Product Description
An exclusive insight into America's most traditional native tribe. For many centuries the Hopi people have preserved their traditional and very private way of life. But in 1974 Hopi elders, together with theTribal Council, invited photographer SusannePage and her husband, author Jake Page, tochronicle the world of the Hopi-which is usually closed to outsiders, and particularly tophotographers. Since that unprecedentedinvitation, the pages have visited the Hopi land and people dozens of times and produced thisbeautifully illustrated and written book in1982. Hailed as a masterpiece when firstpublished, Hopi remains one 25 years later. Itplays a powerful, respectful tribute to thespiritual life, the past and the present, theland, and the culture of the Hopi people.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost a millenia of history
Billed as a sort of coffee table book that has rare photos from behind the scenes, the reason to buy this is really Jake Page's writing. Somehow managing to make even the most mundane activity captivating, the book explores just about every aspect of Hopi culture and life.

Sure, it's interesting to know that these are rare photos of a world that we are not likely, according to Jake, again see until 2070 or so. But I believe that the publishing company treated these photos with less respect than they deserve. Many of them were frustratingly grainy poorly reproduced prints.Others were given just a couple square inches of page real estate. The subject still comes through, but this isn't the kind of coffee table production that even high class cupcake photos get today.

The socially descriptive text, on the other hand, is engaging.I found the book hard to put down.Perhaps the only knock is thatI wish that they had taken the effort to create an index.Otherwise you will find this to be a rare visit to the small Hopi community. I found the last chapter particularly exciting. We're surprisingly invited to join a rare tour of the Hopi borders. From hidden mountaintop shrines to an ancient western edge of the Hopi lands down in the grand canyon, it reminds us about the stories Mr.Page provides about the travels and settling of Hopi lands on the order of a thousand years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hopi
Excellent update of the hardbound original version. Beautiful photos and layouts.Informative and easy to read text connecting the ancient past with Hopi life today. Authors share the history, beauty and traditions of the Hopi culture through the voices of the people.I purchased 5 copies, one for each of my children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A landmark effort of deep and luminous beauty
"Hopi" is a stunning 25th anniversary edition of a rare portrayal of the varied facets of life among the Hopi. Originally published in 1982 after the photographer/author team of Susanna and Jake Page were invited to visit Hopi tribal lands and record their cultural diversity and concerns. "Hopi" is filled with documentary, world class photography and sensitive summaries of some of the many Hopi tribal differences and dialogues. Chief among the factions are the Traditionalists and the Progressives, but within these large generalizations are countless subtle shadings and differences of opinion. Faithfully recording myriad details of Hopi daily life, ceremonial year events, and traditional sacred knowledge and bits of Hopi lore that were allowed to be shared with the dominant culture's representatives was the daunting goal of the Pages. They made clear the honor that was bestowed upon them to be invited to partake of the Hopi way of life for the purpose of recording even a fraction of their rich diversity. "Hopi" was nearly 8 years in the making, to show some of the time and effort and care that was invested in this beautiful project. It is a fascinating glimpse into a world already irrevocably changed by time and events. "Hopi" is a landmark effort of deep and luminous beauty. All American are enriched by these reverent efforts to present a culture in all its rich diversity.

Product Description
According to their own mythology, the Hopis emerged into the present world through an opening in the earth, or sipapu. Archaeological evidence indicates that at the very least they are direct descendants of the earliest Southwest peoples.

Long considered an ethnographic classic, Old Oraibi is as detailed a picture of Hopi religion as can be shown by an outsider. First published in 1944, it sensitively considers kinship, social organization, ceremonialism, and other lifeways of one of the most fascinating American Indian cultures, both before and after the 1906 schism between Traditionals and Progressives. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hard to Believe This Is The Life Lived Only 100 Years Ago
Wonderful autobiography tells of a Hopi Indian's life in plain matter-of-fact way! The author comes across as honest, sharing his thoughts, feelings, and beliefs regardless of the fact that he knows his story will be read by mostly white Americans who reject Hopi beliefs as nonsense. This book can teach everyone a valuable lesson about their own life, as well as about history and the culture of the Hopi Indians. Every time I pick up this book, I am reminded how easy I have it; we can go to the store for food, drive cars and have access to antibiotics/medication. Fascinating and revealing autobiography is highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
Arrived in a timely manner and was in the condition that it was said to be.

3-0 out of 5 stars GREAT
Alhtough I wasn't thrilled about the reading book it did come very quickly although it was clearly aged it was still in good condition.

2-0 out of 5 stars Required reading...
I had this book as required reading for a college course. For someone thoroughly interested in the topic, go for it. If you have a passing interest in Hopi culture, or are looking for an interesting read, pass on this book. Very dry, definitely felt directed towards academics; this book is a LIFE HISTORY written BY AN ANTHROPOLOGIST for ANTHROPOLOGISTS! If that's what you're interested in, full speed ahead; if you're interested in a good read, pick up something else.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the 2best books ever written
Reading is the most boring human activity there is... unless it comes to reading certain books, those actually being the only objects that should be called "books"as opposed to the rest which are just printed paper sheets. Writing a real "book" takes the best there is in humankind and the authors were lucky enough to have it all during the writting of this book. ... Read more

Product Description
This study focuses on the altars of the major annual Hopi ceremonials whichdisplay ritual objects, the possession and use of which give religious andsecular power. With the importance of such objects in mind, an iconographicstudy of Hopi religion is particularly illuminating. This study aims todemonstrate how to view Hopi altars and is supplemented by a theory of themechanics of efficacy in the Hopi altar context. The text provides a general introduction to Hopi religious practice anddistinguishes three levels of information: 1) the calendrical and ritualcontexts of Hopi altars, 2) the functions of these altars within thosecontexts, and 3) the iconography and iconology of the altars, understood herein a literal sense as the study of the forms and structures of the altars onthe one hand and the study of the implicit and explicit symbology of thealtars on the other. The book provides keys to understanding through exemplification and typology, and is meant to be of particular use to museums and research libraries. ... Product Description
Armin Geertz corrects what he sees as basic American and European tendencies to misrepresent non-Western cultures. Carefully documenting the historical role of prophecy in Hopi Indian religion, Geertz shows how prophecies about the end of the world have been created by the Hopi Traditionalist Movement and used by non-Indian movements, cults, and interest groups. Many of the seeming peculiarities of Hopi religion and culture have been invented, he says, by tourists, novelists, journalists, and scholars, and the millennial Traditionalist Movement has subtly co-authored European and American stereotypes of Indians. Geertz's richly detailed examples and persuasive arguments will be welcomed by all those interested in Native American studies, comparative religions, anthropology, and sociology. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars New Age Practitioners: Hang on a minute, read this book
A very interesting hypothesis and probably right on track. It is easy to believe that the grandeur of the "Hopi Prophecies" is merely a product of charlatan spoof that has precipitated ridiculous misconceptions and notions of a very important aspect of Hopi culture. Perhaps some elements of these prophecies are based in truth but what Armin Geertz has shown is that because of polital factionalism and intracultural bias many of these myths of Hopi religion were created merely to make certain non-Hopi individuals a great deal of money and to substantiate the political (and thus prestigious) ambitions of particular Hopi leaders. Before you jump onto the "New Age" bandwagan and start beating the drum to the dance of your commercial kachina, you should probably purchase this book and study it closely. In the end, just try thinking! ... Here the noted folklorist brings together traditional accounts of epic events and adventures in the life of Hopi clans and villages, from legendary to historical times. The setting of these various adventures and events is not the Southwest as we know it today, but a vast and largely unpeopled wilderness in which clans and families wandered in search of a final living place, and in search of their collective identity. Notes, a pronunciation guide, and a glossary enhance the reader’s appreciation of the text. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I found this to be a very authentic account of Hopi mythology. Added bonuses were "Notes on Stories" section in back; nice artwork by Arno, which added to overall myth feeling; and a few songs written in sheet music style.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good inrro to Hopi myth, legend and world view
For people who have heard about Hopis, and know enough about them to consider them a highly representative descendant of the Ancestral Puebloans, but nothing more, this is a decent book. It has stories of their origin from the third world, legends of tribal and clan migrations, and actual history, such as the split at Oraibi and the destruction of Awatovi.

But, one of the things many people with just base-level knowledge of Hopis may be interested in is kachinas. The author includes neither any critical study of their origin (Mexico, ultimately, via the Mimbres culture of SW New Mexico), nor any Hopi myths that focus on dances or ceremonies of kachinas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional
This is an exceptional compilation of Hopi stories and legends.Having read many books about Hopi, I have found nothing to compare. This is a 'must read' for all who are interested in building or adding to theirknowledge of the Hopi Way.This is not a new book, but the title and thecontent have stood the test of time.Enjoy!

"Rasta Heart is an engaging, earnest tale of a "simple family vacation" which turned into a life-altering journey and quest into the way of life known as Rastafarianism. Roskind ventures past the barriers of tourism and false-Rasta "wolves" into a series of encounters with the truly faithful. Lovers of reggae who are curious as to what Rastafarianism might mean to non-Jamaicans--and, yes, to non-Jamaicans of any skin color--can use this as both a vicarious journey and even as a tour guide, as the names and contacts of many of the good people Roskind met and interviewed, and of the recommended places he stayed at or visited, are included here. The poverty, confusion and contradictions of modern Jamaica are explored and, while solutions remain elusive, this is a heartfelt exploration of the questions."

"Greetings Robert,
Thanks for writing back. You have got it right teaching all people about One Love. I am seeing a surge from youths that are my peers, I am 25 years of age. Many people in this generation are about love and dealing with love towards all people and it's beautiful and warms my heart just thinking of it. I have been affected by your book and the message that the elders in JA are saying and you are saying and publishing. I am hopeful for the future that JAH will cause the world to dwell in peace and love. No more wars, no more killing, no killing in the name of GOD. JAH will make it happen if it is his will.
Many thanks to you and your family, Ras Joshua Jeresek"

I'm a seventeen year-old boy from Portugal(yes, you have reached Portugal) and let me tell you that I have the uttermost respect for you and your work. I really enjoy your book Rasta Heart. It has given me strength for the low tides. Jah bless you. Tell Rasta friends that there are people over the ocean that they have lighten up and taught many with their livity. Jah bless them and Jah bless you, messenger. Carlos Netto"

"Greetings, and thanks for sending I the book, Rasta Heart. It's too good to put down, one of the most informative books about Rasta I have read so far. I will be in touch when I finish it. We have lots to talk about. And thanks for all your work. One love, Lioness"

"As I keep close tabs on the events of this world, my heart sometimes grows too heavy to even carry with the weight of the sadness the human race fills me with. But you, Robert, and your family and your associates blow a gentle wind on the flame of my soul and help its fire glow bright again. It gives me hope that my time here on this planet can at least in some small measure or even for some short time coincide with an evolutionary step towards a higher plane by and for all humans.
Peace, brother and One Love, Steve Giliberto"

"I finished your book about 2 weeks ago and it is so hard to put into words how it has changed me its is like I have been waiting my whole life to read the words. It is like I knew all the things about the food and God but when I read the book it was like a witness and it made those concepts the truth .... it was like I had found my tribe .... I have know allot of Rastas and it seemed like they just had dreads and talked the talk so they could smoke dope but I was so drawn by Bob Marley and his music.. I thank you and Scram and maybe some day we can all meet . Love, Tamara"

Robert:
"I would like to express gratitude and to you for writing such a beautiful book. The book was written with Love and is about Love. The book has touched me in many ways. To you and the God inside you that connects us all in Love I give thanks. I like you have been a searcher for truth a better part of my life. At 36 I find that I know less than more on the subject of spirituality and truth. I think that your book express's the Rasta's beautiful simplicity of One Love wonderfully. You are right when you wrote once the Dogma is gone most every religion in it's purest form is about the One Love. I have been slowly turning towards vegetarianism for the past couple of years and after reading your book I am fully committed to a vegan life style. The Rasta's are a wise group. The "Ital" way to eat is the only way our species was meant to eat. To save the planet and preserve all living things in ecological balance. I thank you again for reminding me why we choose to eat this way. RASTAFAR...I !!!!! Robert Meyerhoff" ... Read more
