Book Description
How are mountains formed?

What makes the air we breathe?

What causes the ocean waves?

Now kids can learn the answers to these and other questions about the earth, sea, and air through 101 fun, safe, low-cost experiments and activities that can be performed at home or in the classroom. In Earth Science for Every Kid, kids use a tennis ball and a marble to demonstrate a solar eclipse. They'll make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to understand sedimentary rock formation. And, with the assistance of a Slinky(r), they'll learn about the motion of water waves. Kids will explore the topics of rocks and minerals, crustal movement, erosion, atmosphere, weather, and more.

Each of the 101 experiments begins with a statement of purpose, followed by a list of materials, step-by-step instructions, expected results, and a scientific explanation in terms that kids can understand. Parents will be glad to hear that every activity has been pretested and can be performed safely and inexpensively in the classroom or at home.

When learning science means doing science, learning becomes an adventure!

This textbook is ideal for New York students, but students outside New York and the general reader will appreciate it as well. It is clearly written. It covers all topics which should be taught in a modern Earth Science classroom. The content is up-to date. The chapter introductions useful. The content is relevant to students and to general readers. The activities are useful. The chapter questions are thought provoking. The reading level is appropriate. The photos and illustrations are helpful and well done. My only complaint would be that there are no color illustrations. We just ordered our first set of one-hundred.

3-0 out of 5 stars Review by a Teacher
This book is neither great nor poor. Actually there are not as many choices out there for Earth Science as there are for many other Science subjects. Therefore the school districts do not have a lot of choices. I've used the book with classes. As the one reviewer says, it is not always clear about what the main points are. Though an astute student should notice key terms are in bold face type. Yet often the definition, example of the term follows its first use by many pages. I even found it a bit confusing. Though the information is in the book. Many students do not know how to study, so if it does not jump out at them they just give up. I would not ditz the book like one reviewer has. The information that is presented is in the book, but the organization and presentation is not the best. Now I do agree that much of this book seems to be dated. I think that is because it is not really in a new addition. I've seen many copies of this book with dates from 1994 to 2001 and the cover and text seems to be exactly the same. So it looks like "2005 edition" is still the 1994 edition, just a new printing.

I am glad that one reviewer was able to learn using this book. Everyone is different, and so if this book turned on the light of understanding in one student, it can't be all-bad. And it is not all that bad, I just wish there actually was a much better Earth Science textbook out there. Our local district has been using this book for many years; most of our other science texts have been changed during those years.

I am afraid I will have to take exception to the naysayer's comments about this book using the Metric System. Where has he been during the last couple hundred years? The rest of the world uses the metric system. Today, only the USA does not. True, I don't know my height in centimeters, or the distance from Los Angeles to San Francisco in kilometers. But for many other matters we use the metric system all the time in everyday life. Do you know the focal length of your normal lens on a 35mm SLR camera in inches? Probably not, it's about 2 inches (50mm). Wow, and that great 210mm telephoto lens is how many inches? As far as science education goes, you will only use "English measure" in a few introductory classes in 9th grade and below. Chemistry and Physics are all metric. You will use both systems of measure in Biology, Geology, and Medical Sciences. Physical constants are easier numbers to remember in their metric forms. Also many ideas just are not thought of in English measure. Ever heard of pound-atomic-weights for the chemical elements. Actually that would not even make sense because a pound is a unit of force and not mass. This could not be used like gram atomic weights. Does anyone remember the English unit of mass? Do let me know if you actually do find a better Earth Sciences Textbook.

2-0 out of 5 stars A good 2nd reference book
This textbook is good as a second reference in an Earth Science Class. It does cover a lot of material. As a stand-alone source of information, the book does not do a good job of explaining topics or concepts. Many subjects are described in terms and vocabulary that are only partially explained. There is also some outdated subject information. For a text that has a copyright date of 2000, they talk about the focus problem of the Hubble Telescope and the current efforts to obtain computer enhanced images. I believe Shuttle astronauts fixed the telescope in 1994.
Also, all measurements are solely in the metric system. So an American student is constantly forced to convert metric units in their head to English units in order to comprehend subject scales. When was the last time someone asked you how tall you were? If you are from the USA, do you answer in feet and inches or meters and centimeters? Trying to absorb difficult concepts is tough enough. To add a foreign scale system (for USA students), compounds the difficulty in comprehension. Learning the metric system is one thing. To use the metric system exclusively in an Earth Science book (in the United States) to teach subject material is like using an unknown foreign language to try and explain something.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best book on the market.
The questions seem a bit easy compared to to real test and there are quite a lot of typos for a published book.If you are going to publish a book and charge the price as they did, you'd think someone would proof read it?

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible!!!
Unfortunately, there are no other guides out there for a lot of the subject tests, but don't bother with this one either. It is not worth the money unless you plan on returning it like I will.It had so many ridiculous typos and errors, even in the test questions and answers, that it was difficult tosimply read. The overviews of the test objectives were incomplete, out of date and probably inaccurate. They are not the current test objectives even though it was just printed in the end of 2006.Don't waste your money or your time. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A good Card book, except for the ending
If the first book was about discovering the Oversoul, this one is about using it.

Card is great at writing drama, and his characters are always masters (or victims) of clever manipulations and roundabout plans. At the center of this drama in Call of Earth is the Oversoul, as well as another strange intelligent entity which gives the characters seperate dreams.

[spoilers below]
However, at the end of the book I felt kind of unsatisfied, because I didn't think Card fully explained Moozh's motivations for changing his mind and letting everyone finally leave the city. It kind of seemed like a cheap Grinch-like "his heart grew three times that day" moment. Also, I don't think he really explained well, through his characters, why they were willing to leave, although he attempted to do so, sort of.

Either way, it kept me interested enough to pick it up during any free time, and I'm anxious to read part 3.

I also would be interested to know what scene is depicted on the cover.

3-0 out of 5 stars Dark sequel to the lead book in the Earth series
As the Oversoul continues to fail, more strong-minded people are discovering technologies that will ultimately lead to destruction of Harmony, just like what happened on Earth forty million years ago. One such leader is General Moozh, who is primed for conquest. Basilica, home city of young protagonist, Nafai, and his family, is starting to come apart at the seams, with militant groups roaming the streets causing the people to seclude themselves, creating general unrest. Nafai, led of the Oversoul's subtle nudging, must decide the fate of Basilica and planet Harmony. Yet, The Call of Earth is not about Harmony at all. Nafai is being called to bring the human species back to planet Earth.

The author delves deep into the politics of an increasingly unstable Basilica, a matriarchal society where women control marriage and the city itself. Titles are being stripped from leaders. People are starting to abandon the carefree lifestyles of a free society. Bring into the story General Moozh, a ruthless leader of an outside force. He cannot be defeated in military maneuver, by oral discourse or by sword. He can only be welcomed into Basilica and by pure fate, his own progeny defeats and yet, seals his militant conquest. A very satisfying turn of events for the reader.

The Call of Earth is much darker than is predecessor, The Memory of Earth, often leading the characters through forced maturation, conflict and even murder, at the direction of the Oversoul. We find that the Oversoul is much more of a machine that a god-figure and is quite fallible.

Orson Scott Card is the author of science fiction and fantasy books and series and also a set of books on the "Women of Genesis".

2-0 out of 5 stars Seems like a filler if anything
After reading the first book in the homecoming saga I was fairly dissapointed in The Call To Earth. The 2nd book seemed to lack any real substance. There really is nothing going on, it seems to me that Card made this book as a filler. There are a bunch of useless characters and useless events, this book could easily be condensed to around 200 pages and be much better than it is now. Personally I did enjoy it, although I have to admit more then a few times I dosed off reading the book and skipped a few pages simply to try to stop the boredom. I am hoping this book is a build up to the 3rd book in the series, if not Im afraid the rest of the saga may be just as bad if nto worse.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sadly disappointed
I'm a Card fan and have been for decades.I love most everything he has written and re-read many of his books twice yearly. The Ender and Bean series, Songmaster, Alvin Maker, Treasure Box, The Lost Boys, Pastwatch, all are more than worthy of reading again and again and again.I even read Saints more than once and enjoyed it almost as much as the first read...and I'm not a Mormon.

The Call of Earth series is incredibly boring. There is no other word for it.I forced myself through the first two books and about half of the third and then gave up.(I bought the entire set at once, simply because I had so loved his other works.)I'll never finish the series and have put the books into my 'Yard Sale' box of books I never want to read again.

I have no idea why this is.Someone told me that 'Call' is the Book of Mormon redone in SF form and, if this is the case, perhaps Mark Twain was right.

'Call' is "chloroform in print".

3-0 out of 5 stars Morpil is pretty cool
The character of Morpil completely made this book interesting enough to finish. The General picked up the otherwise listing storyline and made it worth the read. ... Read more
