This is the first comprehensive account in English of Finland's material folk culture, habits and folklore. It contains a wealth of photographs and maps and provides a good insight into Finnish folk culture against the general cultural trends in Europe. The subject is made all the more interesting by the fact that Finland has for centuries been a melting pot for cultural influences from both East and West. Finnish Folk Culure is a handbook both for students and for anyone interested in folk tradition and its history. It contains an index and a bibliography of works in English and German. ... Product Description
'Finland has a unique culture.' This is uncritically accepted by many ordinary Finns, travel writers and even foreign and Finnish academics. Why is Finnish culture accepted as being unique? What do people really mean when they term Finnish culture as 'unique'? Is Finnish culture really a mystery - an enigma, beyond comparison; something that can never 'make sense'?In The Finnuit, Edward Dutton reveals Finnish 'uniqueness' to be a religious dogma. It reflects the modern-day religions of Romantic nationalism and its cousin Cultural Relativism which turn disempowered cultures into mysterious gods to be worshipped and awed at. And Dutton argues that Finnish culture can be 'understood' - like anything - through comparison. Drawing upon detailed fieldwork, he finds that Finnish culture makes sense as a diluted Greenland - the world's most advanced Arctic culture.Edward Dutton is an English anthropologist and journalist. He studied Theology at Durham University and Anthropology of Religion at Aberdeen University. His first book, Meeting Jesus at University: Rites of Passage and Student Evangelicals, is published by Ashgate (2008). ... Read more

Product Description
This study analyses how the imaginary Finnish Maid (Suomi-neito) was used to construct the Finnish nation at the turn of the 20th century. It focuses on gender, femininity and masculinity, sexuality and body as well as on the images of virginity, bridehood and sexual violence. The study argues that Finnish male intellectuals saw the Finnish nation as their female beloved, a potential bride, but that they did not get her and the Finnish Maid remained an eternal virgin. In addition, the Finnish Maid was seen as being raped by the Russians. The materials analysed in this study consist of caricatures, poems and national monuments. ... Read more

Product Description
The purpose of this collection of articles is to map out the gender ideologies found in Finnish folklore and to raise questions about the processes behind their production, interpretation and transformation. Several authors in this study examine the ways in which, through cultural forms of expression and representation, gender has been used in Finland and in Karelia to symbolically organise such categories as the human body, human environment, 'inside' versus 'outside', and 'this world' versus 'other world'. ... Excerpt: A sauna (pronounced or ) is a small room or house designed as a place to experience dry or wet heat sessions, or an establishment with one or more of these and auxiliary facilities. These facilities derive from the Finnish sauna. The word "sauna" is also used figuratively to describe an unusually hot or humid environment. A sauna session can be a social affair in which the participants disrobe and sit or recline in temperatures of over 80 °C (176 °F). This induces relaxation and promotes sweating. Saunas can be divided into two basic styles: Conventional saunas that warm the air or infrared saunas that warm objects. Infrared saunas may use various materials in their heating area such as charcoal, active carbon fibers, and other materials. Product Description
In media and communications research, quality has usually been connected to non-commercial broadcasting, and commercial radio has been its opposite. However, commercial radio has always had its own quality culture, a shared understanding of successful performance and desirable outcome of the working process. But what is quality in commercial radio broadcasting and how this quality culture is composed? Is it determined directly by ratings and revenues - or are there any other cultural or social values which affect the development and change the conceptions of quality in commercial radio? This study examines how the conceptions of quality in Finnish and US commercial radio are historically constituted and what are the major differences and similarities in quality cultures in contemporary Finnish and US commercial radio. It also offers a new integrated theoretical approach to study quality and quality culture, drawing on multiple theories from media and communications studies, media economics, political economy, quality management and cultural studies. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A review of "Culture of Finland"
"Culture of Finland: Finnish literature, List of Finnish architects, Music of Finland, Sami music, Cinema of Finland, List of Finnish films, Telecommunications in Finland" is rather an interesting title. As is grouping the subject of "Telecommunications" under culture. This illustrates the perils of using a computer script to extract articles from Wikipedia and collate them into a "book."

So be warned, this book is actually a loosely linked collection of articles from Wikipedia with no human editing and from all acoounts from those who have been misled into buying books from this publisher, pretty poor quality. ... Read more
