2-0 out of 5 stars Could have been....
This cook book could have been good--I don't know because so many pages had been cut out of the used version I purchased. It was a real disappointment to buy something that was described as "like new" and then learn (too late) that so many recipes had been removed.I won't buy this way again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Original and Warm, but Dated
I must give this book high marks for originality and organization, and for thoroughness without repetition. In addition, the book transmits a genuine warmth of Jewish feeling. Harriet Roth does not care to be hip, ironic or vegan. She is just trying to get good-tasting Jewish food on the table with a minimum of cholesterol and sodium. I would like to visit Harriet Roth's kitchen and chat with her while she cooks.

Unfortunately, some of the recipes recall a more innocent time of free use of sugar and processed foods. In addition, the heavy use of nonfat dairy may put off some people (although, in fairness, it is hard to make traditional dairy food without dairy). Most of the recipes are for groups of 6 or more, and cannot be scaled down.

I like this book, but I do not use it much.

4-0 out of 5 stars very good reference for jewish company cooking
I needed a reference for cooking for some Jewish friends....they loved it.I am not Jewish myself but, have prepared some of the recipes for my family and they were very good.I can't imagine I am the best person to ask, but anyway, I enjoyed this cookbook and it's recipes were well-recieved by all. ... Product Description
Holidays are a time for family and friends to gather for mouthwatering meals, but catering to every guest's dietary requirements can be a challenge. The menus in The Healthy Hedonist Holidays will entice every guest -- vegetarian, semi-vegetarian, carnivores, omnivores who can't eat dairy, and people who just love good food -- with delicious, satisfying "flexitarian" meals.

Featuring fresh seasonal ingredients, whole grains, natural sugars, and creative seasonings, these flavorful feasts will leave guests feeling satisfied -- without the guilt that usually accompanies holiday indulgence. Each menu offers both a vegetarian and fish or poultry main course, and a range of side dishes, appetizers, and desserts that can be used in any combination to accommodate individual tastes.

Myra Kornfeld's recipes honor America's diverse cultural and ethnic heritage. Even if you're not of Chinese descent, sit down to Sesame Noodles with Wilted Nappa Cabbage and Crispy Five-Spice Tofu with Black Bean Sauce. The traditional flavors of Thanksgiving take on a southwestern flair with a maple sugar-brined turkey accompanied by Mole Gravy with Dried Plums and Ancho Chiles. The Feast of Eid al Fitr explores the flavors of Turkey and Morocco with Chicken Breasts Stuffed with Onions, Cinnamon, Almonds, and Cherries, and Semolina Walnut Cake with Macerated Oranges. A Passover dinner offers herb-flecked matzo balls in a vibrant green spinach soup and a fish terrine studded with asparagus. Christmas dinner turns to the shores of Italy for inspiration with Flounder Roll-ups with Pistachio Pesto and Squash-Portobello Lasagna.

With sections on ingredients, techniques, and a cooking plan for each menu, The Healthy Hedonist Holidays is a book to use, to give, and to savor, over and over again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ethnic Holiday Feasts
The Healthy Hedonist Holidays is an inspiration! I opened this book and immediately felt inspired to cook.In her latest book, Myra Kornfeld demonstrates a passion for fresh foods and quality ingredients. Celebrating our favorite holidays, this book features simple to follow recipes packed with authentic flavors from all over the world. The book is well organized into Holiday Menus that can easily be for a feast, or for just a weeknight meal that will impress anyone that sits at your table.

What is most impressive, is that the recipes work without any tweaking. I have made several recipes from the book and each one has come out tasting fantastic and looking beautiful. Even though I tend to prefer savory foods, the first recipe that I made was the Double Chocolate Cloud Cookies. I took them to the office and everyone inhaled them as if they were clouds! While we are on the subject of dessert, the Truffles are yummy and the Belgian Brownies are more than a little sinful.

Being a vegetarian, I really like that each of the menus has a main dish that is either Vegan or Vegetarian. The Golden Squash and Chickpea Soup with Roasted Chickpea Nuts is delicious with balancing flavors of spicy ginger and clean lemon, perfect for a cool autumn supper. The best Chickpea recipe I have ever tasted is the Charmoula Chickpea Strudel and it is so easy. It also freezes well. For a weekday brunch, I prepared the Cheese Pancakes with Zucchini and Walnuts. They are light and airy, almost like a soufflé. Everyone wanted more!

I recently returned from Mexico and needed a "South of the Border" fix. I made the Tortilla Soup, and the Asparagus Quesadillas with Red Chile Paste and the flavors were authentically recreated. I was back in the sun!

I read cookbooks like novels. I highly recommend actually reading this one from front to back. You will glean so much information about cooking techniques, ethnic flavors, andthe role food plays in the celebration of our holidays through taste, smells and memory.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Cooking with and for Kids!
Because of the way this cookbook is organized, it is easy to gather ingredients in advance, and the recipes are fast and easy to make. And because holiday foods are special and pretty, they are somehow extremely appealing to children to eat!

My five year old son and I made the Potato Latkes (light and easy with lots of carrots in the mix) and the Cheese Pancakes with Zucchini and Walnuts (scrumptious). He had a good time mixing the potatoes and forming them into small patties for cooking. The mama in me liked the fact of the "hidden" veggies that he wolfed down happily. We made the Mulled Cider-Cranberry Applesauce which my son informed me was "way better" than store bought applesauce: No Kidding! And it was so pretty!

The Pierogis were fun to make together, too, and the dill was a great addition to the Dilled Potato Cheese Pierogis. I love it that they can be made ahead and frozen. I doubled the recipe and filled the freezer with meal-sized bags of them.

The recipes are fantastic, but maybe the best thing about the book is the writing about the holidays inbetween. I love it that I can cook this food with my son, and also talk with him about who makes the same kind of food, and why and what it means to them. It makes the world seem a lot smaller, which can't be a bad thing in these troubled times.

We are looking forward to making the Pomegranate Chicken with Walnuts for Thanksgiving. Thank you, Myra Kornfeld, for another fantastic cookbook!

5-0 out of 5 stars Guides you every step of the way!
I received Healthy Hedonist Holidays as a gift from a friend who's a professional chef. She assured me this is one cookbook I'll want to use over and over again. At first, I was skeptical, (polite of course, but skeptical) but she was so right!

Here's what I love about this book:

1) It's a delicous read; just the titles of these international recipes are enough to send me to an Overeaters Anonymous meeting.

2)Theseobviously well-tested dishes makes me look like a much more sophisticated cook than I am. Example: Last Saturday night, I made the posh-looking Sunflower-crusted Salmon Pinwheels with Watercress Pesto, from the St. Patrick's Day menu ("Wow" factor: ten) My husband swears he's never seen his Mom look so blissed out. And she's not even Irish!

3)Thanks to this festive book, I don't have to stress over what to give for the holidays this year! I'm ordering gift-wrapped copies of Healthy Hedonist Holidays for everyone who adores exquisite food, year round. (And that's everyone on my list!)

5-0 out of 5 stars International Flavors and Versatile Feasts
Just when I'd begun feeling the need to refresh my culinary repertory, Healthy Hedonist Holidays shows up on the bookshelves! Having made extensive use of the recipes in Myra Kornfeld's two prior cookbooks, "The Voluptuous Vegan" and "The Healthy Hedonist", I dove with excitement into this latest publication brimming with international flavors and time-honored, festive traditions. As with her prior cookbooks, fresh, natural and seasonal ingredients take center stage. It's full of cooking tips and invaluable prep notes that allow for advance cooking. Not only has Myra Kornfeld planned your holiday meal for you, but then goes on to lay out the cooking schedule. What's even better is you can make these exotic holiday dishes for dinner on weekdays or weekends, too.I do. The Pomegranate Chicken with Walnuts is already a favorite.I used all chicken thighs and dredged them in spelt flour. The pomegranate molasses gave the chicken outrageous flavor and the thighs came out mouth-wateringly tender, reminiscent of a meal I enjoyed in Marrakech.Same goes for the Breast of Duck with Port-Cherry Sauce. It looks impressive and yet you can make both the sauce and duck in an hour.I've already made both dishes a couple of times and everyone loved them. And the Baby Bok Choy Braised with Mustard Greens and Black Mushrooms is the way to eat greens. I'm looking forward to exploring many more of the recipes in this new book, but also still recommend some super favorites of mine from Myra's 2005 "Healthy Hedonist": Orange-Glazed Flounder with Watercress: flounder doesn't get better than this. Red Snapper Provencale, fabulous. The Wild Rice with Porcini Mushrooms, Pecans, and Dried Cranberries is a great Thanksgiving Day dish. Every salsa, sauce and chutney in that book can be mixed and matched with all sorts of meals making for great variety. The soups are luscious and the recipes work without the need for adjustments: Butternut Squash Soup with Crispy Shallots and Sage! Moroccan Chickpea Soup! White Bean and Spinach Soup with Rosemary!Anyhow, obviously I've cooked enough of this author's recipes to whole-heartedly encourage everyone to explore them on their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heavenly Roasted Banana-Chocolate Sauce!
I already love Myra Kornfeld's previous cookbooks and was excited to receive this one.I just had to start with the Chocolate Hazelnut Sandwich Cookies and had to laugh when I read at the end of the recipe that they would keep for two weeks at room temperature.Good luck keeping yourself away from those delightful treats for two weeks! But I do appreciate that the instructions include such useful information.

The book is organized by holidays that range from Ramadan to Kwanzaa to the Fourth of July, and includes recipes inspired by many different cultures and ethnicities. Each holiday menu contains dishes that perfectly go together and features a vegetarian main course, as well as either a fish or a chicken dish. Each section begins with a little history about the holiday.Particularly useful are the "Cook's Notes," which tell you how far in advance you can prepare each item.Dishes that freeze well, can be made several weeks in advance, others can be made a few days ahead - great for keeping last minute preparations to a minimum.

But don't wait for the holidays to use this book.I found a halibut recipe on the Easter menu easy enough for a weeknight dinner.Besides the onion, there was only one vegetable to chop. And although I couldn't get halibut and used cod instead, the dish was extraordinarily flavorful and delicious. We ended up serving it with the roasted cauliflower dish from the festive New Year's Eve Menu, which just needed to be reheated, and some crusty bread. It was a veritable feast for a weeknight. The Sesame Noodles with Wilted Napa Cabbage from the Chinese New Year is another easy, yet flavorful dish. And it took less than 25 minutes to prepare.I can't wait to try the Crispy Five-Spice Tofu with Black Bean Sauce as soon as I can get the fermented black beans (resources for ingredients that may not be readily available can be found in the back of the book). The Three-Sisters Polenta Casserole from the Thanksgiving menu, which is inspired by Southwestern and Native American flavors, was another winner for a weeknight at our house.Although it is a little more involved, it can be made ahead and reheated.Scoring the top layer of the polenta before reheating is key - it looks so beautiful when it comes out of the oven! And next time we have meat-eating guests for Thanksgiving, Myra Kornfeld's recipe for the Maple Sugar-Brined Southwestern-Style Turkey will be the one I'll turn to, for sure.

The sweets are not your ordinary desserts.Besides the cookies, I've had a chance to make the Coconut Crème Caramel with Roasted Banana-Chocolate Sauce. This was easy to make, and the sauce turned out so heavenly that I had a hard time restraining myself from just sipping it like hot chocolate while the custard cups were chilling in the refrigerator. The Almond-Orange Fortune Cookies sound like they could be a real project. But I like the idea of being able to write my own messages for my guests.

I couldn't find anything to criticize about this book.It is a unique and invaluable resource if you are interested in delighting your guests with an unforgettable holiday feast. Some of the dishes are more involved than others - after all, the book is about cooking for celebrations. But if you're just looking for new inspiration for every day dishes, this book can be a real treasure as well. You can't go wrong with recipes featuring seasonal ingredients while emphasizing flavor. And Myra Kornfeld succeeds beautifully in creating these recipes.I give this excellent book five stars without reservation. ... Product Description
Recipes and food ideas give a variety of food experiences appropriate for various age groups. Whether you are a parent, grandparent, care-giver, teacher, or young cook, this book is meant to inspire you to enjoy cooking together.

Cooking with children is a hands-on activity that helps to teach, to create, and to help in their appreciation of the gift of food. What better time is there to set the stage for working with, and enjoying, food than during the early years?

Each season features food appropriate for that time of year. It begins with back to school ideas for breakfasts, lunches, and snacks using food from the garden's bounty, whether one's own, farmer's market, or store bought bounty, with ample Halloween pumpkin and apple recipes. Thanksgiving and holiday food ideas are plentiful. Multicultural celebration holiday recipes and activities are included, as well as food suggestions for New Year's open house. Food ideas for Valentine's Day, Presidents' Day, St. Patrick's Day, April Fools' Day, Easter, and Mothers' and Fathers' Day and 4th of July are some of the spring and summer holidays that are featured. Tucked away between its recipes are bits of history and culture, plus many suggestions for seasonal activities. Some of these include making placemats out of fall leaves, discussing holiday customs from different countries, planting a vegetable in a garden or clay pot, and arranging summer flowers for a centerpiece. There are many fun ideas for serving, decorating, and celebrating.

This book emphasizes many valuable life skills such as: following directions; practicing safety and proper food handling methods; establishing meaningful traditions that enrich family life; fostering cooperation and a willingness to share; practicing good table manners; preparing and tasting food from other cultures; and helping children enjoy preparing food while learning about the background of the food and the part food plays in various traditions and holidays. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for children! So much more than recipes!
This book is so interesting, and I even learned things about foods that I didn't know! I was looking for ideas for holidays, especially with Summer just around the corner. This book helps kids not only by explaining foods, but also the history behind using certain foods for certain holidays. It is overall a very good book, and I would recommend it to any parent whose children are interested in helping with the cooking!

5-0 out of 5 stars Food and Fun with Children in the Kitchen
Amy Houts has given us a guidebook for involving our children in cooking and preparing food. The book provides hands-on activities to help teach children be grateful for the marvelous gift of food.

The book provides a variety of mouth watering recipes, instructions, and valuable background information on the origin of holidays, customs, and family tradition.Material is arranged in order of the four seasons.Within each season the author also considers weather, holidays, location, harvest, and family traditions.

I especially appreciated the pointers and tips on a variety of subjects including: safety in the kitchen, table manners, back to school breakfast ideas, lunch box ideas, a cookie baking exchange party, simple holiday gifts from the kitchen, creating invitations and telephone etiquette when planning an event, guidelines for athletes, and many more.

The book is particularly timely in this day when there is a national concern for the rising problem of obesity among children. The suggestions in this book offer an alternative to fast food diets, and encourage nutritional awareness among family members. Another positive result of these activities is the quality time parent spends with their child in accomplishing meaningful tasks together.

"Cooking Around the Calendar with Kids" has received the `Book Achievement Merit Award' from the Midwest Independent Publishing Association and is highly acclaimed by experts in the field of child development, children's nutrition, and children's literature. This is an excellent book for parents, grandparents, and a good choice for gift giving on any special occasion.

5-0 out of 5 stars 2004 Writers Notes Book Award Winner
Recent statistics say that the nuclear fam-ily rarely shares meals, but we all have to eat, don't we? Why not get the kids involved in the meal preparation? Houts covers the seasons with simple and fun recipes that turn every day into a holiday celebration, including nutrition, food presentation, and kitchen safety.

5-0 out of 5 stars "So Much More Than A Cookbook"
"So Much More Than A Cookbook", a statement on the back cover of "Cooking Around the Calendar With Kids", is an accurate description of this delightful source book. The introduction explains the reasons for our food choices including weather, holidays, location, harvest times, and family traditions. The author uses the simple means of cooking to incorporate a variety of important skills for children. These skills range from learning about healthy eating, kitchen safety, sports nutrition and the changing seasons to spending quality time with family members (including dad!). Children are taught to give of themselves (while also raising self esteem) by making simple holiday food gifts such as honey butter, spice mix, soup mix, or chocolate chip cookies in a jar. Each page is 'jam packed' with simple, healthy recipes and wonderful ideas. Product Description
As each major holiday approaches, those watching their waistlines view the coming celebration with dread as another occasion to blow their diets. But delicious traditional meals need not ruin healthy habits. Now anyone can create flavorful holiday meals that perfectly reflect the holiday spirit but are lower in fat, salt, and sugar.

Sandra Woodruff, completely reinventing her bestselling cookbook (previously titled Fat-Free Holiday Recipes), shares more than two hundred new recipes for celebrations. In Light and Easy Holiday Cooking, Woodruff introduces a variety of ingredients that lighten up holiday fare without sacrificing flavor. She includes creative recipes for tempting hot and cold hors d'oeurves and beverages, complete holiday menus for twelve traditional holidays and celebrations, and guilt-free desserts and sweet treats. Each menu is accompanied by plan-ahead strategies to help the reader avoid a last-minute rush. Amazon.com Review
Sandra Woodruff, celebrated cookbook author and registered dietician, believes that it is possible to eat guilt-free on holidays and everyday throughout the year. No need for post-holiday dieting, because the recipes in Light and Healthy Holiday Cooking are simple and smart variations of all the traditional favorites, with flavorful ingredient substitutions that won't compromise taste or texture. Woodruff suggests easy replacements of low- or nonfat dairy products or mayonnaise for the full-fat ingredients. She calls for fruit juice rather than white processed sugar to sweeten desserts, and even proffers honey as a healthier alternative. The nutritional totals at the end of each recipe make it easy to count calorie and fat intake so you know where you stand--or what you stand to gain.

Many of Woodruff's recipe-altering ideas are suggestions you've probably heard before but not always taken seriously. She often compares the fat and calorie counts of the traditional favorites to her alternatives, and it serves as a wake-up call for how easy it is to overconsume and eat less than healthily. The recipes are organized by holidays, including major religious observances, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Halloween, and more. So go ahead and enjoy the Triple Fudge Torte (yes, it's in there) without regret, and use this book as your guide to smarter eating and cooking everyday. --Teresa Simanton ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is why I'm happy to be vegan!
My moms going out of town this weekend so we had an early Rosh Hashana meal last night. We made the whole menu except that we made her apple pie for dessert bc we had 9 apples in the house. O-M-G. My mom was the only Jew at the table and I was the only no-added-fat-vegan and EVERYONE loved the food! My boyfriend had seconds of the cabbage dish even though he "hates" cabbage! haha...and the meal went together very well! Her sour cream was fantastic and really brought all the flavors of each dish together. And the meal was to die for and, honestly, way cheaper than the meat-counterpart would have been for making that huge amount of food. FYI: the CHALLAH BREAD WAS KILLER! It was good plain, with honey or with sliced fruit on top. And the apple pie (in her other cook book) was freakin awesome. It's a childhood favorite dessert of mine. It was sooooooooo good. And I really liked the pastry dough, which I was afraid of having. What a good meal! I had it ALL again for breakfast this morning ;) ahahahahha...my oatmeal will have to wait for another day.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this cookbook!
I am not a "good" cook and I don't know a lot of good meatless meals.... if your the same then this book is for you!LOVE IT!

The only thing I have to say is hide the tofu in the frig!People have tofu issues!!!! I NEVER tell anyone it's meatless or has tofu in it and they eat everything on their plate. If they know or see it has tofu they won't eat it.What they don't know won't hurt them!

My Mom and Dad are meat freaks. Everything they eat is breaded, deep fried and fatty.I have made several meals from this book and the others by the same author and they have no idea. They leave saying everything was GREAT!Ha ha ha....if they only knew!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas for holiday meals
Often the most difficult meals for coming up with ideas are those for the holidays, especially when you are having non-vegan guests. This book is a great solution, not only for tasty creations that most everyone will like, but meals that are attractive and good alternatives to those that contain meat.I've made many of the recipes in this book and have never had a complaint on any of them. They taste good, presentation is great and everyone asks for seconds.

The other nice thing is that just because it's vegetarian, it doesn't contain a lot of high calorie ingredients. You can have a festive meal, knowing that its healthy. The recipe portions are large enough that nobody will walk away from the table hungry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of Both Worlds
The Almost No-Fat Holiday Cookbook: Festive Vegetarian Recipes

This is one of the BEST cookbooks I've come across in a long time! I am transitioning to a vegan diet (while trying to lose weight) and this cookbook is contains 100% vegan recipes, all with 1g of fat or less--the best of both worlds!

When I first got the book, I started putting Post-It flags on the recipes I wanted to try, but soon found that nearly every page then had a Post-It!

So far I've made my own vegan soy "sausage", soy "chorizo", BBQ "nuggets" and a fat-free hummus. I can't wait to try the rest! PS: Don't let the "holiday" in the title fool you: these aren't just "Christmas" recipes: there are recipes for Eid, Passover, Chinese New Year, etc.--pretty much for ANY time of the year!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for everyday cooking
Grogan's book interested me when I realized that my roasted vegetable dishes and other items were adding too much fat in my diet.I have since tried a few recipes and absolutely loved them! They are creative; they work; and they are healthy.I don't necessarily like the inclusion of textured vegetable protein, but I can use tempeh and other items instead. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "Fat-Free and Taste Good Too"
Great book good pictures and easy to follow instructions, something to cook for each season.

1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of money
If you know how to purchase fat free products like sour cream, then you certainly don't need this very boring and uninspired cookbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great literature to really "chew on . . ."
I may soon be able to contradict my favorite coffee mug that sports the message "Skinny cooks can't be trusted."In "Fat-Free Holiday Recipes" I bought through Amazon, Sandra Woodruff, RD, did a fabulous job of creating good-tasting, fat-free replicas of unhealthy foods that have made our holidays "special" most of our lives. She offers menus, with easy to follow recipes that include basic nutritional information, clearly delineated.Best of all the ingredients resemble cooking instead of "lab experiments" that call for expensive, exotic ingredients my grocer never heard of.(I'd rather spend my time cooking and eating delicious food that searching far and wide for eye of newt that "makes all the difference.")John Winchek's very droll illustrations had me chuckling right away but John Strange's photography had me visibly drooling down my chin and checking for ingredients without delay. Some cookbooks are "great literature," but this one is also a superb guide to help stave-off "deprivation" 365 days per year, no matter what "the doctor orders."

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent and beautiful addition to your cookbook shelf
This book is so useful.Every recipie lists the fiber, calories, and fat content. The pictures are beautiful and the recipies I've made have all been delicious.Creative use of herbs and seasoning and alternateingredients take the place of fat.The roast turkey with a variety ofstuffings is great.I don't cook turkey any other way now. ... Product Description

At last -- the Jewish holidays transformed into exquisite celebrations, graced with sublime chic and elegant ease for the contemporary Jewish reader. Combining the flair of Martha Stewart with the warmth and accessibility of a delightful neighbor, Rita Milos Brownstein breathes new life into traditional Jewish holiday celebrations.

Entertaining in high style creates marvelous holiday memories for your family, your friends, and yourself. For each of the ten major holidays, Brownstein offers suggestions for creative projects that will bring the whole family together and mouth-watering menus that make it effortless to prepare festivities of true material and spiritual splendor. With more than 85 full-color photographs and easy-to-follow step-by-step illustrations, this captivating book will motivate you to explore your Jewish heritage and use your imagination to make it your own.

Jewish Holiday Style is packed with dazzling and inspiring ideas. For Rosh Hashanah, host a honey-tasting party to celebrate the sweetness of a new year. If you love the ocean, observe Sukkot in a sukkah with a seaside motif -- even if you live in the cornfields of the Midwest. Make your own Chanukah menorahs -- try a simple cruse of oil that reflects the miracle of the oil in the Holy Temple, or an elaborate metalworked candelabra that is sure to become a family heirloom. For the Passover table, create personalized pillows for your guests, which.will allow them to recline like the royalty of old while you serve a lavish yet simple-to-prepare feast.

As part of this eye-opening tour through the Jewish calendar, Brownstein also highlights the historical origins and religious importance of each major holiday with a delightful essay that brings ancient rituals into the modern day. Think of the fast of Yom Kippur, for instance, as "a day spa for the soul...the too rare opportunity to get in touch with the things that really matter." Purim is "the definitive holiday of joy and merriment," commemorating a bright moment in the often somber history of the Jewish people. On Shabbat, "appreciate that you are joining the wave of Jews who are kindling their candles as the sun falls, working its way around the world."

At once a handbook of creative ideas and a primer on the spiritual significance of the Jewish holidays, Jewish Holiday Style is the first lifestyle book to address these all-important rituals and ceremonies, an elegantly designed volume that blends sensational crafts and delectable cooking with the richness of Judaism's 3,300-year-old tradition. Bursting with fresh ideas and exciting new looks, here, finally, is the book you've been waiting for. Let the holiday celebrations begin!Amazon.com Review
"In Judaism, since the spiritual and the physical are intimately connected, each has the power to enhance and infuse vitality into the other, creating a divine partnership. This concept of beauty and spirituality is most attainable during the Jewish holidays." So writes Rita Milos Brownstein, in the introduction to Jewish Holiday Style, a Martha Stewart-esque treatment of the Jewish holy days. The book is a colorful step-by-step guide to making the highlights of the Jewish calendar as chic and elegant as they can be. Although Brownstein sometimes gets carried away with her rhetoric (Yom Kippur becomes "a day spa for the soul"), her ideas and instructions (such as making your own Chanukah menorah, or celebrating Rosh Hashanah by tasting various honeys) will add some zest to the oldest Jewish traditions. And even Brownstein's excesses have at least this to redeem them: they always encourage the biblical virtue of hospitality. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Delicious recipes...loaded with color photos..great cookbook!
I turn to this cookbook often, not just for the holidays. The recipes are delicious and this is one of those highly visual books loaded with color photos. The matzo ball soup makes the best chicken soup I've ever had. I make it with variations (barley, wild rice) every month. I love this book and am delighted to have found Rita Brownstein. I hope she writes more books. I'll be waiting hopefully.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly inspiring, a little cheesy.
I've turned to this book again and again for Jewish holiday celebrations, and it often has lovely ideas.Just as often, some of them strike me as rather improbable and silly. On the plus side, the sukkahs she describes making are lovely interpretations of the idea, but on the minus side, trying to follow her directions to actually construct one will make you crazy.BELIEVE ME.I've used some of her ideas for Rosh Hashanah cards and been pleased with the results, but the Purim costumes and mishloach manot baskets mostly seem silly. And make your own journal for Yom Kippur?I don't know, I'm always way too busy to mess with something like that. Many of her recipes are surprisingly delicious, especially her orange-chocolate hamantaschen and the raspberry linzer-torte hamantaschen...YUM!So while it's not always consistent, I am glad to have it in my library nonetheless.

5-0 out of 5 stars adds enjoyment to the holidays
great book for the holidays added alot of fun and meaning to our celebrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jewish Holiday Style...
I bought this book for myself, and five more copies for my friends and family. This passover I am planning on making three matzah-cover vases formy pesach table, and I'm also going to have a glass-square sedar plate. These stylish things are chic and inexpensive, plus they look great withany room or setting. The book itself has more knowledge than any otherstyle book: usually books are either one or the other. Is Ms. Brownsteinplanning on writing any books in the future?

I had seen this book at a friends house and spent two hours flipping through it.Came home and logged onto Amazon to find it and ordered it immediately.Thank you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sub-Par
I enjoy a good holiday cookbook, but I was disappointed with this one. The recipes are a little too plain... The selection not particularly holiday orientated. The pictures are few and far-between...And the recipe titles a bit too generic. Overall, this cookbook left me with a 'Ho Humm' response.

If you like plain food, and generic recipes without a holiday feel pick up this book... In my opinion this book could benefit from a graphic re-design and a more carefully selected group of recipes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Glorious Holiday Recipes Caters to Both Christians and Jews
Texans are a proud lot. They pride themselves on their cuisine, which is really not Southwestern and definitely not Southern, as the second largest state has diverse traditions, cultures and cuisine, and some absolutelydelicious food.

Here's a wonderful book with glorious recipes forThanksgiving, Christmas, Chanukah and New Year's.Beautiful photographs, cooking tips, menu ideas and sidebars quoting selected family traditionsgive the book a warm, personal touch. It's a book to read and enjoy evenif you're not the one doing the cooking.

Best of all, most recipes areeasy. You'll learn how to roast, smoke and deep-fry turkey along withrecipes for making all the trimmings -- from Texas corn bread dressing toDorothy's no-fail giblet gravy, even the ubiquitous green bean casseroleall the way down to pumpkin, pecan and sweet potato pie.

Griffith's bookcaters to ethnicities. There's a recipe for Tex-Mex hot tamales and flanfor the Latino community as well as potato latkes, sweet noodle kugel andrugelach for the Jewish faith. But you certainly don't have to be Hispanicor Jewish to try these recipes -- all tested and ready for becoming yourown traditions, too.

There's even a section on making homemade foodgifts, a grand way to say "happy holidays" to friends andrelatives with a personal touch.Spicy pecans, Lone Star caviar and Texastrash are among the festive recipes.

Don't miss this book. It's theperfect companion for the holidays. ... Read more
