Despite severe diabetes, Russell Ogg was a successful photographer who traveled worldwide with his wife, journalist Norma Lee Browning. He's always been able to cope with anything, but when diabetes began to rob him of his sight, "it was like a violinist losing his fingers."

When Norma Lee saw him sitting day after day on the patio of their home in Palm Springs, slumped in despair, his sightless eyes fixed on nothing, she too became depressed.But a miracle was about to happen.

Then suddenly a red hummingbird appeared that changed their lives.

Norma Lee frankly describes her doubts and the errors she made in identifying the birds her husband tried to photograph. She also concludes, from her close observation of the hummers, that "the experts" are wrong on many counts.

But the miracle that provides the heart-warming conclusion to this unusual story involves Russell Ogg's eyesight. His sight improved. His eye doctor said he saw better than it was possible for him to see. "There is no way to explain medically how he does it .. his photographs tell us something about the magnificence of man."

His inspiring story is a testament to human courage and hope.

Beauty through the eyes of a blind photographer
An amazing book of photographs "taken" by a blind photographer, this is the story ofingenuity and triumph over blindness. Russell Orgg, a Palm Springs CA photographer managed to innovate a system causing the birds to snap pictures (creations, really) of themselves. The story is inspiring and the photographs breathtaking.

He Saw a Hummingbird
This is one of the most inspirational and heartwarming stories I have read in a long time.I highly recommend it to anyone who is experiencing difficulties physically and emotionally as it is uplifting and such an encouragement!Russell's ability to overcome this tremendously difficult period in his life is remarkable.I only wish there was a sequel to the book as I would love to know more about his photography and the aftermath of his success.The book is a light hearted approach to a most serious situation allowing the reader to appreciate and value man's will to survive.The author, his wife, has a wonderful sense of humor and evoked curiousity and wonder for the tiniest of birds... the hummingbird! If you want to know more about hummingbirds, this is the book to get. The author clearly knows what she is talking about and her love for these tiny birds shows in every page. We learned a lot and highly recommend this book. Arrived quickly and in good condition

Informative and entertaining read
This little book is wonderfully written and covers all aspects of the ruby throated hummingbird. The distinct characteristics of the hummingbird - their size, description (differences between the male and female), courtship, flight, sounds are covered in detail. Most interesting are chapters that cover an average day in the life of the male hummingbird and the nesting habits of the female (the author describes her own month long observation of one in a park near her home). "The Little Hummingbird" is a magnificent Haida-Manga children's work based on "Flight of the Hummingbird," a tale based on a South American indigenous story about the heroic efforts of a tiny hummingbird to carry drops of water to end a forest fire. The vivid, spare, three-color (black, white and red) Haida-style illustrations are stunning, carrying the storytelling to new, multi-mythic impact levels. Hummingbird is observed and approached by many of the larger animals of the forest, who wonder why she is carrying single drops of water in her beak to fight an enormous forest fire. When asked what she is doing, Hummingbird responds, "I'm doing everything I can." Hummingbirds!
"A Hummingbird's Life," written and illustrated by John Himmelman, is an excellent educational book for young readers. The book is an introduction to the life cycle of the ruby-throated hummingbird. Nearly every page contains a beautiful full-color illustration, along with simple text.

Himmelman shows us hummingbirds hatching from their eggs and learning to fly. He then follows a hummingbird on his migration south, and shows us the "dance" with which the male hummingbird seeks to attract a mate. Many other aspects of hummingbirds' lives are also portrayed. The book contains moments of both humor and suspense, and ultimately celebrates the beauty and resilience of these amazing creatures.

The book's educational value is enhanced by a short but useful glossary. Himmelman clearly has both a knowledge of and affection for hummingbirds, and both of these things come through in this wonderful book. ... Read more

Hummingbirds : My Winter Guests is a wonderful little book.It is rare to have the opportunity to view hummingbirds so closely over a long period of time.The author conveys the personality of each of her little guests, andeducates you about them without reading like a textbook.I fell in lovewith each of her guests, and was sad as each of them left.My onlycriticism is that she never finished the story of Peeper.She said thatall of her guests eventually left and described each one's leaving,Peeper's healing and leave-taking were not addressed.Since he became myfavorite, I still want to know more of what happened to him. I nice little book that reminds up of our responsibilities
This is a very nice, but little, book that tells a short parable about the flight of a humingbird that saves a forest. It is well written and illustrated by Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas. Though the main story is a short four pages, it delivers it message effectively and succinctly. The added value with this book is the Forward by Nobel Peace Price winner Wangari Maathai, the Kenyan woman known for her work planting trees in Africa, and an afterword by the Dalai Lama.

Again, this is a short book, but it is a nice little package of important, though-provoking words. It would make a great gift for the environmentally enlightened as well as the environmentally challenged.

Good Story, maybe 4 pages long
This is a very nice little story, just know that the story itself is only a few pages long, and the rest of the book is a comentary of sorts.
It's something that could be sent around for it's message much easier via email.Very short story!

Learning from the smallest
The smallest of the birds, the hummingbird, shows the rest of the jungle how to turn a tragic forest fire into an act of salvation. When a huge fire starts to devastate the animal's habitat all but the humingbird flee to a safer spot to watch their home be destroyed. With great speed and determination the hummingbird takes one drop of water after another to attempt to douse the flames. As the parable ends the Big Bear asks the hummingbird, "What are you doing?" Where the hummingbird responds, "I am doing what I can."

This book shows in strong graphics by Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas, wisdom from the Dalai Lama, and experience from 2004 Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Wangari Maathai what can happen when the smallest or weakest are motivated into action.

The parable, The Flight of the Hummingbird, is perfect for children because it shows how the smallest with determination can outperform the strongest with none. The book also tells the story of Wangarie Maathai, a modern day Johnny Appleseed, who started the Green Belt Movement in Kenya that has planted over 30-million trees.

World-shattering and Beautiful
I LOVE this book. I could not put it down. I've already given two copies as gifts, and I'm sure I will give more.

A Raw Hummingbird is heartbreaking, compelling, thought-provoking, and wise. It's not for the faint of heart, but it spoke deeply to me. Not only are many of the events in the author's life tragic, but it's also excruciating to be inside the mind of a teenage girl, and not be able to influence or help her..

However, A Raw Hummingbird is on my list of favorites, and I'm eagerly waiting for the second book to come out!!

And yes, I will give the delicious details even though I’m probably the only one who will ever read this memoir. Uh oh. Sounds like he might be waking up.
Looks over shoulder to where Liam’s still sleeping in bed. Sigh of relief that eyes are closed, mind is oblivious to what lover-sidekick is doing behind his back.
Liam would be pissed if he thought I was writing about him and not keeping my daily log of our exploits for the Agency. Uh oh, the sheet has slipped down, giving me a full view of his perfect hard ass. Stirrings of a raging hard-on in sidekick. If Liam weren’t so exhausted from saving the world, I’d slip right back in with him and… sigh as forces self back to writing.
I guess you could say my complete body—soul devotion to him is because I burn for him through and through. Who wouldn’t after eight years of working together—and well…relaxing too…night and day? And after what he did for me. But I’m getting ahead of myself. In order to convey the fullness of my feelings for him, I’ll have to start at the beginning of our…ahem…association.
