A lot of material
This is a great review book. I should have bought it sooner, to have more time to review everything. But, even though I didn't start studying until a few months prior I still passed!

Why all the amazing reviews?
This book is mediocre at best. At first you might think it's brilliant because it has practice problems (which is a good thing), but the formulas it uses do not match up with the formulas that are found in the FE Reference Manual (a formula book you get during the test). If they do match up, they are written differently using different, and simpler notation. This comes up a lot while doing practice problems because the book pulls out formulas from its a$$ and it seems so easy but since they're not in the formula book, you wouldn't necessarily be able to replicate it on your own. The book also uses formulas it discusses at the beginning of each chapters (and some of these are also not in the reference manual) so this all gets very frustrating.

Not Bad
This book isn't too bad of a review tool.The description states that it will take about an hour to review each chapter, but this does not include working the practice problems.If you choose to work those, as you should because the text does not provide enough information for a detailed review, it will take closer to 4 hours per chapter.Also, the solutions sometimes skip steps making it difficult to follow the logic of the solution.All in all, this is a good review resource, but plan far a head and do not wait until the month before the test to begin.

FE Review Manual
FE Exam review is split up into sections worth looking at.Passed the FE only reviewing topics which I needed.

Buy this, PASS the FE/EIT on your first attempt!!!
I was skeptical about buying a book to study for the EIT exam but at the same time did not want to go thru all my notes and figure out what's what!!So, I ordered this GREAT book, and after going over it for a few weeks, I took the EIT and passed it the first time!It is very detailed and has all the subjects that you need to know on the EIT, and it has sample exams also.If you put your time on this book for a few weeks, maybe 4 or 5, you should not have any problems during the exam.Good book, highly recommended!

A great supplement to this book for CE people will be Civil Discipline-Specific Review for the FE/EIT Exam, I'm gonna say it again, only if you're going to take the civil engineering exam on the second part of the test, you should get this.If you will only take the general FE/EIT exam, you don't really need the civil book. ... Perfect Quantitative (Quality) approach Performance and Scalability
This is one book which can cater for any section of software development work force (school/high school or undergraduate or graduate or instructor or software rofessional). The book is aptly organized and have a upbeat flow of information from beginning to ending. I would say any performance test engineer should read this book before submitting a performance test plan for any application. I would say any software developershould read this book before designing any feature. With my 14 years of experience API profiling is most over looked or given least attention in the initial design and people do patch up at end of the release. The chapter on API profiling framework should be eye opener for many brains. Amdahl's law and the case study speaks volume about the author and his experience. Effective optimization and tuning techniques can be a very handy especially for applications which are years old and still exist. Overall it was a complete quantitative, qualitative, practical approach to performance and scalability. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about performance and scalability. - Bala (Bangalore, India).

Very valuable for those who worry about performance and scalability
Performance and scalability are not the easiest engineering aspects. It requires careful thought, sincerity and knowledge of some basic representation techniques. Dr Liu does a great job in presenting these aspects. How to vary parameters, how to rely more on facts rather than emails/thoughts/perceptions, how to measure performance step by step, the importance of small but smart utilities are some of skills that are really worth picking up as soon as possible.

If you are serious about creating an enterprise class product which requires high performance, high scalability - and still should be reliable, this book would be a good addition to your library.

An excellent educational textbook on software performance
As a person who has no exposure to enterprise performance before, I greatly benefited from reading this book. It is an excellent educational textbook for me to grasp the basic concepts of software performance and scalability and master the quantitative approach to tackle any enterprise performance issues. I really like those usecase studies following each chapter, which help readers a lot to apply the abstract theory learned from each chapter to real-life scenarios. As a person who favors mathematical approaches, it is a really enlightening reading for me to see how Dr. Liu applies the queuing theory and classical probability models to solve enterprise performance and scalability measurement problems. Strong recommended for anyone who are interested in performance subject. In his future editions, I hope that Dr. Liu can cover more performance issues on virtualization environments.

Excellent coverage of the subject
I have greatly benefited by reading this book. Provides an excellent coverage of the subject.The book provides both the analytical and measurement aspects of performance and scalability.There aren't many references that cover these subjects.I felt the author could have covered some areas like - Virtualization and its effects on performance and scalability and some real world web services deployment scenarios.

Strongly Recommend!
I strongly recommend Dr Liu's "Software Performance and Scalability: A Quantitative Approach" for anyone involved in designing, constructing, testing, or managing delivery of enterprise applications.Having started as a software engineer and now leading development organizations for the past fifteen years I can attest and relate to the challenges that Dr Liu introduces in his text.Too often performance is an afterthought and implemented with adhoc processes and untrained resources.

Dr Liu delivers a well structured book that provides the quantitative foundation necessary to actually build performance into a solution and test and just as importantly, effectively tune or troubleshoot through instrumentation.The book provides a very effective blend of hard quantitative studies with practical examples yielding a book that is extremely thorough, easy to read, and informative.

comparable to Sze's book
The book should not be considered a listing of current major semiconductor devices currently for sale. Instead, it describes the theory behind the major types of devices - like a floating gate MOSFET, LED, injection laser, phototransistor, MIM diode.

Also, it explains quantum tunnelling - Fowler-Nordheim and the use of the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation for the transmission coefficient. Tunnelling is used in various devices, and the understanding given here will be perfectly adequate for many researchers.

Only about 2 years of undergraduate physics is needed as preparation for the book. Plus some electrical engineering.

The text should be compared to the classic Sze tome, Physics of Semiconductor Devices. ... Read more

Wonderful delivery
I am really very happy to get this book so early that I did not expect. The condition of the book was so nice.

I bet there are better FERMs out there
I was taking a review class and studying out of a book that wasn't really working.Someone reccomended this book.When I received this book, I was at the point that I had to do 2 chapters a day.It was a lot of work, but I stayed on schedule.I would definately reccomend 1 chapter a day if you want to have any sort of life.I really disliked the review on fluids and mechanics of materials,I did not take these classes in school, and was hoping to have short summary that would give me an idea of what was going on.(No luck)The book claims to follow the NCEES Handbook, but I found I wasted a lot of time searching for the formulas.This manual does not even tell you which section it is pulling the formulas from.The real test will be when I take the test this Saturday.

Passed in my first try
Used this book to help study for the FE test in 2005. Was a great tool and helped a lot. the example questions worked very well and in the end i passed the exam on my first attempt. i have to imagine there is a new edition though.

Very useful book
I strongly recommend this book for passing EIT in the first go. I had lost in touch with some specific subject basics of engineering. I worked through this book for one month which got me on track with the 'A to Z' of engineering problem solving methods. Then I took the sample exam from the NCEES FE study materials and gradually gained confidence required to face the exam. After I passed the exam, I was just thanking Micheal R. Great book and Great delievery service from londonbooks
This book is nice if you want to have an overall review about ceramics regarding their processing and properties......Gives you probably all aspects of ceramics.....But if you want to have more focused or deep knowledge about one aspect of ceramics then this is not the book you want to refer to.....But all in all a great book to have in your collection.....

Well written for a text book!
I am taking an Intro to Ceramics course; this is the book we use. The book is actually really interesting. The author sometimes even sounds tongue-in-cheek about things! The subject matter ranges over a wide array of manufacturing processes, quality assurance, and material properties. He also throws in a lot of information about phase diagrams and grain structure/growth. I myself am not a materials engineer, but I found the book engrossing (very strange for me!). I did the study guide questions, which I thought were very well written, and the questions at the end of the text.

Two drawbacks only: 1) no answers to the study guide questions/back of the chapter questions, and 2) all the pictures are in black and white.

Modern Ceramic Engineering
This book is definetely one of the best in Ceramic Science and Engineering. It serves the very best the interest of students, academics and profecionals from a vast variety of disciplines who is working or starts working or somehow has an interest with ceramic materials. It initiates with the very basics from atomic bonding and crystalline structures, and then proceeds with processing, materials properties and performances, service life predictions, and failure analysis and mechanisms in an interconnected manner. The language is simple to follow, and the case studies are very well selected to fully understand the applications of each individual matters examined in the respective chapters.

Richerson knows a lot about ceramics
This is a pretty good introductory book to Ceramics.There are a few typos in this 3rd edition book, but that doesn't distract from the main flow of it all.There are Review questions at the end of each chapter which are supposed to help one think about what s/he just read.Sometimes, the answer doesn't really come until the next chapter, though.The Author has a good voice in his writing--it's not totally technical jargon.So overall, good book. ... Gave Me New Career Perspective
Despite the fact that this book may cause the casual reader to want to gloss over the details of the history of the A-bomb or nuclear reactors or even of electricity, for a young PhD Research Engineer such as myself, it gives greater meaning to research.In fact, it has been instrumental in spurring me towards a career in science policy and/or technology transfer, or something that involves the integration of science, policy, and business (a pursuit currently under way).The point is very clear - the best technology does not always win.This underscores the need for more technologists to understand the non-technical factors involved in product or process commercialization and to respect the democratic process, rather than being aloof about the "goodness" of "pure science".

Excellent Discourse - a wakeup call
I think this book is a wakeup call for society - for all of us to re-evaluate ourselves and recognize the role we play in the evolution of technology.I think the author brings out such a valid point of the complexity of technology, and as a scientist/engineer myself, I find it refreshing, and not a burden, to think up new ideas and view my field in light of what effect society could/would have on it, instead of just what effect it could have on society.I personally think some of the detail on nuclear power could have been avoided without the reader missing the point (but I guess you can't disregard the hand (publisher) that feeds you).I also draw attention to another book, Biomimicry by Janine Benyus, which makes the point that nature provides a model for scientific innovation.If nature was our map, then the complex picture of technology that Pool paints could be a lot clearer and brighter.

Co-evolution and Learning - Society and Technology
`Beyond Engineering' is subtitled `How Engineering Shapes Society'. It is that but it is much more. It is a book about technology and society. It is part a descriptive history and sociology of technology and part a prescriptive analysis of how society can manage technology to its best purposes. It is broken into two main parts. The first describes the technological process and shows how technologies are selected for mass utilization. The second uses this analysis and discusses the issues that have now arisen with the ascendancy of technology and its central place in society.

In discussing the technological selection process, the author Robert Pool makes much of the power of incumbency. A new technology does not arise form nothing but is developed in a co-evolution between scientific progress and societal capabilities. It is developed by human beings who live in a particular point in history and thus have their values and practices shaped in a specific manner. Any technology that is developed will have to be compatible with the social and technical attitudes prevailing at that time. Pool shows in his discussion of the development of the Watt steam engine that the engine was developed taking into full account the attitudes of the people who would have to implement and manufacture it. Watt could scientifically demonstrate the need for tight tolerances to maximize efficiency but his engine was being developed in an era of craft workman who could not see the necessity of such tolerance. Watt was compelled to set up controlled manufacturing sites where he could build machines to the required tolerances. It would have been more efficient to manufacture the engines in place with local labour but that could not be done in the ethos of that time.

Mistakes once made in the development of technology will propagate themselves in the social and technical attitudes of the people involved in its continuing development. Pool shows how nuclear power developed within the technological attitudes of military propulsion and civilian power generation. Pool shows how attitudes in these domains shaped the technological choices and how these choices were not the best either technically or commercially.Pool's analysis of the power of incumbency and the multi-armed bandit is excellent here.

The second part of the book talks of central place of technology in our society. Technology has moved far from the time of Watt. Now, technology is so complex that no one human being can be aware of all that factors that go into the development and operation of a major new invention. The implication of this is that no one can understand and predict the operation of a major invention in all circumstances. Technological risk cannot be obviated by the building of entirely predictable systems. Rather risk has become probabilistic with designs being created to hopefully prevent failures causing major loss of life or economic loss rare.

Society must decide if the risks inherent in a technology are acceptable given the benefits tha can be derived from it. Since no complex technology is predictable this acceptance must in some manner be built around a faith in our societies ability to cope with uncertainty. Since no technology can be proved safe in all circumstances, society must be shaped in such a way that it can rapidly cope with unexpected serious failures.

This analysis shows the basic disagreement between the neo-Luddites or technological pessimists and the technological optimists. Pool discusses the work of a Yale sociologist named Charles Perrow who argues that complex technologies cannot be so maintained. They are rife with un-understood emergent properties that render them unmanageable. They are so complex that they cannot be understood by any one person and therefore must be managed centrally and hierarchically by enforcing detailed operation procedures that are the result of long term research by multiple specialists. On the other hand they are prone to unexpected failures and so must be managed locally by workers who can respond to serious contingencies. According to Perrow this is a contradiction that shows that some technologies cannot be managed so as to prevent losses due to accidents. Perrow calls these `normal accidents'. This is a statement of technological pessimism and is one that calls foe the aggressive use of the `precautionary principle' in rejecting technologies that cannot be proved safe. Since this is true of most modern technologies it seems as if society must give up the benefits of modern technology in order to remain safe.

However there are many large complex technological systems that function safely. Pool uses the research of Berkeley political science professor Todd a Porte to show this. La Porte discovered may organizations that were managing large scale technologies in a very safe and efficient manner. The characteristic of these organizations is that they combine the properties that Perrow said wee incompatible. The combine a centralized hierarchical control of best practices with distributed local control able to cope with contingencies. La Porte shows how these function in the operation or the US air traffic control systems, military organizations such as aircraft carriers, large chemical manufacturing companies such as Dupont. These overlay a central concern with best practices with an educated workforce who are expected to montitor their own activities, communicate and learn.

This insight demonstrates the technological pessimism inherent in analyses like Perrow's can be overcome. Society can shape itself to be able to benefit from modern technology. Since this benefit will derive from the actions of an educated, self-initiating, learning middle class, technology can also indirectly create social good.

This is book well worth reading. One fault in the book is that Pool does not outline his argument anywhere. In no one pace does he give a clear summery of his ideas. An introduction and a final summary would have improved the book. Nevertheless this is a book this it found to be full of insight. It one that is well worth reading.

Outstanding Thematic Study of Society and Technology
Beyond Engineering is the brightest of the many shining stars that make up the Sloan Technology Series.It is easily the most educational, enlightening and thought provoking ("The One Best Way" by Kanigel being a close second) of the series, and will be the barometer by which I personally measure all future popular technology books.Mr. Pool looks at the way in which technology and society shape each other by looking at eight key elements of these interactions. These areas form the chapters of Beyond Engineering, with Mr. Pool frequently using many poignant technological case studies, biotechnology, steam powered automobiles, the Xerox Alto, and many others.The recurring case study which unites the book is that of the nuclear power industry in the U.S. Despite the non-chronological nature of this story, it is told thoroughly, using just the right amount of technical explanation to explain without overwhelming.

Indeed, Mr.Pool began his book as a history of the US Nuclear Power Industry, but changed his topic as several other authors beat him to it ("Nuclear Choices" by R. Wolfson and "Nuclear Renewal" by R. Rhodes).It is a good thing they did, otherwise he would not have looked at this as merely a case study, in which to frame socio-technological interaction.The eight areas that are covered; momentum, idea creation, business, complexity, choices, risk, control and trade-offs are very quickly paced and liberally sprinkled with very poignant references.His thematic review of the subject matter is similar to the author Lisa Jardine's histories of the Renaissance and Scientific Revolution.The most frequently referred to text is Kuhn's classic "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions."This book could be viewed as the technological adaptation of Kuhn's scientific applications.

There are no ways in which the text disappoints, and it would be difficult to endorse it any more enthusiastically than I am.This book will be of benefit to anyone that works in technology, has a general interest in that area, is curious about nuclear power, or is simply looking for a good book.

Interesting but not very profound
The author admits that he originally started out to write a book on the nuclear power industry.It is obvious that that is where his interest and knowledge lie.I found myself skipping over lots of the details of the history of this industry.His stories and observations about the origin of the electric light bulb and other inventions by Thomas Edison don't seem very profound and have been told elsewhere.Time and again he seemed to be leading the reader to a hypothesis, theory, or conclusion, but then fizzled out on it.I would recommend skimming this book and looking for the few stories or subjects that you might be interested in.

The author does make a case for examining a technology in its infancy in order to best plan how society should use it, but, given market forces and corporate greed as it is today, this is very unlikely to happen. ... Read more

Decent executive level intro
While starting to show its age, Moriarty's text is a sound introduction to the executive-level or program manager as to what his safety guys are doing, why they hold up his schedule and why he pays them so much.

For the supervised safety practitioner the text introduces common concepts but doesn't really do modern, embedded control systems justice.

The text is expensive and not what I would consider value for money.

Overall a good book with some problems.
Overall, the book does a great job of covering the many areas of System Safety. It is the best book I've found on the topic.

However, this year I started teaching from this book. And when you teach you really discoverthe shortcomings of a text. It is frustrating when the author uses acronymswithout explaination. I've also been running into minor math errors oroversights in formulas (e.g. defining a function f(x) and using 't' in theequation as the independent variable).

Great and Practical Text
This is a great book for anybody interested in vibration analysis. I have used two other vibration books in past classes but this one by far is the best one.This book is so much more practical and explains everything in plain language understood very easily.This text shows its practicality by applying MathCad, Matlab, and Mathematica in each chapter. A must have for vibration engineering students!

Great Basic Book
This book is a good book for those who are interested in a beginning study or a reference for basic formulation. It has fantastic didactic and good exercises. So it's very good for undergraduate students. Following it's references may lead one to a bright specialization.

Avoid this book.
This text is very colored by the authors way of thinking.If you think like the author it may be good for you.If not, then it is very difficult to understand.Important information needed to understand the subject is missing from the book.Nothing is tied together and each new section is a new problem to deal with.Rao's book is much better; any other book would probably be much better.

The Source on Engineering Economic Analysis
This book came highly recommended by an old professor and friend: John Eastman. John taught from this text for 5 or so years and corrected a few of the minor mistakes in the text. Although the problems are dated and it is generally used as a text for civil engineers, it is an outstanding text for comparing options. It begins in the basics, specifically developing in the student an understanding of the graphics. These graphics are an excellent tool to comprehending more advanced concepts of comparisons between options. Later as the text progresses, the author presents methods for handling inflation and depression and other difficult concepts. There are no flashy solutions here. The text is methodical and slow with a great number of problems and examples. As a chemical engineer, I found this to be an excellent text, even for the experienced professional looking for quick answers. You need this text on your shelf because there are few really good textbooks on economics for engineers

This book is written backwards!
The only useful chapter in this entire book is the last one, where the book finally asks the question "How much process/modeling/management/etc. is enough?" for a given project.A number of methodologies are presented, that combine just a few of the techniques covered in the other 15 chapters, and discussed in the context of different types and sizes of project.

The rest of the book, comprising 15 chapters, is structured as a catalog of modeling and analysis techniques but they're presented as *the* way to develop software, according to the authors.It's only until the end that those techniques are placed in a context where they make any sort of sense.

The book also uses UML to model the activities and techniques in each chapter.This is cute, but not especially helpful and occasionally confusing.In fact, this usage serves as a helpful counter-example to the idea, espoused in the book, of UML as a catch-all modeling tool.

In lieu of this book, computer science students would be well served to study a range of methodologies and projects to which they were applied, and then to dig deeper into the techniques that make up those methodologies, according to the interest and needs of each student, in other dedicated references.

It is a very good resource not only for developers
I am a Business Analyst though not totally Agile in my approach due to the nature of my projects, being small and usually takes very short time to deliver.

I am still on Chapter 5 of the book but I find the preceding chapters very valuable to anyone involved in software engineering or systems development.

I bought the 3rd Edition of the book (which is the latest - 2010) as one of my resources in Business Analysis. Although I find this book to be a very good resource, it definitely is not for someone new to software engineering regardless of your role.

No answers and too many errors.
I've just finished chapter 7.I find a lot of errors in the examples and waste a lot of time when my calculations don't match the book's.

I bought a 6th edition for $6 to study prior to the class.It isn't very pretty but it does have answers to odd numbered questions.With the 7th edition you'll have to go to the website for the answers and many of them are incorrect.I've simulated them on Pspice to prove it.

My suggestion is to buy a 6th edition... unless pretty pictures help you learn more.The text is identical and the practice problems are generally the same but in different sequence.

The tutorials on the website mharis.com are very good and I highly recommend them.

I depend entirely on the book and the website for all my learning and think it's actually a pretty good book.Generally I can learn from the book pretty easily.My opinion may change when we get to the more complicated stuff.Overall it's pretty good but could use some improvement.

RUN as fast as you can from this text book, it will haunt you.
For starters, lets look at page 46, Top says, "Find the voltage, current, and power associated with each element in the circuit of Fig. 3.14a." Hmm, FIg 3.14a??? Ohh there it is, right at the bottom! perfect! la da dee da (a few minutes later), hmm this doesn't look right.Wait a minute! This is not Fig 3.14a! This is Fig 3.15!!! Where the c%$p is 3.14a?Oh it's on the previous page.???????
This scenario pretty much depicts one of the many frustrations with this book. Circuit diagrams are almost never on the same page as the given practice question and examples; which just adds to the already confusing subject matter.
Seriously this is the worst book i have ever used for a college course period!Examples skip large steps.The author assumes the reader can read his mind.Instructions are totally out of context and unclear.No solutions are given in the back, or anywhere for that matter. The practice problems are nothing like the examples given. If you have to use this book, GOOD LUCK. you are totally on your own..
Electrical Engineers are terrible authors.

An example of an exceptionally well written text book is "Principles of Chemistry" A molecular Approach. by Nivaldo J. Tro.

Somewhat of a Problem here.
I have been trying to get in touch with someone from amazon.com.
I ordered this book once with my debit card. An hour later, I received an email that my card had been declined. The email said that my order was canceled because of this, so I used another card and my transaction went through. This was 4 weeks ago. My book came in and everything was fine.

A week ago, I received the second copy of the book that was supposedly canceled. I looked at my bank statement and I had been charged for the other book, too.

Crap book
If you're getting this book for CS 1371 at tech, don't bother. It really doesn't help at all. There's no homework or questions from the text. If you really want it, get the second edition like I did. Actually if you really want it comment and you can have mine free.

Its ok, but not what I would want
From what I can tell the book serves well to supplement the instruction I receive in class. If I were trying to learn from scratch outside the class room I might look elsewhere as the function definitions are sparing to say the least. I find my self more frequent than not looking for 'help' online in order to figure functions and their associated arguments out. If your taking a MATLAB class, you should probably pick this up; if your trying to learn from scratch look up [...] and surf the web for particular subject matter. If the book had three times as much in the way of examples and a thorough / exhaustive listing of functions, and their arguments I would probably end up keeping this for later courses where I will need to analyze data, simulate what not and make for a nice presentation.
