4-0 out of 5 stars It's Alright
This book it full of useful information.Unfortunatley, very very full.It is a un-interesting read and isn't very easy to understand.I don't think I would have bought it had I known it would be so hard to keep my attention on.I will however keep it, because it is so full of information.I recommend this book to anyone that needs detailed information, very detailed.Maybe I'll give it over the winter for me to push my way through it.

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to get this book and try gardening with this method!
My purchase of the book this time around was simply to restock my library and to share with my community garden team.I saw John Jeavons speak at a fair in California about 20 years ago and thought what the heck, I've got to try this.It worked so well I had people from all over Mendocino, Ca. coming to look at my garden; things grew huge and happy with no pesticides or non-organic fertilizers!I was amazed and have been using this method ever since.I now live in Texas and gardening is a real challenge here due to heat, sun and wind, but the method works tried and true even under these conditions. You don't have to follow everything in the book (planting on moon cycles, for example); planting on centers alone will radically change your garden and increase your yield from anything you plant using this method (flowers, vegetables, cover crops, etc).It is ideal for small or large space gargening; we're using it in our large community garden.Soil is the "sponge" your plants will grow in and this book really teaches you how to care for it with charts, illustrations and easy to follow instructions. The reference charts are an amazing wealth of information; I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A *must have* if you're serious about growing your own food
This book is the bible for those of us that are serious about raising our own food.
You simply must have this book if your goal is to grow your own food, it's that simple.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great information
I really like this book so far. I have read it and plan to read it again since it has so much information to absorbe. I found it to be extremly helpful and has wonderful information. Not only does it tell you the best way to prepare the soil it also tells you how to keep the soil up, companion planting, garden set up for the first few years and so much more.
What I did not like was that it would sometimes give you a nice tid-bit of information but then refers you to another book or artical that it came from if you want the rest of the information or "further" informtaion.
All in all, I think its a pretty good book with a lot of great information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Intensive gardening
This book takes the concept of Square Foot Gardening andreally expands on the idea. You always start with the soil. This author makes it seem easy to double dig garden beds. This is an ancient technique going back to ancient Greece and China. The theory is that if the soil is loose and aerated to a depth of 24" or so the roots will grow deeper, and be stronger. Having used this technique myself I know that I have always gotten a higheryield in the beds that have been double dug.

I think that this author gives long time gardeners some ideas for consideration, and he also gives novice gardeners a plan to follow. And he always goes back to the soil, building it year after year, until it will be black gold.

Scenes of starvation have drawn the world's attention to Africa's agricultural and environmental crisis. Some observers question whether this continent can ever hope to feed its growing population. Yet there is an overlooked food resource in sub-Saharan Africa that has vast potential: native food plants. Africa has more than 2,000 native grains and fruits--"lost" species due for rediscovery and exploitation. This volume focuses on native cereals, presenting information on where and how they are grown, harvested, and processed, their benefits and limitations as a food source, and the the futures of each grain. ... Product Description
A backyard field of grains? Yes, absolutely! Wheat and corn are rapidly replacing grass in the yards of dedicated locavores across the country. For adventurous homeowners who want to get in on the movement, Homegrown Whole Grains is the place to begin.

Growing whole grains is simpler and more rewarding than most people imagine. With as little as 1000 square feet of land, backyard farmers can grow enough wheat to harvest 50 pounds in a single afternoon - and those 50 pounds can be baked into 50 loaves of fresh bread.

In addition to providing information on wheat and corn, Homegrown Whole Grains includes complete growing, harvesting, and threshing instructions for barley, millet, oats, rice, rye, spelt, and quinoa, and lighter coverage of several specialty grains. Readers will also find helpful tips on processing whole grains, from what to look for in a home mill to how to dry corn and remove the hulls from barley and rice.

Chapters for each grain include inventive recipes for cereals, desserts, casseroles, salads, soups and stews, and, of course, home-baked breads, the crowning achievement of the home grain grower. Sara Pitzer shares dozens of ideas for using whole grains - from cooking sturdy wheat berries in a slow cooker to malting barley for homebrewed beer. Whether milled into nutritional flours or used in any of their unmilled states, wheat, barley, quinoa, and the other grain crops are healthful additions to every diet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Starvation in America
For those who rely on the system to meet there needs - starvation. Those who won't grow their own food.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best book available
I think this is the best book available on this topic and it is really written for backyarders. There are even figures on possible yields given.
There is a lot of variety of grains covered. It is really a hands-on book.
What I don't like are the recipes, because they often refer to more refined grain products instead of the stuff you harvest yourself.
And the metric conversion is missing, this is especially disturbing with the growing temperatures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!!!!!!!!!
An easy to understand guide to some well know and some not so well known grains for the backyard gardener, highly recommended!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, concise
This book is exactly what I wanted: a quick guide to growing grains at home. She is an excellent writer and I like how she is realistic about the effort and difficulty required to process some of the crops. You can tell that she has done all of this many times and has observed other people doing it, and she knows where the problems will arise, especially in the discouragement department. The list of seed sources in the back is very useful. When I got this book I opened it up and read it through and had trouble putting it down. Thanks, Ms. Pitzer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Basic Source
Sara Pitzer makes the growing of grain comprehensible and easy for those who have never tried it. There is good information on types of grain, the forms it is sold in, and detailed instructions for culture, including spacing of seed and rows (this is hard to find info). Most info on the web is aimed at farmers with tractors and seeders, and for cultivating acre sized plots. This book will be helpful to those with smaller plots. There are many recipes in the book, something I could have done without, but others may find useful. There is also excellent info on how to purchase the correct grain mill to grind fresh flour. I would say this book is well worth the purchase price and fun to read. ... Read more

Product Description

Baking with whole-grain flours used to be about making food that was good for you, not food that necessarily tasted good, too. But Kim Boyce truly has reinvented the wheel with this collection of 75 recipes that feature 12 different kinds of whole-grain flours, from amaranth to teff, proving that whole-grain baking is more about incredible flavors and textures than anything else.
When Boyce, a former pastry chef at Spago and Campanile, left the kitchen to raise a family, she was determined to create delicious cakes, muffins, breads, tarts, and cookies that her kids (and everybody else) would love. She began experimenting with whole-grain flours, and Good to the Grain is the happy result. The cookbook proves that whole-grain baking can be easily done with a pastry chef’s flair. Plus, there’s a chapter on making jams, compotes, and fruit butters with seasonal fruits that help bring out the wonderfully complex flavors of whole-grain flours.

4-0 out of 5 stars a rustic, homey, comforting blend of recipes that would please anyone's sweet tooth
Yum! Good-for-you baking that's good in your mouth, too! //Good to the Grain// is written by pastry chef Kim Boyce who once worked at LA's famed Spago restaurant. Today, she's a mom who wants to create healthy baked goods for her family. She wrote //Good to the Grain// for the home cook, building standard snacks, desserts, and breakfast items from nutritious whole grain flours rather than processed white flour. She further lightens the load by reducing the processed white sugar traditionally found in baked goods. Boyce doesn't expect home cooks to read her book from cover to cover before baking. Therefore, she wisely repeats helpful tips in every recipe where they are relevant.

The result: a rustic, homey, comforting blend of recipes that would please anyone's sweet tooth. Her recipes include practical homemade substitutions to the world of processed food found on grocery shelves. Her array of home-baked cereals includes Graham Nuts (Boyce's take on a popular breakfast cereal). She also offers a host of muffins (Ginger Peach), waffles (Carrot and Corn Flour), cookies (Honey Hazelnut), and snacks (Soft Rye Pretzels). Using flours ranging from whole wheat to kamut, she leaves no grain unbaked. And you'll thank her for it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Healthy Baking
Traditional baking with plain flour now in the past since diagnosed with Diabetes. "Good to the Grain" educated me as to the use of whole-grain flour products. Delicious, nutritious recipes! Also, simply a beautiful book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious recipes!
This is a gorgeous book.I love the photography, and the fact that most (but not all) of the recipes include photos. There's also information on each flour featured at the beginning of that chapter, laying out the general flavor, uses, and cautions. This is nice because it provides info for substitutions (i.e. if I can't lay my hands on one of the flours) and just the general results one can expect if they aren't used to working with a particular flour.

The flours featured are:
whole wheat
amaranth
barley
buckwheat
corn
kamut
multigrain
oat
quinoa
rye
spelt
teff

There's also a chapter at the end on jams and compotes, which looks amazing!

So far, I've only tried one recipe but I was super happy with it.I made the whole wheat chocolate chip cookies, and loved them. You would never know these are 100% whole wheat with no white flour! The cookies are gorgeous, not too sweet, and the whole wheat flour lends a lovely nutty flavor without making the cookies taste "healthy."The only change I made was to make the cookies smaller - for me, 3 T of dough is way too much unless you're going into the bakery business!I'm also looking forward to making the Sweet Potato Muffins, Muscovado Sugar Cake, Strawberry Barley Scones, and Figgy Buckwheat Scones at some point in the future.Yum!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pictures are amazing
This book will MAKE YOU want to bake- even if you don't. The pictures alone are reason to purchase. :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Good & Grainy!
I liked how this book got me thinking and more creative with baking. I like to make as much from scratch as possible as opposed to buying processed, packaged food, and this book helped get a whole lot more whole grains into our diet. The bonus? So far, everything has tasted good and without tasting like you're eating a brown paper bag. The chapters are arranged by flour type, so it's easy to find a tasty recipe with whatever you have on hand. ... Read more

Product Description
The food supply to an expanding world population is based on grain crops, i.e. crops harvested for their seeds. Therefore, understanding the process of seed growth and its regulation is crucial in our efforts to increase production, in order to meet the needs of that population. Yield is determined by the ability of crop plants to use their assimilatory processes such as photosynthesis and also the biosynthetic processes in the seed, which are partly regulated within the seed itself. This book examines the determination of grain crop yield from a new and unique perspective, by concentrating on the influence of the seed. All aspects of seed growth and development are described, including environmental and genetic effects on growth rate and length of filling period. The effect of the seed on the two main yield components, individual seed weight and number of seeds per unit area, is then discussed. Finally, the concepts and models developed are evaluated in terms of crop management. The book is essential reading for those concerned with seed science and crop yield, including agronomists, crop physiologists, plant breeders, and extension workers. It will also be a valuable source of information for lecturers and graduate students of agronomy and plant physiology. ... Read more

Product Description
The attainment of food self-sufficiency has been a major goal of developing countries over the past 25 years. Yet, in the 1980s, most of these countries have increased, often dramatically, their dependence on food imports. Within this context, the authors assess the implications for producer welfare of the changes in grain production and consumption in developing countries from 1960 to 1985 - changes in grains produced, who produces them, who buys them and to what end. As developing economies are integrated into the world commodity markets, argue the authors, they tend increasingly toward substitution of grains in production: feed crops for animals displace food crops for people. There is also a corresponding shift from labour-intensive farming to mechanized agriculture. As a result, not only does food dependency increase - as measured by continuing growth in imports and foreign trade imbalances - but nutritional improvements are also forestalled. The authors' analysis of changing patterns of grain cultivation aims to identify how these lead to substantially altered patterns of nutrition, employment generation and income distribution. ... Product Description

Until recently, breeding efforts in mass produced food crops centered on high yield production while sacrificing flavor, taste and other quality traits. Now, more emphasis is being placed on the enhancement of nutritional and medicinal properties of the food crops. Aside from merely being considered a source of food, crops are today being looked from a health benefit perspective and even from an environmental standpoint. This volume looks at the use of crops for a myriad of purposes, including the prevention and/or mitigation of various diseases, vaccine and antigen production, biofuel production, and the suppression of weeds.
