Book Description
JM’s love of the Halloween season was the inspiration for this book. The fact that it is her favorite holiday of the year, along with the fact that it’s her wedding anniversary, made creating this book a true delight. Enter Madam Witch’s world of Halloween. In the kitchen she concocts a brew of Black Spider Punch. Try a sample of potion called the Graveyard (drink if you dare). Smell the aroma of Bread Stick Bones baking in the oven. Watch out for the Snake Cake; it may slither across the counter! All things eerie are created in the kitchen of Madam Witch. Then of course what would Halloween be without decorations? There’s a sinister serpent wreath, a few ghost prints to frame and a witch apple doll to learn to create in Madam Witch’s craft section. Then after a long day of Halloween creativity, enjoy a soak in your own New Moon Milk Bath (one of Madam Witch’s favorite potions). Discover some history of Halloween, jokes to tickle the ghouls’ funny bones and a few other extras Madam Witch thought you would enjoy. Then have yourself a happy and bewitching Halloween, with a little help from Madam Witch. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! A great book for Halloween!
Patricia Rae Wolff is one of my favorite children's authors! Cackle Cook is a kid-pleaser with its gross-out recipe for Monster Stew. Children will find it easy to follow along--it's The Little Red Hen for monsters. An added bonus: kids can work on their ABCs along the way. Fabulous illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A zany and fun story
Patricia Rae Wolff's Cackle Cook's Monster Stew receives S.D. Schindler's amusing, fun illustrations as it tells of a creative monster cook and a pet monster on a search for some unusual ingredients. Poor Igor hates shopping for the illusive monster stew recipes - as much as his owner loves to cook it - in this zany and fun story. ... Read more

I was disappointed with this book. Its a wonderful idea to make a book like this but most of the recipes are not something that my family & i would use.The titles of the recipes are great, gnarled witch fingers, tongues on toast, brains on the half skull, etc. This book just needs some better recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of great (gross) recipes!

Arriman the Awful, Loather of Light and Wizard of the North, needs awife. How else can he have a wizard baby to carry on the family tradition of blighting and smiting, blasting and wuthering? The problem is, wizards can only marry one kind of person--a witch. Arriman dreads the thought. "A great black crone with warts and blisters in unmentionable places from crashing about on her broom! You want me to sit opposite one of those every morning eating my cornflakes?" But a witch it must be, so Arriman holds a contest to decide which witch. The local witches are all atwitter over what spell they'll perform for the contest--all except Belladonna, who is, to her great shame, a white witch. She looks rather like the girl on the Clairol Herbal Essence bottle, with a sweet face and flowing blonde hair. "There was usually something in Belladonna's hair: A fledgling blackbird parked there by its mother while she went to hunt for worms, a baby squirrel wanting somewhere safe to eat its hazel nuts, or a butterfly who thought she was a lily or a rose."

Black spells are cast, enchantments are woven, and even Belladonna manages to do a little damage in this wonderfully clever 1979 book by Eva Ibbotson (of The Secret of Platform 13). Young readers will delight in the way Ibbotson glories in the ghoulish and the gory--and in her engaging characters who are kindly and fiendish all at once. Which Witch (finally reissued in the United States) begs to be read aloud, with before-bed-length chapters and lots of opportunities for funny voices. (Ages 9 and older) --Claire DedererBook Description
Arriman the awful, the wizard of the North, announces a contest-the witch who performs the darkest piece of magic will be his wife. Belladonna is dying to win . . . but she's too good-hearted. Can she summon up the evil side in time to win the contest?

"If you have read all the Harry Potters and don't know how you'll survive until the next, you must try Eva Ibbotson." (Book Sense)

"A zestsful adventure, perfect for fans of 'Harry Potter'." (School Library Journal) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book when i read it when I was about ten years old.
I loved this book when i was younger. It was such amazing story, and made me want to read more from Ibbotson. The next year I went to the scolastics book fair at my school and picked up the book "The Secret of Platform 13" and thought it was very amazing also. I think people should stop comparing works to Harry Potter. Sure Harry Potter is amazing, and I am obsessed minus the fact that i've only read each book once which was when they each first came out, but you cannot compare another book to Harry Potter unless it is very similar to Harry Potter. Some people say that the books A Series of Unfortunate Events are just as good as Harry Potter, but their wrong. I am reading that series right now and it's nowhere near as good as Harry Potter.

I think you should definitely
read this book along with others
by Ibbotson.
thank you for your time,
Loran

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Ibbbotson
This book has excellent detail, suspense and excitement. It is a perfect book for harry potter lovers and fantasy mysteries. It is very enjoyable and loveable. I very much enjoyed the tryouts of the witches because of the suspense and action in what they do. There wasn't very much to dislike about the book except for the part that the beggining didn't attract me that much. This is my opinion of the book which witch? and it is an excellent book.I hope that if you read it you will enjoy it as much as I did

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for fans of Harry Potter!
This book is great because it's fun and exciting. When you get done on each chapter it makes you wonder what happens next. This book is great for Harry Potter fans because it has wizardy and mysteries in this book. The person who wrote this book made it go with the flow. The book made sense. The person who wrote this had good descrpitions on things and she made what she talked about specific.I personally like this book and I guarantee Harry Potter fans will like this book too! Also, probably other people who like mysteries and like reading the book more and more who would like to find the answers you are looking for in a book.

Which Witch?
By Eva Ibbotson
Reviewed by M. Lin
P.6

A handsome wizard of the north named Arriman the Awful has decided to find a wife. Many witches want to be the one true love, but which witch will it be? There were only seven proper witches: Mabel Wrack, the sea witch who was related to mermaids, but was part human and owns a familiar (creature that increases magic powers) that is an octopus, Ethel Feedbag, a country witch, who grew up looking like a pig owns a pig for a familiar, Nancy and Nora Shouter, the two twin witches that own chicken as familiars, think that a day without shouting at each other is a day lost, Mother Bloodwart, a cranky old witch who often changed into a coffee table and not know how to change back, owns flies for familiars, or Madam Olympia, the most powerful black enchantress who had many husbands, but all disappearing mysteriously and leaving her mounds of gold. Madame Olympia was envied for she had an aardvark, a powerful creature with a snout and sharp claws. The last witch was a white witch named Belladonna, who is despised because of being a good witch. She always wanted to be a black witch and she has fallen in love with Arriman the awful, but unfortunately, Arriman was only willing to marry a dark witch. Terance, a boy at an orphanage, is saved by Belladonna and become an assistant to help her become an evil witch. His worm, Rover, is discovered to be a familiar that can cause Belladonna to do evil magic. Rover, however, disappears and Belladonna has to wait helplessly for it to be found. All the witches had to perform some dark magic in the contest, but all the witches failed except for Madame Olympia who got nine out of ten as her score. Belladonna, having no choice, went up to try to perform the darkest magic of all, bringing back the dead. She succeeds, or she had thought, for Terance had hired an actor to pretend to be a dead person returning. She wins the contest and is allowed to marry Arriman. But later on, it is discovered that Madame Olympia had stolen Rover and was disqualified from the contest. Terance soon finds out that he can do magic as well, and that after accidentally changing his matron into a spider, that he found out he was the one who brought back the man from the dead when he was standing behind Belladonna during her turn, and that the actor for playing as the man never arrived to act. Though Belladonna was never able to become a black witch, she and Arriman fell in love with each other, and as usual, live happily ever after.
What I loved about the book was the humor and the things that happened during each witch's turn to perform. "Summoned here, I bid thee hearken, you have been to fetch the Kraken, Search the corners of the ocean-
She broke off, trying to find a rhyme for "ocean" and also wondering a bit weather and ocean really had corners." This part was extremely funny and you can't help but laugh. And after every performance, you just can't wait to see what is going to happen next.
What I didn't like about the book was that it started to rush through things near the end, like right after Belladonna won the contest, Arriman's ogre, Lester instantly jump to conclusions that Madame Olympia must have taken Rover and he just so happens to be right.
My Favorite part of the book was when Arriman had entered Belladonna's room. When he entered, there was Belladonna sitting in a bed. "The sun steaming through the east window had turned her hair into a shower of gold; her eyes were bright with happiness with blue as a summer sky, and she was singing a sweet and foolish song: the kind with roses in it and springtime and love. Rather a lot of love." the description was very beautiful and the picture matched the paragraph very well. There is no part I don't like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magical and Exciting
Which Witch? is a magical tale about a wizard who is looking for a wizard that can perform darker magic than he can.His advisors think he should marry a witch that can perform dark magic so he can have a baby who will be darker than him. So Arriman (the wizard's name) decided to hold a contest for the darkest witch. Whoever performs the darkest trick of magic will be his bride.
All the witches are excited, especially Belladona, a very young witch, but she doesn't know any dark magic because she's a good witch! But luckily she meets a boy with a worm. She thinks the worm can help her with dark magic so she takes the boy and the worm to the contest.

The boy decides that if Belladona wants to win she'll have to make a ghost come back to life. The boy doesn't think she can do it so he hires actors to pretend to be the ghost. But the actors don't show up.

This book so exciting I couldn't put it down.It has drama, magic, love and more! You can't stop there's too many questions to be answered. Will Belladona marry Arriman the Awful? Will Arriman find the one? Will the boy be okay? To find out, read Which,Witch? today!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Party Item
I loved this book because the recipes are simple, yet it offers some new twists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes and great design
We've purchased a number of martini and other drink recipe books before coming across this one.One of the best things about this book is its spiral design. It lays flat, which means you don't have to try to hold it open or prop it up while mixing up a drink. Can't tell you how frustrating it is trying to whip up a martini or other stylish drink while trying to hold a book open! This book has great recipes, both old and new, is organized by type of liquor and even gives you ideas for the best glass to serve your masterpieces in.I just purchased another copy to give as a wedding/shower gift for a young couple.

5-0 out of 5 stars They even got the Singapore Sling right!
This bartender guide is both colorful and full of photos. It's not also reasonable organized but has color codes for the different types of drinks (Gin, Vodka, etc.) to make it easy to navigate the cocktails. Also, I was happy to see a bartender guide that has the CORRECT Singapore Sling ingredients listed. So many others don't even have the real one used by the Raffles Hotel in Singapore. One thing that makes sense about this book, is that its spiral bound a real plus!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly informative guide for the first-timer or the enthusiast
I found a used copy of this book at a local bookstore, and bought it out of sheer curiosity. I knew nothing prior to mixing drinks or even how to use a shaker, and was thoroughly amused at how drinking enthusiasts around the world could come up with 780 unique -- and sometimes downright perverse and ridiculous -- names for the world's finest cocktails.

There are two things that I love about this book -- it's brilliantly arranged as a reference guide, and it's geared for both the entry-level hobbyist and the more experienced enthusiast in mind.

Unlike many other bartender guides that are tiny paperbacks or printed on thicker paper that is harder to flip-through, Salvatore Calabrese's book is built like a true index in mind: it's a hard-cover with spiral-bound pages inside printed on glossy color paper. The 780 drinks are divided into logical categories (brandy, rum, wine, vodka, shooters, punches, nonalcoholic, etc.) and each drink's mixing instructions are designed to be read in less than 30 seconds. As a quick reference, I have not seen a book that is better written with clarity and brevity in mind.

Any book I'm willing to pay for as an introduction into a hobby needs to me interested with the history, the basics on how-tos, and the fine science of becoming an enthusiast. The book's opening chapters cover everything from tools & equipment, glassware, and bar terminology to flavors & garnishes, proper techniques for juicing limes, and how to properly use ice!
Nearly every single recipe includes a brief history as to where the naming scheme caming from, and there's some description to the regional origins of certain spirits and bases as well.

I'm not planning on becoming a professional bartender, but if I were going to, I'd imagine this text would easily be one of the required reads and "keeper" books for someone truly interested in pursuing a long-term education into the fine art of drink mixing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Spooktacular finds and helpful hints
i found this book to be helpful for decorating and having the scavenger hunt which i hope is a hit at my party. the foods were okay, because i think when you're having an adult halloween party, you need to have less sugary foods and more grown-up foods so to speak. otherwise, it was fine. thank you

I love Halloween and had looked FOREVER to find a book to help with some ideas in the celebration and this book is it!This book gives ideas and step by step how to's in playing games, making recipes and creating props. Straightforward, easy, non-crafty and fun.Age limits are put on the games so you know which ones to use, or not to use.I have bought so many Halloween how to books that just sit on the shelf. This one does not!I have dog eared and paper clipped this one into tatters! This IS the book to buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Halloween Book for Kid's Halloween Party!
This year I purchased a number of books on Halloween in order to get more ideas for my annual Halloween party for children ages 2 to 8. This book is a gem, best of the batch. I was able to use at least 10 ideas from this book, including "Stick the Nose on the Pumpkin", "Bopping for Apples", "Halloween Hunt" "Witches Brew" punch, etc. These ideas are easy to use, and not time consuming, unlike the ones I found in other books... where the prime requirement seems to be having a lot of spare time to carry out their ideas. I will use this book over and over again in years to come!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great spooky ideas for the whole family.
