It is more often than not taken for granted that anyreasonable horse or pony will abide all sorts of manipulations andengage in a variety of activities on our behalf. We are surprised andfrustrated when they don't.What we ask horses to do is often quiteincompatible with their natural instincts. From the behaviorist'spoint of view, the routine work and performance feats of domestichorses are truly remarkable. Equestrians have long been fascinated bythose people who seem to possess extraordinary ability to interacteffectively with difficult horses, to eke out superior performancesfrom seemingly ordinary animals. Currently, interest in equinebehavior and demand for the services of these specialists are atall-time highs. Training workshops and clinics have become almost ascommon as horse shows. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars More appropriate for burning than reading
Unfortunately I found this book was not only vastly lacking in educational detail, but was appalled by one of the recommendations made by the author on catching difficult horses. I would have expected a novice lay person to come up with depriving the horse of food and water in an effort to make them "dependant" upon you for thier very life (and therefore grateful to be caught and fed), however finding it in a book obviously marketed to beginners and novice horsepersons felt this was largely irresponsible. The book is also filled with biases and general assumptions about the expected behavior of horse genders and breeds. There is also a comment that Thoroughbreds are Warmbloods... ? Just wondering when this happened? There are better books out there.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Basic - maybe helpful to a novice
I agree with the other reviewer here. This book barely scratches the surface on horse behavior. To me it raised more questions than it answered. Very brief and superficial discussion. I have been involved with horses for thirty years and just recently discovered the usefulness of understanding a horse's perspective in day-to-day handling and training. If you are looking for a good book on understanding why horses do what they do and what to do about it, read all three of Mark Rashid's books, available here at Amazon.

2-0 out of 5 stars my review of understanding horse behavior
This book is very short and so is this review.I would only say that this book is good if you are a novice when it comes to horses.Anyone with experience would find this repetetive and boring. The book only coversvery basic points about horses. The book also does not give details aboutanything- it's more of an outline.I would close by saying that this bookis probably one to steer away from. ... I recommend this book unequivocally. ... Read more

My daughter, who is 8, LOVES this book. She has been horse crazy now (like her mother) for a year and is taking lessons. The book has lots of very interesting facts that she is always quoting to us. She also really loved the list of "How to tell if you are horse crazy". She went down the list and marked every one except the last, shopping on the internet for a horse. Since her teacher was looking for a new pony, my daughter begged to let her help look for one. So my daughter was able to finally put down that she was certifiably horse crazy.
The factual information is very useful for her and it is lots of fun. I highly recommend this book!

I was truly overwhelmed by this book. It was much more than I expected. The illustrations are clear and very helpful and abundant. The text is concise without being overly technical. It has helped me understand what my Vet is explaining and also how to explain problems better to my Vet. This books covers an enormous amount of ground. Unlike a lot of general health books written about horses, it does more than just touch upon a health issue, it provides useful information and is reinforced by the illustrations. Probably not a true beginners book but it is easy enough to get through for anyone serious about horse keeping and seeking relevant information. It is the best general horse health book I own.

5-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive and easy to understand
This is a book that all serious horse owners will benefit from.Without being too techincal, the author explains the horse in flowing narrative.Illustrations are also excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Vet Book
This is a superb vet book and a great value. Awesome research and information. It's a steal for the price for what you will learn. Along with this book I bought Equine Behavior by Paul McGreevy which is the best book on behavior and training I have ever read. Both of these books are a must for the horseman's library. My only complaint about this book is that the hoof section did not address the barefoot horse and and was focused on shoeing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really helpful info!
This book is packed with helpful information that I can really use...Rather than providing a dumbed-down, one-size-fits-all recipe for feeding, Briggs gives horse owners the facts and formulas they need to make sure their horses' nutritional needs are met.

4-0 out of 5 stars Try something else...
This book is complete and informative, albeit a little hard to read. Horses have many different dietary requirements: fiber, fat, vitamins, minerals, protein... and Karen Briggs doesn't create any charts or guides to help you figure out which elements are likely to be lacking in your particular horses diet. Instead, try "Beyond the Hay Days" which provides equally detailed and comprehensive information as well as helpful summary charts that help you understand what your equines diet might be lacking and how best to suppliment it. ...
