5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for those just diagnosed
Teri has written a wonderful book for those who are dealing with migraines, as well as for their family members. It includes a lot of information that you need to know/things to be aware of if you have just been diagnosed or suspect you might have migraines. It helps with the question "is this all just in my head" by sharing experiences that others have gone through. My family has also found this to be a useful book for understanding what the migraine process is (start to finish, ie that headache is just one part of a migraine), and also helping them be aware of changes that suggest a migraine is coming.
I highly recommend this book and have purchased two additional copies for friends who also suffer from migraines.

4-0 out of 5 stars Living Well with Migraine Disease and Headaches
I do not have a problem with headaches however I purchased two copies of this book upon the recommendation of a friend who has suffered with Migraines for years and found help in these pages. The two copies were for friends and relatives that have had such headaches. So far I have no feedback from them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Migraine and Headache Book Review
I am very happy with the book, the price, and the speed with which I received the item in the mail. The book is excellent, however, I am not finished with it yet so I can only vouch for what I have read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Migraine Disease and Headaches
Living Well with Migraine Disease and Headaches has presented some facts about migraines which were interesting to me. As to how helpful it will be, I really don't know. I am an older woman who has had migraines for 49yrs so most preventatives have been tried on me. At the present time I am only trying to cope with the headaches with pain medication and complete bedrest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Got this book and gave it away ....
This book is very informative specially to those who have not yet done a good amount of research on migraines. I have. But I still found the book very useful. So why did I give it away ? The guy from AT&T U-verse swapping out my DVR unit mentioned he was having migraine right at that time and he seems to not have as much info on it as I do -- so I gave him the book and I just hope that it would be very helpful for him.

Product Description
"I have such a bad headache!" For many of us, this is an oft repeated cry of anguish. Statistics about headaches and migraines are downright astonishing:One in six people have frequent headaches, and of those, one in ten suffers from migraines. You are not alone. Headaches and migraines result in more than 10 million doctor visits each year. If you struggle frequently with headache pain, this book offers a welcome solution.Trigger point therapy is an effective self-care approach you can use to get relief from headache pain.

Trigger points form in a portion of the muscle cell where blood flow is reduced and metabolic wastes are not being exchanged for oxygen and nutrients. When enough trigger points are located together, they can form palpable knots in the tissue. Trigger points can cause pain, either in the area of the trigger point, or by referral to other areas of the body.Trigger points can be treated by applying pressure to affected areas, often providing instant relief. Trigger Point Therapy for Headaches and Migraines explains trigger point physiology and then offers a complete program for self-care that includes detailed illustrations of all pressure and stretching techniques. In addition, it provides an in-depth look at the factors that cause and perpetuate trigger points, such as body mechanics, injuries, diet and nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, and emotional factors, and provides solutions to address each perpetuating factor.

5-0 out of 5 stars The massage I always wanted, daily, at home
I stumbled across this book at a bookstore and was astonished to see diagrams that directly connected the chronic "knots" in my neck and shoulder region to the most frequent locations of my migraine pain.I have the kind of muscle tissue knots that prompted one massage therapist to ask, "So when was the car accident?"(There wasn't any.)Most massage therapists have barely even begun to loosen the knots by the time a one-hour session is up.

I didn't know what trigger point therapy was but had heard about using a tennis ball to help with back problems - it had seemed a little silly. Now I am using this therapy (nearly) every day. It's too early to tell whether it is helping the migraines, but it feels incredible, immediately relieving pain.I use the therapy right before I go to bed and when I wake up in the morning thoselittle healing muscles still feel all gooey and relaxed. It's soooooo easy to do at home - don't wait years and years to take care of yourself like I did.

Although the photos and layout aren't very visually attractive, the substance of the book is wonderful. If you've got knots, get the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful information
This book helped me so much.I have TMJ with pain in my jaw and Trapezius' and the information given in the book helped me lots.I have referred this book to all of my friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have
As with all the reviews already written I agree that this is an excellent resource book to have.It explains everything there is to know about the trigger points. It also gives credit where credit is due to Dr. Travell, the first real trigger point pioneer and carries her studies even further into present day breakthroughs. It has detailed diagrams as well as easily understood techniques to use on clients or on yourself. This book also contains a very in depth chapter on nutrients and vitamins that should be taken for muscle health. Not to mention the insistence of water..(FINALLY) for muscle health and growth. I am a massage therapist specializing in medical massage, deep tissue therapy with neuromuscular and myofascial release and of course trigger point therapy and encounter an extrordinary amount of clients with head pain. This book is my new "go to book" for double checking my techniques. I also keep many of them on hand to give to clients for home self treatment. This book is easy to read, learn from and use.Truly a must have book for not only massage therapists, but anyone in the health care field that sees people for head pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book
This book says it all and shows you how to take care of yourself. If you are looking for something the medical community has been unable to provide for you (as in relief without pharmaceuticals) this is it.Valerie DeLaune knows how to get this valuable information on paper and into your head, very accessible to anyone who can read.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my life!
I was having migraines every day, some even lasted for days and I even had one that lasted a week. Medications prescribed by my doctor would barely even make a dent in the pain. Within one day of starting the Magnesium treatment I noticed that the migraine I had been suffering from for days was starting to lessen, by day two I could tell a definite improvement and by day three it was completely gone and it has not been back. If I forget to take the magnesium for a couple of days I notice an ache starting in my head and I take it immediately and it goes away. Needless to say, I don't forget to take it often!

5-0 out of 5 stars Try magnesium
For anyone that needlessly suffers from migraines and has not already tried magnesium, you need to try it RIGHT AWAY. This book proves how important it is.

I've suffered with migraines (every week and sometimes daily) for the past 5 years taking pointless medications from doctors (topamax, nortriptylene) , which did not work at all. After starting to supplement with magnesium I started noticing a great improvement in the frequency and severity of my migraines and my overall well being. After taking magnesium for only two weeks, my headaches arn't comletely gone yet, but have been greatly reduced so far. I'm BLOWN AWAY that the doctors i've seen havn't ONCE suggested that I try magnesium or other natural methods that actually work. It's completely ridiculous and not very far from a crime, in my opinion.

In my quest to relieve my own migraines ive learned a lot about possible causes of migraine headaches.
Some considerations:
- Try sleeping with your head elevated at a 30 degree angle. A 12 inch foam wedge does this the best. This has helped me... read this book for more info -

-Eliminate all MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) and other exitotoxins from diet
-Some headaches are caused psychologically, try this site -http://www.psychresearch.com/headache1.html
-Biofeedback - stress can be a big trigger for chronic headaches
-Drink more water

This is just what has helped me, I can't guarantee my suggestions will work for you but they are well worth a try. If you get migraine headaches I recommend you try solving the problem through natural methods (like i've mentioned) before you start taking preventive medicine or have surgery. Remember: If drug companies cured people they would be out of business.

Bottomline: Try Magnesium (anything but oxide), and other natural methods

1-0 out of 5 stars Well Researched, But No Help
I tried following the directions in this book.He provides quite a lot of research for his findings (reads more like a medical study than a book) and lots of options for different types of magnesium to try.I ended up using the one that he uses (magnesium chelate with ammino acids) as this didn't upset my stomach as much as the others, but now I have a bunch of bottles of supplements just sitting in my medicine cabinet.By the time you are taking the magnesium (4-8 tablets / day), B2 (1 / day), feverfew (2-6 / day), plus anything else you might already be taking (calcium, multivitamin etc) I was up to 14 pills per day!!It was upsetting my stomach so much (diaherrea all the time) that I just had to stop.Plus all the pills were like a meal in itself, and who wants to take all those pills every day for the rest of your life?!?I would rather just take whatever I need when I actually get migraines, and trust me, I get whoppers, sometimes 3 days long, and up to 5 days per week, so I know what I am talking about with headaches. If this book helps some people, that is great, but it didn't help me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book with one flaw
I had read on the internet that magnesium might help my migraine problem, but I took too much and certainly didn't feel better. I then bought this book and got exactly what I wanted -- an explanation on why magnesium might work, directions on exactly what kind to buy (it's an unstable element so it must be combined with something else, but some combinations are more likely to make you ill than others), and how much to take (hint: start small!).

I only gave this four stars because even after I read the book and took magnesium properly, it -- once again -- seemed to *cause* a migraine instead of preventing one. The book does not describe this possibility or explain why it might happen. (Has this happened to anyone else?)

5-0 out of 5 stars headache free- finally!
I can't recommend this book highly enough...It has changed my life. My family and friends have never seen me go a month without a headache....I am so happy, and it's like an entirely new life.

If you've tried magnesium before (like I did) but it didn't work for you, you may not have understood how much you need to take and why. Once I read this book, I made connections between a whole slew of problems/triggers.

I used to take Imitrex at least twice a week. I haven't taken one in a MONTH. I had two small headaches that asprin killed....and I also worked out heavily and did a few other things that usually bring on migraines.

Not one yet.

I expect to still get a few, but honestly I can say I am just beginning to see what I've been missing all of these years.

Please, please try this book. I do not know the author in any way. I just hate to think of anyone suffering needlessly after the relief I've achieved so far.

In order to give full disclosure, I ordered another book with the migraine diet in it at same time. I had been on that diet before, but not understood how tracking the foods worked. Two weeks after starting the magnesium supplements, I started the diet as well. I am off Diet Coke and all MSG. However, I had migraines when I was a kid, long before I ate or drank that kind of junk. I think all of this (mg and diet) helps to significantly improve the migraine threshold.

When I feel a headache coming on, I've taken the magnesium as he suggested and it has vanished.

Thank you for this book! It is the best money I've ever spent. ... Read more

Product Description
You know that your migraine isn't just a headache. But you may not know that migraine actually is a neurological disease. Affecting one in five women, one in twenty men, and one in twenty children, it's a debilitating, complex, and chronic condition that manifests in a combination of symptoms that can include excruciating head pain as well as other distinctive physical and emotional effects. Yet it's also a disease that you can get control of, improve, and manage, as Dr. Carolyn Bernstein has discovered in her seventeen years as a Harvard Medical School faculty member and practicing neurologist.

Praised for her excellence and compassion, the founder of the Women's Headache Center near Boston, and a migraine sufferer herself, Dr. Bernstein has helped hundreds of her patients get better. Now, with The Migraine Brain, the most comprehensive, up-to-the-minute book on migraines ever written, you will be able to do the same -- reduce the frequency and intensity of your migraines, learn how to prevent and curtail them and how to recover from them more quickly, and mitigate migraine's effects on every aspect of your life: in the workplace and at home and during sex and travel. Every migraine is different because everyone who gets a migraine has a distinctive "Migraine Brain" with its own sensitivities and triggers. That's why it's so important for you to develop a personalized wellness plan to radically reduce the number and severity of your migraines.

Dr. Bernstein also explains why migraines happen, why they are so often misdiagnosed, and why so few people get the right treatment for them. She reveals the latest research that shows that Migraine Brains share a hypersensitivity to stimuli -- the Migraine Brain can actually look different from others on a brain scan -- and is more likely to experience a cascade of neurological reactions that give rise to the common clusters of migraine symptoms. This breakthrough medical knowledge makes treatment and recovery possible with new migraine-specific drugs as well as with complementary treatments such as yoga, biofeedback, and an exercise regimen.

With the extraordinarily thorough recommendations of The Migraine Brain in your hands, you will be fully equipped with all the latest information you need to understand migraines and to help your family and co-workers understand that migraine isn't just a headache: it's a serious, yet treatable disease. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars this book was so helpful
after reading this book and paying closer attention to what I ate my migraines are basically gone.I still get the occasional migraine, but not nearly has bad as before.Thank you Dr. Bernstein.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I am so happy I came across this book. It has been my go to book and I have learned a lot about migraines. I have learned about how to make my migraines more manageable and ways to avoid triggers. I still get migraines, but now I know other things to try and am not always taking medications. That is one on the biggest reasons I went looking for a book like this. I was tried of taking medications that would knock me out, or being so dependent on them. I have also added feverfew and magnesium into my daily life. The book teaches you how to make small changes in your life that will help with the migraine suffering and most of the time they are free things.Just have to try them and see what works for you since everyone has different types of migraine pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars MIGRAINE RELIEF!
This is an excellent book to read/use as a reference for anyone suffering from a MIGRAINE!

5-0 out of 5 stars best book on migraine
This is the best book on migraines that I have read. The author is a fellow migraineur and a neurologist who has thoroughly researched the problems associated with migraines, and the many treatments now available for migraine sufferers. She takes extra care to address women migraineurs who suffer from this disorder 3 times more often than men (although she does also address male sufferers). The book is written in an understanding but informative manner, acknowledging that migraine can be a disabling disorder, but giving many strategies for dealing with it. These include both the latest medical techniques as well as non-medical approaches for treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars A helpful, supportive book
This book made a big difference in my life. I've had migraines for about 7 years, since the end of high school. In all that time, I haven't found any other resources that are as compassionate and empathetic as this book. Dr. Bernstein tells you early on that she's a migraine sufferer, and you can tell that she really understands your pain. For that alone, I'm thankful.

The basic message of the book isthat your migraines aren't your fault -- they're symptoms of a neurological disease, and you deserve the same treatment as anyone else with that type of illness. She engages the reader in thoughtful discussion about both medicinal and non-medicinal approaches to migraine treatment (eg. she talks at length about biofeedback training and yoga). My experience with the first headache specialist I saw is that he tried to just drug me up without listening to my concerns; in contrast, Dr. Bernstein clearly respects individual patients' attitudes toward medicine, and presents lots of non-drug headache management strategies. While much of the material in the book was not new to me (eg. don't skip meals during the day, or you'll get a migraine), it's a comprehensive synthesis of current medical knowledge within an empathetic framework. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars From the doctors point of view, but oh so easy to read!
This book is wonderful. Dr.Young and Dr.Silberstein explain headaches and Migraine so everyone understands. Never gets "too doctor". A great read for any Migraineur.

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful for the migraine sufferer
This book is one of the better ones I have read on the subject. It is more up to date than some of the other ones out there which is great if you're looking into some of the newer meds (both preventative and acute). The book gives the reader a good overview of migraine and it's history without going too deep into it that the reader stops reading before she gets to the "good stuff".This isn't one of those books that recommends a plan for getting rid of the migraines, rather it is a very informative one that touches on both drugs and alternative ways of treatment.I really like that it was written by two directors of a headache clinic.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstandingreference for headache sufferers!!
An exceptional book!!! A definite "must have" for any headache sufferer.Drs. Young and Silberstein have produced an extremely well written book. "Migraine and Other Headaches" speaks directly to the average reader, with all essential terms spelled out in detail. The use of case studies, tables, and illustrations also aid the reader in their understanding of various concepts.
From the fascinating history of headache to the description of countless headache types and therapies, this comprehensive text captures the essence of headache management.
Two leading experts in their field, the authors stress the doctor/patient relationship as a partnership. This type of partnership can provide the patient with a sense of empowerment to take some control of their headaches. This reader firmly believes that a pleasant working relationship with their physician is crucial, particularly in headache management.
Throughout the text, lifestyle changes have been incorporated as well as recommendations for maintaining daily routines. Additionally, medical therapies, such as various medications and their uses are fully examined.Alternative therapies are explained in detail as well, from herbs and supplements to acupuncture and relaxation techniques.
This publication is also an excellent resource for family and friends of headache sufferers. Taking the time to read this book will hopefully provide some insight into their loved one's pain and difficulties.
I highly recommend this book as an enhancement (or even a beginning) to any "headache library".

5-0 out of 5 stars Not as casual as most on the topic
Drs. William Young and Stephen Silberstein's Migraine And Other Headaches is not as casual as most on the topic: it provides a medically-based analysis of the causes of different types of headaches, defines different migraine experiences, and differentiates between severe headache, tension headache, and migraine. While the reading in Migraine And Other Headaches isn't as easy as some self-help guides on the topic, the focus on uncovering the source of symptoms and various treatment options makes this medical handbook an excellent guide for sufferers seeking better care or more information.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the finest, a must-have book!
Up-to-date, comprehensive, full of information, yet totally readable. For anyone who experiences headaches or Migraines, this is a must-have book. Product Description
If you're one of the 50 million Americans who suffer from headaches, you can eliminate the pain entirely just by changing the way you eat. A headache sufferer himself, Dr. David Marks treats thousands of patients a year at his internationally known headache clinic. The recipes in this book can help you ward off headaches while ensuring that you eat well in the bargain.Amazon.com Review
Food can't cure headaches, but avoiding certain foods may prevent them, according to author David R. Marks, medical director of the New England Center for Headache. Some foods commonly trigger headaches in some people. If you're a headache sufferer, eliminating those foods from your diet is a sensible second step towards managing headaches. (The first step is to see your doctor to determine if there is some underlying condition that is causing the headaches.)

The key is to go on an elimination diet that avoids trigger foods such as most cheeses, chocolate, nuts, certain meats, preservatives, artificial sweeteners, MSG, caffeine, beans, out-of-the-oven yeast products (e.g., pizza, yeast breads, doughnuts), alcohol (especially red wine), ice cream, olive oil, and many, many more. If you were left to your own devices to figure out what's left after eliminating all these foods, you'd probably give up within a day. But Laura Marks has done the work for you, putting together 100 recipes that contain none (whew!) of the forbidden foods. The Headache Prevention Cookbook's recipes aren't bland or boring. They include Hearty Potato-Mushroom Frittata, Crepes with Spinach and Cheese Filling, Eggplant "Caviar," Corn and Carrot Chowder, Linguine with White Clam Sauce, Garlic Chicken, Cornish Hens and Wild Rice with Apricot Sauce, Asian Ginger Beef with Broccoli, Seafood Curry, and Angel Food-Strawberry Delight.

The authors suggest that you follow this diet, using their recipes and others you create yourself, for at least two months, and see if your headaches go away. Then gradually reintroduce the foods you avoided, one per week, so you can track which foods are your personal headache triggers. Once you've figured that out, avoiding those foods permanently can be your ticket to a headache-free future. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Life-saver
This cookbook has helped me go from fifteen headaches a month to three or less. The idea of cutting out the long list of trigger foods can be daunting at first unless you have something like this cookbook to guide you. After a year or so of using it exclusively, I decided to venture out and try forbidden recipes. Sure enough, the headaches came back. I've come back to this book and once again, I'm virtually headache free! I wish David and Laura Marks would write another one.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good start
I thought this book was a great starting place when trying to eliminate migraine triggers. As other reviewers have said, the recipies do lack some things as far as being really healthy or having some triggers in the recipies. But it is a great starting point.Besides, most people don't react to ALL the triggers.

It was refreshing to find things I could eat in place of a list of what I could not eat.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Helpful
After reading Heal Your Headache by Dr. Buchholz, I was anxious to find a good headache-prevention cookbook. But I need a cookbook in which ALL the recipes are free of the commonly known food triggers.Isn't that the point?Well, this book has many recipes with known headache triggers.Apparently we are expected to know which foods are triggers for us and to then alter the recipes accordingly.Well, I'm tired of having to alter recipes! That's what I have to do all the time with regular cookbooks.I thought that this cookbook would be different, but I was wrong.I appreciate that some food triggers are avoided here, but what about all the commonly known triggers that ARE in these recipes, such as lemon juice, orange juice, and onions?I bought the book, tried 3-4 recipes (none particularly good), then threw the book away.

1-0 out of 5 stars What about vegetarians?!
As a vegetarian, I knew I was taking a chance with this title. However, I had just committed to Dr. Buchholz's 1-2-3 Program for healing headaches & was eager to try it out.Needless to say, being a vegetarian isn't a good fit and sooo many of the recipes in the book contained the triggers I was supposed to avoid.Very disappointed!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
My husband is trying to eliminate tyramines and other migraine triggers. I was hoping to find a cookbook that would help us create meals that tasted good, were healthy and safe.

This cookbook misses the mark on several fronts. The worst thing is that it takes a very conservative approach to what is safe to eat. Most recipes included items that we had concluded were not safe or were borderline (determined from researching several different reliable sources). In the initial stages of testing out whether or not tyramines are triggers it is especially important to have an inclusive list and not make exceptions.

The second factor were the recipes themselves. There was very little here that would allow you to make an actual meal and no guidelines on how you would do that.

Third, as another poster pointed out, the recipes are not generally healthy, high in fats and low in vegetables and fruits. This could be compensated for if the rest of the meal were healthy, but without any guidelines it would be difficult to do.

I am hoping to find another cookbook but in the meantime I have been adapting recipes with quite a bit of success. Maybe I'll write a cookbook when I'm done! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I don't think so.
Some of this book is ok. If they would just stick to nutrition it might be ok. They wrote that exercise triggers migraines. Exercise opens the blood vessels and helps aid blood flow. My wife started getting on the treadmill in the mornings, and it's greatly reduced her migraines and improved our love life. Many parts of this book are crap. Oh, and it says sex triggers migraines. It actually relieves it. (again, that exercise factor)
We read half of it and pitched it in the trash.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good advice!
I got this book because I had been to a neurologist for over a year yet still had 15 days of migraines a month. When I eliminated the food items listed as possible triggers, then added them back slowly as the author suggests, I found my triggers and was able to get down to just 2 or three days of migraines a month.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks Elaine, this really helped!
This book offers a ton of practical information for people who suffer from the 6 common types of headaches. My whole family shared the book. I suffer from hormonal headaches and found that information very helpful while another family member has migraines and is currently filling out her headache diary included in the book) so she can better understand what her triggers are. I loved that there were lots of lists and tips as well as reader-friendly answers to complicated medical questions. I've tried a handful of the recipes so far and they offered tasty and easy to make alternatives to favorite foods that have been identified as potential headache triggers. The reason there are different lists of foods for the different headaches is because each type of headache has different foods to choose and foods to lose. I recommend this book highly! It really helped two people in my family.

1-0 out of 5 stars still hungry
This was a disappointing book to me.I was excited to think I had found a book that would help me build a diet of items that were 'safe' to eat. This book, however, gave the typical lists of what not to eat.It is also pretty confusing because one page will list good foods to eat, for example, that are high in magnesium but includes standard trigger foods such as chocolate and nuts that are noted on other pages as being possible problems. It is like the author just copied the list from somewhere and didn't even bother to note which items are thought to be triggers for migraines. The book also has, in my opinion, a too light-hearted feel to it.I was hoping for some solid advice on what to eat in a no-nonsense tone...but didn't find here unfortunately.Maybe I would like the book better if I tried a few of the 21 recipes.I was just hoping for more than a "Peachy Cake" (one of the 21 recipes) book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars There is help for children
I literally just completed an inpatient treatment program provided by the Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago. They were very helpful in reducing the severity of my 21+ year daily chronic headache/migraine. This clinic was founded by Dr. Seymour Diamond. My son also suffers from bad migraines. Most neurologists have been hesitant to treat him because if his age. The Diamond Headache Clinic work with children without hesitation. The doctors here and this book have a wealth of information. I am anxious to apply some of the things I learned there, such as biofeedback and low tyramine diet, with my son.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Technical Book
Dr, Diamond has put together a book full good information relating to childhood headaches. It seems the book is targeted at other Doctors as much as it is for parents.Overall this book was helpful in learning about my daughters migrains but the diary section at the end was a little hard to use.Through my research to help my daughters I found a book that works great and is simple for parent and child to use. The title is "The Headache Detective" by John Ricker. It's a headache workbook designed for children that is easy to follow. It is prabably a little more helpful pinpointing what is causing your child's headache than Dr Diamond's book. Both books were helpfull

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what the doctor ordered
Headache and Your Child is "just what the doctor ordered."My child would double over in pain for no apparent reason. The doctors couldn't pinpoint any cause for the episodes. We had been searching for answers for over a year when we came back to the idea of possible migraines. In searching for information on abdominal migraines I kept coming across the name, Dr. Seymour Diamond. This book has helped us understand migraines and their causes as well as inform us about current treatment options that are available, everything from medication to biofeedback.Through the use of case studies, Dr. Diamond discusses up-to-date diagnostic tools and treatments. He reassures parents that while there are sometimes very serious underlying conditions, not every headache is an indicator of a brain tumor.

I highly recommend this as a "must have" book for the parent of any child that suffers from headaches, not just migraines. It can help in identifying the type of headache your child experiences and offer suggestions of appropriate treatments. If your child has already been diagnosed with migraines, it is still a wonderful reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
This book was very helpful.Although many of the recipes contained trigger foods, it was very clear to the reader to watch for or substitute for these foods if they were a problem.I would recommend this book to anyone who suffers from migraines.

5-0 out of 5 stars lots of good info
Lots of good info if you are trying to sort out migraine triggers. With the help of this book and others I am almost migraine free.

1-0 out of 5 stars Authors Should FollowTheir Own Rules
This book was a disapointment!I have suffered with migraine headaches for years. And I usually make two different dinners each meal--one for my family and one for me.I was hoping to find some recipes I could make that everyone would be able to eat. This book starts out identifying foods that possibly "trigger" headaches, ie., citrus, broadbeans, raw onions, caffeine, etc.You are then informed to avoid these foods. Then the authors print out recipes THAT HAVE THESE SAME FOODS AS MAIN INGREDIENTS!
What a waste of my money this book was.I am disgusted.

1-0 out of 5 stars Foods don't cause migraine
This book perpetuates and exploits the myth that foods cause or trigger migraines. No food has ever been demonstrated to cause, promote, precipitate ("trigger") or aggravate migraine. Beyond a placebo effect, dietary restriction is ineffective as a treatment for headache. (The exceptions are foods containing caffeine or alcohol, both of which are more properly regarded as drugs.) Migraine patients should eat a healthy, varied diet, and not deprive themselves of freedom, enjoyment and nutrition because of an outdated and mistaken belief.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I bought this book thinking I would be getting more of a variety of meals to help prevent migraines and better planning of meals. What I found in my opinion was a lot of receipies with questionable migraine-triggering ingredients. There were VERY few recipes using just the "foods allowed" section.I found about 10 without any yeast, vinegar or other questionable items such as canned or jar ingredients. When you are at the elimination diet stage after being first diagnosed with migraines, this is the diet you need most.At my next Dr. appointment, I plan on bringing in the book to get his opinion.I did find the food purchasing guide helpful. ... Product Description

In the United States, eighteen percent of women, six percent of men, and four percent of children suffer from migraine headaches. All races are affected, although, for reasons which are unknown, whites are more likely than African Americans to be afflicted with the condition, and Asian Americans are least often migraine sufferers. Migraine is an inherited condition-many families can trace it back for generations-and it has enormous economic and social consequences, both to individual sufferers, and to the society as a whole. The cost to the U.S. society alone is in excess of $13 billion per year in lost productivity and in health care.

Understanding Migraine and Other Headaches provides up-to-date information on the causes and diagnoses, as well as current preventive measures, effective treatments, and surgical procedures. The book gives an overview of every major type of headache, including the debilitating, nausea-inducing forms of migraine, episodic tension-type headaches (the most common form), chronic daily headaches, and more obscure head-aches such as trigeminal neuralgia and cluster headaches.

This book is intended for those who are burdened by headaches as well as for their families, coworkers, employers, and friends. As such, it is written in a lucid and simple style that is accessible both to lay readers and medical professionals.

In the last two decades, revolutionary new migraine-specific medications have been developed. This book undertakes a comprehensive look at medications for acute "as needed" treatment of headaches and for preventing the onset of an attack. It offers guidelines for assessing headache pain, the level and type of medication needed, possible side effects, and drug effectiveness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great review of headaches and migraine in particular
I am an otolaryngologist (aka ENT doctor) who sees a lot of patients with "sinus headache", most of whom have migraines.Although this book is presumably written for the lay person, and does a nice job for that audience, I have highly recommended this book to many doctors in training, and for physicians who see migraine patients, but may not have a lot of personal experience or professional experience with treating migraines. Its very readable, concise, and practical.I'm going to buy a couple of copies for my students to use while they are working with me!

Anyone who experiences headaches and Migraines or knows someone who does needs some good books about headaches and Migraine in our libraries. Product Description

Headache is often due to build-up of stress and tension. Acupressure is an effective way to relieve painful sensation associated these conditions. This guide by Aaron Stein, PhD, is based on over 5,000 years of Chinese practice of self-acupressure.

    Features

    - Step-by-step guide to relieving headaches and migraines at 5 locations:
    - In the frontal region of the head (frontal headache).
    - In the back of the head (occipital headache).
    - On the side of the head (temporal headache).
    - On the top of the head (vertex headache).
    - Pain in the eye (headache behind the eye).
    - Every step explains point location, direction of force, and duration of massage.
    - No previous experience necessary
    - Total treatment duration 10 to 15 minutes.

    How acupressure works

Nobody knows how acupressure works. Very often pain is caused by a self-perpetuating mechanism: pain causes the mind to be attentive to pain, that, in turn causes more pain and even more attention, and so on.
Most likely acupressure works by interrupting this vicious circle. How does acupressure interrupt the cycle? Stimulation of active points is thought to lead to increased release of endorphins. Endorphin is a natural body painkiller. Endorphin and morphine are chemically different molecules but, by coincidence, they have very similar 3-dimensional shape. This similarity in shape allows morphine to bind the endorphin receptor and reduce pain.
Thus endorphin released by acupressure stimulation may lead to temporal reduction of mind's attention to pain, interruption of pain cycle, and following complete cessation of pain.

This book should be required reading for all migraine sufferers - - and their physicians.I have experienced migraines all my life and, ultimately, my doctor strongly recommended that I read this book and try Dr. Buchholz's program. It changed my life, and I no longer take any medication for headaches, instead minimizing the "triggers" and being attentive to my "threshold level" that Dr. Buchholz so carefully describes in his book.Dr. Buchholz should receive the Nobel Prize for Medicine for his remarkable work as well as his gift for writing in such an understandable and challenging manner.

i purchased this book for my husband who has suffered with migraines all his life.he has been totally miserable, no medications help - and those that did he would get rebound migraines from.this book has changed his life.one of the biggest things he learned was that all the other head and neck issues were triggers for the migraine.instead of treating them separate, he needed to treat them as the migraine too.

we started on the "diet" a couple of days after he read the first two parts.he had a "caffeine withdrawal" headache for a day or so, but after that he has basically been headache free.he used to wake up about four in the morning with a migraine, only to have it last all day or maybe two, with no relief from any medications.now he might get a headache around two or three in the afternoon - and will have relief from advil or tylenol - and he may get a headache once or twice a week.he has followed the suggestions in this book for over a month and we plan on incorporating this into our way of life now.

we have been very careful not buy foods with the poisonous substances in them and following the directions that dr. buchholz recommends and have had great success.i highly recommend this book to anyone who suffers from any kind of migraine.

An excellent up to date book.Nicely detailed book that's easy to understand but doesn't speak to you like you're a child.
It goes through the four phases of a migraine. It's exactly what happens to me except for the aura.

con: recipes contain possible trigger foods, such as blue cheese.

I've purchased a lot of books on migraines and this is my favorite.I feel I can share this book with family members so they can better understand what I go through. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful advice
I have suffered for migraines for decades now, and tried many different therapies prescribed by various neurologists (anti-depressants, botox, anti-seizure medications, etc.)

When I came upon this book, I figured I had nothing to really lose. After all, the cost of the book is less than my co-pay to see a doctor - and doctors don't give money-back guarantees like Dr. Jones does with this book!

At first reading I was sure this book was written for me. He described my symptoms to a T. I had already read The Migraine Cure: How to Forever Banish the Curse of Migraines by Sergey A., M.D., Ph.D. Dzugan and Deborah Mitchel and was convinced that most of what we hear from doctors about migraines is wrong (diet, stress etc.). I was sure hormones were likely involved. Dr. Jones confirmed that.

He also laid out a relatively inexpensive treatment program consisting of three supplements (now five in the latest edition). I appreciated the fact that Dr. Jones was very specific about what works for most of the women he treats and insists that you didn't have to fly to Houston to see him...you can just try the program and find out if it works for you.

(By the way, that was the difference between his book and Dr. Dzugen's which was basically a sales pitch for his very expensive treatment program that you couldn't implement without his consultation.)

It worked for me. I have far fewer migraines than in the past, and feel better as well. However, I would add that it wasn't an overnight cure. In fact, it wasn't until he recently released an updated version that called for higher doses of the supplements along with Vitamin D and certain types of fish oil, that I really saw a significant and lasting decrease in the number of headaches. (In fact, one day I actually aborted a migraine using his recommendation for Vit. D and fish oil. That's never happened to me before without prescription medication.)

I am still getting a few migraines and experimenting to see if I can get down to none. I went 40 days without one recently - a record for me!

This book is very simple, straightforward, easy to read and to follow. Yes, you'll have to buy some supplements...and at least one is only available through the company he is affiliated with. I really don't mind. I had paid far more for solutions that didn't work. It's not terribly expensive, and it works.

I'd encourage women to read the book, and if what he talks about sounds right to you, try the treatment regiment. Stick with it for at least several months to give it a fair shot.

I'll also add that I emailed his office and got a fast and personalized response to my question.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information
This book contains good information and is written using understandable language. However, it is badly edited (repetitive). It is a small book, even with the repeated information to plump it up. All things considered, I would say it is overpriced. Perhaps buy it as an electronic book instead... But, if you're a woman suffering from migraines, it is worth a read. The information is helful. I am glad I spent the money- I am just annoyed that such a tiny book could cost so much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Takes a few weeks then WORKS LIKE A CHARM !
Dr. Jones is one of those rare MD's who's willing to tell you the TRUTH. He isn't "in bed" with the pharmaceutical industry, like most physicians are. It makes me sad that so many women are taking prescription drugs when they don't need to. They're treating the SYMPTOMS instead of fixing the underlying problem. I found Dr. Jones hormone regimen to be very effective and it makes perfect sense as to WHY it works. I immediately began to feel better (within 48 hours), then it took about 3 weeks for my migraines to completely disappear. They've been gone now for 7 months and more importantly, my energy and zest for life has returned, FULL FORCE. Bio-identical hormones, to me, are a miracle. I now take iodine for my thyroid, a little magnesium, and bioidentical estrogen and progesterone (as does Oprah Winfrey and Robin McGraw (Dr. Phils wife) - see the February edition of O Magazine). I've also learned to eat "Alkaline" which I also believe is beneficial (great book on this is "The Acid - Alkaline Food Guide" by Dr. Susan Brown). As well, a large Swedish study of over 28,000 women has shown that bioidentical hormones actually protect women against cancer and heart disease. Why would anyone take horse derived Premarin, when they could take a molecule that's exactly the same as the hormone your body naturally produces? Premarin contributes to cancer because your body cannot recognize this molecule. There's some GREAT information about bioidentical hormones on the YouTube videos. Have a look. I read the other review saying that the "company cannot be reached" however I've had no problem contacting them. People also have to understand that he and his company must get a great many emails and unless you have some huge staff, it's not always possible to answer every personal health question. All I can say is "THANK YOU, THANK YOU Dr. JONES ... you're literally a life saver!

5-0 out of 5 stars IT WORKS!!!!
The advice the Doctor tells you in this book WORKS!He also wrote a book about PMS and the advice given in that book WORKS as well.I won't tell you what he says to do just believe me when I say it does work.It isn't fair to him if I tell you what to buy..... he wrote the book he deserves the credit for the cure. The cost of the book is nothing since what he tells you to do really WORKS!!!!My daughter uses the vitamins he recommends for PMS and she has changed. She no longer suffers from PMS.The vitamins he recommends for migraines made mine disappear.Dr. Andrew Jones is amazing.....

1-0 out of 5 stars No Luck Here....
I get apprx. 3 severe migraines per month that each last 1 to 3 days. I bought the book and then the recommended products. I have tried the recommended treatment for two months (maybe a little longer). There has been absolutely no improvement to my migraines. I'll finish up the last of the progesterone, but I seriously doubt I'll buy more to give it more time to work. I feel like this is probably a scam, but I suppose you never know what will work for one person yet not another. ... Read more
