Description:
Pulp mill effluent containing toxic chemicals was treated by different advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) consisting of treatments by hydrogen peroxide, Fenton's reagent (H"2O"2/Fe^2^+), UV, UV/H"2O"2, photo-Fenton (UV/H"2O"2/Fe^2^+), ozonation and peroxone (ozone/H"2O"2) in laboratory-scale reactors for color, total organic carbon (TOC) and adsorbable organic halogens (AOX) removals from the pulp mill effluent. Effects of some operating parameters such as the initial pH, oxidant and catalyst concentrations on TOC, color, AOX removals were investigated. Almost every method used resulted in some degree of color removal from the pulp mill effluent. However, the Fenton's reagent utilizing H"2O"2/Fe^2^+ resulted in the highest color, TOC and AOX removals under acidic conditions when compared with the other AOPs tested. Approximately, 88% TOC, 85% color and 89% AOX removals were obtained by the Fenton's reagent at pH 5 within 30min. Photo-Fenton process yielded comparable TOC (85%), color (82%) and AOX (93%) removals within 5min due to oxidations by UV light in addition to the Fenton's reagent. Fast oxidation reactions by the photo-Fenton treatment makes this approach more favorable as compared to the others used. ... Read more

Description:
While having the potential to significantly improve heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system performance, advanced (e.g., optimal, robust and various forms of adaptive) controllers have yet to be incorporated into commercial systems. Controllers consisting of distributed proportional-integral (PI) control loops continue to dominate commercial HVAC systems. Investigation into advanced HVAC controllers has largely been limited to proposals and simulations, with few controllers being tested on physical systems. While simulation can be insightful, the only true means for verifying the performance provided by HVAC controllers is by actually using them to control an HVAC system. The construction and modeling of an experimental system for testing advanced HVAC controllers, is the focus of this article. A simple HVAC system, intended for controlling the temperature and flow rate of the discharge air, was built using standard components. While only a portion of an overall HVAC system, it is representative of a typical hot water to air heating system. In this article, a single integrated environment is created that is used for data acquisition, controller design, simulation, and closed loop controller implementation and testing. This environment provides the power and flexibility needed for rapid prototyping of various controllers and control design methodologies. ... Read more

Description:
Terephthalic acid (TPA) is widely applied as a raw material in making polyester fiber, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, polyester films, etc. TPA is toxic and is known to act as endocrine disruptor. TPA wastewater is traditionally treated by biological process and this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of several advanced oxidation processes on TPA removal. The oxidation processes studied were: UV-TiO"2, UV-H"2O"2, UV-H"2O"2-Fe, O"3, O"3/Fe, O"3/TiO"2, UV-O"3-H"2O"2-Fe and UV-O"3-H"2O"2-Fe-TiO"2. The results indicate that the time required for the complete destruction of 50ppm of TPA can be minimized from 10h using UV-TiO"2 system, to less than 10min by UV-H"2O"2-Fe-O"3 system. Some of the likely organic intermediates identified during TPA destruction include, benzoquinone, benzene, maleic acid and oxalic acid. Possible destruction pathway of TPA has been proposed. TPA degradation by various systems was also analyzed based on the reaction kinetics and operating costs. ... Read more

Description:
In this paper, a comparison of various advanced oxidation processes (O"3, O"3/UV, H"2O"2/UV, O"3/H"2O"2/UV, Fe^2^+/H"2O"2) and chemical treatment methods using Al"2(SO"4)"3.18H"2O, FeCl"3 and FeSO"4 for the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and color removal from a polyester and acetate fiber dyeing effluent is undertaken. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) showed a superior performance compared to conventional chemical treatment, which maximum achievable color and COD removal for the textile effluent used in this study was 50% and 60%, respectively. Although O"3/H"2O"2/UV combination among other AOPs methods studied in this paper was found to give the best result (99% removal for COD and 96% removal for color), use of Fe^2^+/H"2O"2 seems to show a satisfactory COD and color removal performance and to be economically more viable choice for the acetate and polyester fiber dyeing effluent on the basis of 90% removal. ... From the supplier: National Institute of Health director Harold Varmus' analogy on peer review and democracy is erroneous due to distinct differences between the two concepts. Although peer review has been successfully used by the NIH to fund its research and development projects, other funding methods have been found to work as well. One primary example is the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's formula funding method.

Description:
The application of advanced oxidation processes (H"2O"2/UV, TiO"2/H"2O"2/UV and TiO"2/UV) to treat tannery wastewater was investigated. The experiments were performed in batch and continuous UV reactors, using TiO"2 as a catalyst. The effect of the hydrogen peroxide concentration on the degradation kinetics was evaluated in the concentration range 0-1800mgL^-^1. We observed that the degradation rate increased as the hydrogen peroxide increased, but excessive H"2O"2 concentration was detrimental because it acted as a hydroxyl radical scavenger since it can compete for the active sites of the TiO"2. In the H"2O"2/UV treatment, the COD removal reached around 60% in 4h of reaction, indicating that the principal pollutants were chemically degraded as demonstrated by the results for BOD, COD, nitrate, ammonium and analysis of the absorbance at 254nm. Artemia salina toxicity testing performed in parallel showed an increase in toxicity after AOP treatment of the tannery wastewater. ... Read more

Description:
Research articles and research theses constitute two key genres used by scientific communities for the dissemination and ratification of knowledge. Both genres are produced at advanced stages of individuals' enculturation in disciplinary communities present original research aim to persuade the academic community to accept new knowledge claims, and are the result of social negotiations between authors and disciplinary gatekeepers. However, despite their similarities, these two academic genres differ as regards the status of their authors in academic discourse communities and the power asymmetries between themselves and disciplinary gatekeepers. Awareness of these differences in relations of power and of the social forces behind the formation of genres, which are constituents of advanced academic literacy, defines the rhetorical strategies used by the authors of these two genres. This is revealed by a comparison of 17 research articles and nine samples of research theses from the fields of electronic and chemical engineering. The analysis of the texts focuses on the density and function of hedges and, in particular, discourse-based strategic hedges and of their personal or impersonal expression. The analysis indicates that students hedge more than expert authors and virtually wholly refrain from taking personal responsibility for their claims. Expert authors, on the other hand, hedge less than the students and often use personally attributed hedges. The comparison additionally indicates differences in the frequency of certain types of strategic hedges between RA authors and students. power asymmetries between themselves and disciplinary gatekeepers. Description:
Advanced stack-ventilated buildings have the potential to consume much less energy for space conditioning than typical mechanically ventilated or air-conditioned buildings. This paper describes how environmental design considerations in general, and ventilation considerations in particular, shape the architecture of advanced naturally ventilated (ANV) buildings. The attributes of simple and advanced naturally ventilated buildings are described and a taxonomy of ANV buildings presented. Simple equations for use at the preliminary design stage are presented. These produce target structural cross section areas for the key components of ANV systems. The equations have been developed through practice-based research to design three large educational buildings: the Frederick Lanchester Library, Coventry, UK; the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, London, UK; the Harm A. Weber Library, Elgin, near Chicago, USA. These buildings are briefly described and the sizes of the as-built ANV features compared with the target values for use in preliminary design. The three buildings represent successive evolutionary stages: from advanced natural ventilation, to ANV with passive downdraught cooling, and finally ANV with HVAC support. Hopefully the guidance, simple calculation tools and case study examples will give architects and environmental design consultants confidence to embark on the design of ANV buildings. ... Read more

Description:
For non-native English writers, second language (L2) advanced academic literacy encompasses knowledge of the rhetorical, linguistic, social and cultural features of academic discourse as well as knowledge of English as used by their academic disciplines. Literacy is acquired through a socialization process embedded in social practice, patterned by social institutions [Barton, D. & Hamilton, M. (1998). Local literacies: Reading and writing in one community. London: Routledge] and interactions between learners and their academic discourse community members. These interactions may also be identified as a writer's social network, which, in turn, may influence the writer's attitude to second language academic literacy acquisition. Adopting a social network perspective, this paper poses two questions: (1) What type of relationships do English as a Foreign Language (EFL) graduate students form in order to develop L2 academic literacy? (2) What impact do these relationships have on students' acquisition of L2 academic literacy and writing. The results suggest that the composition of a writer's social network affects L2 advanced academic literacy acquisition and practice as disciplinary communication. Implications for FL practitioners are considered. ... Read more

Description:
Diverse advanced oxidation process (AOP) techniques applying UV, TiO"2/UV, O"3 and O"3/UV were used to degrade pollutants contained in tannery wastewater. The total mineralization of these pollutants is desirable, but it is quite energy consuming and sometimes impossible. Therefore the objective was to achieve an enhancement of biodegradability, preferentially with a decrease in toxicity in parallel. This work demonstrates that the dominant pollutants were chemically degraded by oxidation, while changes in carbon content were only marginal. These results were obtained monitoring the total organic carbon content (TOC), chemical and biochemical oxygen demand (COD and BOD), and substance-specific pollutant content by application of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Daphnia magna toxicity testing performed in parallel proved a decrease in toxicity after AOP treatment of the tannery wastewater. ... Read more

Description:
Research indicates the importance of providing appropriate workforce development for the successful implementation of advanced manufacturing technologies (AMTs). However, research has often assumed that a direct relationship between advanced technology and workforce development exists with limited consideration to intervening factors. This paper suggests that workers may be important ''intermediaries'' between the socio-technical elements through their role as assessors of developmental activities within the AMT workplace. The role of contextual factors (i.e., environmental uncertainty, empowerment and competitive developmental expenditures) to influence the impact of worker assessments on workforce development decisions was also examined. Regression results indicate that workers assessments significantly influence plant decisions regarding workforce development activities. These findings support the role of worker assessments as ''intermediary'' factor within the social-technical system. Findings indicate that contextual variables did not influence the relationship between worker assessments and plant developmental decisions. Description:
A new methodology-based on the combination of flow injection analysis and a distributed expert system-is proposed for the on-line chemical quality control of olive oil. This knowledge-based system is in charge of carrying out the flow injection determination of total acidity, peroxide value, and UV spectrophotometric measurements (K"2"3"2 and K"2"7"0), according to EU legislation. On the other hand, the expert system, apart from supervising the correct functioning of the system (devices, clogging, analysis frequency, and so on), performs the definite classification of the analyzed oil by evaluating the oil quality from the values yielded, according to previously established specifications. Satisfactory results have been obtained in the application of this approach to different samples of Spanish olive oil along the storage process. The distributed expert system also allows for the remote control of the analysis process owing to the interconnection of the different nodes by means of a communication network. ... Read more
