Students of Hungarian descend initiated that Hungarian be one of the possible choices for language requirements. The students’ role in the development of Hungarian language teaching at Penn became crucial. Along with the Beginner and Intermediate courses, Advanced, Business and Medieval Hungarian were offered, as well. With CGS’s active collaboration many “non-traditional” students were glad to discover Hungarian either to fulfill their language requirements or to start independent study programs. Penn’s Hungarian program assisted several students in research work in genealogy, Jewish studies, Eastern –European Studies, business and culture related interdisciplinary studies. Individual projects were always supported. Through extensive collaboration with Hungarian universities study abroad programs, internships, TESOL and other visiting opportunities can be arranged to extend the learning experience. Beginner Hungarian is offered at the PLC every year. The curriculum incorporates both semesters. The language instruction is based on the communicative teaching method. The students’ active involvement is essential in learning process. The language instructions are individualized and support language learners with different styles and expectations. Authentic audio, video and Internet access facilitates the learning experience.

    Extractions: Hungarian is a member of the Finno-Urgic family of languages. It is distantly related to Finnish, but is most closely related to Khanty and Mansi (which each have a few thousand speakers). Effectively, Hungarian is an isolate in Central Europe and unrelated to the Slavic, Germanic and Romance languages spoken in neighboring states (all of which are a part of the Indo-European language family). This make Hungarian a difficult language for a native English speaker to learn. So why, you may ask (as others have) am I learning it? First, it is a very interesting language-at least to somebody who is used to languages that have SVO word order, lots of prepositions, and grammatical gender-all pretty much absent from Hungarian. Second, some of my ancestry is Hungarian, and I became interested in speaking it since finding some information, in Hungarian, about a possible relative. Finally, as I learned more Hungarian I found more I wanted to learn. An unfortunate side-effect of being a language isolate is that little gets translated, and much of that selectively. Only a few U.S. universities offer instruction in Hungarian. Monika Pacziga, (PA-tzee-ga) an American studies master's degree student from Eötvös Lorand University in Budapest, will teach elementary Hungarian from 6 to 8:50 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays in room 4034 Wescoe Hall. "Probably less than 10 schools in the entire country have courses in Hungarian," said Frank Baron, KU professor of German. In the Midwest, only Colorado State University and Indiana University offer Hungarian. "Hungarian instruction is part of a long-range plan at KU to intensify and combine Hungarian and Austrian studies, which are now gaining greater current interest with the expected entry of Hungary into the European Common Market," Baron said.

The first book to address the issue was published in 1991 but was limited to the Hungarian language in Slovakia and Austria. In 1998 a series was launched under the title The Hungarian Language in the Carpathian Basin at the End of the 20 th Century , which will cover the Hungarians of Slovakia, Ukraine, Rumania, Yugoslavia, Slovenia and Austria. The present book is the third in this series. The author is professor of Hungarian linguistics at Comenius University, Bratislava, Slovakia. Adopting the guidelines in Hans Goebl et al., eds., Contact Linguistics, Vol. 2 (Berlin and New York: Mouton de Gruyter, 1997), the author presents a detailed analysis of the social, economic, cultural and political factors shaping the use of Hungarian in Slovakia. In chapter 1 he surveys the following ethnic groups in what is Slovakia today: Slovaks, Hungarians, Gypsies, Czechs, Ruthenians/Ukrainians, Germans, Poles, Croats and Jews. Chapter 2 treats in detail the Hungarian national minority's demographic situation and geographical, social, economic and cultural characteristics, as well as its religious profile, sense of identity, and ethnographic and linguistic composition. Chapter 3 is devoted to (Czecho)Slovak policies affecting the Hungarian minority in the fields of economy, education, cultural policy, religion, and legislation. The next chapter deals with the effect of various language laws, such as the 1990 law on the official language of Slovakia, the 1995 law on the state language of Slovakia, and the 1999 law on minority language use in the official sphere. The analysis of this legislation is supplemented by a detailed exposition of the de facto language rights situation in Slovakia between 1920 and 1999.

The chapter on geography and demography shows, among other things, that in 1991 Hungarians constituted 3.3% of the population of Yugoslavia, and 16.9% of Vojvodina.
