Galleries are updated sometimes to improve conservation conditions. Also check days and times of opening. Some museums close when you least expect it such as on a Friday. Many venues have internet sites with information on opening hours and fees. Some venues charge an entrance fee, but some publicly owned venues in the UK now have free entrance once again. If you wear heels I suggest you take a pair of low flatter shoes or check beforehand that the venue will let you in if they are preserving original wooden floors. All National Trust properties like the base of a shoe heel to be at least about 3 cm square. I was once refused entry because of wearing a heel deemed too damaging, luckily I had a spare pair of flat sandals in the car and soon caught up with my group. Some of these museums have direct web links and others are reviewed better on a secondary site. I have not had time to edit it thoroughly or add in the footnotes and references. These will follow in due course. Duncan Goldie-Scot The Life and Activities of Sir Ashton Lever of Alkrington, 1729-1788 By W. J. SMITH, A.T.D. Sir Darcy Lever c1730 by William Hogarth On 5 March 1728/9, Dorothy, wife of Darcy Lever of Alkrington, gave birth to her third child, a son, at Alkrington Hall. Two weeks later the child was baptised at Middleton Church, his parents giving him the name Ashton, his mother's family name. Darcy's bride was Dorothy, daughter and co-heiress of the Reverend William Ashton, Rector of Prestwich, on whose death in 1731, Darcy and his wife inherited £4,000, and, by a codicil, the Ashton Chapel in Prestwich church was left to Dorothy Lever and her son Ashton and heirs male. The money inherited was put to good use when he turned his attention to the improvement of his Alkrington estate. In the valley of the Wince Brook he built three farmhouses which all carried the inscription 'D.L.D. 1731 ', and two years later a cottage was built in Alkrington Park. The old bridge over the river Irk, which carried the drive from the old Manchester to Rochdale turnpike to the hall, was widened and a stone built into the downstream side of the bridge to commemorate this and the degree of LL.D., conferred on him on 11 July 1733. Two years later a new hall arose on the site of the earlier building.

These museums include Danish Royal collections from the 17th and 18th Century, but most material has been acquired during the 19th and the 20th Century. The museums are important reference collections and research centres as well as public museums with exhibitions. The Geological Museum has permanent public exhibitions, including: "Minerals", "Meteorites", "The Geology of Greenland" and "The Origin of Man". A temporary exhibition: "The Earth and the oldest History of Life" opened in October 1997. The exhibition on "The Geology of Denmark" is presently being renewed. The Zoological Museum has three permanent public exhibitions: "Animals of Denmark", "From Pole to Pole" and "The Ocean Hall". Currently, the museum has a temporary exhibition of animals and their skeletons, to be replaced by an exhibition of fabulous animals.

Library of Congress Revelations from the Russian Archives After the fall of Communism in 1991, a movement to make previously top secret papers available was undertaken. This remarkable and progressive exhibit (also shown in Moscow) makes many important 20th century documents about the workings of the Soviet-era government available for public viewing. The Library of Congress lays this virtual exhibit out in a well planned tour.
