosopher and literary critic. He is a founder of the tradition of Western Marxism. He contributed the ideas of reification and class consciousness to Marxist philosophy and theory, and his literary criticism was influential in thinking about realism and about the novel as a literary genre. He served briefly as Hungary's Minister of Culture following the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. Lukács's full name, in German, was Georg Bernhard Lukács von Szegedin, and in Hungarian was Szegedi Lukács György Bernát; he published under the names Georg or György Lukács. (Lukács is pronounced by most English speakers, the original pronunciation being IPA: .) He was born Löwinger György Bernát to a wealthy Jewish family in Budapest. His father was József Löwinger (later Szegedi Lukács József; 1855, Szeged 1928), an investment banker, his mother was Adele Wertheimer (Wertheimer Adél; 1860, Budapest 1917). Lukács studied at the universities of Budapest and Berlin, receiving his Ph.D. in 1906. While attending grammar school and university in Budapest, Lukács's membership of various socialist circles brought him into contact with the anarcho-syndicalist Ervin Szabó, who in turn introduced him to the works of Georges Sorel. Lukács's outlook during this period was modernist and anti-positivist. From 1904 to 1908, he was involved in a theatrical group that produced plays by dramatists such as Henrik Ibsen, August Strindberg and Gerhart Hauptmann. Lukács spent much time in Germany: he studied in Berlin in 1906 and again in 1909-10, where he made the acquaintance of Georg Simmel, and in Heidelberg in 1913, where he became...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=310872 ... Editorial Review

Product Description
In this important historical account of the role that religion played in defining the political life of a modern national society, Paul A. Hanebrink shows how Hungarian nationalists redefined Hungary-a liberal society in the nineteenth century-as a narrowly "Christian" nation in the aftermath of the First World War. Drawing on impressive archival research, Hanebrink uncovers how political and religious leaders demanded that "Christian values" influence public life while insisting that religion should never be reduced to the status of a simple nationalist symbol.

In Defense of Christian Hungary also explores the emergence of the idea that a destructive "Jewish spirit" was the national enemy. In combining the historical study of antisemitism with more recent considerations of religion and nationalism, Hanebrink addresses an important question in Central European historiography: how nations that had been inclusive of Jews before World War I became rabidly antisemitic during the interwar period. As he traces the crucial and complex legacy of religion's role in shaping exclusionary antisemitic politics in Hungary, Hanebrink follows the process from its origins in the 1890s to the Holocaust and beyond.

More broadly, In Defense of Christian Hungary squarely addresses the relationship between antisemitic words and antisemitic violence and between religion and racial politics, deeply contested issues in the history of twentieth-century Europe. The Hungarian example is a chilling demonstration of how religious nationalism can find a home even within a pluralist and tolerant civil society. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Politics & Religion
I read this book purely to pick up historical facts about the holocaust in Hungary. I must say I learned a lot about the role of the churches and their influence, however indirect, on the course of wartime events. Parts of the book are easy reading while other sections require a bit of a slog to get through, but all in all it was worth it to me. My knowledge of events in Hungary has been added to quite effectively from a little known perspective. I gave it 3 stars because it is hard to digest in places. Information good, writing style fair only. ... Read more
