    Extractions: Text only Version Herbs and plants have been used for thousands of years to prevent sickness, cure disease, promote better health, and enhance meals. They also have a darker side with uses such as poisonings. A good percentage of modern day pharmaceutical are derivatives from botanical species that humans have been using for many generations. There is still thousands of plants and plant life that we as people haven't explored there full potential as a source of medication, and as possibly a new food. This is not to say that you should go out and start eating everything you see growing around you. That method of determining if something was edible was common place thousands of years ago with sometimes fatal results. Now that I have said that a bit of studying on the subject and most importantly a person you can take the plant life you have collected to, and you will be ready to start enjoying plants, herbs, and mushrooms that you have gathered in the wild. For the studying it would be best to get a pocket book written on plants, herbs, and mushrooms indigenous to the area you live. There is no point for a beginning botanist or mycologist to memorize characteristics of plants or mushrooms they may never see in there lives. It is best to select a book that shows color photographs over one with only drawings. Also get a book that shows the deadly plants, and mushrooms , and compares them to the edible and medicinal varieties in your area. Know the deadly ones best, if you can identify a deadly plant by sight the chances of that plant causing you any harm are very slim. Some variety of deadly plants are so closely related to there edible cousins that even experienced collectors have to perform lab tests on them to distingue the two varieties apart. These plants are best left to the experts to cultivate as mistaking identity has led to death in the past.

    Extractions: Ritual and Ceremonial Uses of Herbs Centuries ago herbs were used for more than just seasoning soup. Matter of fact, herbs as seasonings weren't used much at all. But the witches, the wise ones, the ancients, they all knew the magickal use of herbs. They used herbs in potions, incenses and amulets to ward off evil, attract prosperity, protect a child and heal illnesses. Much of this lore was forgotten, but fortunately for our generations, not all of it has been lost. Because of today's awareness of Earth's fragility, we modern witches, pagans and wise ones are once again focusing on the gifts that the Mother has given us. Just what is magick? I have used ritually consecrated bollines and just plain-old kitchen knives, I've used mortars and pestles and a pottery bowl and the back of a spoon. In my opinion, it's not how fancy, or how much the tools cost that are important, it's the focus and intent of the practitioner that "make it work". However, there are some things that will make things a little easier or possibly more esthetically pleasing! Mortar and Pestle for grinding the herbs, a special knife for harvesting your own herbs, a non-metallic pot for your brews. Maybe a special basket or tray you reserve especially for preparation?
