4-0 out of 5 stars So Far So Good
I was looking at different dog training books in the bookstore and came across this one. I didn't want to waste money on a book that didn't work so I tried one command (sit) before purchasing the book...I have a 6 month old Miniature Pinscher which is my first dog. He's highly energetic! I hadn't been able to get him to sit still to teach him anything. I was just happy he was doing well with the crate training. I read in the book how to teach him how to sit and actually went home and he learned in 5 minutes! My daughter couldn't believe it. I'm going back today to buy this book to help with stay and leave it and all the other necessary commands. I know its hard to judge from one experience but if you knew my puppy you'd be a believer too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good dog training book!
Excellent book. After an experience with a REALLY BAD video, this was a relief.Very useful and humane!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Puppies
I do not have much experience with dogs, so I decided to read this book. It gave a great description of why the book is useful to you, the dog owner, what supplies you'll need (leashes etc), and step by step instructions for training each behavior. It is geared for puppies, but you can use it with any age dog. My degree is in animal training and I still learned from this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A gem for any dog owner!
I had never seen this book and bought it blind on marketplace and all I can say is WOW!I wish I would have bought it sooner!!

It contains 12 chapters
~The wolfs descent
~The healthy dog
~Feeding and nutrition
~Canine structure
~Life support systmes
~The respiratoty systam
~The dogs world
~The skin
~The next generation
~The question of inheritance
~The Canine athlete
~Alternative approaches

Each chapter is very detailed with many drawings and photos of a healthy dog and problems that can arise. This book has a good section on first aid and a supply list for your kit and advice on what to do at home on while in route to the vet.Detailed instructions on bandaging variuos parts of the body and the easiest way to give medicines (liquid, pill, topical)

Chapter on how to elvuate your dogs food and what each part of the digestive system does. Also, what each ingredent in food does for your dog at diffent stages in his life (puppy, adult, senior).

Skeletal chapter very detailed showing normal bones and also problems in the bones and muscles.Detailed on many diesases that plague the bones with the appropate treatment listed.

Has a chapter devoted to the senses of the dogs and how problems in each sense affect the dog. Also covers behavioral problems in this chapter with ways to correct each problem.

Breeding chapter discusses pros and cons of breeding, spaying and neutering, natural breeding, artifical inseminaltion (verysmall section), ways to confirm pregnancy, whelping and complications.

Genetics chapter is a little more complicated, but has diagrams to help. Also has a chart of genetic defects in the dog and the mode of inheritance and age of onset.

Exercise chapter is a good outline for anyone with a sporting dog.(I have chi's so I didn't get much use from this one)

The book ends with alternative approaches showing different ways to deal with common problems.I have no idea if these work, but several vets wrote this book, so I assume it's pretty safe to say that they can't hurt, however in any medical emergency the only thing to do is rush to the vet, these are just suggestions which readers may find helpful for supportive therpy for non-life threatening problems.

Overall I rate this book very highly in my canine library.True, it is not the Mereck Vet Handbook, but for the average owner it is a great book with many photos and clear cut info.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very attractive boxer breed book covers all aspects of boxer ownership and care
The pages within this book have a very attractive setup which makes the book and the text very appealing to read. Nobody wants to read plain informative text, especially not children. The text is guided with clear, colorful images of both cropped and uncropped boxers (always short tails) as well as boxes containing extra information, expert advice, senior boxer tips and family-friendly tips for improving the relationships between children and their boxers.

Cynthia P. Gallagher did a very good job with this book. Although it does not look like such a big book it does contain a huge collection of information on boxers. It was a good idea to include the senior dog tips because you are not always buying a new puppy. You can adopt a dog that was left or rescued or still needs to be rescued. In the last case an appropriate book on dealing with rescue dogs will probably be necessary though. When I was little I did not like to read books but I'm sure that I would have loved to read this one. Also I'm sure no boxer lover can pass by this book after seeing the cutest, most beautiful boxer pup on the book cover, with his big, sad eyes that are watching you, asking to "please take me home".

2-0 out of 5 stars not much information for the money
I thought that this was an Encyclopedia but it was more just general information that anyone that has seen the dog would know, a big waste of money

2-0 out of 5 stars disjointed and incomplete
I found the section on breeds to be informative with nice pictures. The section on care and illness was severely lacking: on one page, the text just ended with no punctuation and did not continue to the next page. To find out how to take a dog's temperature was very clear, but I had to search the index to find out what that temp should be. There were instances that in case of an illness or infection, no real guides as to what the owner could do until the dog could see a vet. Just not very helpful to me at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Dogs 2004
We enjoyed your book and found it had excellent graphics, however there were a few concerns. On pg 83, it states when suffering from heat exhaustion to "bath the dog with cold water and especially drench its head" if one were to do this it would send the animal into an immediate state of cardiac arrest in shock, a condition that no owner is equiped to deal with.I think that any veterinarian would agree, the best course of action would be to slowly cool the animal with tepid water and seek immediate emergency help.As well there is a section stating how much dogs like to eat chocolate but there is no mention to the fact of it being extremely toxic. On the plus side it is nice to see that you recommended that any injured dog should be muzzled as it may bite (something that the owner may not know).

3-0 out of 5 stars A good dog book
I got this book last weekend. I can't say I have read it cover to cover, but I have taken a good look at it.

I like it!! ...I wont say the information inside it is very precise, especially concerning breed temperament, but the pictures are wonderful and give an excellent idea of what the dog will look like in real life.

It is not a heavy book, and the language is very easy to read, so I also think its a good option for kids who are beyond the picture books and want a bit more information... without over saturating them!!

2-0 out of 5 stars CAREFUL - DANGEROUS INFO
Another book by the same writer "The essential Dog Book" has under "Feeding Requirements" the following statement."Very nearly every dog loves chocolate".While true it doesn't go on to say that chocolate is DANGEROUS for dogs.I just called my vet and confirmed it.NEVER feed chocolate to your dog or cat no matter how much they like it.I cannot recomend any book by a writer that has such a dangerous error in it.It makes me wonder how well they researched and checked the rest of it.I don't know if this book also has this error in it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource For The First Time Owner
I bought this book as it was recommended by a Pomeranian owner. I found it answered all my questions, and was a great resource. Thanks to this book I am now the proud owner of my first Pom (Klondike)!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book on Pomeranians
This is a great book for Pomeranian owners are people who are thinking about owning a Pomeranian. It tells and shows the different types of poms, their colors and what some of the colors are called, for instance a pom that has two broken colors is called a parti-pom and so on. It also explains how to care for this breed of dog and how to care for their coats. It's easy to understand and helps you decide if a pom is the right dog for you. It shows a lot of pictures of different poms to help you decide what size a pom should be by the AKC standards and what size a pom should be if you are interested in showing. It also tells you about the temperament of poms and what diseases they are prone to and what to look out for. It explains how to trim their nails which is very important to poms and how to trim their coats if you want to do it yourself. I would recommend this book to anyone who owns or is thinking about owning a Pomeranian.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pomeranian book
this book is maily about getting a pomeranian but it doesn't really focus on the measurement of the crate, collar, etc.i bought this book b/c i thought it would answer all my questions but it didn't.also, it doesnt tell you much about how to groom or bath your pom or about the shedding.i had to go to the library and borrow another book which was much more helpful.if you want a lot of information about poms, do NOT get this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Seemingly comprehensive not at all
To a person uneducated about Pomeranians, you could think that this covered it all. But I bought this book in concurrence with my first Pomeranian and discovered it really wasn't all it says it is.
If you want to know about dog origins, temperment, AKC standards and cute doggy pictures it's okay, but as far as puppy care it is as basic as it gets. Stuff ANY puppy book would tell you.
Because I have looked at a lot of sources, but am a first time Pom owner, the main thing that tipped me off about this lack, is the medical chapter-which briefly describes what all puppies are vaccinated for and common puppy problems, completely failing to note hypoglycemia! Which is a SERIOUS COMMON health problem for anyone owning a toy dog.
Don't buy it

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a small book, packed with information.
This book is a good book for someone just starting out to learn more about pomeranians. It has LOTS of information to offer. ... Read more

Product Description
BORZOI - THE RUSSIAN WOLFHOUND - ITS HISTORY, BREEDING, EXHIBITING AND CAREBy Nellie L. Martin. A VINTAGE DOG BOOKS CLASSIC REPRINT Originally published in 1931, this extremely scarce early work on the Russian Wolfhound or Borzoi, is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS have republished it, using the original text and photographs, as part of their CLASSIC BREED BOOKS series. Only a handful of books have ever been written on this truly magnificent aristocrat of the canine race. This particular title is an important, complete and practical work, and the author has endeavoured to show the breed as it truly is. Its origins and history have been well researched, with information on other topics being gathered from breeders worldwide, including the authors own wealth of practical experience with the Borzoi. The book's one hundred and eighteen pages contain numerous comprehensive chapters, each being illustrated with rare vintage photographs and line drawings: Origins and History. - Famous Dogs of United States, Canada and England. - Official Standard. - Head, Body, Legs, Feet and Tail. - Coat, Colour and General Appearance. - Traits and Disposition. - Training, Feeding and Kenneling. - Preparing for the Show Ring. - Breeding Principles. - Handling of the Stud. - Questionnaires. - List of Russian Wolfhound Champions. Etc. This is a fascinating read for any Russian Wolfhound / Borzoi enthusiast or historian of the breed, but also contains much information that is still useful and practical today. Many of the earliest dog breed books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A moment in time for the Borzoi
This is a wonderful reproduction of a 1931 publication that was re-printed in 2005.

It begins with a bit about how to properly handle a new book to preserve the binding.

I loved it, the photos of Borzoi from the period and the vintage language from 1931.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the nicest dog books I read
I don't own this book, it's just in the library, but I instantly became addicted to it. The pictures are beautiful and colorful, and the info is accurate. I love the book that I can't hold it if somebody else gets the book! I make it a habit to get the book first. Too bad the book was sort of ruined by kids and the librarians won't let anybody read it because they are fixing it. I am still waiting for the book to be fixed!

4-0 out of 5 stars nice pictures and entertaining descriptions
This book is large and describes a wide range of breeds. Its descriptions of the temperments and history of the breeds is entertaining and helpful. The book however is written in British English and its focus is on breeds that the British enjoy and are familiar with.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Joyous Romp with your Favorite Fido
Larkin's book will bring out the dog lover in even the hardest of hearts:the lovable snub-nosed Pug, the jolly grinning Samoyed, and the gentle brown-eyed German Shepherd are among the many friendly faces you'll encounter in this full-color guide to dogs. A section is devoted to each breed recognized by the British and American Kennel Clubs, and all the dogs are wonderfully photographed.Dr. Larkin's summaries of the various breeds are simple and truthful, if a bit brief. Though one should not consult this book alone when choosing to participate in complicated doggy matters such as breeding, grooming, or canine health, it makes a wonderful general reference for those with a love of canines. ... Excerpt:

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Cavalier or Cav or Cavvy, as it’s often referred to by its owners, is quite a recent breed that originated in England. As a small pet spaniel, its ancestors began to be a recognized type of dog, or breed, in the late 1600’s. The Cavalier as we know it today was arrived at by the interbreeding off a number of breeds of sweet, little, pet spaniel dogs that had developed in Europe and England in the preceding centuries. This development continued with the introduction of similar dogs into breeding programs until the late 1800’s.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent info about boxers
This is a great book, with a lot of info on Boxers and dogs in general I never knew before. I disagree with the reviewers that say there is no Boxer specific info here. It tells you everything you would need to know about them in my opinion. Sure, there is some general info, but when writing about a topic so broad as "dogs", some general info is unavoidable?I highly recommend this book

2-0 out of 5 stars Very sparse
The information was very sparse and general - not particularly breed specific.Could have found the same information on the spca website...

4-0 out of 5 stars Natural boxer pics
Liked the book for my children before we got the dog so they knew what we were looking for.Especially happy so many natural ears on the boxers pictured.

2-0 out of 5 stars Why a bargain may not be a bargain?
I bought this book because it was inexpensive and, from its title, appeared to cover any boxer topic about which I might possibly care to read. While some parts of the book were interesting, the numerous typosthroughout the book were embarrassingly obvious and distracting. Also, some of the author's advice directly contradicted much of the information Ihave read from other boxer experts.I was left feeling like I would havebeen better off investing a little more money in a better quality book.

5-0 out of 5 stars briefly everything you need to know about boxers...
infact i've written all i think about the book in the subject. i've read it all in 2 days. the language is fluent and understandable. you won't regret that you've bought this book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Moderately informative
This book is very general and gives the reader a light overview. Personal opinions such as writing that some think the Shih Tzu acts like a spoiled child make me wonder if the author has some negative perceptions about thedog. This is not scientific - all dogs in this breed have differentpersonalities! It's like saying all toy dogs are yappy or that all pitbulls are mean. I picked up other negative perceptions - for example, Theauthor states that Shih Tzus are stubborn and can be hard to housebreak. This is not true in my experience. This book is informative; I only hope nonew puppy owners feel disenchanted with their new dog after they read thisbook. When housebreaking ,for example, the trainer needs to start off witha positive mindset. ... Read more
