5-0 out of 5 stars Totally worth the $35!!!!!!!!!!
As a student of nutrition/dietetics and as a girl who has had anorexia & bulimia for about 5 years, I found this text to be insightful, motivational, and practical. It helped me see how all the nutrition info and diet guidelines I have learned as a student REALLY DO apply to ME, even though I have an eating disorder. Thinking about diet therapy, eating patterns, and other food-related behaviors from a clinical perspective has helped me step outside myself and get a clearer view of my own behaviors. The book has helped me trust my body more and be more willing to experiment with dietary changes.

This book really emphasizes the fact that Registered Dietitians treating eating disordered patients cannot double as psychotherapists but must have a strong background in psychology to be successful. Food and eating is so central to our being. All nutritionists need to be aware of the psychological reasonings behind food behaviors (especially with eating disorders!!!) so that do-able dietary advise can be given.

What I learned from this book will make me a much better RD for all nutritional problems! I think all dietetics students should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical information with a thoughtful delivery
This book provides the information that Registered Dietitians need when working with patients struggling with eating disorders. It fills in the gap between a dietitians' final internship and years of hands on experience.Marcia understands what information patients need and how to deliver it.The tone of the book is right on, helping the reader understand the supportive educational role that dietitians should provide.I wish I wrote it first! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Anorexia Unveiled
My granddaughter is suffering from anorexia, an eating disorder that afflicts many young women and older female teans. The disorder is baffling because the lay person just cannot see any logic or reason for it.Thenormal reaction of the lay person is to simply try to browbeat, shame orotherwise impose "common sense" upon the afflicted person.I andher extended family who loved and cared about this beautiful, Christianyoung woman needed to know how to help her.

A compassionate, caringChristian woman, lent me Dr. Raymond Vath's book, "Counseling ThoseWith Eating Disorders" to read. His book pulls back the curtain ofillogic and provides the reader with an explanation of the type ofpersonality that seems to be most likely to be subject to the disorder, adiscussion of the usual symptoms, and the probable causes for the onset ofthe disorder. It also suggests the approaches which are most effective inhelping recovery to occur.

Dr. Vath, who is a Psychiatrist, approachesthe counseling of eating disorders from the perspective of a strong, working faith in the principles of Christian teaching. He speaks from aposition of having counseled over a hundred patients in their recovery fromanorexia.

His book also deals in a lesser extent with bulemia, especiallyas it sometimes may be an adjunct of the recovering anorexic.

Dr. Vath'sbook is very readable and insightful.I would recommend it for any personwho has any family member or close acquaintance with the disorder.

It isalso a fairly short, small book (about 214 pages) and should be useful fromboth a professional viewpoint as well as for anyone else seeking knowledgeof the subject. ... Read more

Book Description
Over the past decade, there have been substantial and rapidly changing developments in the treatment of eating disorders. Grounded in the most recent literature, The Outpatient Treatment of Eating Disorders balances general and pathology-specific research to emphasize outpatient treatment. The contributors provide an overview of the full range of eating disorders and offer clinical recommendations for a comprehensive treatment plan for patients with these disorders.

These distinguished contributors present case studies and hands-on treatment models based on cognitive behavioral techniques. Using three vignettes-a woman with anorexia nervosa, a woman with bulimia nervosa, and a man with binge eating disorder-the authors offer practical approaches, including extensive nutritional information for dietitians, for treating these three major forms of eating disorders. Designed for all health care workers who deal with eating disorder patients, this indispensable guide will be useful for psychiatrists, other physicians, psychologists, social workers, exercise physiologists, and dietitians as well as those who suffer from eating disorders.

4-0 out of 5 stars structure the freedom!
this is a very thoughtfully organised and informative book. It covers important topics of the eating disorders in an developmental way: the past, present and future of the patient's history, as well as the developing stages of the therapy. It offers an introduction to each theme and suggests art directives (about 60 in total) as well as discusses possible themes that might appear in therapy. There is a clear emphasis on a specific structure- throughout the book chapters- which is also suggested in the process of therapy. I was a bit uncomfortable with the suggestion of using merely size A3 sheets of paper as it is not explained whether there is a reason to give specific size boundaries for the specific patients (apart from making a nice portfolio of the work at the end of therapy). The 28 figures in the book are very informative.I wish there were a few more. The bibliography is excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's the hands-on application of theory to results which makes DRAWING FROM WITHIN so essential
Drawing from Within: Using Art to Treat Eating Disorders is a fine reference for practitioner who wish to explore the therapeutic use of art with clients with eating disorders. Art therapy has been successfully used as intervention with this client group: chapters cover themes which can embrace programs, offering suggestions for creating and implementing exercises and translating results to therapy. It's the hands-on application of theory to results which makes DRAWING FROM WITHIN so essential for any working with clients with eating disorders - and for college-level libraries strong in psychology. ... I personallywatched eating disorders proliferate according to the author's predictedpattern in Spain.Twenty years ago, Spain was still a fledgling democracy, and the doors to the outside world were just opening up after the death ofFranco. The local pharmacy was stocked with traditional medicines in plainboxes.Today the shelves of the pharmacy prominently displayanti-cellulite and diet products of every conceivable variety.Side byside is the changing role of women. Now Spain has its own feminine icons, the super-women who have husbands and careers, and children, and eatingdisorders. At the same time in England, Princess Diana was trying to helpthose suffering from eating disorders, but her publicity of her ownanorexia added to the upper-class status and glamour of the disease.

Ican say the professionally critical things about this book - it iswell-organized, clearly written, well-researched, and certainly verytimely. But I am sure the author's wife and family, along with hisclinical experience, must contribute to the compassionate understanding ofindividuals suffering from eating disorders, which complements the drierbones of research throughout this work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Binge Eating Isn't Just For Women
Too often we read and hear of women with eating disorders. This book was very enlightening.I think it took a lot of courage for Ron Saxen to write this book and disclose so much of his life -- the good as well as the bad.Thank you, Ron, for taking the time to write.I hope many women and men that deal with the same issues will find answers, hope and help for themselves reading this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars BRUTALLY HONEST STORY OF ONE MAN'S STRUGGLE
When I read a blurb in NEWSWEEK a few months ago about Binge Eating Disorder and Ron Saxen's book, I was quick to pre-order the book. Binge Eating Disorder (BED)is becoming more and more common, yet, very few books address this problem. I expected THE GOOD EATER to be the salvation that held all the keys to unlock the mysteries of BED. THE GOOD EATER was a very different book than I expected. It is really the story of Ron Saxen's life and struggles and his use of food for comfort. A very difficult childhood left him emotionally vacant and lacking in self-confidence. He turned to food and gained and lost weight for years. At one point, he lost enough weight to be signed with a modeling agency and the chance for a promising career. Despite the successful start to his career, he was still overweight and unattractive in his mind. For an emotional eater, handling success can be harder than handling failure. Ron turned to food and gained weight and left his modeling career behind him. For the next 20 years he struggles with various careers, including as a stand up comedian. He even briefly joins the Marines. In a search for love and acceptance, he enters into an unhappy marriage. 20 years after his modeling career, he finds the strength and the love to turn his life around and have a proper relationship with food. The book really is not self-help in nature but the brutally honest story of one man's struggle with food. Ron tells it like it is and rarely is the story pretty. There is hope in his dedication and determination. It's hard to let go of the past and our childhoods can haunt us forever. Only in the last few pages is the issue of binge eating addressed. If you suffer from binge eating disorder, THE GOOD EATER isn't your salvation but there is comfort in knowing you are not alone. It's easy to relate to Ron's downward slide into uncontrollable binge eating. Food was his best friend and gave him temporary relief from the emotional pain of life. His journey is heartbreaking but there is hope around the corner for all of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Good Eater
Ron Saxen's The Good Eater is one of the first, if not first, books written about binge eating from the perspective of a male. When reading the book I could vividly see the events playing out and the impact on Ron and his family.

Ron's work has inspired me to move forward in my own personal journey to confront binge eating and the emotions that drive me to binge. That alone should be the true test of the book and in my opinion it passes with an A+.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
This book is about a man who grows up in a dysfuntional home and tries to make something of himself by going after all the wrong things. Number one being food and then girls, sex, jobs and even marriage. In the end though he realizes that the only thing that makes him well is realizing he will never be perfect and learning to accept himself with his flaws. I found the book very interesting. The only reason I gave it a 4 is becuase of the constant swearing. Ok, I am not a prude and I understand that at times swearing can get across the point of pain. But, the F word was used constantly and I got tired of it in the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars highly entertaining!
The inspirational book, The Good Eater, is a candid and absorbing memoir of author Ron Saxen's struggle with BED (binge eating disorder). The author's revealing recollections of his life are often hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking. The Good Eater is well paced and written in an entertaining conversational style.Highly recommended! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Success through education
I picked up this book over two years ago, and since then I have lost 55 pounds. This book was the first and most important step to beginning the process. I began binge eating - having learned it from my mother - in my early teens. It's all about the comfort & "zoning out", self-medicating if you will. I have HATED my body (and ergo myself) since the age 22, the point at which my metabolism slowed and I stopped being as active as I had been up until I got married, and the binge eating caught up with me.

This book provided the insight I needed to UNDERSTAND the disorder. I truly believe the key to overcoming any inner battle is education. I could not lose weight ("eat less, move more") on sheer willpower or for that fit-into-a-bikini mentality. Now I'm all about longevity, mental health, energy, and etc. Those are the true reasons to eat well and keep moving.

I gave this book to a friend, and now I looking for another copy to keep in my library forever, both for reference when I struggle, and to share with any of my other friends and acquaintances who comment on my new shape and want to know "How did you do it?"

4-0 out of 5 stars Overcoming Binge Eating
The book has definate guidelines for overcoming this horrid vile eating disorder. The first time I used the book I had fantastic results but as the author points out,the possiblity for relapse is great. And believe meMr. Fairburn knows what he is talking about.Recently I have gone backto the book and its concept but with no success, however, as the author points outNo program will work if theperson is not truly sincere about wanting to bring about a change. All in all: it is a good book, definately worth owning and despite the fact that THIS time I have not had the success I was looking for, I will continue to think of Christoper Fairburn as the second coming of Christ.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Book
This book had some really helpful things to help get over bingeing, I really like all the useful information, great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Help me get back on track!
I purchased Dr. Fairburn's book about 5 years ago.By faithfully writing my food down daily and following his program, i stopped binge eating for over a year!

Since that time, I have fallen off of the 'program' and am out of control with my eating again.I have tried WW, but my weight loss was only temporary and i began to binge and gained everything back.I've attempted to get back 'on the Fairburn program' several times, but I'll start keeping track and monitor my food by writing...and then, i'll start to slip and stop writing. The rest of the story goes downhill.

I know success is possible as I proved to myself by not binging for a year that i could gain control over my binging.

I want to re-dedicate myself to this program and I'm looking to gain the support of others who have this book, are just buying it or have been using it with success.

2-0 out of 5 stars Falls short of the mark
This book does offer some helpful suggestions, such as establishing a regular eating schedule, keeping track of what you eat and finding alternatives to bingeing. But I found its explanations unsatisfying on the answers to pertinent questions such as, "What causes bingeing?"The author talks about factors like gender and social class and the prevalence of dieting, but I was looking for an explanation on the physiological level, which this book does not provide.

Fairburn also dismisses the idea of carbohydrate craving as a "myth," and mentions a colleague's research that proposes fat, not carbohydrate, as the substance that binge eaters actually go for.Well, if that were true, then why don't binge eaters eat a pound of butter or drink olive oil when they binge? As a former binge eater, I can tell you that I have never done that.In fact, I have never binged on anything that was not full of simple carbohydrates such as sugar or white flour. But I have binged on lots of stuff that had no fat.I find this author to be too dismissive of a phenomenon that many people have experienced. It's like going to the doctor and having him or her tell you "it's all in your head."

The author also dismisses the idea that there is such a thing as food addiction by attempting to refute the statements of Overeaters Anonymous. Now, I have been to OA and, while the group support can be helpful, the overall approach is a failure. The OA Board itself has held meetings to try to figure out why the 12-step approach doesn't have a greater success rate with binge eaters. But Fairburn marries the concept of food addiction with OA and, through convoluted and not entirely convincing arguments, throws them both out.And we've all heard that story of the baby and the bathwater.

Finally, he says repeatedly that food avoidance causes bingeing and therefore no foods should be avoided. The point is well taken, but, considering how much stuff being sold in the grocery store is only masquerading as food, why in the world would you not avoid "Frankenfoods" that are full of sodium nitrite, artificial flavors and coloring, hydrogenated fats and so on?There is a difference between avoiding pork skins and avoiding fresh produce.

I just think this book leaves a lot to be desired.Maybe it will help some anorexics and bulimics, but it was not much help to me as a binge eater.I would recommend a book that I read just after this one called "The Schwarzbein Principle," by Diana Schwarzbein, M.D., which does give real answers on a physiological level. It also validates the carb cravings which so many, including myself, have experienced, as well as showing how to defeat them.Dr. Schwarzbein's approach has worked very well for me, whereas Fairburn's did not.

Informative on theory of food addiction. Explains physical and emotional aspects of food addiction. Easy to read with information based on scholarly research.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing!
I was really disappointed when I read this book.If you've read the 12 steps of compulsive overeating, then you've pretty much read this book.It tells you the same thing. It takes forever to get you to the place where you can create your own meal plan...and what a joke! There's no way I can stick to something like that.I would starve too death!

In conclusion, I do NOT recommend buying this book.It did not help me at all.

1-0 out of 5 stars Traditional 12 step approach
After I read the book and was very disappointed, I went on-line to write this review.I find myself agreeing completely with the reviews that gave this book a low rating. It is yet another attempt to espouse the virtues of the 12 step Overeaters Anonymous program. While I think there are good aspects of the 12 step program and that it may help some, there are many that the program simply wouldn't work for, including myself.Mainly, I think, because it mandates that you cut flour, sugar, and other foods completely from your diet. I feel that this sets a person up to fail because one ends up feeling deprived, which leads to binging. In fact there is a whole chapter in the book that talks about case studies and nearly every person mentioned has relapsed and is valiantly trying to get back to abstinence and lose the weight yet again.I would suggest that instead of working a program that obviously isn't working, they should perhaps seek another solution, maybe in the form of professional counseling.I would recommend "The Solution" by Laurel Mellin, which is a comprehensive support solution with groups and pyschologists around the country practicing the methods given in the book.I have found this method much more helpful than Overeaters Anonymous ever was.If OA is working for you, then I think that is great, but if you are like me and do not find that it fits you, I encourage you to look elsewhere. The Solution is a great place to start, and if you want to check out the website go to WWW.Sweetestfruit.com.

1-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
What a disappointment! The authors answer to binge-eating is simply eliminating all sugar, flour, fat, caffeine, or whatever your trigger foods are from your diet. Not only that, but they insist you must weigh and measure your food all the time for the rest of your life.Thats hardly what I consider freeing yourself from obsessing about food. They actually recommend keeping an emergency food kit in your car to be sure you always have measuring cups, a food scale, and several cans of safe food available to you at all times.Perhaps this is wise advice for people who are morbidly obese, but for those of us who are at a normal weight, or only slightly over, and are looking for some insight and realistic advice on dealing with compulsive/binge eating, this book is NOT the answer!

4-0 out of 5 stars So right, it scared me
The more I read this book, the more I find out about myself and my addiction. It has been so much more helpful than any of the several books I have read previously. If you know you have a binging disorder, or even just think you do, reading this book will help you find peace with it...and maybe a road to recovery from it. ... Book Description
The Overcoming Eating Disorders, Second Edition program addresses the cognitive-behavioral treatment of Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder. CBT has been proven the most effective treatment for helping patients improve their eating habits and overcome their disorder. The treatment described is divided into three overlapping phases: behavior change, identifying binge triggers, and relapse prevention. The main focus of the program is the normalization of eating. Patients use self-monitoring forms to track their eating habits on a daily basis while they work toward establishing a pattern of 3 meals and 2 snacks per day eaten at regular intervals. Once a regular pattern of eating has been established, patients move on to recognizing and eliminating their triggers for binging and purging. CBT techniques like problem-solving and cognitive restructuring help patients deal with negative mood states, faulty interpersonal interactions, and errors in thinking. The final phase of treatment consists of a review of the positive changes that have occurred during treatment, as well as a discussion of any residual problems and ways to handle setbacks or lapses. Homework exercises are assigned at each session and play an important role in keeping patients motivated throughout the duration of treatment. This newly revised and updated Therapist Guide includes expanded information regarding weight and shape concerns and an entirely new chapter on adapting the treatment for use as a time-limited, therapist-assisted self-help program.Complete with step-by-step instructions for delivering the treatment, this guide is an indispensable resource that no clinician can do without. ...
