A delight for fans of Middle-earth
The Lord of the Films by J. W. Braun is a fun, fact-filled guidebook to the wonderful Lord of the Rings films by Oscar-winning director Peter Jackson. (Braun's book also includes discussion of the Rankin/Bass animated versions of The Hobbit and The Return of the King as well as the Ralph Bakshi Lord of the Rings film.) The book is filled with behind-the-scenes information, details of the award-winning film trilogy that you may not have noticed, bloopers, and comparisons with the original source material for the films--the novel that is Tolkien's beloved masterpiece. The Lord of the Films is a book that devoted fans of the Peter Jackson trilogy will certainly enjoy. It's an entertaining read that you may want to examine carefully before re-watching the saga on DVD. It includes interviews, trivia, puzzles, rare cast photographs, and information on how to find the DVD "Easter Eggs" which are hidden on the extended edition DVD versions of the films.

Lord of the film trivia
For the record, I am a mildly fanatical "Lord of the Rings" fan, both movies and books.

So unsurprisingly I was overjoyed to find out about "The Lord of the Films: The Unofficial Guide to Tolkien's Middle-Earth on the Big Screen." It wasn't quite what I expected, since it's not so much a guide as a collection of Tolkienian trivia and behind-the-scenes information about the moviemaking process -- but it's still a thoroughly enjoyable, highly informative read.

J.W. Braun gives some lavish backstory to the making of the movie trilogy and the stuff that came before it, such as Bakshi's disastrous half-finished cartoon version. He also inserts some nice interviews with people involved in production: artist Paul Lasaine, makeup artist Vance Hartwell, "Zac the Orc," and design artist Daniel Falconer.

Each of the three movies is subdivided into important scenes and stretches of the narrative, and each of these chapters is filled with fascinating facts. Every chapter starts off on a light note with "What the Big Folk Were Saying" -- in other words, the weird and funny stuff that people in the theatres said ("Someone tell that thing his comb-over isn't working"), and there are fun little side-chapters that list various stuff about the movie (the worst merchandising toys! Easter eggs! The animated versions!).

The meatiest part is "What the Wizards Know," which is basically every piece of movie trivia Braun could dig up -- connections to the books, omitted scenes, changes from the original books, cut footage (Eowyn delivering a baby), significant cameos, clever tricks (Isildur's voice is actually Hugo Weaving's), production changes, casting that wasn't (Vin Diesel auditioned for Aragorn, and Russell Crowe declined the role), production tidbits (Shelob's webs were quite, erm, flammable), and so on.

There's also "What the Elvish Eyes and Ears Have Noticed," which are key changes (Merry and Pippin almost getting eaten by a tree in "Two Towers"), translation notes (Arwen calls Elrond "Daddy" at one point), and notable details in the film (Elrond doing paperwork). And finally there's "The Foolishness of a Took," which is basically nitpicking -- some are logistical errors, and some are basic production snafus (vanishing barrels!).

And just to round out the book, Braun tacks some extras onto the ending -- recurring themes, a list of important birthdays, an FAQ, and an enormous trivia game a more dedicated fan MIGHT be able to crack. I tried, and failed miserably.

J.W. Braun obviously adores both J.R.R. Tolkien's books and Peter Jackson's movie adaptations, because anyone who didn't couldn't have generated this detailed a book. He basically crams the entire book with details about both the production and the result of the moviemaking, and even though some have been revealed ad nauseam (Elijah Wood's audition tape) it's a treat to read some of the trivia that AREN'T as well known.

Braun also has a nice breezy style that lends itself well to the book. While most little info-nuggets are revealed in a straightforward, factual manner, he does offer opinions on some of the stuff ("Okay, so I just happen to be a Gríma/Éowyn shipper. Is that wrong? Don't answer that").

There are a lot of books on "Lord of the Rings" (both books and films), and "The Lord of the Films: The Unofficial Guide to Tolkien's Middle-Earth on the Big Screen" is a great addition -- as addictive as a Ring and as fun as a hobbit.

An affectionate guide to the movies
This book is a fun collection of facts about the Lord of the Rings films, with many tidbits you might not know. It gives a little history, trivia, bloopers and more, all told in an easy-to-read style. The author is clearly a fan with a sense of humor. If you enjoyed the movies, you'll love this book.

Fun trivia, but not enough
I bought this book after seeing the The Lord of the Rings trilogy for my fifth time and realizing, like Gollum's precious, that I needed more. The Lord of the Films: The Unofficial Guide to Tolkien's Middle-Earth on the Big Screen is a quick and fun read brimming with movie trivia. While I enjoyed reading it, I have to admit I was a bit disappointed.

First, the good. If you love the movies, you'll probably learn a few interesting tidbits from The Lord of the Films. These range from bloopers to special effects to legal disputes behind the film. For example, even after watching all of the "making of" extras on the DVDs, I never realized that Kate Winslet and Sean Connery had been asked to be in the film (as Eowyn and Gandalf, respectively). Mercifully, they both said no, allowing us to enjoy the performances of Miranda Otto and Ian McKellan. The book is written for a wide range of audiences, so even diehard LOTR fans will probably learn something. It also includes some interesting interviews (including one with Zac the Orc) and trivia games at the end.

Unfortunately, The Lord of the Films is organized more like a factoid/trivia collection than a historical narrative of the film production. Each fact only receives a sentence or two. This is unfortunate, because some of the issues merit a longer discussion. I really would have enjoyed learning more about where and why the films departed from the book. Some of the changes in the movies work well. For example, I really like how the movie incorporates the Arwen-Aragorn love story from the Appendix. Other changes proved silly. For example, whose dumb idea was it to have Denethor jump off Gondor in flames in Return of the King (in the book, he dies in a funeral pyre)? While these are mentioned in The Lord of the Films, much more could have been discussed. I certainly understand how much of a challenge it must have been to fit all of this information into 220 pages. Nonetheless, if there is a revised edition, I think there is certainly some material that could be cut (such as the comments of moviegoers) to make more room for the more important issues.

Ultimately, The Lord of the Films is a fun factoid book about the film, but it isn't a definitive account of the making of the movies. That gap remains to be filled. The book is also not a substitute for watching the bonus features on the DVDs, which are actually quite interesting. However, The Lord of the Films is worth a quick read and would probably make a nice small Christmas gift for any LOTR fan.

Highest recommendation
What I love about this book is how much fun it is to read - not dry at all - while at the same being very informative. Braun has somehow managed to capture every little detail you could ask for from The Lord of the Rings films and has ingeniously organized it to prevent readers from being overwhelmed. The photos, interviews, and illustrations (and games and puzzles and on and on) are all fun and well organized in their own right too. It's simply a great book all around. ... Read more

This company is a big disappointment
This book was suggested to me by a teacher, the book is good but the company who sent it charged $30.00 plus postage for it. I have bought from Amazon venders before and had no complent, but this time I found the book at another place for $10.00. In fact the $30.00 price tag when removed had a price of $9.95 under it, I expect better of Amazon and Amazon venders and I would never concider buying anything from this vender again. Granted I made a mistake but you can believe I'll never do it again

Great beginner book!
I'm currently reading this book for a video class and find it very easy reading, with illustrations that accurately describe the basic fundamentals needed for shooting.At first I thought it looked a little "too" basic, but when you're learning how to capture the right shot for video, it's much nicer to have a book describe it in lay terms rather than industry jargon that confuses you.That being said, it defines some of the jargon for you that is needed for future education courses in Video.

Students: Don't pay more than $10 for this!
This book only costs $9.95 from the author plus $3 shipping. I wish I knew this before I paid $23 for it!Just google the author "Tom Schroeppel" and get it from his website if you can't find it reasonably priced here. I also realized after the fact that I could have bought this book from my campus bookstore for the same price. Usually Amazon is cheaper but my book came from another seller on here.

The book is exactly what it says it is, a bare bones camera course. It is a small booklet (85 pages) of succinct information with cartoon illustrations throughout. It reminds me of a lab booklet for a science class. It is perfect for the person who is just starting out and trying to learn the technical nuances.

Good book to start with
This book is good to start with, it really explains you some fundamental things about films (though you still need to have some experience and "eye" to understand it)... It's good that he makes it interesting and fun to read and learn - you really have more idea about making films in all stages of production yet still like every art book there are some flaws but again it's a book for beginners - I think that people should read the book, watch the EVERY film he talks about and then keep on buying more advanced books as well as seeing more films even with commentary.
To sum up, this book is great for those who want to start learning film-making - truly great but still you won't be able to make even short films just by reading this book but it's sure is a first step.

Textbook Shmexbook
Despite being a text book Film Directing Fundementals is not only intriguing, but it displays the information in an easy to understand way that can help anyone understand filming.

An Engaging Intro to "Film and Literature"
In the preface to his book FILM AND LITERATURE, Timothy Corrigan notes the "enormous scope" of the topic. Wisely, he subtitles the book "An Introduction and Reader."

Part I, "Film and Literature in the Crosscurrents of History," comprises eight brief and lively chapters, beginning with the silent era of theatrical depictions to the adaptations of novels. Among the problematic adaptations dicussed are The Grapes of Wrath, The Shining, and Lolita.

Part II, "Critical Borders and Boundaries: Analytical Categories for Film and Literature" introduces basic concepts in Film and Literary Studies.

Part III, "Major Documents and Debates," more than two-thirds of the book, is an anthology of essays on cinema excerpted from the writings of influential scholars such as Walter Benjamin, Sergei Eisenstein, Andre Bazin, George Bluestone, and Kristin Thompson.

The book makes very engaging reading.

Perfection
This book is so clear and concise every step of the way from conception to distribution.It doesn't try to be the end all in getting yourself into independent filmmaking by offering you real advise on certain situations where you need to work with a professional ie attorney or accountant , etc.It makes it feel like he's not trying to sell you but truly give you advise from someone who has experience.This book will be by my side for a long time, it's a great reference tool and helps bring clarity when your getting yourself into something that can seem overwhelming like making your first independent film.One of the main parts I loved about this book was going over the "investment memorandum", if your going to raise the money yourself it really shows you how to professionally approach investors.Also I ordered the original 1982 publishing by accident, this gave me great insight on how certain information was obtained then and what independent films we're breaking boundaries then. I would love to compare this one with the updated 1998 publishing, but I don't regret getting the original, like I said it has given me great insight.All around Greg Goodell knows how to convey information in a way that makes it easy to understand and still gives you the little details that are needed.He also like I said offers up seeking professional assistance when no book would be able to give you the answer. If your serious about raising the money for your film and starting from scratch I couldn't recommend a better book.

The Theory of Film Production
In theory, this should be a fascinating reading experience.

The three essentials of film production-concept, the actual production and distribution, have done more to advance the cause of Indie filmmakers being driven to distraction, not to mention the poorhouse!

The area of budgeting is murky with contradictions in Goodell's tome.

On the one hand, he tells us that the "Above the Line" (producer, director, story rights, screenwriter and principal cast) and "Below the Line" (all other actual production expenses) ratio is often 1:3 but is quite often reversed.

Thanks for the clarity! The book is little more than an extended Wikipedia entry. It contains all the facts but lacks any real sense of the richness and complexity of film production.

It relies too much on pre-Internet publications and information previously provided elsewhere and has a disturbing habit of leaving potential filmmakers with a bald fact without offering a glimpse into the strange world behind the facts.

This book is comprehensive and quite good for its' day - 1998. But it's 2009 and many aspects of producing have changed and need to be addressed.

A must-read for any indie producer
First, I have to say that I've ordered this book twice, expecting a 2003 print only to find it was from the 80s. The 1998 print is the most recent I've found, and is far superior.
Second, this is the best book I've read on film production, be it development, pre-production, production, post, or distribution. This book covers every aspect you can imagine, and everything you can't and probably wouldn't imagine. The clear, concise, and detailed means of explaining the process of making a movie makes this a great read-through and an excellent reference.
If you aspire to produce indie flicks, you MUST read this. Seriously. It won't let you down. Actually, if you aspire to work in film in any way, this is probably the best book I can recommend because it will give you a full no-nonsense understanding of how movies are made, and any work you do on a film will benefit from that knowledge.

Great Book Confusing Purchase
An invaluable book on the process of film production, which I learned also happens to be required reading for the aspiring producers program at the LA Film School.

There's 3 descriptions for this book: 1982 first edition (323 pgs); 1998 Revised and updated edition (483 pgs); and a 2003 third described version (352 pgs), which is actually the 1982 first edition 323 pgs with a new ISBN # and an added page count that includes the copyright, dedication, table of contents, blank and preface pages to get a 352 pg count. I learned that the 2003 (352 pgs) release version is actually a POD "Print on Demand" re-release of the 1982 first edition for new orders for whatever reason. Sound Makes or Breaks your film or TV show
If you're a student of film or if you're a home movie maker, you really owe it to yourself to pick up this book and read it.Very quickly you come to realize that making a movie or tv show or good home movie is about:

- Light
- Sound
- Makeup
- Editing
- Camera
- Script

Mess any one of these things up and you wind up with a suboptimal product.

This book is very comprehensive on the sound aspect.It covers a whole lot more than what a home movie maker like me needs but it's certainly comprehensive enough for a student of film who is getting into the field.

If you make movies, get this book and study it.Never underestimate soound.

Great college textbook for students seeking a career in sound for film and television!

This was not really my kind of book. It had the feel of a college textbook, and the material included was as dense and boring as any college textbook I have ever read. The pages were big, the print was small, and the page formatting was double column. There were pictures included the same way as in a typical college textbook. The author teaches a class or classes in California at the college level. And it is my understanding he uses this book as the course textbook.

I'm not in college any longer, and I haven't been there for some time. My reading preferences tend to weigh in positively with informative books that do not get too technical, but provide a lot of information and make good points. This book does not make many points at all. It is very technical. And quite frankly it does not provide much information that I could really use. Accordingly, I could not give it a 5-star rating.

Having said all that, I found the book to be a good college textbook. If the student is working toward an entry-level position in the motion picture industry as a sound techie, then this book is probably a must-read. It covers a lot of material. It is quite dense in the material it provides. And the student if she digests and assimilates the information in this book will probably be able to fit into a production company or consulting firm that help to make sound in film and television great.

Early in the book the author told me to read the chapters in the following order: 4, 8, 5-7, and 9-13. I took his advice and never went back to chapters 1-3. But I had already read the preface and the introduction. If you want to learn about much of the ins and outs of sound, microphones, and mixing sound recordings, or editing sound recordings so you can be the ultimate professional at what you do, then I highly recommend this book to you. But if you just want to know about sound regarding your camcorder projects and how to make it good or better, then this book might be a bit much for you. I did not see a way to translate what I read here into making better sound for my home videos. 4 stars!

A concise professional level overview of sound recording and design for motion pictures
"Sound for Film and Television" presents a concise and well rounded overview of the many issues, technologies and creative concerns involved in the recording, mixing, design and presentation of sound in motion pictures. The wide range, multi channel sound fields typical of modern films require an in depth understanding of sound design requirements, aesthetic concerns and the "reality" that many sounds imply and require. The sound of a truck, in the distance, for example, must not only be "distant" but suggest the ambience of "what distance", "where" and what sort of sound field that distance occurs in. Music, dialog and effects must all be considered as distinct elements. The modern sound mixer/designer is truly a "conductor" of a refined and precisely selected, crafted and presented sonic orchestra.

"Sound for Film and Television" gives good, professional level summaries of these concerns, and cites and includes many examples from well known films that are considered hallmarks of sound design and development. RECOMMENDED.

May Prove a Valuable Reference to Some ... Others, A Trip in a Time-Machine
Mostly written in the first-person plural, this technical text has an oddly informal approach. Likewise, the strange use of slang had me a little confused. For example, "bit-slinging"? Having never heard this expression, I took a break from the obligatory charts/grids and read this entry. Apparently, the author dubbed editing-room assistants "bit slingers" because they remind him of "gunslingers" from "cowboy movies." Hmm. Odd choice.

Moreover, while some of the images are helpful (like how lighting can expose the cabling on a body microphone), many have a 1970s appearance. Maybe a more modern approach to capturing these images would have helped. And, sure, I know the purpose of this text is to teach/inform ... but a "good-looking" book never hurts. (Especially when I have students who'd prefer not to read at all).

Still, for all its drabness, awkwardness, and "coined" terms, the text contains information that could help a person who is new to this field. So, while I'm not a fan, I can see how some may benefit it.

A Bible for Sound
I have all three of Holman's books: this one, Sound for DV, and Surround Sound. What I like about the books is their friendly style, their explanations of how to do things, and their being grounded in actual practice. Hence, this book has lots of examples from film and television.

For me, and perhaps for others, sound is not easy. There are lots of technical features you need to know, lots of ways of making errors, and a wide variety of equipment at a wide range of prices. (It's not like photography, where a point-and-shoot digital camera will do a good job. There's really no such "point-and-shoot" recorder/microphone that does a close to first rate job.) Holman holds your hands, and leads you to do a better job, explains along the way, and tells wonderful stories as well.

The book is not "easy," because the materials are not easy. But, if you want to master sound for film and television, you need this book, at least. ... Read more

I don't know.
Most people who buy this are going to be progressives like Michael Moore who want to make films from the left. I didn't read it all. I stopped when the author told me that he didn't like Michael Moore's method. I suppose it will teach you how to make a film, but I want to hear it from the left. We are exposed to more right wing propaganda right now than Germany in the 1930's, but the author wants the left to be careful not to make propaganda.

The book I have been looking for
This book is a wonderful guide to documentary process and method. Using examples of good and bad while explaining why. Also stressing the use of truth not political agenda.

A truly well done primer on the ethics and techniques of the documentary


Documentary film is primarily a visual medium, is it not? So how does one account for a densely packed book - nothing but words with not a single illustration to break the tedium - that thoroughly and exhaustively documents (pun intended) every aspect of the ethos and production of documentaries?

The ethos part is important. Barry Hampe is concerned with the rise of liars who use the documentary form to spread their misstatements and untruths. He uses Michael Moore and Al Gore as examples and, in my opinion, is too gentle with them. But his message is clear: "the verifiable truth of a video or film depends on the honesty of the documentarian in presenting an accurate analog of he situation as he or she understands it". That declaration is worth devoting considerable thought to.

As the entry cost of producing a documentary has plummeted in recent years and cable channels and the internet have increased the audience for documentaries, documentarians of all stripes have risen from everywhere. Most, in my experience, have a partisan message they want to share. Heck, if I ever give in to my desires, I will make a documentary and it will most certainly be partisan.

But as Hampe makes clear in roughly the first half of his book, partisanship is fine - as long as the message is delivered honestly.

You need only turn on your television or browse numerous websites to recognize that most of what passes for documentaries today is not honest.

Hampe tries his best to convert the heathens. I doubt he will succeed, but he does try and what he has written about ethics in documentaries and the philosophy of the documentary is very interesting, as is the history and background he provides.

Approximately the second half of the book is about making your documentary.

Hampe wisely doesn't get involved with discussions of equipment. Nor does he dwell much on using equipment.

Rather he describes the process through and by which a documentary is made from drafting a proposal, should one be required, to choosing actors, how to direct, recording sound, post-production, working on location - all the aspects of putting together what used to be called a movie and is now far more likely to be a video.

Hampe writes for video. Throughout the book I was haunted by the feeling that I should be watching Hampe speak, with the accompanying video showing the details of what he was speaking about. Hampe's writing style is natural and free-flowing.

Overall this is an extraordinary book about making videos and films without a single illustration. Just a smooth flowing river of words. Barry Hampe has done extremely well here. He essentially tells you to go forth and spread your word, then tells you how to do it. And all he asks is that you be honest.

This is a must read for anyone even thinking about a career in documentary film making! Every paragraph is meaty with thought provoking questions and answers on everything from modern technology advances to documentary ethics. A 5 star recommendation.

To all aspiring movie makers,
For me, this book was an awesome find. I was so pleased by it, in fact, that I wanted to create the most amazing review ever, to help promote its comprehensive and informative nature.
In brief, I have enjoyed a long career in music, most of which turns up on TV in a wide variety of visual productions, and have always been a big fan of PBS for its presentation of excellent documentaries.(Sorry, Barry, but Ken Burns always seems to roll off my tongue whenever I feel the need to name a name.) Having said that, I knew absolutely nothing about the creative process for creating great documentaries.
Recently I took interest with the ever evolving landscape in the town where I live as they continue to clear the land for more stores full of things that nobody buys and those awful restaurants where the kitchen crews pick their noses and spit under the skin of your chicken.
However, by far, the most worrying issue we face is the displacement of wildlife in our city and the apparent complacency displayed by many over what they throw in the lake. For this reason I started filming any thing that moved and was surprised at just how many creatures lived in and around the neighborhood.
"You should make a documentary", my wife said. She then found this gem of a book for only [...]right here on this great website.
I found that I was already doing some things well and other information allowed me to be more effective at getting 'visual evidence' for the production. In addition, I understand the meaning of letting the visual sequence tell the story and not relying on interviews or voice overs to make the point.
Look, How I am supposed to fit all the good points about this book into one review I don't know. It is absolutely excellent in its entirity and I have even been able to communicate directly with the author on a few points. So whether you did or you didn't go to film school, this book is a must. It is now my 'go-to' book as I find myself wanting to make more visual productions.
Much gratitude to you , Barry, for sharing you knowledge and insight. Even more so for sharing yourvalued opinion on the odd occasion in the book. For what its worth, I'm still not sure where the political basher on a literal soap-box comes into it but we are entitled to our opinion!!!!

A Great Film Encyclopedia
As a screenwriter and Film Professor, I use THE POWER OF FILM in my intro class and have found it be a valuable resource for all of my students.Bravo to Suber for encapsulating just about every term to make the user "film literate."A nice compliment to any film library.

A film structure master class
To put this review in perspective, I took Professor Howard Suber's (he insisted on us calling him Howard) film structure course in the early 90's when I was at UCLA.Professor Suber was considered a gifted speaker.Every week we would analyze the structural underpinnings of a particular film, and Professor Suber would draw upon a broad range of ideas and princples in order to illuminate the structural meaning of film elements.These ideas included those from Kulishof, Koestler, Gestalt psychology, Newtonian physics, Greek and Elizabethan drama, etc.The lessons of the course went far beyond that of film, and I have used many of his ideas in my current professional practice of law.We begged Professor Suber to write a book, and he kept saying someday.Well that someday has come and to that you should be grateful.If you are interested in discovering the transcendant structural elements of story telling which cause films to resonate with a broad audience, then this is the book for you.Among the things you will learn are the basis of humor, power relationships between characters, effective characterization, the path of the hero (including the 4 D's: desire, deception, discovery, destiny), and the one hour crisis point.Similar to Robert McKee, Professor Suber does not say that you must follow these principles, only that that they exist in a startling large number of popular films.What I remember most from Professor Suber is his often quoted comment that the principle "motion" of motion pictures was emotion.This book will really help you see that.

One of the most detailed and thorough books on modern film
I've had the priviledge of taking Professor Suber's class at UCLA but having this book allows me to revisit class discussions and to really go in depth on the themes and structure of film. This is a must book to have for any student or lover of film. After reading Power of Film, you will have a fuller experience when you go to the theater and you will have a greater appreciation and understanding of your favorite films.

really funny and informative
I really liked this book. It gave a great incite into what it takes to get into a film festival though a marketing perspective. When making a movie this is great for providing information on stuff to keep in mind if you want to make money on your movie. He talks about how to get into parties and what your press kit should have. I find this information really valuable when making movies and writing scripts.

GREAT Book on Recording and Producing Audio!
I'm pretty picky when it comes to buying reference books about anything.The book has to be comprehensive, and it also has to be packed with practical examples, good advice, and it needs to demonstrate a deep technical knowledge of the subject.It also has to be easy to read, understand, and apply.I bought Jay's book because of the great reviews on Amazon.com, and this book definitely lives up to the hype.The book starts by explaining what sound is and how it works.Then the book goes into how sound is captured and recorded.The next sections go into preparing for audio production and then how to actually do it on the set.The final chapters cover the many ways to get that audio into post production and how to handle it there.There is an even more comprehensive book on audio post production from Jay called "Audio Postproduction" and I'd recommend getting that one too, but if you can only afford one book on audio, THIS one is the one to have. (Jay even says so at the beginning, and after reading it I agree). Now, to be honest this doesn't go into the depths of HOW to use programs like SoundBooth or SoundtrackPro, but it does give you enough information to know WHAT to do when you get into those programs and how to set yourself up for success using them. (The main reason for this is that there are so many different platforms, hardware, and software setups that are used in audio post production that it would be ridiculous to try and cover it all at the end of one book.)There is even a section on producing your own custom sound effects using the human voice and editing, and how to make sounds like machinery, monsters, and explosions.What more do you want?

The biggest mistake that will kill your low budget film will be the quality of the audio.Get this book and you have a ton of weapons to fight that!

Absolutely amazing book
This book has really shown me how little I know about audio, and how much I still have to study.

I've translated to Spanish some 60 pages of wonderful tips that I keep handy for times I encounter the situations mentioned here (all the time).

I just bought another of Rose's books "Audio Postproduction for Film and Video, Second Edition: After-the-Shoot solutions, Professional Techniques,and Cookbook Recipes to Make Your Project Sound Better (DV Expert Series)" to get a better knowledge of how to enhance my capabilities and to see how things are correctly done.

If You're Going To Read Only One Book On Sound...
...this would have to be it. I've read a good number of books on the subject and Jay Rose's publication is by far my favorite. While a lot of sound books come across very dry, technical, and quite frankly can tend to be boring, I actually found Producing Great Sound for Film & Video to be entertaining. You can get a real sense of the author's personality while reading, in addition to his obvious wealth of experience in the area of production sound. A lot of aspiring filmmakers I know spend a lot of time studying and practicing shooting techniques, but shy away from really learning enough about sound recording. Dark City-- Noir revealed
A terrific and well documented exposition about an American original-- Film Noir.

The writing is both informative and typical of the genre, like " she was a high-toned gal."

Very important book
It captured the lost moments of the forgotten glorious era of black and white movies. The photos are out of this world, and the articles added an extra dimension to the magical falir of that lost era. Read it!

As Good as the Movies it Describes
If you like film noir you will love this book. Not only does it colorfully describe (in noir-speak) seemingly all the great noir films, it provides juicy biographical sketches of many of noir's film stars. Add to this scores of great pictures and you have a book that aptly, skillfully, and enjoyably capture all the things you love about noir films. Ten stars!

You'll Read It, and Like It!
Every once in a while, a book comes along that is nearly perfect--a book so good that even the most critical reader should find nothing in it to gripe about, and that really fits into the "must-have" category.

Eddie Muller's "Dark City: The Lost World of Film Noir" is such a book.

With that said, you need to know what it is NOT: it is NOT a heavily footnoted academic treatise on the uniquely mid-20th-century American cinematic crime film genre for which the French coined the term "film noir." There are other books out there if you're interested in scholarly film criticism. "Dark City" IS a celebration, in words and pictures, of the dark, brooding, stylish, fatalistic crime dramas, mainly from the 1940s, that critics today justly regard as some of the finest films the American movie industry has ever produced.

An acknowledged expert on the subject of film noir, and whose commentary tracks appear on many noir DVD releases, Eddie Muller really knows what he's talking about, and his enthusiasm for his subject is clear and infectious. Written in an irreverent, wisecracking style seemingly straight from the mouths of memorable noir characters such as Humphrey Bogart's hard-boiled detective Sam Spade in "The Maltese Falcon" ("When you're slapped, you'll take it and like it!"), "Dark City" is a superb treatment of film noir that is both an excellent introduction for the novice and an entertaining review for the aficionado. Illustrated throughout with outstanding, well-chosen and -captioned black-and-white images, and with very high production values, "Dark City" is an excellent addition to the library of even the most casual film noir fan. If you enjoy watching the movies, you can't help but enjoy this book. Now please excuse me, I have to go pop "This Gun for Hire" into the DVD player...

I've listened to Eddie Muller's commentaries on various DVDs, and they have been excellent overall. He also seems like an extremely nice guy. Having said that, I had mixed feelings about this book. As another reviewer said, it is indeed written in a rather breezy way. It's also quite self-referential, which gets tedious sometimes. There are some genuine nuggets sprinkled throughout that pique your interest. Still, the treatment feels superficial, and the content blends together after a while. IMHO, I think it's more suited to suited to someone who's not that familiar with film noir. ... Read more

Comprehensively... OUTDATED
Be warned about this book. Not only is it outdated, a huge portion of the book does not apply to most independent producers. For example, it dabbles in legal talk about financing and distribution contracts and dealings with studios and banks -- two that are almost never going to happen for most people who are buying this book. It just gives out information without considering it's functionality in the independent market. Don't buy this book. Get a more efficient and realistic book about the independent production process. It just explains and explains without giving any examples or sample contracts. What a waste of money.

Good First Book for Entertainment Law
Great source for beginners and no law students in the basic aspects and concepts of law and regulations in the entertainment industry.

Not ground breaking
Although this book is not ground breaking, it gives a filmmaker/producer a good understanding of how to go about in the business of film.

A must for first time producers
Being a first-time independent producer I had little knowledge of all the legal elements involved in movie deal making.I must say that even though at first this book was a little difficult to understand, given the nature of some legal terms used, it has been essential to get a clear picture of everything that must be covered to ensure proper production, financing and distribution of any film project.

The book doesn't go into detailed forms or explanations of complex contracts.It does, however, highlight the most important points of views on both sides of the negotiating table so you're better prepared when taking part either one.Furthermore, there are basic rules of thumb that will allow you to understand key business aspects and demand more from your legal advisors when making contracts for the entire production process (from development through distribution).

I went on to buy "The Independent Film Producer's Survival Guide" to analyze specific forms and contracts and other legal elements in further detail, but this book is definitely the starting point!!

A realisticly insightful literaturefor producing movies
There are so many film programs in the country but hardly any that provide the insight into the finance and legalities of the industry. Being a fresh graduate, I my self faced this problem. This book however, is a problem solver. Baumgarten's, Farber's and Fleischer's approach towards the business aspects of filmmaking is an insightful one and it provides vital information, especially for those who are just about to get their feet wet. Perfect Introductory Book to Hollywood
I purchased a number of "get into film/hollywood" books and this one was by far the most helpful.While it doesn't have much of the typical career advice (how to write your resume, cover letters etc.), which are better covered in more general job hunting books, it is the perfect book to read to get a sense for the jobs that do exist in Hollywood.If you're interested in the industry, but find it something of a "black box" or are unsure exactly what type of position to try and look for, this book is the ideal starting point.Levy walks through the entire industry, from agencies to studios, to actors, directors, costume designers etc.Given the wide canvas, none of the positions are covered in too much detail, but I think the book ideally serves as an excellent starting point from which to know where to pursue more information.

Finally, the tone of the book is excellent - one of excitement and encouragement.While it's a small point, dry and depressing hollywood career books abound - it's refreshing to find one that's has an enthusiasm and optimism to match your own.

Wanted: Hollywood film jobs
The book is great.If you want to get in the to industry (that's what people call the film industry in Southern California), buy the book.It gives a complete break down of all the people that are required to make any movie.So next time when you watch the ending credits, you'll know what a key grip, best boy, art director, first assistance director does and be able to tell your friends as they walk out of the theater asking, "What's a best boy?"

Full of Great Information!
This book is full of great information about film and it's history but not in a dated way. There are a ton of case studies of various types of films new and old that help shed some light on the film and get you thinking about it more deeply and not just as entertainment or "I liked or didn't like it". I think the case studeis are the parts I like best and the glossary and index and very easy to read. There are a lot of good pictures of celebrities and scenes from films in the book and many are from the authors own personal collection. The authors explain the new terms clearly and the information is very revelent to anyone who has anything to do with the media. Be it you love watching movies, are a film major, or a culture buff. Everyone and everything is racist!
Essentially, this book just set out to prove that everyone and everything is racist. There was little support for any of the arguments, and a lot of them were just circular arguments, reworded for emphasis. I was unable to sell it back to a bookstore after I completed the course, which only fuels my bitterness towards this book.

Disappointing considering the subject matter.
I would like this book more if the authors had been more thorough.The theories about socio-political trends reflected in cinema are very valid but provided without citation.Although "further reading" suggestions are provided at the end of each chapter, no specific citations are made for any of the statements.As a book aimed towards students, the authors are providing a poor example.

I realize that the book is geared towards introductory level students, but it could have been a much different and frankly more interesting book if it had just gone further and been a little less sloppy.For example, one statement that immediately bothered me was one that was used as the basis throughout the book."For the working purposes of this introduction, capitalism as an ideology can be defined as the belief that success and worth are measured by one's material wealth."(Introduction, page 9)Why?Who says?Isn't that actually materialism, not capitalism? Definition of materialism by The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language: "2. The theory or attitude that physical well-being and worldly possessions constitute the greatest good and highest value in life."Sure, the author is talking about ideology and the tendency of capitalism to promote commodity fetishism.Why not just directly quote Das Kapital by Karl Marx?His model of dominant ideologies (see Wikipedia entry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominant_ideology for a summary) are exactly what the authors use to explore their subject matter and yet they don't SAY that.In "further reading", one book suggested is "Marxism and Literature", so fine, the reader could theoretically gain the same knowledge there, but it's bad academic form to make sweeping statements without any kind of evidence.It also denies the student a richer learning experience and leads to the practice of "parroting" commonly held views without knowing the truth behind them.

And as far as cultural reform goes, it's doing anti-discrimination and equal rights causes a disservice because if they don't provide evidence and sound logic in a scholarly manner, people of opposing viewpoints can discredit their arguments as typical liberal speculation.Thus their very valid criticisms of Hollywood films hold less weight.

This book could have been a major work, had the authors developed it further and used a more academic approach.I guess it's fine as an introductory text, but even so it still should have used a bibliography.

Everyone knows the Film Encyclopedia is the Bible about films, directors, actors etc.I have a much-thumbed copy that I believe is the 2007 Edition.I resent the fact that, unlike listings in years past, this one does not clearly specify the publication date.I want to buy the update when it is available, but I don't think this is it??

Nuts and Bolts
When it comes down to it, "Film Scheduling" does not steer you wrong, giving the reader the essential foundation blocks to properly break down and schedule a particular film.


My problem with the book however is that it is awfully dated. Being published in the 80s and revised in the 90s, it treats electronic tools (ie a computer) like it is some sort of "coming soon" feature.

All and all a decent book, that if anything is needing a new edition.

Clear and elaborate explanation on breakdown and scheduling. A bit short on getting the number of scenes on a day tot day basis right, but I guess practice does it.

The definitive work...
This book is the definitive work in film scheduling. It clearly explains the process of breaking down a screenplay in order to produce a shooting schedule, daily call sheets, and much of the rest of the paperwork that goes hand-in-hand with a smooth feature film.

Planning is everything on cost-effective filmmaking. This book is an educational tool that breaks everything down into small logical steps. It explains how to carry out those steps, and the logic and reasoning behind doing it this way. In the end, you arrive at a point where you have ample paperwork that explains in which order you shall shoot your film, on which days, in which locations, and with everyone knowing who and what needs to be where, when!

It needs to be said that at time, the breakdown process can be laborious and highly repetitive. This method goes a long way to minimizing the repetition, and making you a more effective filmmaker.

When you reach the end of this book and have scheduled your film, the companion book "Film Budgeting" will show you with equal clarity how to produce a meaningful budget from the results of this book.

I highly recommend both books, particularly if you are working on larger productions where you have enough money to really mess up, but not enough money to afford to mess up.

Great primer!!
Before getting this title I had downloaded a couple of scheduling software to start planning a short film but soon discovered that I had no clue how to get started and transform the written words in the script to a detailed plan of action for the cast and crew to follow.

Although this book is a little old - the second edition was published in 1991- the principals for film scheduling it contains are invaluable for anyone involved in planning a film or video production.It guides you through the logical process of transforming any script into the foundation for a precise film schedule.Brief and concise explanations about color-coding your script, transferring these tags to breakdown sheets and then working with the strip board to fine tune your schedule.It uses Francis Ford Coppola's Conversation as a sample script, and it takes up a large chunk of the book.This helps illustrate a very complex film and what was the mindset for breaking it down into shooting days in the most adverse conditions, but you can always use your own. It also includes a chapter on computer scheduling but most of the software presented are outdated; the most important thing you can learn from this chapter is that you need to understand the fundamentals, key parameters and how the process is done manually before sitting in front of a computer and this book does just that.

I must also point out that you can breeze through the pages as I was able to finish this book in just two days (over the weekend) leaving me enough time to practice the basics and go to the computer to prepare a reasonable film schedule.

READ THIS BOOK FIRST!!
Film Scheduling is the basic primer of how to schedule a film. There are very expensive computer programs that will help you in scheduling -- but you have to first understand the process. This book is written by an experienced, working, Hollywood film producer. Best $20 you'll spend. Cheaper than film school! It was okay
I guess unless you are in the classroom enviornment then it isn't really helpful.I thought I understood it and tried to tweak my camera settings and it was a big mess... so I think I will stick to Auto until I know for SURE what I am doing.

It did teach me a couple things that I was interested in doing though.

A must have for Starters
This book was amazing. Just after reading the first couple parts of it I had understood more than from the classes that I have been taking in college. Will help you understand more about photography in a shorter amount of time.

Learning Photography
With this book, and because of this book I can easily say I take better pictures. I own a Canon G10. I got sick of owning a $500 camera that I never took of Auto Mode. After buying this book, I planned on doing a cross country drive. Stopping at the Grand Canyon, Colorado River, doing some hiking in Utah. After reading this book, I learned how to operate my camera in Manual, how shutter speed, ISO, Aperture go hand in hand with each other. Learning this, I've taken some amazing shots that I will gladly hold on to for the rest of my life. It might have been luck of the draw, but while I was changing the dials to make sure I was getting the correct exposure, I can't help but think it's this book that helped me understand it all.

Good communication
The item took a while to get here (3 wks) the USPS lost the first shipment but the seller contacted me early and often to make sure the one he re-sent got to me. It was a bit bent up when it got here but I doubt it was the seller's fault. Great seller, maybe not the best shipping method.

Photography 101
This was a pretty good read.It isn't as basic as the Scott Kelby books, but it is more indepth.He uses a lot of photographs to help explain whatever subject he talking about as well as giving the details of the shots.It's a good book if you are fairly new to photography.If you've been shooting for a while and figured a lot of it out by tial and error, this may not be the best book for you. ... Sterling book, not unimportant
Look at the 4 or 5 star reviews, which seem about right. Not a technical book about editing--there are tons of books on that--but a few gems do stand out, like Coppola's occasional use of same costume for actors, which can help the editing process. Quite insightful, by a master editor and writer, on some of the best US films.

Best Book About Creating Art
This is a book that gets you deep into the filmmaking process -- and actually, the making of any art. Murch reveals a lot about what it's like to edit film. The more I learn about film editors, the more respect I have for them. Plus, Ondaatje makes very fine contributions to this book. He has the role of interviewer and he asks really good questions ... and he talks about writing which was also very interesting. This is a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED book. Highly. It's THE best book I've ever read about making art. [But I haven't read Maya Lin's Boundaries yet.]

Excellent conversation between award winning professionals in two creative fields: the novel & film
If you want to sit in and hear to brilliant creative artists reveal how they go about making "choices" which is the heart of each of their works--novel and film--then this book is for you.I have done graduate school in both of these creative arts and still found these conversations more pointedly helpful for seeing how these two arts work than most other parts of my studies.Jump in, very friendly, and informative conversations.

Casual Conversations + Occasional Heavy Insights = A Four Star Book
The full title of "The Conversations" is a bit misleading, since anyone reading it expecting a linear, orderly text on the art of film editing will not find it here. For that we have Murch's own In the Blink of an Eye Revised 2nd Edition. I read that book before this one, and I have a strong sense that that reading "Blink" first will greatly enhance "The Conversations."
What makes both books good is Murch himself, whose writing and speaking styles would be best described as casually theoretical. Murch talks about literary and cinematic subjects which are usually reserved for the realm of academic writing, but he speaks about these subjects in a way that is very accessible even as it gets perplexing. He doesn't indulge in jargon; he expresses rambling, abstract thoughts in very easy-to-read English. Ondaatje also does an excellent job of encouraging Murch to explore his thoughts further.
The book's greatest strength is in its anecdotes from film productions. The book is chock full of them, but his story about Fred Zinneman's (director of Julia, which Murch edited, in addition to many classic 20th century movies zealous objection to correcting "mistakes" and the revelations about his Frankenstein-style cutting and pasting of sound and images in The English Patient (Miramax Collector's Edition)are perhaps the most intriguing and insightful.
Even in Murch and Ondaatje's less focused conversations, many insights about the creative process are to be found, and the book as a whole will satisfy any true fan of movies who enjoys learning about the movie-making process and the temperaments of the people involved.

The Language of Editing
It is always a pleasure to read anything by Michael Ondaatje and to take in any film edited by Walter Murch. The pleasure is compouinded, then, by reading this dialogue between the two men -- masters in their fields. This book reviews Walter Murch's professional life and along the way, provides a look at the history of film itself from the one-dimensional nature of its birth to the multi-dimensional layers of sight and sound available today. Murch has made scientific and visceral contributions to the medium, some of which are described in the book, bringing to even more life for the reader some of the best films of the ages.
If you care about good films, if you are interested in learning the art of movie editing or soundscape creation, or if you love words and how they can be used to enlighten, I recommend this book of Conversations. ... Read more

Great book
Though this is a text book, it's filled with a lot of great information.It's technical, but it also gets into the mindset and emotional state of being a director.I highly recommend it.

Good, broad basis for studying Directing
This is a great textbook if you're new to Directing and looking for a txt that covers the totality of directing, not simply something more specific, say, a text on directing the actor (the secion covering this is only about 10 or so pages). This is a very broad based text. A directory to directing.

You can't go wrong with this but if you're seeking something more fine tuned, you may want to sharpen your search. This books if for those who want to be briefed in all areas of directing, not just one specific area.

A good starter book for new directors.

A must have for directors
This is a directing class in a book. Is it the only book on directing you will ever need? It's pretty close to it. It has some great exercises that should be done, don't skip a single one. If you want to be a director or already are, this is a book that will always serve you. You can read it for the first film you do and read it for the 50th film you do and it will take your skill to the next level. Great resource at any level.

valuable, technical text
Rabiger's book was introduced to me while I was studying directing in an MFA program for film making.It is a technically sound book, and early exercises help aspiring directors begin to understand themselves and the types of stories they are best suited to tell. Then it works well in going intoin depth analysis of break down of films into department, and the process to work within a large group of creatives to achieve the goal of the film.

An excellent reference for any filmmaker!!!
I would like to briefly state that Michael R.'s work is well conceived and his book is a must read for any filmmaker that is interested in developing a serious insight. Some books leave you sometimes wanting more or needing to seek out the missing pieces in other texts; Rabiger goes deep and draws in readers with a mass of useful info for filmmakers that i have come to greatly appreciate. ...
