5-0 out of 5 stars We loved this!
We used Head to Toe Science for our 3rd grade human body studies combined with Easy Make and Learn Projects: Human Body by Donald Silver and Patricia Wynne and had a BLAST!

Head to Toe Science provides the necessary information and vocabulary with easy to do experiments. Home Training Tools sells the book with a supply kit for [...] if you want, we just bought a stethoscope and were fine.

Everything was very clearly explained, we loved the depth (it was just right, not too light not too heavy) and experiments illustrated the concepts very well. I would use this with 2nd-5th graders. We covered one chapter a week, doing science everyday so in 11 weeks, we covered the human body but it can be stretched out for longer, especially with reading other books.

We will use this book again in 2nd grade with our youngest son. Thank you Jim Wiese for providing such an excellent resource for human body!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Find!!
I am teaching a unit on the body and found this book to be most helpful and informative. My class thoroughly enjoyed the experiments as well. I will be using it for years to come with my students! Great find!

Product Description

Richard P. McCall's fascinating book explains how basic concepts of physics apply to the fundamental activities and responses of the human body, a veritable physics laboratory.

Blood pumping through our veins is a vital example of Poiseuille flow; the act of running requires friction to propel the runner forward; and the quality of our eyesight demonstrates how properties of light enable us to correct near- and far-sightedness.

Each chapter discusses a fundamental physics concept and relates it to the anatomy and physiology of applicable parts of the body. Topics include motion, fluids and pressure, temperature and heat, speech and hearing, electrical behaviors, optics, biological effects of radiation, and drug concentrations. Clear and compelling, with a limited amount of math, McCall's descriptions allow readers of all levels to appreciate the physics of the human physique.

Physics of the Human Body will help curious high school students, undergraduates with medical aspirations, and practicing medical professionals understand more about the underlying physics principles of the human body.

5-0 out of 5 stars A choice addition to any biological science collection
The human body is so complex with so many different systems, that it still inspires wonder even in today's scientists. "Physics of the Human Body" discusses the science of the physics behind the human body, and does not just focus on the exterior gross motor skills of movement and muscles. Everything from the movement of blood through the circulatory system to how our bodies maintain their heat, "Physics of the Human Body" is a fascinating and very highly recommended read, a choice addition to any biological science collection.

Product Description

One hundred trillion cells, more than 600 muscles, and over 200 bones—these are parts of the twelve major systems that make up the human body. Technological developments have given us a detailed glimpse within our bodies and led to a greater understanding of how we function. Starting with the integumentary system (that's your skin, nails, and hair) and finishing with the reproductive system, the human body covers everything about you—from the outside to the inside. Award-winning science writer Seymour Simon has teamed up with the Smithsonian Institution on this new book about the greatest wonder of the world: the human body.

4-0 out of 5 stars About the human body....
Reviewed by Evan Weldon (age 6) for Reader Views (9/08)

"The Human Body" by Seymour Simon is about how the body works. There was some really good information in the book, but the best part was definitely the pictures.

There are pictures on pretty much every page. There is a neat colored x-ray of the skull. There is a 2-page drawing of a see-through body where you can see all the blood vessels and organs. There is a colored microscope image of the skin. The picture makes the skin look so flakey but our skin really feels so smooth. There is a super close-up of hair on someone's upper lip.The hairs look more like trees than hairs. There are pictures of bone, muscles, lungs, hearts, blood cells, the trachea, bronchia, intestines, neurons, the brain, white blood cells attacking a virus, kidney, lymph glands, a super close-up of an egg being fertilized by a sperm, an embryo, DNA, chromosomes, rod and cone cells of the eye, a cross-section of the face, and the tongue.

I found some of the reading part a little bit boring (but my mom thought it was interesting), but I really liked looking at the pictures. There were some pretty big words in this book.I think lots of people would enjoy "The Human Body" by Seymour Simon, even grown-ups.

5-0 out of 5 stars An educational children's book packed with information about the marvels of the human body
The Human Body is an educational children's book packed with information about the marvels of the human body. Colorful photographs, many of which are extensively magnified, illustrate the informative text about the roles that blood cells, skin, bones, muscles, chromosomes and more play to keep the body going, as well as how humans develop from a fertilized egg that grows into an embryo and later a baby. Intended for young readers ages 5-9, The Human Body is a worthy addition to children's public and private library collections, and highly recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Introductory Text for General Education
Q> How do you get non-majors interested in biology?
A> Talk about something that's interesting and relevant to them.
This is why we decided to start a Human Health and Disease course for non-biology / non-health science majors. Our philosophy was to lay down the minimum foundation that enabled students to understand most diseases. The problem is finding a text book to support such a course. That's why I'm really grateful to have this text book. I reviewed a dozen others before this and was looking at having to develop my own.
However, it's not perfect. It could be more balanced. For example, why does a student at this level need to know the bones of the skull?I'd also like to have a lab book to go with it, preferrably one that taught some of the concepts in that setting to make lecture less intense for non-majors. Still, developing a lab text for to go with this product is a lot less than I was looking at before, so - Thanks! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute game, helps kids learn their anatomy while fighting boredom!
This is a neat little game, and can be adapted to just flashcard style learning for little kids without the patience for an actual card game. Each card has a picture of an organ with a little tidbit of information about that specific part. But the anatomy drawn isn't 100% correct (the colon is reversed in their pictures...), but it still gives kids an idea of what goes on in their little bodies.I personally think educational games need to be correct in what they are showing and teaching (as does my physician husband) -- but maybe we are being too picky!I would have given it all the stars in the rating had it not been for this mistake in their drawings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun at the beach or in the car

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Anatomy book
This Anatomy book really helped me understand exactly how even the smallest parts of the human body look. I am studying speech therapy, so to be able to see an actual larynx was very beneficial to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gold standard for learning anatomy but for serious students of anatomy you need Acland Anatomy DVD
Rohen and Netter are great at showing you the anatomical parts in a 2 dimensional style, but using these great atlases with Acland DVDs will aid in efficiently learning anatomy in a way that you would barely need the help of the instructors.Acland DVDs have the advantage of dissecting the structures from start to finish and then showing you how all of it functions as a whole to the physiology of the body.I used Netter's, Rohen and Acland DVDs to for my anatomy class and it increased my efficiency of learning by ten fold.

5-0 out of 5 stars I've looked at them all and this one is really helpful
I'll keep this short and sweet. To get through gross anatomy (with cadaver lab) I use Netter's and this.Period.Sure the dissections are perfect, unlike mine, but the photos are amazing, well labeled and highly detailed. There are coronal/longitudinal sections, MRI/CT scans, and a few schematic drawings as well.We have every major atlas and dissection guide you can imagine in our lab and I took the time to look at them all and compare. This is a great resource, it's not that large and the hardcover will ensure it lasts at least throughout your academic career. Also - I got a great price and quick delivery through Amazon.I joined Amazon student which I had only heard of recently and enjoyed free expedited shipping.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for cadaver lab!
I don't know how I would have gotten through my cadaver lab without this book. We are tested on cadavers (not pictures) and this was a great way to fuse the information gained from drawn pictures and actual cadavers. I would definitely recommend this to anyone taking anatomy lab.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Atlas for Cadaver Labs

Product Description
From the first unicellular life on Earth, living things have had thecapacity to sense heat and cold and to avoid extreme temperatures. Withthe development of a bigger brain and a constant body temperature, mammals were able to change their habitats. The interplay betweenbehavior, body temperature, and ambient temperature may have played acrucial role in human evolution. In this book Carl Gisolfi and FranciscoMora tell the evolutionary story of the brain and thermoregulation, withan emphasis on modern humans.

The book first traces the story of the brain throughout evolution andshows how the control of body temperature as a survival mechanism wasachieved. It then goes on to discuss the mechanisms of our environmentalindependence, why a body temperature of 37° C (only five degreesfrom death) is essential for humans and how this narrow temperaturerange is defended. It describes how we cope with environmental extremes, the function of fevers, and why thermoregulation is best understoodthrough a combination of physiological and cognitive approaches. It alsoaddresses such questions as "Can we cool the brain?" and "Is theelevation in brain temperature (a hot brain) the reason we stopexercising?" ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Medical Atlas
This book delivers just what is promised.Stunning photographs of the human body.It was a gift for someone who is vitally interested in the anatomy and physiology of humans and was a huge success.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anatomy Meets Technology in a Most Fascinating Way
I own the paperback version of this book, and it is a wealth of anatomical information. First of all, I can tell all of my friends that I have a dead body in my library. But aside from the obvious humor I can get from owning this book, this is a truly wonderful work of computer and photographic technology. To have a visual reference of an entire human body is not only informative and fascinating, but useful for medical students, writers, forensic specialists, or just the plain curious.

The book details an entire human body in a series of 1-mm thick slices from head to toe. There are three distinct views: Transverse, or a horizontal slice; Coronal, or a vertical slice from side-to-side; And Sagittal, or a vertical slice front-to-back. Each left-hand page features a close-up of a featured slice and a legend indicating where on the body the slice is located, and each right-hand page features 12 slices in smaller photos, each numbered in sequence so you can follow the path of organs and other bodily features.

Without this book, the only way you could find something more like a cadaver is in the local morgue. I recommend this book highly. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Review
Ordered this product from an Amazon representative. It took almost 2 full weeks to recieve it with the express shipping. This was highly unacceptable for a company as large as Amazon. When I finally recieved the product, the disk was sent in a flimsy mail sleeve and was damaged to the point that it could not be used. There was a crack in the disk that was clearly there before it was shipped and they tried to pull a fast one thinking it would not be noticed.Very disappointed with this transaction as I have ordered from Amazon before and had no problems then. Was forced to send this product back for refund and will not reorder from them!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great tool for visual learners
This DVD helped me better understand what I was reading in my A&P textbook. For some of the more difficult topics (like action potentials in the nervous system and cardiac conduction), it doesn't matter how many times you read about it, you need to see it in action in order to truly grasp what is going on physiologically. The animations do just that. For people who are more visual learners, this DVD is a great tool.

Each animation also has an accompanying audio track that describes what is being displayed on the screen.(Good for aural learners.)Combined, these tools are extremely useful for remembering the steps of the body's different processes (in exact order) when it comes to exam time.Another feature of this DVD that is good for test review are the interactive games and exercises.

There are two reasons why I am not giving it 5 stars, the first being the navigation. At the end of each animation, it tells you to click on a certain body part or drawing label in order to continue. It sometimes takes a while to find out where you need to click, and even then the "hot spots" are not very big so you have to look for the hand icon to know EXACTLY where to click.I would rather have a "NEXT" button that is always displayed on the same place on the screen.(However, I think I remember reading that in version 2.0, navigation was improved so maybe this annoyance has been fixed.)

The 2nd reason I cannot give it 5 stars is due to the price.$290.00!! Holy Moley!(That is about twice as much as my anatomy tetbook!)I luckily purchased this DVD at my college bookstore at a greatly reduced price - one of the DVD authors is an Anatomy professor at my school. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Colorful and Interesting
My kids thoroughly enjoy this book. It's so colorful and full of facts on the human body. The pictures in this book are very descriptive and informative. We use this for our homeschooling curriculum and it makes a wonderful supplement as we are learning about the human body this year. The kids really love reading it.

4-0 out of 5 stars They Love It!
My children (2 and 3) love this book! They ask me to read it over and over! Much of it is over their heads, but they learn a little more each time they read through it! It does have some bare basics on reproduction (no pictures of parts or anything), so if you're not ready for your little one to learn about sperm and eggs, you may not want to give them free access to this book. (Though my 2 and 3 year old only focus on the fetal pictures on those pages.)
The only reason I give the book 4 stars, instead of 5, is that it is often disjointed. It will start naming the muscles with technical terms (biceps, triceps, deltoid) and then suddenly name some a "kiddy" name (calf muscle, stomach muscles). I wish it gave all the technical names, instead of going half and half.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous resource!
We homeschool our three children and this is one of the books we are using for science for our 3rd grade twins. In addition to the beautiful pictures, I love that there are links on the website to print the diagrams. To help my kids process the information, I print up the pictures, as well as typing out the supporting information. When I type it out, I leave out some main words and the kids fill in the blanks. We then cut out the pictures and the blurbs of information and glue them onto 3-hole punched paper. I often omit the same word from several of the blurbs and these words also become spelling words. The repetition is useful both for science and writing.

The Rock-n-Learn Human Body DVD is a GREAT supplement to this book!! Between the two, the information practically teaches itself!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very educational
I bought this for my daughter who is in kindergarten and loves science. We read a chapter every night and she loves it. It is educational for her, and we learn a lot, too.One warning, though. There is a chapter on reproduction. It doesn't get too specific but it did prompt A LOT of questions from my daughter. "But how do the sperm get to the egg?" So, be prepared! All in all, a great, informative book that she can continue learning from for many years.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is a great encyclopedia on the body for kids
My three year old has shown an interest in bones so I found this book. I am so glad I did, it's a wonderful books. It covers many topics, has great photos, detailed illustrations, tons of information presented in a kid-friendly manner. Plus it provides lots of links to internet sites to find even more information. It has a great format and is enjoyed by my son a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book for Elementary Aged Children
In the process of completing my degree in biochemistry, I took various biology, anatomy, and physiology classes and purchased the requisite textbooks for hundreds of dollars.I now teach upper elementary students in a Montessori school.I can use the college textbooks for occasional reference or specific research with the students, but when I need to present an impressionistic lesson or just tell about the human body, this book is the one I go to.It presents the body like a story with simple, clear, beautiful illustrations inspired by the likes of Leonardo Da Vinci. If you are a Montessorian (or any teacher for that matter) looking for a simple, concise reference to supplement lessons on the human body, I would look no further. My co-teacher has used this book for years and has thankfully shared it with me.Get it if you ever find it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Facts Presented Well
I used this book as a starting point to teach my 10-year-old son the facts of life. All of the chapters are well done, and the section on the reproductive system has wonderful descriptions and art, without any of thecorniness you find in some books.Great if you like the scientificapproach! ...
