A translation of this web page into French has been prepared by Anne Dicky at the University of Bordeaux. People have been using mechanical devices to aid calculation for thousands of years. For example, the abacus probably existed in Babylonia (present-day Iraq) about 3000 B.C.E. The ancient Greeks developed some very sophisticated analog computers. In 1901, an ancient Greek shipwreck was discovered off the island of Antikythera. Inside was a salt-encrusted device (now called the Antikythera mechanism ) that consisted of rusted metal gears and pointers. When this c. 80 B.C.E. device was reconstructed, it produced a mechanism for predicting the motions of the stars and planets. Eventually, in 1959 the Met Office purchased its first computer - a Ferranti Mercury, which the office named Meteor. With glowing valves and copious volumes of paper tape, the Met Office had entered the computer age.

The list is divided into five categories or generations based on the type of technology used in the construction of the computers or computing devices. Up until the outbreak of the Second World War, computing devices were mechanical or electro-mechanical. The first "known" mechanical calculator (aside from the abacus) was Wilhelm Schickard's "Calculating Clock" (1623). This device was lost early on so for many years it was believed that a calculator invented by Blaise Pascal in 1642 was the first mechanical calculator. Pascal's Pascaline could only add and subtract and although Pascal tried to market his invention, its high cost and technical unreliability did not make it a "best seller". Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz also invented a calculator, one that could also multiply (using repeated addition). Again, the technology of the time did not make for a reliable device although Liebniz's ideas were basically sound. Charlies Babbage, a 19th century "polymath" devised a calculating machine, the Difference Engine I (1823) which could be used to mechanically generate mathematical tables. He even obtained funding from the British government to build it. Unfortunately, the machine was never completed partly because of the technological diffculties inherent in constructing so complex a mechanical device and perhaps partly due to Babbage's becoming interested in buildling a more ambituous calculating machine, the Analytic Engine (also never constructed). The Analytic Engine was essentially a general purpose calculating device. It had a "store" which could store numbers and a "mill" which would perform a sequence of calculations. A friend of his, Augusta Ada Byron, later the Countess of Lovelace, became interested in Babbage's work and did much to popularize his device. She even wrote a "program" for the Analytic Engine and thus she is considered to be the first computer programmer.

Intel created the 4004 processor - a 4 bit microprocessor that had more use in programmable calculators than anything close to what we would call a computer today, but you've gotta start somewhere. The claim to fame for the 4004 (besides being the predecessor to the 8008, 8080, and later 8088 all the way up to the Pentiums of today) was Intels first bug (they have a long history of bugs), that caused the machine to burn up I don't mean just run so hot that you need special coolers and fans, like most Intel chips I mean literally burn itself out Computers have instruction sets values you send the computer to command it to do different things (do math, jump somewhere, do some conditional tests, etc.), and there are lots of possibilities. These values (instructions) are called machine code and are just groups of bits (zero's and one's) making larger numbers - usually represented in a different counting system called hexadecimal (base16)
