This book is a well written easy to understand book. For the first time horse buyer, it is exactly what I wanted. The author not only tells you what you need to know about miniature horses and how to care for them, she also gives you ideas of how she raises her horses.

Just a wonderful book..It helped me with my 31 miniature horses and gave me alot of wonderful info.......I also go a similar book for my 15 regular sized horses.

3-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS ONLY FOR NOVICES
I just got done reading this book. It is a very good "broad" overview of the world of miniature horses, but I am a little disappointed because on many of the aspects such as care, showing, conformation, etc. etc. the author instructs the reader to read "other" books that go into more detail. I feel that if you have never owned a horse before, and are interested in minis, it's a good book for you. But if you are like me, and already have knowledge of equine behavior, this may just be a simple review of what you already know. Definitly a good book for the novice, but the more experienced horse-person will not gain a whole lot. ... Read more

Product Description
Written with the full participation of the American Quarter Horse Association-the largest equine breed registry in the world-The American Quarter Horse is a fully illustrated manual for prospective and novice owners and riders.
The American Quarter Horse is the world's most popular horse and America's oldest breed, with origins tracing back to the 1600s, along the eastern seaboard. Originally bred to fill colonists' passion for short-distance match racing, these heavily muscled, compact horses were perfectly suited to run faster than any other horse along narrow streets. As America moved west, so did the American Quarter Horse, and pioneers quickly learned of the horse's natural ability for herding cattle. This horse's willingness, intelligence, and disposition make him the ideal choice not only for first-time owners and recreational riders, but also for riders interested in all facets of Western, English, and racing competitions. As a show horse or trail horse, the American Quarter Horse is bound to please.
Beginning with a brief history of the breed, this book offers detailed advice on locating and selecting a horse, as well as stabling, feeding, grooming, and otherwise taking responsible care of the animal. Also explained are the American Quarter Horse's many uses: from informal trial riding to barrel racing, cutting, and reining; from Western horsemanship to show jumping, dressage, and racing. The American Quarter Horse is the indispensable guide for anyone interested in owning and riding America's favorite horse.

4-0 out of 5 stars Your First Horse Book
My 11-year-old loves horses and is planning to get a horse someday. This was fun to get to look forward to the day she will get the horse. It was full of information about how to find the right horse for you and how to care for the horse.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book but be aware of new govt requirements to owning horses
Before you buy any horse you should also be aware of the
USDA program that may put more work/burdens.cost on you than you want...

TheUSDA has a program supposedly designed to track animal disease but will affect every last animal owner in the US just so corporate agriculture can benefit and sell their meat globally. While corporate ag gets a free ride, those who own even one livestock animal will have to register their premises (thus losing property rights), microchip each critter (cost $$$$) and file birth, death and movement reports within 24 hours or face huge fines. If disease is suspected in an area the USDA can come in and kill the animals. (BUT Big ag gets JUST ONE lot number per group of animals.) Called NAIS, (national animal identification system) it will put livestock owners under more surveillance than illegals, terrorists or sex offenders. You will not find news of this program on mainstream media. See [...] for more info.

Beautifully illustrated throughout with color photography, "Seasons Of The Horse: A Practical Guide To Year-Round Equine Care" by horse owner, trainer, and professional competitor Jackie Budd is a 272-page compendium of basic information pertaining to all aspects of proper care and management for both staple-kept and field-kept horses throughout every season of the year. Beginning with an opening section of four chapters dealing with lifestyle options, the principles of feeding, routine health care, and year-round health conditions, "Seasons Of The Horse" goes on to cover carrying for the horse in the conditions of Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. All aspects of caring for the horse at all given points of the year are addressed including pasture management, summer riding, the cost involved, grooming the field-kept horse, and so much more. 3-0 out of 5 stars A "standard work" in draft horse literature
The author describes this book as an assemblage of materials from published land-grant school materials of the 20's and 30's, articles in "The Draft Horse Journal," articles in "Western Horseman" and "Organic Gardening and Farming," and some new material.A fair percentage of the book is more-or-less generic horse material - hoof care, breeding, feeding, housing and the like.Although interspersed with comments specific to draft horses, much of this could well have been left out. There is a large section on horse-drawn machinery, but this is starting to look dated. The emphasis is on traditional/antique horse-powered and drawn machinery of a type that is getting harder to find. There's a rising interest in adapting tractor equipment to horse-drawn use these days through the use of forecarts, which the book barely touches. The most valuable section of the book may be the section on harness and harnessing, which gives specifics on a wide range of hitch types. The next-to-last chapter is titled "sidelines" and covers several topics including decoration and logging. It's interesting reading but doesn't go into enough detail to be very useful. This is a worthwhile book to own.It probably is "must" reading for someone new to draft horses, but really points up the need for a tighter, more focused book that is up-to-date. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
This is one of the best practical horse care book available. It is a no nonsense approach using proper nutrition to correct a wide variety of health issues affecting horses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Natural Horse Care made Simple
Pat explains how over the 70 years that she has been working with horses diseases have developed in horses that never existed previously. The use of artificial fertilizers being the main reason - which ties up the minerals in the soil - especially the really important ones for horses!

She tells you how to simply remineralize your soil and will save you lots of money which you spend on expensive chelated processed vitamin and mineral supplements you don't need.

She has a simple treatment using minerals and vitamins for every ailment, but her main concern in the book is with getting the pH and the mineral content of your paddocks balanced and 'available' for use by your horse.

5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful book
Truly a must read. It really puts horse care back to 101. If you thought it was complicated, it truly is simple. I wish my own personal health care was that simple. In particular adding the seaweed supplement makes a huge difference in how the horses assimilate their feed. They seem so much more efficient. In any event, read it. It will not only teach you about feed, but also pasture management. Something so much ignored. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very satisfied!
As a college student, I found this book to be very informative and interesting. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in draft horses or owns drafts themselves. This books not only gives general information about horse care and health, it also comments on things that are more prevalennt in draft breeds. I was personally a little disappointed that the images in the book were not in color, which leaves out a detailed image of what certain conditions may look like. Overall, I am very satisfied with this book and will have it in my collection for the rest of my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Draft Horses, an Owner's Manual
This book contains very current information on draft horse health issues. It is written by a veterinarian and covers basic care, feeding, housing and health of draft horses. It does not cover breeds, conformation, temperament or training. All in all, this is a very good basic horse care book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Comprehensive Text!
I am very impressed with the depth of this book. It is an easy read and touches on every aspect of horse ownership. Draft horses are different and special amongst breed of horses and this book illustrates just that. I would recommend it for any draft horse owner.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Disappointment
I have been a draft horse owner for only 8 years, and I thought that this would be a good "insight" to these wonderful, gentle giants. This book does not give enough details nor does it explain the differences between draft horses and regular horses -- for example, draft horses only have to have their teeth floated maybe once every 2 years (shorter for some longer for others) as compared to a regular smaller breed horse. And their hooves need to be trimmed about once every 8-9 weeks as opposed to 4 weeks with a regular horse.Vet Schools and Farrier Schools do not teach but very little on draft horses, leading these folks to believe that draft horses should be treated exactly like their smaller cousins. This book should have pointed these things out in order to understand these horses without the "trial and error" method, which is how most of us feel like we're doing.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT INFO ON DRAFT HORSES

What a dynamically different equine health care reference this book is! I have been fortunate enough to have Dr. Brennan care for my horses over the years so I have much faith in her knowledge and words. Her book explains alternative veterinary practices (which crosses over to help explain some of these practices for humans as well). She explains acupuncture, acupressure, aromatherapy, Bach flower remedies, herbs, homeopathy, lasers, magnetic therapy, and massage. It also contains helpful sections on accupressure that the lay person can personally perform. My copy was worth a wait.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great overview of what can be done for your horse.
This book serves as a wonderful reference for the health of my equines. It gives very descriptive things that can be done. Recently when my warmblood foundered, I found the suggestions very helpful and empowering. I got to implement some of them right away and therefore made my girl more comfortable in this hard situation. I highly recommend this book as it takes the mystery out of many different approaches of equine care and gives one the opportunity to make informed, well thought out choices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Happy for the paperback
I own the hardback edition of this book and am very pleased the paperback edition has arrived. Sent it to a good friend looking for the pressure points of the horse, which Mary does a great job of showing in the sketches provided. This is the best alternative medicine book I have found for the horse.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive so far
A must read for anyone with an injured horse. This book will expose you
to the whole world of physical therapy treatments utilized by physical therapist,
sports medicine doctors, body workers, and others in the human world which
therapists like Mimi Porter are applying to equines. History of these treatments,
covering over two decades, validates their effectiveness bythe thousands of horses
successfully returned to pre-injured condition. It's important to note most of the
therapies discussed are not offered by standard veterinarian care.I particularly
like the incorporation for bodywork techniques, such as, cranialsacral and
myofascial release which offer more effective healing than traditional massage.
And ifyou wantan alternative to injecting your horse with medication there is an
excellent section covering iontophoresis.Even though it is not a protocol book,
and finding someone that is trained in many of these methods can be difficult,it's the

individual awareness and knowledge that will create a demand for much needed equine therapists. Well written with many excellent photos make this an enlightening and enjoyable read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The New Equine Sports Therapy
I found Ms Porter's book to be indispensably useful regarding Equine Sports Therapy, and also interesting to read. Each chapter focuses on a major theraputic modality, and discusses its basic scientific theory, techniques for proper use, and pros and cons. Ms Porter's holistic approach to Equine Therapy was much appreciated. Throughout her book she supports the horse as an individual, and stresses that each plan of treatment must be centered on that horse's individual needs, rather than just based on a manufacture's recommendation.

I would recommend this book to any Equine Vet, Therapist or Care-giver. It's a valued addition to my library.

3-0 out of 5 stars so-so
