A comprehensive text that covers all aspects of heart failure. Needs a new edition as quite a bit of new data has emerged to modify AHA/ACC guidelines for heart failure. Good reference for those planning to take the Advanced Heart Failure/Transplant boards this year. Its main competitor is UpToDate; I am unaware of a similar text. ... Read more

Reissued with a new look, this book offers the complete reference guide to what doctors know about heart disease and how to prevent it.Amazon.com Review
Dr. Kwiterovich has seen things that are painful to even readabout, things like young adults with orange protrusions the size ofbaseballs growing on their elbows because of super-high cholesterollevels. But from such experiences at the extremes, he has come tounderstand heart disease as few others do. The Johns HopkinsComplete Guide is indispensable for people who are at risk ofearly heart attack: people with high cholesterol levels, a familyhistory of early deaths from heart disease, sedentary lives, and/orbad health habits such as smoking. Even if you have no reason to thinkyou're in that club, you may find the chapters on diet and nutritionfascinating, especially with all the mythology circulating about themagic of fish oils (he's for eating fish, against fish-oilsupplements). But if you do have heart-disease risk factors, you'llfind crucial information here: not only thorough explanations of theconnection between cholesterol and heart attacks, but also acholesterol-lowering diet with recipes. --Lou Schuler ... Product Description
Finally, a resource that takes full advantage of modern technology. In a major advance for pediatric cardiology, this text/DVD set covers ultrasound physics; laboratory set-up; a protocol for a standard pediatric echocardiogram; quantitative methods of echocardiographic evaluation, including assessment of diastolic function; in-depth coverage of congenital cardiovascular malformations; acquired pediatric heart disease; and topics of special interest, such as 3D echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, and fetal echocardiography.

Amazon-Exclusive Q&A with Author Wyman Lai

Tell us a little bit about your book, who is it aimed at and how will it help them?
This book is a comprehensive textbook of pediatric echocardiography. It covers the latest advances in ultrasound imaging of the heart in children, and also deals with congenital heart disease in fetuses and adults. The textbook is aimed at those who practice and teach pediatric and congenital echocardiography. It provides a comprehensive, integrated approach to pediatric cardiac ultrasound and includes information about the anatomy, pathophysiology, and goals of the echocardiographic examination for each lesion before, during, and after treatment.

What inspired you to write the book?
We, the editors, saw a great need for an updated reference textbook for our trainees and for our colleagues and their trainees. It has been over a decade since the release of the last comprehensive textbook on this topic.

What do you hope readers will get out of it?
The chapters are written by experts throughout North American and Europe. Despite the wide geographic distribution of the authors, a consistent and thorough approach to pediatric echocardiography is provided. The readers will also have a DVD with hundreds of examples of key anatomic and functional issues mentioned in the text

What is different about your book from others in the field?
Its main attraction is that it is recently released and incorporates the latest technologies. It provides a perspective from authors drawn from most of the major pediatric cardiology centers on two continents. It is also the first comprehensive textbook to provide illustrative video clips, which greatly improve the readers’ ability to understand the information in the text and still figures.

What is your day job?
I run a non-invasive pediatric cardiology imaging laboratory at an academic medical center.

How did you get into this line of work?
I like taking care of children, and I enjoy the challenge of diagnosing and treating congenital heart disease. I have had great role models who were devoted to their patients but who also loved to teach.

What would you be if you were not a doctor?
I’d do something else that requires puzzle solving. Perhaps I’d be an engineer or an architect.

And finally, did you enjoy writing this book, and are you planning any others?
It was fun to work with my co-editors and all the authors. Everyone was willing to squeeze in this work despite being already incredibly busy. We’d like to update the textbook periodically in order to keep it relevant and on the cutting edge. Future editions should be more electronically based and accessible to readers over the internet.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for the pediatric echocardiographer
This is a truly exelent book, a lot of precise information in a relatively small space. The format of each section is the same through-out, and makes it fairly easy to find the relevant information. The first chapters, on equipment, standards and the ewxamination is also of a high standard. While I don't agree on every statement everywhere the chapters are well referenced and the pertinent points clearly made so this book should be a good fundament for further discussions in the echo labs.

If you are going to by just one book on this subject, this should be it. ... Read more

Would you like to save yourself the indignity, inconvenience and foul taste of modern diet fads? Are you sick and tired of frittering away your money on heart medications that leave you feeling more wretched than ever?Do you spend frequent, precious hours jogging or pounding away at the gym?And despite all of this effort, are you still fatter and weaker than you want to be?

Then it’s time to abandon the Modern Gospel of low-fat food and long-duration exercise as a path to heart health. We need the very opposite, says Al Sears, M.D. in The Doctor’s Heart Cure.According to Dr. Sears, heart disease continues to be America’s biggest killer – and obesity has reached epidemic proportions – because of the fad for low-fat diets and despite aerobics.

Your heart’s salvation lies in reengineering the diet and exercise habits of our hunter-gatherer ancestors to fit our modern culture. What does this entail? To build a strong and resilient heart, says Dr. Sears, engage in brief, explosive bouts of intense exercise. Consume a diet rich in high quality fat, pasture-fed meat, free-range dairy, wild-caught fish and liberal helpings of low-glycemic fruits and vegetables. Avoid grain-based starches as best you can. And take appropriate supplements to counteract the nutritional deficiencies of modern produce.

As Director of The Center for Health and Wellness, an integrative medicine and anti-aging clinic in south Florida, Dr. Sears has used this plan to help more than 15,000 patients successfully reverse heart disease, build stronger hearts, manage their weight and abandon their heart medications. In The Doctor’s Heart Cure, for the first time, Dr. Sears reveals his entire, proven program, so you too can safely build an impregnable heart.

The Information is this book will OPEN anyones eyes...Dr. Sears gives information most Doctors don't understand-and sometimes dont want to understand-because they are to conditioned to think otherwise-...Bottom line is traditional healthcare...and traditional "Heart care" and exercise- fall short ...WHY ?...read this book...The Information (Research) in this book does NOT come from Dr. Sears..he is simply writing about it (Thankfully)--Although -he does offer info on how this research benefits his patients..this information and research has been around for decades,...DECADES people !...The real question is not "Does this information work "..but--"Why don't MORE doctors know about this ??" ...Harvard School of medicine has KNOWN about this information for years..and has research to PROVE it....Dr. Sears has just written a book about it..and tells you WHY it works with his patients...The Supplements are nutritional supplements(Added to diet)...He explains what is most important to take and WHY...Is he anti-Drug ? NO !!..he Knows drugs can and do save lives...But when a person's body is out of Crisis..How do they go about rebuilding it ?...and WHY ...Dr. Sears is against the abuse of Pharma Drugs...which is all to common in our Healthcare System...The information in this book is USED in other countries and has been FOR YEARS !( ex. 3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
I bought this book because it was mentioned in one of my mothers many (but very interesting) natural health newsletters. I'm working my way through but personally dont typically read this type of information and am finding it hard to get through all the "study" work. But continue to go through it as I am in strong agreement with the over all summary of the book written in the natural health newsletter which was a large amount of exercise is actually stressful to the body and produces the same chemical reaction in the body as stress. By adding a small amount of exercise each day that is equal to approximately the same amount of "natural" exercise we would get if we were not sitting at our desks all day is truly what the body needs to work properly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information

4-0 out of 5 stars The story of the blind man retold
There are hundreds of books on Amazon about heart disease as well as stress reduction and the relaxation response. Some, like Dean Ornish's, are quite comprehensive and integrative in their approach to the problem.Others are overly narrow, stressing just one of the usual three legs of the tripod of diet, exercise, and stress. Then there are books that zoom in on one narrow aspect of their already narrow approach (the 2 currently most popular books concentrate on diet, though Esselstyne's "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease" emphasizes abstinence from all fats, dairy, even fish and flax while Sinatra's "Reverse Heart Disease Now"-- with its advocation of CoQ10 and numerous non-prescription vitamins--comes close to making a pill junkie out of the afflicted).

It's a little like the old Indian tale of the blind men who are asked to determine the precise nature of an elephant by feeling it--each coming to a valid but necessarily limited and partial conclusion.Jennings and Kennedy's book acknowledges all three legs of the tripod but emphasizes stress reduction through exercise, relaxation, guided imagery and a simple breathing technique. To readers familiar with Herbert Benson's relaxation response and the numerous books it has spawned, this will be familiar ground. No doubt even readers without a representative collection of heart books are likely to "speed read" all of the statistics and anecdotal examples that the authors have collected in order to substantiate the claim that their approach is proven and useful and to "justify" a book devoted to a few basic techniques--a 15-minute cure--that may already be common wisdom to many readers.

Still, a book with a highly marketable title and hyperbolic sub-title(the sick are often as impatient and anxious for a quick read and simple and complete cure as the healthy) is unlikely to mislead those readers who choose to pick it up.Familiar and repetitive some of the information may be, but books such as this have a way of being read and then forgotten.Like the Sunday sermon, even the reader who is familiar with the "message" needs to be reminded of it from time to time, the greater the number of doctors, specialists, preachers, cheer-leaders the better. So in one sense it's good, especially for those of us who have lapsed in our programs and ourformer good intentions, that books on the subject of heart disease and lifestyle changes keep appearing.

The book is easily recommendable, and would make a good Kindle download (though some of us might wish that the price were reduced by another 20% for such a comparatively fast read). The advice is well-taken, the exercises within the reach of virtually everyone, and, unlike some books promoting mega-doses of arginine and other exotic chemicals, vitamins and herbs, this one cannot possibly do the reader who follows its prescriptions any harm.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent story telling to make a point of better living
The authors do a tremendous job of describing how our heart works and what to do to keep it working at maximum.Very interesting.

1-0 out of 5 stars A 15 Minute Walk would be better
I found this book to be disappointing.I read it, tried the exercises, and found myself frustrated because I really wanted to feel de-stressed...but wasn't.The book is replete with anecdotes about the author's interactions with various patients, and I felt that most of it was redundant. The main B-R-E-A-T-H-E exercise may be valuable to some and could have been taught in one simple chapter without the rest of the chatter.

1-0 out of 5 stars Really bad service
I nver recieved the book, have no idea where it is.I will never buy anything from Amazon again

Product Description
Infants, children and adolescents with congenital heart disease (CHD) are a challenge to manage and an ever-increasing number are reaching adulthood.

CHD is one of the most important topics in cardiology today, yet this book is the only clinically-orientated monograph devoted exclusively to ventricular function and blood flow as it relates to CHD. It is essential that not only pediatricians, pediatric cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and cardiac anesthesiologists familiarize themselves with all the nuances of this branch of pediatrics, but that family practitioners, internists, adult cardiologists and intensivists do so as well.

Written by a distinguished panel of cardiologists, bioengineers, physiologists, and clinical investigators, Ventricular Function and Blood Flow in Congenital Heart Disease is an extensive and comprehensive presentation of the key aspects of this branch of CHD.

This textbook can be used as both a learning tool and reference, or as a springboard to further study in the field. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Dr. Sinatra.
After discovering I had a very serious heart arythmia, I went on a quest to find information on how I could treat the root of my condition instead of just taking drugs (that had serious side effects). This book has literally changed my life. I currently am doing very well using what I learned from this book and drinking a Hawthorne Berry tea. This book is very deep, authentic and comprehensive. I have no ties to the author and I must say that if you know anyone with a heart condition who is willing to do some self examination, this book will give them incredibly important and useful information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great credentials - interesting points - makes you think
Dr. Sinatra is both a cardiologist and a psychologist, a rare and useful combination. The thesis of this book is stated way back on page 239:

"My patients have taught me so much about the preciousness of life. If you want to heal or prevent heart disease, the first step is recognitiono fold wounds, losses and your emotional reactions to them. The next stepis mobilizing those trapped energies and feelings and discharging them inways that are nurturing to your heart.Following a healthy lifestyle isanother significant step toward obtaining optimum health. The final stepin healing is to realize the profound depth of spirituality and how heartdisease can, indeed, be a messenger of something more."

His objectivesare to answer his questions listed in his Preface as follows: 1) To whatextent do emotional factors and one's own intrinsic personality play a partin heart disease? 2) Are suppressed feelings and emotions significant? 3)Donegative feelings such as abandonment, heartbreak, betrayal or humiliationcreate conditions that invite death? 4) What do positive emotions such aslove, faith, and good humor play in the process of healing and stayingwell? 5) What is the significance of the way we breathe?

Dr. Sinatratakes us through his medical training and explains his reasons for pursuinga degree in psychology. As the above selection says, he emphasizes therole of heartbreak and loss in the child to the eventual heart diseasedadult. He explains the concept of narcissistic injury, how thenarcissistic parent inflicts it on the child, and the consequences in lateryears.

He prescribes his heart disease reversal program which is basedon established findings in cardiology, but also on his training andknowledge as a bioenergetic psychologist. His program seems a little outof the ordinary since it resembles alternative medicine, but he describesit in a way that makes sense.

The only shortcoming of this book, in myopinion, is his case histories since they do not seem to relate to hispoints very well. They could be omitted or put in an appendix.

As aheart patient, I learned much from this book, and recommend it. ... Read more

Product Description
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is an enormous health problem in the developed world. It is the commonest cause of death worldwide, and GPs and nurse practitioners have a vital role to play in diagnosis, management and risk reduction. In the popular Q and A format of the Your Questions Answered series, this book provides succinct, expert information on CHD. Although aimed mainly at the primary care practitioner, it also addresses many questions asked about CHD by other physicians, practice and community nurses, medical students and trainees, and indeed patients. With an emphasis on evidence-based, up-to-date knowledge, the authors discus all aspects of this serious condition, including relative risk factors; the role of lifestyle in both prevention strategies and management; and the use of drug therapies, including ACE inhibitors and statins. Some frequently asked patient questions, in non-medical language, are included, and there is a list of sources of further information and patient s * Popular question-and-answer format * Covers both commonplace and rarer issues * Includes information on other types of headache * Lists useful websites, associations, patient resources * Sections on patient's frequently asked questions ... Product Description
"At the turn of the century, heart disease andatherosclerosis were virtually unheard of. Today, however, they arethe Western world's number one killers, with cancer running rightbehind. As a practitioner who has examined many people, I know thatclogged arteries and poor circulation are an unfortunate fact of lifefor many. While mortality statistics at the turn of the century arenot altogether reliable, there is always a consistent figure fordeaths from heart attacks or heart disease: between 6 and 8 %. By the1950s, that number had climbed to 30%. Today, almost 50% of all deathsin the United States and Australia are from cardiovascular disease(CVD) or coronary heart disease (CHD). What went wrong?

As we shall see in this little book, the answers will surprise you." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Intrepid Researcher
Stephen Byrnes' work was always well researched. This book is no exception to that. Rosemary's comment is typical of a PETA vegan; aggressive and attack-dog like. Stephen Byrnes DID follow his own advice but he died of complications of HIV.

1-0 out of 5 stars Byrnes died on June 17, 2004, of a stroke at age 40
Dr. Byrnes" was not a medical doctor. Before he died of cardiovascular disease at age 40 he held a doctorate in "Alternative Medicines from the Alternative Medicines Research Institute". His undergraduate work was not in a premed curriculum. He had a bachelor of arts degree in comparative religion.

If you want to treat or prevent heart disease read the works of Dr. Dean Ornish M.D.. His program has been clinically proven to reverse heart disease. The proof of his work is published in mainstream conservative medical journals.

1-0 out of 5 stars He practiced what he preached, and died young!
The author has no special information about nutrition that mainstream doctors and scientists don't know about--he is just plain wrong. Sadly, he died of a stroke at a young age in 2004. Ignore his advice and look for books with solid scientific references, such as those by Neal Barnard, MD, if you really want to improve your heart health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spreading the word that will save lives.
Stephen Byrnes' book is short and clear and very persuasive.I have given it to three people (with cardiovascular health problems) as a gift and I am confident that if they read this book and take even a few things to heart, they will live healthier and longer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pass on this one...
I found it hard to separate the wheat from the chaff with this book. The useful information in this book is buried between unsubstantiated statements of fact and obscure references.I mean, the author makes it sound like everybody should know what "acerola powder" is, as if you could pick it up at the local market.I found his writing style to be preachy and pontificating, like a politicized tirade from Crossfire, where the "other side" couldn't possibly have anything of value to add to the conversation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book on Heart Disease, Best for the Price Also
I have read more than a half dozen books on reversing or preventing heart disease and this is one of my favorites.Don't let the low price or original publication date throw you.Everything I read is mirrored in other more recent books and the author throws in some additional insights of her own.

I am a health care professional, and I ordered two dozen of these books and loan them out to patients and have had nothing but complements.

Other highly recommended books include my favorite 'Track Your Plaque, and any of Joel Fuhrman's Books.See a more complete review of mine of many of the books under a book called 'The Cure for Heart Disease'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
It's hard to imagine finding more value for a few bucks than Jean Carper's various books, including 'Miracle Heart'.So I've given a couple dozen of these to friends, relatives, and employees.Because of this book, my wife & I have been on about 5 grams of citrus pectin per day (chapter 12) for a year and a half plus other recommendations longer. My dad & brother already have stents, and my wife's mother died of complications from strokes. We recently had our hearts scanned for hard plaque and both came up totally clean.Co-incidence?

Jean Carper's style is to usually cover one subject per chapter and reference the original research sources.Although I might like it a little more brief, I think she says enough to cover the subject without being too verbose. She covers a few or several subjects, puts a cover on it and goes to print.

We have serveral Carper books as well as another 50 health books.I think Jean Carper is one of the best sources in our library. Is this book perfect?Absolutely Not.Is it Outstanding? Absolutely Yes.Read it for what is there, not for what is not there.

4-0 out of 5 stars In addition to diet and exercise!
I understand the points of the previous reviewer. As a journalist, Carper might have included information from the studies he/she is referring to.However, I believe that those who are buying books like Miracle Heart arebecause they are already monitoring their diet and exercise to keep theirhearts healthy.Supplements do just that: supplement what we are alreadydoing.Co-Q10, ALA, HGH etc are not to replace choosing to exercise to eata healthy diet.I took Carper's information as a means to supplement whatI am already doing. My parents are taking Co-Q10 as part of their array ofsupplements and are feeling healthier. They get their supplements from asite called PapaNature because it offers documentation, a variety of brandsand door to door service.

4-0 out of 5 stars very informative
This book summarizes much of the latest research on prevention of cardiovascular related diseases. The author covers almost all (forgot, e.g. "melatonin") of the bases in relating the latestdevelopments in diet related heart disease prevention, and as such I foundit an excellent informative book. The author reports the studies, theresults, the recommendations and the dosages relating to supplementation ofvitamins, minerals, some herbal products, omega 3, etc. etc.The bookcontains new information that I believe has yet to be widely disemminated.. I discern the same weakness in this book as in much of the currentinformation on diet, to wit, how to combine allinto a single plan oftreatment. The author might have reported to us that studies have yet tobe done on how these divergent benefits of supplements can beadvantageously and safely combined, but instead omitted any suchdiscussion. Additionally, and I note this as another suspected weaknessin my mind of the medical work currently being done on diet, it seems thatall of the information is coming out of what I consider to be highlysuspicious "population" studies, as opposed to research onindividuals( ormonkees) on the chemical effects on a single individual ofsupplementation. If I am going to take 1000 grams of vitamin C per day, Iwould like to know the immediate and long term chemical effect, as opposedto knowing that 6000 people lowered their risk of heart attack by 19% by sotaking. And, then, immediately after reading the book, what do we get butone study concludingthat excess C contributes to, rather than prevents, the problem. But as an educational tool this is a very fine effort! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Cleveland Clinic Healthy Heart Cookbook
Even though I haven't made any recipes from this one, the beginning chapters on diet, exercise and changing your lifestyle are invaluable.Very good information.
I purchased this for a friend who had to have 2 stents put in and she loves it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid food information
I was tuned into this book by an article in Diabetic Living Magazine. The draw was about the 40 heart healthy foods and how to incorporate them into your diet. I tracked down this book. Where else? On Amazon. I ordered it. It arrived just as expected. The book is not a fancy full of photos book. Rather small green type...a little hard to read. But as I review it, I find it has the authority of experience of the Cleveland Clinic and the expertise of authors form the prestigious Joslin Diabetic Center. As a person who is on the edge for diabetes and heart disease, I love to be fully equipped with the best information I can to maintain my current health.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good cookbook and info
We really like the Cleveland Clinic's Healthy Heart Lifestyle Guide and Cookbook. I got it for our whole family to use because my husband has recently been diagnosed with high cholesterol at the age of 31, a shock to all of us with him being at such a young age.

I remembered recently reading about this cookbook in the Cleveland Clinic's heart surgery ICU after my father's open heart surgery in early August. The recipes are very good and are not too complicated to make. We have enjoyed the recipes and have been surprised at the wide variety of food we can all have in a healthy heart diet. Everyone can benefit from lowering their cholesterol so our whole family including our young children are keeping to this type of diet (a refreshing change from typical kid fare such as mac and cheese and chicken fingers).

The biggest thing that I remember about my father's 6 week stay at the Cleveland Clinic, was how much he enjoyed their food. This cookbook was an easy choice for us because of what my father had to say about the food there. Sadly he passed away 3 weeks after coming home, we are also using this cookbook as a tribute to him.

2-0 out of 5 stars Less Than Anticipated
Following our recent stay at the Cleveland Clinic I was impressed by all communications and printed matter coming out of the Clinic. The Cleveland Clinic Cookbook certainly promised to offer a concise roadmap of how to cook heart healthy fare, however, once I began reading and leafing through its contents I was surprised to see that it was not all it was cracked up to be.The first recipe I selected turned out alright, however, the directions were not concise and oddly enough the very pages on which the book is printed are not of good quality so that if you happen to spill something while cooking or even just dampen the page it seeps through (they must have used a light weight paper stock in a move toward economy?) so, to my utter surprise, this book is less than expected. Perhaps it might be wise to skip this volume and search the many other options available for good heart healthy fare....

5-0 out of 5 stars A culinary wealth of savory, 'kitchen cook friendly' recipes that would grace any family meal or celebratory dining event.

1-0 out of 5 stars living with heart disease
I agree with the comments of the other reviewers with the addition
that the author does not even mention Dean Ornish and his treatment program

3-0 out of 5 stars Some great basic info, but totally misleading in other areas
This book is good start if you're just trying to get an idea of what heart disease is, how it's treated, and what you or your loved one can do to combat it.

Much of the information is in my opinion too basic. Not smoking should be a no-brainer.

I have heart disease and a stent.I've been self treating this condition for several years now through diet and supplements.I've had some successes and failures, although my health overall has improved drastically since I started.I've looked at several books on heart disease in terms of how to best treat it and I have to say that, once you get beyond the basic level, this book in a few places is outright misleading.

For example, the author repeatedly states that you should "try to limit" your intake of trans fats.Perhaps the author is trying to be understanding to the fact that trans fat is so common in American pre-packaged foods.Still no excuse. It's probably not possible, but you should try to eliminate ALL trans fat. This is a man-made fat that has zero food value and is harmful to any body with or without heart disease.

It's this lowest common denominator mentality that I find the most disturbing with this book. The author pushes prescribed drugs while making over the counter alternatives like niacin (used to treat high cholesterol) sound downright unpleasant.

The author writes that it has a "high number of side effects" and most people experience hot flashes. Not necessarily true at all. There are multiple forms of of niacin. The most effective kind that should not cause flushing is called "sustained release" and you take 1 500mg pill 3x a day. Read Robert Kowalski's "The New 8 Week Cholesterol Cure" for more information.

This warning away from niacin is extremely troubling given the lax view on trans fat.Why be negative about using niacin while not being more forceful about eliminating from your diet what is essentially a poison? It makes no sense.

I also couldn't find anything in this book about pantothenic acid.If you have high triglycerides then you need to know about this natural remedy. On my first blood test my number was through the roof. After taking pantotheic acid my number wasn't just well below acceptable, it was more better than when I was taking the Lipitor my doctor had pushed on me!

You don't want to rush out there and use "alternative" methods haphazardly. As Kowalski points out in his book, some herbal remedies are outright dangerous for heart disease patients.

The problem is that doctors treat us like children. They don't expect us to stop eating trans fat. They don't except us to change our diet.So they throw pills at us and scare us away from readily available cheaper alternatives.

Unfortunately, as good as this book is at explaining the basics, it's just more of the same of this rather unhealthy approach to treating heart disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Chapunoff is a master of knowing how to pull in his readers by presenting information that is current and relevant
Author Eduardo Chapunoff, M.D. integrates both his professional experience as a cardiologist with good solid information in his Answering Your Questions About Heart Disease & Sex.

As Dr. Chapunoff mentions in the introduction to the book, one of the most common problems in discussing sex with your health provider is embarrassment. And another problem is that only up to recently has there been a concerted effort to address in detail the subject matter. Even Dr. Chapunoff admits that before he wrote his book, he knew very little about advising patients as to the precautions they should take before, during, and after sexual intercourse. As a result, when he first set out to research the topic, he was astounded when he discovered that there was very little information pertaining to sex and the cardiac patient in classical medical and cardiology textbooks or in medical journals. Only during the last ten years has the subject been taken seriously with clinical research and clinical observations of heart disease patients and their sexual performance.

In an upbeat, direct, straight forward conversational style, Answering Your Questions About Heart Disease & Sex provides basic facts about a multitudeof concerns that directly or indirectly relate to cardiac patients and their sexual partners. Examples of some of the questions explored are when should a person be able to resume sexual activity after a massive heart attack? Are there any special sexual positions one should adopt after a heart attack? What is the danger to engage in passionate lovemaking if you have hypertension, heart failure, valvular heart disease, aortic aneurysm and/or cardiac rhythm disturbances?

Dr. Chapunoff is a master of knowing how to pull in his readers by presenting information that is current and relevant to not only cardiac patients but also to others who may be thinking about the topic but were too shy or embarrassed to discuss it with their physicians.

Divided into four parts, the book begins with the basic facts to sex and the heart. It is here where we learn about the reality of experiencing a heart attack and its ramifications insofar as concerns its benefits and yes, believe it or not, there are some interesting benefits. From here Dr. Chapunoff explains cardiovascular disease, sex, aging, sexual dysfunction, female perspective, risks of sex, communicating with your doctor and sexual partner, and what to do after a heart attack. Dr. Chapunoff also explains and explores erectile dysfunction, exercise, and nutrition. Quite interesting, Dr. Chapunoff states that the majority of doctors and patients avoid discussing the right time to resume sexual activity following a heart attack, an acute cardiac crisis or cardiac surgery. Unfortunately, this has led to many a patient deciding on their own when to once again become sexually active with some disastrous results. Unfortunately, as mentioned, the timing for resumption of sexual activity is not determined by a book or general principles as every case is unique and should be treated individually by your health-care practitioner.

Dr. Chapunoff also explores myths and facts surrounding sex and the heart with some humor thrown in as an example, a physician to his patient: "You are telling me that you had sex without waiting for my recommendations, and as soon following your coronary? Walter, didn't you think it was risky?"And the patient's reply: "No, I thought it was worthy!"

As Dr. Chapunoff mentions in his introduction, it is difficult to tell which of the topics dealt with in the book are more important. Questions that you never focused on and perhaps considered trivial, may be extremely important for your cardiac health and sexuality. Consequently, the book will prove to be invaluable to widen your horizons concerning the subject matter, however, as mentioned, this educational guide should not be a substitute for any of your physician's recommendations. Medical treatments are not provided by books but rather by doctors.

Norm Goldman, Editor Bookpleasures

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have a heart, read this book!
In writing, Answering Your Questions About Heart Disease And Sex, Eduardo Chapunoff, M.D., uses an intriguing, comfortable and witty format to address intimate health issues that are of particular concern to cardiac patients and their sexual partners. However, it would be a mistake for readers to pass up this book if they don't fit into this category because it contains a vast amount of information regarding the heart, and other physical and emotional concerns that any individual would find invaluable.

The author uses dialogue to effectively convey some of the questions that patients ask after suffering heart attacks or being diagnosed with serious heart problems. Many of them want to know the risk factors involved in making love.Do they dare engage in passionate lovemaking and, if so, WHEN?Dr. Chapunoff is honest and forthright with his answers and provides general guidelines, while strongly emphasizing that only a patient's personal physician can provide the appropriate options and timing for sexual activity.

This book is informative, well-researched and appropriate for professionals; however, it is not too technical for the average reader who may be desperately seeking answers.Other than a book entitled Sex and the Cardiac Patient published by the same author in 1991, there are no other books addressing the issues he covers.Dr. Chapunoff, with the writing of these two books, has opened a door to a long-neglected subject. He relates that many patients hesitate in discussing sex with their personal physicians because they feel that they don't know the physicians well enough or, perhaps, know them too well. Many times both the patient and physician are uncomfortable with the subject matter. The author strongly recommends that future physicians receive more exposure and training in sexology, psychology, and communications skills in medical school and during postgraduate training.

As I read this book, I recalled the time when my ninety-one year old father confided in me that he had tried to talk with his family doctor about sex after suffering a severe heart attack. He said that the doctor was uncomfortable and at a loss for words. I could understand because I felt my face turning red-after all this was my dad and I just couldn't imagine him being sexual. Especially at his age!Though I wanted to run, I listened and later thought about the doctor who had brushed my father aside when he was seeking help. How I wish I'd had a copy of this book to give Dad and his physician.

Dr. Chapunoff addresses a variety of subjects that will be of great interest and value to the cardiac patient. The first chapter is entitled Anatomy of a Heart Attack and the last chapter is fittingly named Planning for a Better Future. In between there are chapters that discuss instructions to patients, the benefits of a heart attack, masturbation, communication, extramarital affairs, sex following a cardiac crisis, sexual dysfunction, erectile dysfunction, Viagra, etc. It is this reviewer's belief that, if you are a cardiac patient and have questions in regard to sexual and health issues, you will probably find these questions addressed in this book. This excellent resource proves that an informative and educational reading experience can also be engaging even when the subject matter is very serious.

5-0 out of 5 stars LIFE-SAVING Information
I am going to keep this review short, simple and to the point.

FORGET the antiquated "cholesterol test" that most doctors use today (that only look at TOTAL, LDL, HDL cholesterols and triglycerides). This "ancient" test does NOT tell you what you REALLY need to know.

"Heart Smart" contains information about the MANY different risk factors for heart attacks and strokes.

Few people (including most Internists / General Practitioners, and many Cardiologists) know too little or nothing at all about these risk factors.

You or a loved one could die from or suffer an incapacitating heart attack or stroke that could have been prevented with early detection of these risk factors.

Read "Heart Smart", get ALL of the tests (can be done easily) and know for certain what your risk factor(s) are for heart attack / stroke.

If you choose to ignore the information in this book, you do so at your own risk, and will have only yourself to blame if you suffer a heart attack or stroke...IF you live through it!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Some useful information, some less so. Deserves equal consideration with the current best-sellers on CVD.
Having read the books by Ignarro, Esselstyne (currently the best-seller), and Sinatra (not Frank), and bogging down a bit in Ornish's lengthy precedent (I'm over half way through), I decided to read DeVane's book.In some ways, it's the most practical and informative, enlightening the reader about all of the latest diagnostic tests and devices as well as the advantages and disadvantages of various drugs to "modify" cholesterol levels (he's careful to distinguish among the three cholesterol types as well as the medications themselves, since a statin drug, while effective at lowering bad cholesterol, is considerably less so at raising good cholesterol, where niacin suddenly becomes the weapon of choice).

I say "weapon" because DeVane's approach is the most aggressive of the five books, at times the most alarmist. He starts you off with a heart attack or stroke, counting the precious seconds elapsing before the ambulance or defibrillator arrive as meanwhile the muscles of the heart and/or cells of the brain die or suffer irreparable injury. It's a quick attention-getter, and not a little scary. But of the five books, he's the most up-to-date with a lot of information about testing, pros and cons, new mechanical devices for accomplishing such testing and the ups and downs and hows of each.

In the last quarter of the book, a more human voice begins to emerge from the pages, as the author talks about his father's highly premature death from a heart attack and proceeds, like the other books, with his list of recommendations. Here's where one book may be more advisable than five for the reader who wishes to take proactive measures whether as a preventive measure or therapeutic one.All of these author-doctors agree on the main culprits (saturated fats) and the best defense (omega-3 fatty acids and exercise), but the discrepancies among the five when it comes to the details can be maddening.Whereas Esselstyne appears to loathe (to put it mildly) all oils--above all, fish oil (merely more animal fat)--DeVane can't get enough of it, and would have you slather your insides with it.Whereas Ignarro prescribes Vitamin E as one of his 7 essential defenses/cures (L-Arginnine being the most important), DeVane says don't bother: no evidence whatsoever than Vitamin E (as a supplement) ever helped anyone with a heart condition and, in fact, may even have harmed some misled patients.Whereas DeVane praises nuts (and, above all, peanuts), Esselstyne appears to condemn them as so much solidified fatty food, certainly no cure for out-of-whack cholesterol levels (I have a hunch which of the two authors would be endorsed by Jimmy Carter).

All of the books have their strengths and weaknesses.Ornish's can be recommended for its comprehensive approach, not excessively focused on the physical at the expense of the personal, human and spiritual.DeVane's is closest to the recommendations and practices of the A.M.A. and other "official," recognized heart-healthy agencies.

If there's a problem with medical books in general it's that, given the moment-by-moment permutations of actual experience, they're dated the moment they've been published (talk to a med student about the usefulness and street value of last year's med text), but the author practically feels compelled (even if unconsciously) to embrace his positions as stated in the book regardless. The phenomenon is especially true of "political books"--for example, written discourse that is pro or con Obama and National Health Care reform.Yet some crusader comes on another news show condemning the President for not bringing us the program for which the majority of Americans voted him into office--and the author (ANY author), always in full view of his publisher, is forced to tunnel-vision the issue because that's what his own written words, his calcified language, rather than his living thoughts, has told him is "the truth."The increased pressure on authors to "sell" their books--now a public relations requirement--has made matters worse than ever (I think we began to see the deleterious effects of the "new media" beginning with once-respected scientists/experts-turned-book-hustlers such as Linus Pauling and Adele Davis).

So some of DeVane's recommendations are bound to sound out-of-date just as some others will revise the dated pronouncements of other currently trendy heart savants.Who are you going to believe? The problem must be especially troublesome to those who don't understand science--or religion, or theology and faith. All of the foregoing are frequently seen as "absolutes"--or as fields of reference capable of yielding authoritative yes or no, black and white answers.(Yeah, sure. Make room for Falwell, then Glen Beck, then the next loony or, if we're lucky, at least a well-intentioned Wizard of Oz.)By contrast, DeVane encourages the reader to be aggressive and pro-active, demanding an initial program of cholesterol testing every other week.(Now if only the cardiologists and G.P.s would be so cooperative.)

But this is America--a free country, even if we're currently behind in terms of health care (and a healthy population). And you're free to read the various remedies, consolidate the ones offered in various best-selling books on Amazon, or hitch your wagon to just one of them and ride it all the way. (We try to be rational but, in the end, make a Kierkegardian leap of faith or, as is more often the case, let events transpire and hope for the best, since in the late stage of an illness that we may not even have realized we had until those critical hours, few of us will be clear-headed enough to decide on what might strike us as the best course of action.)All we can pray for at that point is an informed and competent, caring physician (along with a better national health care program).Still, as DeVane warns at the end of his book, he's only one physician; the other one is necessarily the reader.Better to keep that latter physician clearly in focus, assisted by books such as this, rather than become sidetracked by a political debate that shouldn't even be one.

[Not a popular review, I see.As I said, it's a free country, but whatever your opinions, I hope you read the book.In a matter this serious, knowledge counts far more than personal likes and dislikes.]

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Source of Vital Information
This book breaks down the causes of cardio-vascular disease, the treatments including tests, drugs and alternative supplements and foods.Easy to understand even without prior knowledge of cardiology and pathology.I highly recommend this book to anyone serious about avoiding the development of cardiovascular disease, reducing the damage of it or even reversing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Smart Book for Everyone
A Cardiologist writes this book in lay-man's terms. It is well-written at an appropriate level for a reasonably intelligent person. Dr. DeVane explains concepts well, makes the topic interesting and includes new advances. His holistic approach is practical and easy to read. I buy this book frequently and give it for birthday and Christmas gift giving.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK AND A GREAT READ!!
This is the best book I've read that covers heart disease detection, prevention, and reversal PERIOD.A mandatory read if you have heart disease in your family!! I've read many of these types of books because I have heart disease in my family and have been dealing with genetic high cholesterol my whole life.Everything you need to know about heart disease in one book...it's like a complete handbook on heart disease.

The first part deals with what it is actually like to have a heart attack and what to do to stay alive...this is worth the price of the book alone. The author believes that absolutely NO ONE should ever have a heart attack much less die from one with a little proactive work from you and your doctor.

The book outlines all the various ways to properly test the likelihood of heart disease (just one example: Don't just take a cholesterol and stress test; but actually testing the size of your body's cholesterol may be more valuable to know since you can have a heart attack with as little as 30% blockage and traditional stress test only detects blockage of 70% or greater) This book is absolutely full of this type of useful information which can keep you around for a very long time.

Also, I really liked the way this book has all the up-to-date medial detection and medical treatment technology and goes way beyond the basic stuff you see in all the other medical publications (Details the different types of cholesterol tests, stress tests, heart scan technology, etc.).Also runs through the good points and bad points from a cardiologist standpoint of the more popular diets that people use (instead of just singling out fat as the culprit like every other medical publication.)

This book is technical but simple for the lay person to understand because of the easy explanations Dr. Devane uses. The book gives you today's most up to date tools to PROPERLY detect and reverse heart disease.Just knowing all the facts that are out there makes it easier to motivate yourself to take control and responsibility over making proper decisions if you or someone you love has to deal with heart disease.

GREAT BOOK AND A GREAT READ!!
