This monograph analyzes the relationship between literature, thought and community in mid-20th century France. Taking as its point of departure the notion of community in mid-twentieth century French literature and thought, this ambitious study seeks to uncover the ways in which Breton, Bataille, Sartre and Barthes used literature and art to engage with the question of reconceptualizing society. In exploring the relevance these writings hold for contemporary debates about community, Lubecker argues for the continuing social importance of literary studies. Throughout the book, he suggests that literature and art are privileged fields for confronting some of the anti-social desires situated at the periphery of human rationality. The authors studied put to work the concepts of Thanatos, sado-masochism and (self-)sacrifice; they also write more poetically about man's attraction to Silence, the Night and the Neutral.Many sociological discourses on the question of community tend to marginalize the drives inherent within these concepts; Lubecker argues it is essential to take these drives into account when theorising the question of community, otherwise they may return in the atavistic form of myths. vive la decadence!
"the book of masks" is a fascinating, engrossing read from the first page on. gourmont offers poignant commentary on the worth of each individual writer, although more often than not he lets his personal view distort the actual facts of the various writers' lives. the only writer i didn't like in this collection was andre gide, an eye watering bore who shouldn't really be categorized as a 'decadent', i don't think. and the story by moreas about the mother coming onto her son was a bit nasty. but all of these stories have beautiful touches of mystical, otherworldly, occult and sometimes perverse elements to them. a must

Disturbing gothic fairy tales.

It studies the ways in which metropolitan Romantic novels—that is, novels by French authors such as Victor Hugo, George Sand, Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, François René de Chateaubriand, Claire de Duras, and Prosper Mérimée—comprehend and construct colonized peoples, fashion French identity in the context of colonialism, and record the encounter between Europeans and non-Europeans. While the primary texts that come under investigation in the book are novels, close attention is paid to Romantic fiction’s interdependence with naturalist treatises, travel writing, abolitionist texts, and ethnographies.

Colonialism, Race, and the French Romantic Imagination is one of the first books to carry out a sustained and comprehensive analysis of the French Romantic novel’s racial imagination that encompasses several sites of colonial contact: the Indian Ocean, North America, the Caribbean, West Africa, and France. This book is absolutely brilliant. Of course, anybody can say this without much effort: "Thanks for telling me (that the colonized is exploited and misrepresented) , I know it all along already." But nobody seems to take the time to show how this happened, and in what ways hegemonic power was construed, and what kind of colonial subject was formed. Norindr's vigorous work fills the relatively big void in the post-colonial field: the lack of serious, critical historical scholarship. Too many theories, too little archival work. I recommend Phantasmatic Indochina to anybody interested in Post-colonial studies and Southeast Asian studies. If you love Ann Stoler's Race and the Education of Desire, you'd like to read Phantasmatic Indochina as well.

This book is addressed to the phantasmic someone who disagrees with this: colonists exploit the colonized.This book is not for someone looking to better understand the French colonial aesthetic -- who they wanted to be,how they were influenced by their surroundings, and how they reflected thisin their art. The author reviews French art relating to Indochina with amonochromatic lens that filters everything out of view exept the evil ofcolonialism.No insights turn up that are not already possessed bysentient humans. ...
