Yet we still know little about how it affects real people in real places on a daily basis because most of our knowledge comes from scientific studies that try to estimate impacts and project future climate scenarios. This book is different, illustrating in vivid detail how people in the Andes have grappled with the effects of climate change and ensuing natural disasters for more than half a century. In Peru's Cordillera Blanca mountain range, global climate change has generated the world's most deadly glacial lake outburst floods and glacier avalanches, killing 25,000 people since 1941. As survivors grieved, they formed community organizations to learn about precarious glacial lakes while they sent priests to the mountains, hoping that God could calm the increasingly hostile landscape. Meanwhile, Peruvian engineers working with miniscule budgets invented innovative strategies to drain dozens of the most unstable lakes that continue forming in the twenty first century.

But adaptation to global climate change was never simply about engineering the Andes to eliminate environmental hazards. Local urban and rural populations, engineers, hydroelectric developers, irrigators, mountaineers, and policymakers all perceived and responded to glacier melting differently-based on their own view of an ideal Andean world. Disaster prevention projects involved debates about economic development, state authority, race relations, class divisions, cultural values, the evolution of science and technology, and shifting views of nature. Over time, the influx of new groups to manage the Andes helped transform glaciated mountains into commodities to consume. Locals lost power in the process and today comprise just one among many stakeholders in the high Andes-and perhaps the least powerful. Climate change transformed a region, triggering catastrophes while simultaneously jumpstarting modernization processes. great map
great map for the Northern part of Glacier.Did a 4 day/3 night trip this summer there & map was very handy!NG makes great maps that are useful for the novice hiker.

Decent map, lacks trail distances
I originally bought Trails Illustrated Yosemite National Park Map, which was great. My favorite part of it was that it showed you exactly how long part of a trail was, so you could plan far ahead how far you were willing to go and when to turn back. I was very disappointed when I discovered that this map did not have these on there. It's very difficult to determine how long parts of a trail are, especially in regions of dense switchbacks. I can't compare to other companies' maps, but this is nothing like the Yosemite Park map.

Does NOT include any part of Capitol Reef NP
I ordered this map because I need a Topo of Capitol Reef National Park.Despite the description and title reflecting that Capitol Reef is included, no part of the park is on this map.Had to return.

durable map with accurate trail information
I like to hike in the national parks and use Trails Illustrated maps when they are available. Trail books often have small maps of the trails they describe, and those maps are fine for short hikes, but it's a good idea to have a larger topographic map for longer hikes. TI maps are durable and have a water resistant coating. (Good for when you get caught in the rain; probably less so if you fall in a creek.) TI maps mark the trails and their topographic features. The elevation markings give you a good idea of how steep a portion of a trail is. I've used TI's Glacier/Waterton map for several trails and always found them to be accurate and helpful.

I recently purchased this 2004 revision. Unfolded, the map paper is the same size as the 2000 revision, but feels substantially heavier. The park map, however, is now a bit bigger and is split with the north half of the park on one side and the south on the other (with a generous overlap between the two). The written information about the park that was previously on the back is still present, but is reduced in size and located in several smaller boxes spread around the map. An improved feature of this revision is the inclusion of more area beyond the park boundaries.A bit more area is covered on the west side of Waterton, but a lot more area is covered to the south and west of Glacier.This includes the area between Whitefish Lake, Columbia Falls, and Kalispell, as well as the Flathead National Forest and the Great Bear Wilderness.I don't use it, but this version indicates that it is GPS compatible with a full UTM grid.

TI's Glacier/Waterton map is worth having if you plan to do any hikes longer than a few miles. The 2004 revision is a good buy, particularly if you have an older version that is showing some wear. If your older revision is in good shape (they are durable after all!) you can probably get by with it.

Wonderful History !!
I'll be visiting Glacier Nat'l Park this summer for the first time.I bought this book in preparation for my trip, and am I glad that I did !It is a wonderful history of the area as told through biographies some of the earlier people, both Blackfeet Indiansand Whites.Many of those biographies interlock through marriage, family relations, or friendship. The writing is clean, and unembellished, and includes many first hand accounts. There is no need for embellishment. Bittersweet recollections told by talented storytellers

I'm usually not so fond of "Indian myths" and similar collections, as they are often written in a stilted language or are poorly translated.This book is a wonderful exception.Schultz writes it as a series of diary entries as his Blackfoot friends tell stories in the lodge or around the fire at the end of the day.He has managed to keep the compelling style of his original material, told by talented story tellers.

Schultz was born to a wealthy family in upstate New York in 1859, but his wanderlust took him west.He married a Blackfoot woman and stayed with the tribe for several decades until fleeing to California after a legal run-in with Montana game wardens.From the evidence in this book, he was accepted as a tribal member, and he always refers to the Blackfoot as "his people," while whites were not.

The stories run the gamut from tribal history to legend and myth.Most sound as if they are embellished stories of real events.Collectively they convey something of Blackfoot culture, daily life, and beliefs.

Underneath the stories lies a deep sadness.The Blackfoot tribe has lost two-thirds to three-fourths of its members.Though the tribe still hunts there surreptitiously, Glacier National Park has become a tourist destination instead of tribal hunting grounds.The old ways are dying with the storytellers. ... Canadian Mystery
In the Shadow of the Glacier (2007) takes place in the small mountain town of Trafalgar, British Columbia, Canada. When the first murder in rememberable history occurs, veteran Detective Sergeant John Winters, a homicide detective relocated from Vancouver, is partnered with enthusiastic rookie constable Molly Smith, born and raised in Trafalgar. The victim, Reg Montgomery, was right in the middle of a town conflict. An American Vietnam draft dodger has left money to the town for a park to honor fellow draft dodgers. The business community, led by Montgomery, opposed the park as bad for tourism. Smith's mother, a long-time activist, leads the local group supporting the park. Smith's father, also an American draft dodger, is unsure of his stance. The awkward partnering of Winters's investigative experience with Smith's local knowledge provides additional conflict as both grow to appreciate the other's strengths.

Most enjoyable read
Trafalgar in British Columbia is the hometown of Constable Molly Smith, a.k.a. Moonlight. Molly's father was one of the men of draft age who fled to Trafalgar to avoid serving in the Vietnam War. Molly's mother Lucky is heading up a committee in favor of a peace garden to honor draft dodgers. Land has been bequeathed to the town for erecting such a garden but the project is running into some opposition.

One of the people strongly opposed to a peace garden is Reginald Montgomery. Reginald Montgomery has moved to Trafalgar to construct a luxury resort. Reginald is murdered and Molly is the police officer who discovers his body. Detective Sgt. John Winters is in charge of the investigation and Molly is assigned to assist. Their relationship does not start on the best footing but Molly learns a lot from Winters.

Molly has her hands full with trying to deal with the murder investigation, having her bike stolen and trying to help her best friend who is being stalked.

Before any of these matters can be worked out, a journalist arrives on the scene and is out to make headlines and cause trouble-and Molly finds herself right in the middle.

I totally enjoyed this book and the town of Trafalgar. Molly is a wonderful character from a charming family whom I would like to read more about.

A Good Debut
In the Shadow of the Glacier is a good, quick read. It is the first in what the author expects to be a mystery series featuring her main character, Constable Molly Smith of the Trafalgar, British Columbia Police Department.

Although the town of Trafalgar is fictitious, the general setting, an important element in the story, is not. The Kootenay Mountain region of southeastern British Columbia became a haven for draft dodgers, resisters, and deserters of the American military back in the era of the Vietnam War. Trafalgar, like many of the real towns in this part of BC, took these people in without much question, and many chose to remain and create new lives for themselves, even after the offer of a Presidential pardon. When one of the more successful of this particular group passes away, he bequeaths land and money to the town of Trafalgar to establish a garden commemorating the area's population of draft resisters. This controversial bequest is in conflict with the plans of a local developer who wishes to build a large-scale international-style resort. He worries that many Americans will find the sentiments of the garden, and perhaps therefore those of the townspeople, offensive, and that his project may not be a success. Opposing factions form; should the town remain true to its 1960's hippie roots or is it time to move on and bring in some new and bigger money? When the developer is found murdered in a back alley, questions and accusations fly. Rookie Constable Molly Smith is called into the investigation alongside Detective Sergeant John Winters, a veteran of the Vancouver Police Department.

The case picks up international attention via a Fox Network-style news reporter who arrives in Trafalgar, intent on escalating the situation. There are several sub-plots at work as well. One involves Molly's mother, a long-time activist from the 60's, who is deeply involved in the garden memorial. Another concerns Molly's friend Christa, who is stalked and subsequently assaulted, leaving Molly to feel that through her inattentiveness, she has let her friend down.

Delany handles all this material well. The writing is sharp and fast-paced, making the reader feel the stress and pressure under which the police must work to solve the crimes. The characters all have substance. The author provides background on each of the key players and we are able to form a clear picture of them and their motivations. Initially, I found that Delany dropped the names of the various characters a bit too fast and furiously and thought it difficult to follow the thread of the story. That fell into place soon enough and the plot progressed well.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book--a good debut for Ms. Delany's planned series.

War or Peace
During the Vietnam War there were men of draft age who fled to Canada to avoid serving in the army.In this novel, Trafalgar, British Columbia,is characterized as a center of such settlement, and apparently will be the site of a new series featuring Constable Moonlight ("Molly") Smith.

One such draft evader who prospered north of the border upon his death bequeathed his land to the town for a garden to be dedicated to honor draft dodgers, thus setting the stage for conflicts between the "peaceniks" and their opposites, especially businesses fearing antagonizing U.S. tourists upon whom they were dependent.One opposed to the garden was the developer of a proposed luxury resort who is found by Molly dead, presumably murdered, in an alley.

Molly is but a lowly beat cop, but she is assigned to assist Detective Sergeant John Winters in his investigation of the death.Further trouble is fomented by a TV personality and outside agitators.Winters and Smith continue seeking clues.While he resents her presence, he teaches and she learns.The DS has his own fears haunting him, which caused him to leave the Vancouver police department for the small town, and these are increased by the frustration of not solving the case quickly.

The author has a way of coming up with unusual themes, and this novel certainly lives up to this ability.In addition, the descriptions of the small town, its citizens and environment are handled exceptionally well.It is a good, solid mystery.

Another excellent read
As usual, Ms Delany has combined excellent characters and a well thought out story line.The book is complex with many issues being delved into - stalking, activism (both environmental and war related), theft, murder and problems a young woman faces as a cop.It all ties together in a satisfying and believable way.Really an excellent read, not too dark but certainly not cosy either. ... A superb book on glaciation and glaciers
I was distressed to see this book is apparently out of print, as I believe it is the best, most complete book on glaciers and glaciation/glacial processes for the uninitiated reader.The graphic photographs lose none of their impact by being in black and white, and greatly aid the reader's understanding in following the matters discussed in the lucid, easily read text.

Another virtue of the book is to emphasize, on first use, each term with which the reader may not be familiar.Learning of the topics and copics is greatly facilitated.Finally, the book contains easily understood diagrams of glaciers, and the landforms they create.

Having read the book, the reader has become very familiar with the basic knowledge of this most important phenomenon, and stands ready to tackle more detailed work if he or she so desires.I recommend this work very, very highly. ... Read more

Best book on glaciers for the interested layman
This is a delightful, awesome and clearly written book by two of the foremost glaciologists of the XXth century. The superb and unique photographs together with the correct yet easy to understand explanations make the book an excellent resource for everyone interested in glaciers.

So You Want To Know More About Glaciers?
Glacier Ice is a comprehensive survey which is both well-written and extensively illustrated. It is easy to read, but mastery of its contents would take considerable time and effort. So it is suited to a broad range of audience. Even a beginner with an interest in the subject would be able to get a good deal out of this book. Because the writing is straightforward and assumes nothing about the reader's expertise. And because Glacier Ice contains many photographs which are specifically presented to illustrate topics being discussed in the text.

For those who have spent time walking glacial surfaces in a state of awe and wonder, this book will answer all the questions that kept arising as you moved about in that supernal world. And it will clarify in detail the terms that you have heard tossed about but which needed further definition in your mind. Like moraine, for example. Which is a deceptively simple concept, butturns out to have tremendous explanatory power when it comes to the geophysics of landscape formation. In this regard, I had once been told that Long Island was a terminal moraine. Reading Glacier Ice rendered that nugget of information viable. I now have a picture in my mind's eye of just how the one-hundred mile-long land mass came into being.

One of the most visually dramatic surface features of glaciers is the multiple median moraines that form like layer cake when several ice flow tributaries converge into an ice field of gigantic proportion. Glacier Ice includes a number of photographs of this phenomena and an explanation for its occurrence. As with other aspects of glacier morphology taken up in this monograph, after a few moments time you can begin to picture vividly the way in which the forces at work between ice and rock would produce the effect you are studying.

One thing I particularly liked about Glacier Ice is that it was written with the mountain climber in mind. Thus descriptions of various glacier features are often accompanied by comments on the type of challenge the feature in question poses to the adventurer attempting to traverse it. This brought a topic of vastness down to human dimensions and I thought it a nice touch in what is essentially a textbook about the intersection ofthe force of gravity as it meets up with frozen water and rock. ... A background natural history for your visit to Glacier NP
This is *not* a travel guide or a hiking book.Instead, it is intended to provide a background in natural history for any visit to Glacier NP.

It does this admirably.The chapters on geology emphasize the "big picture" story of how these mountains were formed, and where you can see particular formations.Rockwell does not get lost in the details of rock type and strata names, as all too geologists do.

The book also has several chapters on habitats such as aspen parklands, the North Fork Valley, Macdonald Creek, subalpine and alpine.Again, Rockwell avoids a dry description of plants and animals and instead tells stories of how the habitat as a whole works.

Finally, Rockwell includes some tour-guide material, such as where to find particular kinds of geologic formations or animal habitats from the road.

If you'd like greater depth than you'll get from the visitors' centers, while still being accessible to laypeople, this book would be an excellent choice.

If interested in a detailed coverage of geology, ecology, botany, and environmental issues, this book is for you.

An interesting insight into the rocks and wildlife of Glacier
This is a comprehensive review of the geology and natural history of the Glacier area and will enhance a visit to the Park.It is not a guidebook in the traditional sense of listing accommodation and restaurants, itineraries etc.It has some colour photos, although most are black and white.

Excellent Survey of the Geology, Flora, and Fauna of Glacier
Obviously this is not a book intended to help you plan a trip to Glacier National Park, so the one-star review below was evidently given simply out of ignorant spite at having bought the wrong book!

If, however, you are looking for a book that discusses the geology, the flora, and the fauna of the stunning wilderness that is Glacier National Park, you can hardly do better than this one.And, if you have a brain that's turned on and are travelling in the park for any considerable length of time, as I did recently, believe me, you will have hundreds of questions about how that mountain got shaped that way or why those flowers only grow in this region or when the big-horned sheep are likely to be visible--and you will be looking for such a book.

This book discusses the different habitats and ecological niches that the park comprises, from the McDonald Creek Valley to the Alpine, includes checklists of native plants and animals, where in the park to find particular species, maps, and beautiful full color photos, and provides enough background on general principles of geology and ecology that you won't need any other resource.

On my visit to the park I saw many people with separate books for animals, for birds, for flowers, and so on.But this book has it all.I highly recommend it.
