This book provides the key. By picking up where his enormously popular Visual QuickStart Guide left off, best-selling author Jason Cranford Teague explores the advanced DHTML and CSS programming techniques you need to take your Web sites to the next level. Covering everything from standards and accessibility to separating content from style; creating multicolumn layouts; combining text and graphics; creating controls, menus, forms, and special effects; working with other Web languages; and much more, this friendly, task-based volume is a must-have if you're serious about Web design. Step-by-step instructions and a strong visual format make complex topics understandable, even fun--especially when coupled with the loads of tips, screen shots and practical, working examples that Jason has provided.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not advanced and misses the point
I was greatly disappointed with this book. I have bought many other visual quickpro books which have been great.

This book is not advanced. The examples in this book do not separate content, presentation and function.

Javascript should be separated from the content of the page, not mashed into the (X)HTML as was typically done in early web sites. The javascript hooks in the code examples are invariably hard-coded into onclick=".." attributes. While that may work fine at first, just try updating pages full of onclick attributes and you'll be looking for a better way.

CSS should be used to separate the presentation from the content of the page as much as possible. It seems that the author has 'divitis': there are so many nested divs in some of the examples it's hard to follow the markup.

The book gives lip service to accessibility, but does not follow the concept through: many of the examples will not degrade gracefully in non-javascript enabled browsers. Dynamic html pages _can_ play well with all browsers: this is advanced javascript. If you follow the examples in this book, however, you'll be discriminating against a large part of your audience.

You will get better information in:
For css:
CSS Mastery: Advanced Web Standards Solutions
Web Standards Solutions: The Markup and Style Handbook (Pioneering Series)
For javascript:
ppk on JavaScript, 1/e (VOICES)

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book - a must have for your library
When I first got interested in DHTML I purchased both of Teague's books on DHTML and CSS. They have proved to be invaluable. His writing is easy to understand. The format is easy to follow and consistent throughout. He uses just enough illustrations to demonstrate the subject. His knowledge of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS is exemplary and the examples used in the book are pretty much bug/error free (unlike many books I've read that contain code). If you're just getting started with DHTML, get both of Teague's books. You won't regret it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cookbook
This is the sequel to the excellent DHTML and CSS for the World Wide Web. It is merely a cookbook of techniques, whereas the first book is an outstanding introduction to an advanced subject.

This book is worth leafing through to find items of interest but it does not advance the state of the art in the way the first book did.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not what I was expecting...
I was a little surprised that the one chapter on Advanced DHTML techniques could have been titled: "Intro to JavaScript."I was disappointed because there was little on advanced CSS layout (1 chapter) with examples that were difficult to follow.

If you want a book teaching JavaScript and PHP integration this book is for you.If you want a book on advanced CSS techniques that you might want to look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best tutorial yet
Mr. Teague has written an instructional book which, in my opinion is the most useful and understandable coding book I have ever read. From the introductory pages right through to the appendices this book is presented in an easy, step by step format. Mr. Teague's tutorial style makes this book an incredibly useful reference source for even more advanced web coders. Unlike other web design books I own, DHTML & CSS Advanced is well organized, with clear illustrations and colour coded snippets. The inclusion of a section about working with databases enables the reader to add more function to his or her web designs and offer more the site's visitors.

With so many coding options and the need to have a site appear properly to the majority of current browsers, it can be difficult to keep web coding effective and clean. Mr. Teague shows his readers how to accomplish this. I think the one thing which impressed me the most about this book is the effort Mr. Teague put into making sure his explanations were clear and concise. His instructions can do nothing other than add to the functionality of the reader's web coding and design. By taking the reader through web designing from concept to publication, Mr. Teague accomplishes what the cover of his book promises: extending skills in a fast and efficient way.

Unlike many other design books on the market, Mr. Teague's manual does not include a cd-rom containing all of the code snippets used throughout the book. I for one am glad he (for whatever reason) didn't include one. This forces the student to type out the snippets in the book in order to learn what the author is teaching. In my opinion, this helps the person learn faster, and to pay attention to what he or she is doing. This helps to reinforce the basics of site coding in the designer's mind, and eventually clean effective sites on the web will be the result.

The quick reference tables and glossaries are infinitely useful and cover a wide range of design coding. DHTML and CSS Advanced will be one of the first books I recommend to new designers. Mr. Teague has a winning style of tutorial writing, and I look forward to reading further publications by him. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow - excellent examples
I am a trainer and instructional designer at a university.I thought this book was very useful in helping me to use Flash MX for education. You would likely need some introductory training in Flash and Dreamweaver basics before using this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professor Says, "A+"
I'm an assoc. prof. of New Testament currently working to produce an interactive web workbook for teaching/learning skills for New Testament interpretation.I want to give students practice developing close reading skills rather than ask them simply to drill content. For a couple of years, I have had a dream for such a site, and I felt sure it was buildable, but didn't know how.I care enough about how the interactions work and the relationship of content to design that I wanted to design the interactions myself if possible.Yet I didn't know anything but a little Dreamweaver and its CourseBuilder extension.

Working my way through a copy of Macromedia MX eLearning is changing all that.Wow!The book teaches how to develop interactions in Dreamweaver and Flash as well as offering several chapters on putting ColdFusion to work in eLearning. Each chapter includes a fine combination of hands-on work and explanation for why we are being asked to do what we're doing, especially at those places where some task is counter-intuitive.The book is also free of mistakes, typos and muddled language, a welcome plus when so many computer books seem to have been rushed to press without having been edited or proofed.

Bardzell's book is giving me two things:(1) hands on work with the software that introduces and reinforces learning without devolving into busywork and (2) a model for developing materials (like the book itself) that teach effectively from a distance. A+

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Technical Book!
This is an excellent book where you learn how to integrate ColdFusion MX, Dreamweaver MX, and Flash MX by building interactive learning applications. The exercises are explained in great details and contain many tips and techniques especially for Dreamweaver and Flash. The newer aspects of interacting ColdFusion MX with Flash MX are not covered, but for those of us still using ColdFusion 5 there is a good coverage of LoadVars.I recommend this book without any reservation as it is one of the best technical books I have read so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intelligent and Easy to Understand
Jeffrey Bardzell's book is intelligently written with plenty easy-to-understand examples. He engages, inspires, and motivates learners throughout. His Dante's Inferno project makes learning fun. He breaks subject matter down into comprehendible pieces, using Aristotelian logic in places. This guy knows what he's doing. Of several computer books that I have purchased over the years, this is the first time I have written a review. You can learn eLearning and website design, and this book will teach you how-even if you are a motivated beginner, technical type, or humanities person-this book is suited for most everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent explained and a broad scope of topics
This book gives you a broad scope of the to be used topics when creating elearning sites. You will get a quick tutorial of the most important Macromedia features to get the process done. In a clear way building up from using templates, attaching stylesheets, showing and hiding layers with Dreamweaver and using Flash for simulation and user-interactivity the book introduces the interaction with databases by using Coldfusion.

I thought Coldfusion was rather difficult to learn, because the tips of the week by Macromedia were a little to quick for me. But Jeffrey Bardzell proved it is easy. In a straight-forward way you are taken by the hand to take all the basic steps for building a data-driven website. ... Read more

From the author: This study examined the academic and affective profiles of gifted students who were classified under the five prototypes of low-income White students, low-income African American students, low-income other minority students, high nonverbal and low verbal students, and twice-exceptional students. A total of 37 vignettes were developed and analyzed based on interviews with selected students, their teachers, and parents. Within and cross-prototype themes were derived. Both cognitive and affective impacts were found, suggesting the power of gifted program membership on enhancing self-confidence and building higher level skills of communication and thinking. All groups interviewed appeared to think that the gifted program had been good for the students in the study, providing challenge at the cognitive level and self-confidence at the affective level. Differences that emerged through the analysis of stakeholder perspectives suggested that students were the least aware of learning problems, but more aware than their parents or teachers of the affective and social issues affecting them. Parents seemed most attuned to their child's heightened self-esteem as a result of identification and program participation. Teachers seemed very aware of learning problems displayed by the child, typically related to perceived motivation, organization, and social skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Advanced web sites made 'really' easy
i was not web programmer before and i found this book in aestiva H2O web site, it was my first advanced web programming and was really easy to achive perfect results

the only thing the author may need to add is a CD-Rom, book some time have long code parts or at least a web location where you can copy and paste the codes

also book did not mention that aestiva has released free and smaller copy of HTML/OS called H2O Gold, and because this release if free, it will encourage newbies to start learning HTML/OS rather than the $800 for HTMLOS PRO, the book is very usefull too if you just want to use H2O only.

last advice, if you totally new to web programming then get this book with a free copy of H2O and you really done, do not bother yourself again with complicated PHP and PERL things

5-0 out of 5 stars Get a head start in web-based computing.
When I first learned about computers, only a few of them existed in the world. Since then, something extraordinary has happened in computing about every ten years, like Aestiva's web-programming language HTML/OS which is the subject of this book. Itgrabbed my attention and turned my professional life in a new direction. ADVANCED WEB SITES MADE EASY teaches all major concepts of this exciting technology with many well chosen examples. It contains code and building blocks that can readily be used as the core ofweb-based applications. Included with the book is free access to a web site featuring solutions to the exercises, a user forum, book corrections, all the book's code in downloadable form, and your own copy of HTML/OS free for 30 days.

As you work your way through the book, you'll get a good understanding of this powerful and flexible language. Chapter after chapter teaches you how easy it is to make sophisticated use of it by adding just a few lines of BASIC-like code to your HTML documents. You'll also begin to think in a new way about web computing. HTML/OS frees you from the hassles of systems integration. Whether you just want to add dynamic features to an existing site, design complex web sites, or develop web-based software, you'll never have to worry about compatibility. It runs on all platforms and includes a built-in database engine.

You'll be well equipped to build advanced web sites with this clearly written book, its companion web site, the HTML/OS manual, and the Aestiva User Center with its many ready-made examples of commercial applications and utilities, collection of sample code, and extensive knowledge base.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Work
"Advanced Web Sites Made Easy" is a remarkable book. I read lots of third-party technical books, and this one really stands out.

It's well written, the explanations are clear, the examples are not only useable code but paced so as to be make learning progressive, and there's no fluff or patronizing chattiness. What's amazing is how often the chapters answered the questions I was having AS I was having them.

I feel really lucky that this book was available when I came to HTML/OS. It's great software (I almost don't want other web developers to know how good it is) but the official documentation and help just aren't enough.

I especially appreciate the opening and closing sections, which give some historical pespective on this kind of software development, and illuminate some potential business uses that were obscure to me as a web developer.

Kudos on a really fine piece of technical writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even for the novice
The Aestiva HTML/OS program makes creating interactive websites with databases, search on demand systems, and other usually complicated programming tasks quite easy.I have NO programming experience.Aestiva's near-English commands and simple coding structure mean that I have built and helped to build dozens of sites. The syntax is easy to pick up (learn by doing) and the online lessons that come with each copy make the learning FAST. If you want more control of your website and less dependence on gurus I urge you to read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must for all web developers.
ADVANCED WEB SITES MADE EASY is simple, clear and easy to understand with lots of examples and exercises. It travels deep in advanced HTML/OS programming for the more advanced programmers.
I have been working with Aestiva HTML/OS for 5 years; I have used PHP, ASP, Cold Fusion and many other similar products. I haven't found anything else that can come close to the performance, flexibility and easiness of use of Aestiva's engine. It's a tool to be use by beginners as well as veteran professionals in the Internet industry, like myself.
This book is a must for all web developers.... ... Read more

Description:
In this study UV/TiO"2, electro-Fenton (EF), wet-air oxidation (WAO), and UV/electro-Fenton (UV/EF) advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been applied to degrade Reactive Red 120 (RR120) dye in aqueous solution. The most efficient method on decolorization and mineralization of RR120 was observed to be WAO process. Photocatalytic degradation of RR120 by UV/TiO"2 have been studied at different pH values. At pH 3 photocatalytic degradation kinetics of RR120 successfully fitted to Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) kinetics model. The values of second order degradation rate (k'') constant and adsorption constant (K) were determined as 4.525mgL^-^1min^-^1 and 0.387Lmg^-^1, respectively. Decolorization efficiency observed in the order of WAO>UV/TiO"2=UV/EF>EF while WAO>UV/TiO"2>UV/EF>EF order was observed in TOC removal (mineralization). For all AOPs, it was found that degradation products in reaction mixture can be disposed safely to environment after 90min treatment. ... Read more

Description:
This paper presents a mixed integer programming (MIP) model which succeeds in a system integration of the production planning and shop floor scheduling problems. The proposed advanced planning and scheduling (APS) model explicitly considers capacity constraints, operation sequences, lead times and due dates in a multi-order environment. The objective of the model is to seek the minimum cost of both production idle time and tardiness or earliness penalty of an order. The output of the model is operation schedules with order starting time and finish time. Numerical result shows that the suggested APS model can favorably produce optimal schedules. ... Read more

Description:
Patients with advanced, non-curable cancer face difficult decisions on further treatment, where a small increase in survival time must be balanced against the toxicity of the treatment. If patients want to be involved in these decisions, in keeping with current notions of autonomy and empowerment, they also require to be adequately informed both on the treatments proposed and on their own disease status and prognosis. A systematic review was performed on decision-making and information provision in patients with advanced cancer. Studies of interventions to improve information giving and encourage participation in decision-making were reviewed, including both randomised controlled trials and uncontrolled studies. Almost all patients expressed a desire for full information, but only about two-thirds wished to participate actively in decision-making. Higher educational level, younger age and female sex were predictive of a desire to participate in decision-making. Active decision-making was more common in patients with certain cancers (e.g. breast) than others (e.g. prostate). A number of simple interventions including question prompt sheets, audio-taping of consultations and patient decision aids have been shown to facilitate such involvement. ... Read more

Description:
Advanced oxidation processes were combined with biological treatment processes in this study to remove both pesticides and then the COD load from aqueous solutions. It was found that O"3 and O"3/UV oxidation systems were able to reach 90 and 100%, removal of the pesticide Deltamethrin, respectively, in a period of 210min. The use of O"3 combined with UV radiation enhances pesticides degradation and the residual pesticide reaches zero in the case of Deltamethrin. The combined O"3/UV system can reduce COD up to 20% if the pH of the solution is above 4. Both pesticide degradation and COD removal in the combined O"3/UV system follow the pseudo-first-order kinetics and the parameters of this model were evaluated. The application of the biological treatment to remove the bulk COD from different types of feed solution was investigated. More than 95% COD removal was achieved when treated wastewater by the O"3/UV system was fed to the bioreactor. The parameters of the proposed Grau model were estimated. ... Read more
