Product Description

Those soulful eyes that look up at you at the end of a rough day. The soft paws that knead into your lap and tell you with that you are “theirs.” Much more than a companion, more beloved than our nearest and dearest human family. Our pets.

Sixty-three percent of all US households have them. Owners spend untold amounts of money on food, toys, even Christmas presents for their pets. And they don’t stint when it comes to their pet’s health.

Dr. Shawn Messonnier has been a veterinarian for more than fifteen years. Once a conventional practictioner, he's embarked on a crusade to help pet owners keep their treasured furry friends healthy and happy, treating each patient not as a disease but as a unique living entity. Dr. Messonnier brings the reader into his waiting room and introduces them to some remarkable animals…and the courageous owners who never gave up on their pets. Using case studies and higlighting diseases that commonly afflict our pets, Dr. Messonnier shows us the integrative methods he has developed to help these creatures not only survive the maladies they were originally diagnosed with but in many cases go on to live long and healthy lives.  Unexpected Miracles will change the way you think about your  pet’s healthcare forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for every pet owner
The book is a fascinating collection of often heartwarming stories of cats and dogs who were either given a poor prognosis, a death sentence or a completely wrong diagnosis, and whose owners were coming to Dr. Messonier in hopes of finding a cure or at the very least a way to help their pet live a longer life.It also offers a thorough look at what truly integrative medical, or in this case, veterinary, care really means. An integrative approach to veterinary care uses both conventional treatments, commonly thought of as Western medicine, and natural, alternative and holistic treatments ranging from supplements to herbs to acupuncture.By taking a truly holistic approach, Dr. Messonier treats the patient, not the disease, and uses the best of all available treatment options to achieve optimal healing for each individual patient. This includes looking at the pet's environment and potential exposure to toxins, reducing vaccinations from the old paradigm of annual "shots" to only those required by law or no vaccinations at all, to eliminating by-products and low quality ingredients from the pet's diet.

While each story shared in this book is about the individual pet and the condition the pet's owner sought help with, there are definite commonalities in all the cases, and it's these commonalities that will give the reader a thorough understanding of what an integrative approach to health is truly all about.

In addition, the book is a testament to how much we love our pets and that most of us will go to great lenghts to find ways to keep these wonderful creatures happy and healthy by giving them the best possible care.

I think this book should be on every pet owner's book shelf as not only a reference book, but also as a reminder that sometimes, hope is the best medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, uplifting and thought-provoking...
As a strong advocate for holistic and natural health care for pets, I was incredibly moved and enlightened by "Unexpected Miracles".It isn't just about the fascinating stories..."Unexpected Miracles" is full of vital information that you can apply at home with your own furry friends.

Because I work in the field talking to animal-lovers, I hear a lot of stories where the vet and then the family gave up hope on their animal because traditional medicine was not able to heal. There is ALWAYS hope, and unexpected miracles gives you example after example of why you should NEVER give up.This book has inspired me to share this hope with others.

If you are an animal lover, "Unexpected Miracles" is a must-read...it will change the way you look at your family, your animals, and your life.Kudos to Dr. Shawn Messonnier for sharing his wisdom.

Educating Pet Owners About The Benefits of Natural and Holistic Health

5-0 out of 5 stars Uplifting For Pet Owners
As pet owners who have been told that nothing could be done for a beloved dog who was dying, we found "Unexpected Miracles" to be an uplifting and educational book on the virtues of holistic medicine for pets and the value of not giving up. Written by a vet, the book presents a series of vignettes detailing the stories of pet owners and their pets as they struggled with various illnesses ranging from mundane allergy issues to end-of-life struggles. The book also details the author's journey from a near-skeptic to full blown believer in holistic medicine for pets. Over and over, the message is "don't give up" and "try a different type of treatment" as the stories unfold. Realistically, not all the stories have storybook endings--indeed, pets do die, and sometimes there is nothing medically to be done. More often than one would realize, however, pets do make miraculous recoveries using alternative approaches when traditional vets have given up. Those stories provide hope for all of us who will face these issues with our pets multiple times over our lifetime, and it is gratifying to know that there is someone like Dr. Shawn who cares enough to try anything for pet owners who are looking for that miracle. While the book is close to 300 pages, it is an easy and quick read. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars My latest and most important book
This is my latest book, and truthfully probably the most important book I've written. The premise is simple:What would you do if your pet was given 24 hours to live? You have only 2 choices. Choice 1 is to accept the horrible diagnosis and prognosis and prepare for your pet's death. Unfortunately this choice is the one chosen by most pet owners. Choice 2 is to say NO and refuse to accept the diagnosis and prognosis, opting instead to find someone who can offer your pet some hope. Choice 2 is the choice made by my pet owning clients, people who love their pets so much they refuse to accept defeat. These owners know that there must be a better alternative than death, and will do anything to find a way to fight against all odds to give their pets some chance at life. Using their pets' own natural healing abilities, these owners utilize therapies not offered by conventional medicine but instead choose holistic therapies that offer true healing. In Unexpected Miracles, I share with you just a few of the stories of these wonderful clients and their pets. Choosing hope when all seems hopeless, you will find their stories heartwarming, touching, and inspirational. I hope you enjoy reading their stories as much as I enjoyed sharing them with you! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on relationship between stress and your pets health
I have shelf loads of books on dog and cat health and training. Conventional, alternative and some that are just fun to read. This book is the only one I've seen that makes the clear case for the importance of stress reduction in keeping our companion animals healthy. We know stress makes people sick so this makes sense.I sure wish he practiced in NJ I'd take all my pets to him.

He also makes the case for a true "holistic" approach to pet health and offers concrete suggestions and examples of what you should look for in a vet if that's the approach you want to take.A lot of this info would be helpful in finding a human doctor as well.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who cares about the health of their animals.

Kudos to Co-author Susan Weinstein for recognizing this theory needs to be shared.

Product Description
This book is the result of several years ofresearch conducted in Denmark on the quality of life of more than 10,000 Danes. Quality of life (QOL) and health are not the same. QOL is the state of being or existence of the person, while health is the state of body, mind and spirit. QOL is the state of your totality, your wholeness. QOL is influenced to some degree by our health, but much more, according to contemporary scientific knowledge, by a few core dimensions of life related to love, consciousness, gender and sexuality. In this book you will find the following:

Theory of holistic healing, existential holistic group therapy
* Group intervention, therapeutic touch as a classic art of healing
* Tools for holistic medicine, biomedicine and the physician today
* Lifestyle, health, psychoactive drugs, sex and quality of life
* Chronic illness, pain, alcoholism, whiplash associated disorder
* Coronary heart disease, cancer, HIV and quality of life

The improvement of personal philosophy of life seems to be the essence of holistic medicine and helping the patient to assume more responsibility.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for anyone interested in the total health of the total person
The most thoroughly researched work of its kind I've seen. Wide ranging, both in research and in implications for future directions in health, wellness, psychology, psychotherapy and counselling, and holistic coaching. We have said for a long time that lifestyle is an important factor in health or illness but these researchers have shown very convincingly thatquality of life (QOL), that is, the total assessment of one's life and place in the universe, is even more important.
This book should be compulsory for medical students and practitioners everywhere and no less so for students and professionals in psychology and related disciplines.

3-0 out of 5 stars updated edition
Please note that the out of print Matrix and Matrix Regulation (1991) has been updated as The Extracellular Matrix and Ground Regulation (2007) with a translation by Ingeborg Eibl, DC. The newer text is very readable and very affordable as compared to the out of print text.

Rodney G. Jackson, DC

5-0 out of 5 stars very important book
Matrix and Matrix Regulation is a book about connective tissue: histology, biochemistry, biophysics, and how it is clinically related to human health and disease. The book is based on extensive basic science and clinical research done by the author, Alfred Pischinger, and multitude of other European (largely German and Austrian) physicians and scientists in 1950's through 1980's. In other words, this is where European Medicine stood twenty years ago. Unfortunately, as of 2005, it remains a ground-breaking eye-opener for physicians in the United States.
The first part of the book (about 70 pages) is slow and boring at times as it describes histology, biochemistry, etc. Stay with it, it is worth your while - you will learn quite a few things that will make you respect connective tissue. It gets much better when the author begins to describe the clinical implications of his research.
Any physician involved with treatment of chronic conditions and pain and/or interested in alternative and complimentary medicine must read this book. One group of physicians may find it especially enlightening: if you practice acupuncture, this book gives you (or, at least, comes as close as possible to providing) a scientific explanation for acupuncture phenomenon. As I don't read German, it is impossible for me to check some of the important references given in the book, and I am not able to verify claims made by the author.
One drawback of the book is that the translation was not edited properly (if at all), and it shows: sentence structures are often awkward and sometimes hard to understand, but, again, it is still worth the effort to read and learn from this book.
Finally, it may be near impossible to find the book. If you, as I do, have access to an academic medical library, you can order this book via inter-library loan system (ILL) from National Library of Medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Matrix and matrix regulation
This is a long awaited english translation of the original German text.Pischinger has truely written a tour-de-forceonsystems based physiology. The books holistic philosophy stays in synch with much of German medical thought. It's an incredibly researched and thoughtful approach towards an alternative physiological paradigm. My only complaint is that the authorcovers too much ground without providing the necessary source material. Many areas are merely made reference to and washed over without supporting discussion, and given that most of the research is in untranslated German, verification and deeper technical review may be near impossible. However, it gives some major food for thought that isn't being taught in schools today and it's a must read for physicians, physiologists and medical researchers. ... Product Description
While some would view the holistic approach to treating illness and disease contrary to the wisdom of conventional medicine, quite the opposite is true in most cases. In fact, most conventional physicians view a patient with a desire to work to improve their overall health as refreshing.

A majority of holistic medical approaches can complement traditional treatments.

Holistic care means focusing not only on a specific sign or symptom, but working to treat the mind, body and spirit of any patient who is willing to seek answers for what ails them. Most holistic treatment options are based on nature, and include few chemicals that are foreign to the human body. Here are some ways that you can begin to integrate holistic medicine into your life.

Holistic care treats the whole person, rather than just specific areas of the body. The primary difference between holistic care and conventional medicine is that holistic practitioners try to use naturally occurring substances to treat illnesses and disease instead of manufactured chemicals. Additionally, there is a focus on alternative therapies including chiropractic care, acupuncture, massage and even psychotherapy when appropriate. Here are some things that you might not realize about the many holistic techniques available today.

Have you found yourself to be little more than a passive participant in your medical care? If so, you are definitely not alone. One alternative that will make you an active participant is holistic medicine.

With holistic medicine, care is centered on the individual and not just the results of lab tests. The belief that medical care must depend on the individual often seems lost in the realm of medicine. By selecting holistic care, you are taking control of your medical care and will find that your overall well-being improves. Here are some approaches that set holistic medical care apart.

Are you tired of your doctor telling you that the symptoms you are experiencing are just in your head? Well, it turns out that they could very well be right! This is not to say that every unexplained medical problem is an unresolved mental disorder. Instead, it is the idea that emotional issues can potentially lead to physical problems within the body. For this reason, the holistic approach includes treatments for both the mind and the body.

Holistic medicine is not mystical, and it is not mysterious. In fact, holistic medicine is much more real than many people realize. In order to increase the positive effects of medical treatment, it is necessary that the treating practitioner get to know the patient as an individual. Observation and discovery can often uncover potential problems before they begin and help the practitioner to address any specific problems experienced by the patient. Here are some of the ways that holistic care can benefit you.

Do you suffer from a chronic health problem, but you just can’t seem to find a treatment that works? You might be a good candidate for holistic medical care.

Believe it or not, there is a lot more to medical treatments than conventional medicine would have you believe. There are many forms of alternative medicine like homeopathic medications, massage therapy, aromatherapy and nutrition counseling. Each of these approaches focuses on you as an individual so that you can have your needs addressed in a way that is comfortable for you and that works to alleviate not only the symptoms, but the root cause of your problems. Here are some ideas to consider.

Holistic medical care is becoming a buzzword among thirty something's who are looking to play a more active role in maintaining good health. Gone are the days where an apple a day was the only way to stay healthy. Those who have started to enjoy the benefits of holistic medical care will tell you that there is much to be said for preventative care that keeps the mind, body and spirit in excellent condition.

Product Description
Principles of Holistic Medicine: Philosophy behind Quality of Life is a textbook in a series of books on holistic medicine and healthbased on the Danish Quality of Life Survey, where we asked 10,000 people about their quality of life (QOL). The results were quite surprising and forced us to recontemplate the following philosophical questions:

* What is quality of life, happiness, meaning in life?
* What is a human being?
* Do we need a new biology?
* Is the brain the seat of consciousness?
* How do we seize the meaning of life and by doing this, will we becoming well again?
* What are the key concepts of QOL?

The meaning of life is connectedness and development. It is about realizing every opportunity and potential in one's existence. And the opportunities have to be found and acknowledged. What do you find when you find yourself deepest down? You find your real self and your purpose in life. You realize that you are already a part of a larger totality. Antonovsky called it coherence. Maslow called it transcendence. Frankl called it meaning of life. We call it simply being.

To test if these philosphical questions were actually relevant for medicine we looked at the consequesces for patients being taught the QOL philosophy. Quite surprisingly we learned from our pilot studies with "QOL as medicine" that just by assimilating the basic concepts of the QOL philosophy presented in this series of papers, patients felt better and saw their lifes as more meaningful.

The improvement of personal philosophy of life seems to be the essence of holistic medicine and helping the patient to assume more responsibility. ... Read more
