Extractions: This section is meant to present a broad brush overview of several aspects of the BSM Program: Participant Profile During the past decade, participation in the BSM Program has grown to enroll thirty-five to forty-five students each semester. The mean home school grade point average of a participant is just over 3.7 on a scale of 4, with mathematics grade point slightly higher. Other than the fact that participants are talented and motivated in mathematics they are the most heterogeneous group I have ever been associated with. In general BSM students are an adventurous lot who tend to engage their chosen activities with spirited determination and energy. Several recent participants have used their ``spare time'' to play in one of the Liszt Academy's orchestras, others have served Hungarian relief organizations aiding refugees from Romania and countries of the former Yugoslavia, several have joined sports teams in swimming, soccer, fencing; all have taken the opportunity to investigate various parts of Hungary and the surrounding European countries. Most of our students attend their first opera in Budapest and many become devotees of the classical musical and intellectual culture which is still vibrant and affordable. Although the BSM Program does not organize outings we do post information concerning cultural events and show students where they can purchase tickets, but little encouragement is needed. These students are competent and engaged!

His father, Laszlo Birinyi Sr., had led the boy and his family out of Hungary during World War II. After spending a tumultuous few years navigating the geographic and political uncertainty of Europe, they finally found security in America. "Like so many Eastern Europeans, we sought to escape the conflicts," Birinyi Jr. said. "We were focused on survival." As refugees, the Birinyi family traveled through Europe, trying to find a safe place to settle. Even after the war ended, they chose not to return to Hungary, unwilling to become a part of the Communist regime that had taken control of the nation. But prior to the beginning of the Cold War, European host nations wanted refugees to return to their homes. The Birinyis received an offer of sponsorship from the Church World Service giving them the alternative to immigrate to America. The younger Birinyi grew up in Pennsylvania, arriving in Chapel Hill in 1962 as a freshman.

Extractions: 5th century The Hungarian tribes left the area of the Urals. They passed along the Volga and the Caspian Sea. After several hundred years of wandering, they reached the Carpathian Basin. Stephen was converted to Christianity. After his death, he was canonized. An abbey was set up at Tihany. The foundation charter was drawn up on the northern shore of Lake Balaton. This is the earliest written record extant in the Hungarian language. The Mongolian Tatars devastated the country. Their presence, which lasted a year, halted development for at least a century. After the warfare with the Hungarians, the Tatars did not continue towards the west. The Turks occupied Buda. Hungary was split into three parts. The Habsburg governed the western part of the country, the central area was ruled by the Turks, and the south-east Transylvanian principality (today part of Roumania) for a long time was the citadel of Hungarian culture. Buda was recaptured from the Turks. (The Turks - similarly to the Tartars - could only advance in Europe to the territory of Hungary. Here they were faced by obstacles, after which no strength was left for the siege of Vienna.) Therefore, at the Frankfurt Book Fair we would like to present the place of Hungary within the cultural context of Europe and we wish to highlight the fertile artistic exchange between Hungary and the rest of Europe. On the other hand, by presenting a wide range of artistic works, we would like to bring into spotlight some faces of Hungarian culture still unknown abroad. Thus, the organisers achieving the motto of the central theme Hungary without boundaries in two distinct manners. Hungary is open outwards, to the neighbouring peoples and cultures and at the same time it is open towards accepting all artistic trends and currents. Hungarian literature will therefore be represented at the Book Fair not only by well-known names, but also through younger authors, who are less recognised abroad. Beside a rich offer of new fiction, a variety of other literary genres will also represent Hungary. Hungarian fine arts will also be comprehensively represented. Some memories reserved in the Hungarian Rune Writing point us to the nations of the ancient Middle-East. The relation of the Christian and the previous culture is a very argued problem of the Hungarian history. The question arose often whether spreading the Christianity meant destroying the old culture. It is an interesting thing that the rune writing is known from not the relics of the pre-Christian Hungarians, but the notes of the Christians, mainly the priests and the monks. In the middle ages the Hungarian church widely used the runic writing. Up to the XIVth century the so called "pálos rovásírás" (Pauline Rune Writing) was more frequently used, after then the so called "székely rovásírás" (Sekler Rune Writing) was generally practised. The Pálos means the name of a religious order, established by Hungarians. Székely, or Sekler refers to Hungarians in Eastern Hungary, currently the land of the Hungarian speaking Székelys, an area that today is part of Romania. Of course it does not mean that the Sekler rune writing did not exist before, but we have no scientific proof yet. Based on the chronicles from the Middle Ages, we have known only the Sekler Rune Writing. Székely Rune Writing have been used in Transylvania (currently in Romania) by the Székelys. The Székely Rune Writing was used only as a secondary, non-official writing. However, as the historians started to explore the Hungarian past, more and more runic written notations appeared that cannot be read by the Székely alphabet. Since this type of runicwriting was used mainly by the Pauline monks, it is called

The contacts cross industrial design, the applied arts and architecture are less well documented. The project will seek to redress this balance and raise general awareness of the Hungarian contribution to pan-European developments in architecture and design. One of the main objectives of the project is to generate research and teaching materials which can be used in the work of the collaborating institutions.
