Exploring the cultural dimensions of U.S. contact with Haiti during the occupation and its aftermath, Mary Renda shows that what Americans thought and wrote about Haiti during those years contributed in crucial and unexpected ways to an emerging culture of U.S. imperialism. Extractions: HAITI CONTINUES TO EMERGE WITH VODOU Haiti is a nation struggling to emerge from the shackles of colonial rule. Although its freedom was purchased 200 years ago from the French, a new discursive colonization took place, the colonization that results from the constraints of a dominant, hegemonic cultural narrative. In a very real sense, Haitians discarded one dominant narrative only to discover another lurking below the surface. Hurston (1939) chronicles this change when she states, "Haiti has always been two places. First it was the Haiti of the masters and the slaves. Now it is the Haiti of the wealthy and educated mulattoes and the Haiti of the blacks" (p. 73). Hurston also illustrates the regulated class structure that is legitimated by the current social meta-narrative. This current meta-narrative is merely a darker shaded continuation of French rule. Ironically, former Haitian slaves have adopted the power positions previously enjoyed by the French. While the faces have changed, the hierarchical colonial meta-narrative has not. Although the larger hegemonic order in Haiti is of Western descent, it still shares stories and ideas with African societies. However, because Haiti has the distinction of being the "only nation in world history to be created by slaves," it will undoubtedly have some stories of its own (Mintz, 1995, p. 73). Consequently, it will represent its African status differently. Colonial cultural critic F. Fanon theorizes that the prominent influence in shaping the psyche of the black [Haitian] mind, and consequently how this mind creates society, is colonial rule. Colonial rule teaches what is desirable, what determines success, without regard to the culture of the colonized. As a result, colonized people see their future reflected in the faces of colonial power. Fanon (1967) chronicles this process when he states:
