Extractions: EARLY KEYBOARD INSTRUMENTS My double manual Flemish harpsichord was made in 1978 by the Canadian builder Edward Turner. The instrument was originally built for the Notre Dame-trained organist and teacher Brock Burroughs (1951-1995). It is a reconstruction of the harpsichord by Ioannes Ruckers dated 1638 in the Russell Collection in Edinburgh (designated 1638b IR by Grant O'Brien in his Ruckers catalogue and shown below). Turner had the opportunity to study his model closely while he was the consultant draughtsman for the Russell Collection for two six-week stints in 1975 and 1977 (the first visit funded by the Bronfman family foundation and the second by the Leon and Thea Koener Foundation and the Canada Council). Copies of the measured drawings, photographs and data sheets made by Turner at this time can still be ordered from the Friends of St Cecilia's Hall and the Russell Collection . Turner modified his copy in two ways: he restored decorative elements which had been lost from the original over the passage of time and, in order to accommodate a wider repertoire, he expanded its range and altered its disposition as though it had undergone a petit ravalement around 1700. Turner made the handsome oak stand as a reconstruction of the lost stand of the original (perhaps following the model of the 1620 Andreas Ruckers harpsichord in the Berlin Musikinstrumentenmuseum). He reinstated the characteristic Ruckers key arcades and the marbling of the case which had been covered over in the original by later decorative schemes (most recently bronze powder arabesques on a black lacquer background). The geometric parchment rose presently found in the soundboard of 1638b IR is clearly a later replacement of the original gilded lead rose (which was probably taken to be used in a non-Ruckers instrument in the hope of passing it off as a more valuable Ruckers). Turner designed his own replacement rose using the characteristic Ruckers device of a harp-playing angel, but substituting his own initials for those of Ioannes Ruckers.

Extractions: Bloomberg's on-line currency calculator order by e-mail print order form VAT information In the Dolmetsch Collection, housed at the Horniman Museum, South London, the Green Harpsichord, made in 1896 at the instigation of William Morris, shows how Dolmetsch chose the 'historical' over the 'modernistic' approach of Pleyel. In the 1920s, Dolmetsch recorded Bach's 48 Preludes and Fugues on this large oak double strung clavichord, strongly influenced by late German makers contemporary with Bach. We also make 'historical models' - a Kirkman single manual (based on an 18th century original) and a Taskin double manual (one of the noblest harpsichords from the French high baroque). Dolmetsch's experience as a restorer of original instruments, gave him the knowledge to satisfy the burgeoning interest in early music at the start of the twentieth century, in which movement he stands as a progressive figure, as well as preparing him as a designer and maker of new models. We still make many models he and his son Carl Dolmetsch designed but we are also restorers and makers of 'copies' of surviving instruments.
