Product Description
Peter and Amy have moved to a small town. Their parents believe it will help the family grow closer to God. The children are on summer vacation and are very bored. When they finally get a chance to do something fun with their youth group, the adventure turns out much different than they could ever have imagined! Join Peter and Amy as they discover the beauty and glory of their Lord and learn a bit about themselves along the way. (From back cover)

Christian Parents, Teachers, grandparents: This book is intended to supply the need for Christian literature that can be easily read by children in the first and second grades. However, we have found that children of various ages greatly enjoy this series. Episode 1 is the first in a series of many to come. Our hope is that these stories can provide a safe and consistent Christian reading environment to replace the secular alternatives available.

Finally, the nature of this series is very biblical in content and functions fundamentally as a children's bible commentary on the sections (in Episode 1, the commentary is on the Creation story from Genesis). There is exegesis that they can understand, principles to think about and application to everyday life. A much needed tool in today's growing anti-Christian atmosphere. ... Read more

Product Description
In this age ofglobalization challenges--from economic uncertainty to emerging markets--there are no mapped out answers for the international manager. Global Explorers guides the global manager from the periphery to the center stage of international business leadership.

In a 1997 survey of Fortune 500 firmsconducted by authors J. Stewart Black, Allen J. Morrison and Hal B. Gregersen, virtually all companies indicated there was a severe shortage of global leaders. The demand for competent global leaders far outstrips the supply.Global Explorers provides the skills and outlines the competencies future global managers need to fill the leadership gap.

Using extensive research, real-life examples, and 130 in-depth interviews with senior executives representing 50 global companies, including IBM, Disney, Exxon and Sony, Global Explorers suggests the reasons for the global leadership shortage, and identifies the necessary skills to compete in the international marketplace.

The authors associate three basic and necessary competencies to teach the global managers of tomorrow :
Strong Character to acquire the trust and goodwill of people around the world
Duality to embrace conflicting priorities and manage overwhelming uncertainty
Savvy to provide a clear business sense of what needs to be done and how to access the resources to make it happen

For managers who want to safeguard their corporate future in these changing times, Global Explorers will help them develop a personal program for developing and balancing the skills they need to become successful global leaders. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Realistic view of development as an expat
This book is valuable for two key insights.First, it highlights the difficulties with global development. It is very difficult and expensive to send promising leaders abroad. Many execs fail abroad. Those that succeed find their organizations back home aren't ready to utilize their new talents. This is a grim reminder of a key roadblock to corporate and personal success in global business.

The second key insight is the difference in types of assignments for various points of an exec's career.Early on working on global teams and global projects in enough. The next level of depth comes from exposure assignments of multiple months.Tactical exposure works, because it unrealistic for someone to make a deep dive into another culture in just a few months. The top level of global development requires multiple years to make an extended contribution alogn with a deeper understanding of global issues.Explaining these levels of development make this a great resource for managers looking for a guide to their own development.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent , practical book for global executives
Because of lectures on how to prepare to be a global executive, I have read several books on this subject and highly recommend this one.
The authors have performed extensive research on big multinational companies and were able to come up with a model that makes sense and is easy to understand and put into practice. The model is based on 4 sets of competences: inquisitiveness, perspective, character and savvy. After each set of competences, they use the example of an actual successful executive as a model.
In my opinion, their model is even better than the widely known model from Terence Brake in THE GLOBAL LEADER: CRITICAL FACTORS FOR CREATING THE WORLD CLASS ORGANIZATION. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Extensive and In Depth Book.
This book starts off as so many other programming books do,with a few exeptions. The history is brief and to the point. The first chapter is dedicated to getting you ready for hands on Work with Visual Basic 6, and assumes a prior knowledge of basic Windows expierience. I find this book the be an exellent
resource for anyone wanting to learn Visual Basic. The few problems I found, was the constant repeating of "How to do his..." For myself this is rather annoying but for the beginner this "feature" will help you to remember simple things such as changing properties. When you complete this book, you will be ready to start writing you own Visual Basic programs with ease. One Word of warning, chapter 4 is a very in depth look at variables. Im now sure what the auther was thinking by putting so much information in one chapter, but at least is makes for easy refrence. The way I got through chapter 4 was to take lots and lots of notes, and refer back to them as needed. How ever after working with variables through out the book there's no doubt you can master them.

4-0 out of 5 stars An unusually good book in its field
This book is far better than most of its direct competitors.

The good features of this book, rarely seen in other books, are: readable, lively, humour-laced, intelligent writing style; almost complete lack of technical errors and contentious statements (that is very rare in IT-related books); mostly-interesting and realistic problems are tackled as examples; concise and useful demonstration of error handling; good guidance on using the debugging tools; just-right discussion of Windows as an event-driven, object-oriented environment and how you need to think as a VB developer.

Amongst other features: it has good range in technical content from beginner to intermediate; it flows well from topic to topic; it covers the basics of the VB development environment; VB structures, keywords and how to use them; object-orientation theory Lite; good contents and index sections; reasonably consistent use of object/variable naming schemes throughout.

Sure, it misses some topics and overdoes others but its good on the fundamentals and intermediates.

I am a lecturer in tertiary education and use this on the course I teach. I've considered many books as student texts and this is the best for my purposes, as an adjunct to my teaching. Students certainly enjoy the style and content.

This book is part of the Blue-Black-Gold series that Coriolis run for VB. I haven't seen the Black book, but I strongly recommend the Gold Book. Keep printing them, Coriolis.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book if you're trying to pick up a 2nd language
Here is a book that I used for a first-book on Visual Basic. I liked it, but you might want to pick up a VB reference is you want a better source of info than this book provides. This book is O.K.

1-0 out of 5 stars VB for PRE-beginners and Experts
This book is for pre-beginners.It explains what the mouse is and what"Click" means.I had to wade through pages and pages of garbagelike "this is the start menu" and "this is a button" tofind any useful information. Then suddenly the author dives headfirst intoobjects and stacks.1st too slow, then too fast.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tutorial that Covers What You need to Know
By the time I made it to the end of this book I knew how to program VB 6.I was used to Java but new to the world of Visual Basic, a huge and complex world at that.To take on the task of writing a tutorial that can coversuch a topic must have been daunting indeed, but this author has done itreally well! The book was perfect for me because it assumed I knew nothingabout VB, yet didn't bog me down with general programming fundamentals. The code exercises touch most all the areas a professional programmer islikely to encounter on the job.He both holds your hand through theexercises and lets you make some steps on your own, which I thought workedvery well.If you want to learn Visual Basic 6, buy this book and work itthrough to the end...it's worth it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Teacher Resource
As a fifth grade teacher I found this simulation book to be a great resource to use in the classroom.I have used the Easy Simulation books before and this one follows the exact format. My only problem with this particular edition is that the simulation scenarios seemed to be too easy for the students to succeed.Exploration was a dangerous trade and many explorers died, became sick, or were lost during their adventures. The simulation book does have situations that allow students to encounter these situations but most often they can "pass" these with relative ease.Part of the fun in these activities is that "explorers" become sick, die, or lose their ship. When this did not happen the activity lost its adventurous feel. So, I modified the situations and made them much more difficult to succeed and more likely for students to encounter difficulty. This made the activity far more exciting for students. If there are other teachers who these these resources I would love to hear what modifications you made to these activities.Overall, great resource and an excellent way to bring excitement to the classroom! ...
