5-0 out of 5 stars book
I purchased book knowing it had been used and highlighted, and found that with it being highlighted, it is easier for me to study from and grasp the most important concepts out of it. It arrived on time, and matched description when purchasing, WIll be purchasing from here again in future

3-0 out of 5 stars 3-1/2 Stars?
I just completed an A&P class using this book.I think this book is a nightmare for an attention-deficit person. The pages are incredibly "busy" and it is hard to focus on the concepts being presented. On the other hand, the illustrations and charts are good and helpful (maybe they just need a visually better layout).I found myself having to read, re-read, and map out the information myself differently because for me it was not presented in a clear way.

The CD rom that comes with this is helpful to quiz yourself. The student workbook is tedious in that it simply reprints all the diagrams in the book and has you color and label them. After I did the first chapter I was thoroughly fed up with it.Labeling:helpful.Coloring for 2 hours:not helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Memmler's- The structure and function of the human body
I liked this book but the newest edition has more illustrations and examples..But still, it's a good acquisition and for the price it is very well paid. Worth it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok
In all honesty I'm just not that impressed with this book. It is required text for one of my classes and I will use it in 2 others as well. It's just not very engaging to me.

Product Description

From single-celled embryo to fully grown human, Dr. Betts charts the major systems of the body, its interrelated organs and the revelations of microbiology. Find out why you couldn’t live without bacteria or cholesterol; how your kidneys and lungs are mirror images of each other; and why you are a mix of your grandparents but only a meeting of your parents. Illustrated with rare historical engravings and beautiful contemporary drawings, The Human Body charms and informs as it reveals how the most complex organism in the world fits together.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful and beautiful book
This is the most beautiful book I have yet seen on the Human Body, and it's tiny!It was reviewed as follows in THE LANCET, the top British medical journal, in Aug 04:"The renaissance of anatomy heralded by Vesalius in 1543, and the physiological discoveries of the ensuing centuries, "has exploded us into innumerable bits, mostly studied in dead humans or half-dead furry mammals, a far cry from a whole". So writes Moff Betts, a Welsh doctor, in the first of nearly 30 short and witty passages accompanied by beautiful woodcuts in this pocket-sized gift book. Descriptions of DNA, the cell, embryology, and the heart are curi-ously interspersed with the ancient humours, the odd numerology of bodily proportions, and eastern systems of chakras and kundalini. Betts fosters a sense of overall connectedness despite chasms of scale and religion. I felt I was reading a distillation of ancient alchemical tomes, a 19th-century Matt Ridley, or perhaps even Paracelsus for Dummies, and while the text is beguilingly simple, it is neither dumbed down nor stripped of scientific vocabulary. The descriptions are rich and artful, and typically within a stone's throw of modern scientific understanding. An example: "the thymus shrinks after your first birthday, and by dotage it has all but been replaced by fat cells. So as the years roll by, the school of discrimination between self and nonself gradually fades, a thymic idea of what one life is." If some chapters reach too far into cleverness, or fail to escape the necessary triteness of explaining molecular biology in a page, these sins are forgivable. Betts delights in connections between the molecular and the cosmic, conveying a sense of mystery and a love of his subject. One chapter ends: "the cockles of your heart are warmth-sensitive organelles whose anatomical location has yet to be discovered." Feel your chest as you finish reading this book-there they are.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Special
Nothing special about this book. Just your typical run of the mill anatomy textbook. Buy something else or a physiology textbook if it is cheaper.

4-0 out of 5 stars anantomy -smatormy
it's req. reading. it seems like a good book as far as texts go, but the teacher still shows us slides from other sources and makes comments that lead me to be that the book isn't as comprehensive as it could be.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent drawings of body structures
Book is very good at keeping "fluff" material to a minimum. The drawings are wonderful (better than the actual anatomy dummies). It is hard material so I would get text early and pre-read as much as you can before class starts to leave more time for studying later.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook!
I recently finished an introductory course in anatomy/physiology, and this was the textbook we used. It is an excellent way to introduce yourself to the various systems that compose our bodies. I would recommend this for anyone who wants a basic understanding of the body without having to go to medical school.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text
This book is fantastic. I learned a lot from it and the organization of the material was great. It even offers "Checkpoints" for focus on what you just read, and the answers for the "Critical Thinking" questions and "Self-quizzes" are in the back of the book. These questions are so helpful...my instructor actually used several like them on our exams. My only gripe with this text is that a few of the answers to the Self-Quizzes are incorrect. But if you've done your work, you'll be able to tell the answer doesn't jive. Hopefully in the next edition they'll do more meticulous editing on that. But they give you the usual A&P stuff, and then apply it to real-life diagnoses & situations.

5-0 out of 5 stars great for massage therapy students

5-0 out of 5 stars Such a great learning tool!
This is definitely a great buy! We came across this at our doctor's office and it sparked a whole afternoon of conversations about the human body.It boils down complex topics to a level that is easy for preschoolers to understand without being overly basic.

4-0 out of 5 stars My daughter really liked it
My 2 1/2 year old daughter has been very interested in how the body works. She liked this book very much and we read it a lot for a week or two. I was a little disappointed just in that there was no flow to the book. It seemed a bit disjointed. But I would recommend it, especially for the very young crowd. It's a good intro but I think I'll also be looking for what's next.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book to start

4-0 out of 5 stars The Human Body (Scholastic First Discovery)
My four year old has enjoyed this book very much. The transparencies with different systems of the body are especially fun. However she was disappointed and confused that it doesn't in any way include the reproductive organs, so we ended buying a more sophisticated anatomy book that was more satisfying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, effective experiments!
I love the Janice VanCleave's Play & Find out series & this book is no exception. It is written for 4-7 year olds. It has great, simple enough activities to do with your kids to make science & the human body come alive. It has great information and is VERY user friendly. Make today's play day a day they will not only enjoy, but will remember and learn from! It has such simple, but interesting ideas that really make the point stick.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best preschool science series!
I am a science teacher and I absolutely adore the Janice VanCleave science series.
It is HIGHLY appropriate for the early childhood set.
Older kids - 7 and up may find it too babyish however.
Every topic starts out with a question: i.e. I wonder why hair is curly and straight... And then it leads you through a very age appropriate/simple experiment and a few enrichment activities...
Each topic then ends in a very short explanation... The book has illustrations and each question is maybe 3 pages long total, before it goes on to another question.
I HIGHLY reccomend it as the BEST science series that I know of for young children. Experiences are the best science learning tools for this age.. more than reading non-fiction and such, although that has benefits as well..
Buy these books!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I checked this book out at my library and loved it so much I plan to purchase one.I home school my preschooler. This book was perfect. My child enjoyed the experiments. It's nice to have educational books like this geared directly at the younger child.I spend a great deal of time researching the internet and the library to find good science activities for us.This and the remaining books in the series will definatly be added to our home library and should save me some time.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
The experiements in this book are simple, yet answer the question wonderfully. My children (4,6,7) all enjoyed the activities, which lastedjust long enough for their short attention span.Best suited for youngchildren (5 yrs old), I would recommend this to any Parent of a preschoolchild.

2-0 out of 5 stars A great book to introduce pre-schoolers to the body.
This book is a good introduction to the human body for very youngchildren. I attempted to interest my children in the book (6 and 9 yearsold), but ready answers to the books questions came from their own personalknowledge not the book. They were not interested in the "Let's findout!" portion and came up with their own experiments to investigatethe questions.

I suppose that a child with little natural curiosity wouldfind this book interesting. But if you are trying to introduce new conceptsto your children there are better bets. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
The main goal of this book is to present principles of classical mechanics using case studies involving human movement. The book assumes a background in calculus and physics. Vector algebra and vector differentiation are introduced in the text and are used to describe the motion of objects. Advanced topics such as three-dimensional motion mechanics are treated in some depth. Whenever possible, the analysis is also presented graphically, by using diagrams and software-created sequences of human movement in an athletic event or a dance performance. Each chapter contains illustrative examples and problem sets.

It can be used for as a text for undergraduate biomedical engineering students in their core course in mechanics. It can also be an used as a text for a graduate course in sports biomechanics, and as a supplement for general engineering statics and dynamics courses. In addition, the book will be of interest to orthopaedic surgeons, physical therapists and graduate students in sports medicine.

"Human Body Dynamics is a remarkable book. A concise, comprehensive, well-written and well illustrated first chapter gives a necessary introduction to the anatomy of the human body. In the following chapters human body dynamics is explored using the principles of classical mechanics. The concluding chapter deals with the methods of three-dimensional mechanics. With these powerful tools, a myriad of very interesting problems are solved. This, I would say is the dessert of the feast."H. Bülent Atabek, Professor Emeritus of Biomedical Engineering, The Catholic University of America.

"This book represents a very ambitious undertaking of providing, in a single volume, a comprehensive exposition of the kinematics and dynamics governing the motion of the human body as well as a complete course of general mechanics. The author has been remarkably successful in achieving both objectives. He has produced a very accessible text without sacrificing the accuracy of arguments and avoiding undue simplifications of the problems. The book should prove to be a great value to the practitioners in orthopedics, sports medicine and bioengineering research. University students interested in careers in medicine or bioengineering may find it an interesting alternative to the standard courses in mechanics."Maciej P. Bieniek, Renwick Professor Emeritus of Engineering Mechanics, Columbia University.

"The distinguishing feature of this book is that the development of the fundamentals of classical mechanics, which govern the biological applications, is so careful and precise, despite its compactness. This book will be especially appealing to students of human body motion who are seriously interested in understanding the laws which determine that motion. It most certainly should be owned and studied by all instructors of courses in biomechanics."Frank L. DiMaggio, Carleton Professor of Civil Engineering, Columbia University. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for lab
Loved this for anatomy 1. We didn't get cadavers at my school, so this really cut it for me. Pictures are large and clear, and well saturated. The labels are great to memorize from.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gray's Anatomy
The book arrived in extremely good condition, and the price was very reasonable.I have always wanted a Gray's Anatomy book but could never afford it.I would buy from this seller again.Thank you for an accurate description on the sales page.

5-0 out of 5 stars For artists too...
I had a copy of this many years ago, in college. No, not a medical student but rather an art student.

It's still the best book for studying how to draw the human figure. There's another that is very helpful, "Art Anatomy" by William Rimmer but you really do still need Grey's Anatomy of the Human Body to get all the details.
