Great Resource.Has a taste of everything from prosthodontics to full veneers to white bleaching.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good General Review of Operative Dental Principles
I graduated from dental school in 1985, and being in a specialized practice of dentistry, I needed a good general review of restorative dentistry, so I ordered this book to "bring me up to date".

I found this to be a good book for the most basic concepts of operative dentistry.I was satisfied with the book as it fulfilled my modest objectives. However, for most dentists, the procedures presented here are those that are likely practiced daily in a general dentist office.
Therefore, this is not a book for general dentists. It is a good book for dental students, for those studying to pass their dental boards, or for the specialist who desires knowlege of general operative techniques.

It is not a book to learn advanced operative dental techniques.

This is the 2006 edition, so it is already 3 years old.As fast as the dental field is changing, I recommend the latest edition if you are interested in purchase.

2-0 out of 5 stars vague and pointless
I was forced to buy this in dental school because one of the authors is the head of our prosth department's dad.She left the next year. This is the lady who made us take all our impressions in rubber base and wrote terrible test questions with either no correct answer or multiple correct answers. And yes, in case you were wondering, I'm still bitter.Oh, and the book stinks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
This book gives a good overview of implants, the selection criteria, restoration etc. For a beginner's guide this is definitely worth reading. Sometimes the text gets a little boring due to the details that a GP dentist may not be concerned with, but overall this book should be read by all dentists who plan on restoring implants. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Answers to Hard-hitting Questions
I have been a dental hygienist now for two years, and was still a little thrown back when patients hit me with questions that I just wasn't postive I knew the answer to.Ones such as:"Why does dental treatment cost so much?" or "Are you any good?" And the toughest question of all to answer, "Do you treat patients with AIDS?" These rough questions often left me fumbling to come up with a well thought out, yet correct answer. That was until I read Robin Wright's book. This book helped me to be more comfortable answering the not so easy questions that come up when I am conversing with patients, and even helped me to communicate better with the office staff as well.Because I am able to answer these questions more effectively due to this book, it has helped me to develop a better rapport with my patients, and has built up their trust in me as a dental health care provider. Reading this book has taught me to really become a better listener in general, and to understand my patients questions and concerns.Until I read this book, I never really knew how rewarding being a dental health care provider could be, because I was always nervous about saying the "right" thing. Now I am more confident in myself, and in turn I feel that my patients are more confident in me as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Answers for Tough Questions
Ever had a patient spring one of those really complicated questions at you--usually in a voice loud enough so that the entire waiting room can hear?Something like, "I see you all wear gloves now.Is one of youSICK? "This book not only helps you respond to many of the mostfrequently asked and toughest questions, but helps give you confidence inresponding to your patients, whatever the question. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for dental care professionals
This book is an excellent resource for professional dental care teams wishing to have immediate access to up to date information about preventive dental care topics. This volume also includes specifics about Internet resources, which allows dentists, hygienists and dental assistants to research key topics even further.

We especially appreciated all the information about nutrition and the role that it plays in preventive dental care - and the one that it plays in developing periodontal disease. The facts provided about sugar and sugar substitutes and how they relate to preventive dental care allow us to share relevant, up to date information with our patients about this important subject.

"Understanding Human Motivation" was another excellent chapter; armed with this knowledge, our entire dental care team can discuss the importance of regular preventive dental care with patients in ways that will encourage them to change their unhealthy behaviors and incorporate those habits that will boost their oral health. This chapter has helped us discuss the best ways to communicate information to and collaborate with our patients for the most effective results.

The book is well organized with clear goals and objectives stated for each chapter and with important concepts bolded for emphasis. The self evaluation quizzes at the end of each chapter are also quite helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Preventive dentistry
Well this book is very detailed, which can be a good thing if you are wanting to learn. Also boring to read.Overall it covers the basics very well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent,Integrative, Comprehensive & Current
I am a second year dental student and find this book to be comprehensive in its theoretical approach and practice of preventive dentistry in private and public health sectors. A university level background in chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry and dental materials are necessary to understand some of the more advanced concepts.

Each chapter beings with clearly stated objectives highlighting the subject matter that the authors consider essential. Key words and concepts appear in bold, italicized letters.Throughout each chapter there aretrue-and-false and multiple choice questions. The correct answers given as well asthorough explanations as to why the other multiple choice answers are wrong. This comprehensive approach enhanced my knowledge and understanding of the material. Each chapter concludes with a series of auto evaluation questions highlighting the essential information in each chapter. As a result, I did not have to read and then re-read each chapter.

The following topics are discussed in-depth: Introduction to Primary Preventive Dentistry and its relevance to today's dental practice; The Development and Structure of Dental Plaque, Calculus, and other Tooth-adherent Organic Materials; The Developing Carious Lesion; The Role of Dental Plaque in the Etiology and Progress ofPeriodontal Disease; Various types of Toothbrushes and Tooth brushing Techniques; Dentifrices, Mouth Rinses, and Chewing Gums; Supplemental Oral Health Self-Care; Water Fluoridation; Pit-and-Fissure Sealants; Oral Biological Defenses in Tooth Demineralization and Remineralization; Caries Activity Testing; Periodontal Disease Prevention; Sugar and Other Sweeteners; Nutrition, Diet, and Oral Conditions; Understanding Human Motivation in Oral Care; Dental Public Health Programs; Preventive Oral Health in Early Childhood; Oral Health Promotion in Schools; Preventive Oral Health Care for Compromised Individuals; Geriatric Dental Care; Primary Preventive Dentistry in Hospital Settings; and Rationale, Guidelines, and Procedures for Prevention of Plaque-associated diseases. Different age and health status groups are also considered including pedodontic, geriodontic, handicapped, and hospitalized individuals. Finally, there is a chapter on how to use risk assessment to integrate prevention into the total treatment plan.

3-0 out of 5 stars Primary Preventive Dentistry
As a practicing dental hygienist, I found this book helpful. It is a great review for all professionals in the dental field.

The book is very technical and some areas are not smooth reading.I did find a fewhelpful sections such as the one on Topical Fluoride. However, I do thinkI will refer to the Wilkins text more often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best drug reference for dentistry
I've stopped looking for the best drug reference book for dentistry; this is it.In addition to the usual descriptions for each drug, potential drug interactions with (e.g., anesthetics with vasoconstrictors) and effects on oral tissues are provided.Nowadays it seems that most people are taking at least one medication, and many, several medications; all of them are in this book to help you provide safe treatment of these many medically compromised patients.Additionally, nonprescription drug information is provided as well as for "alternative medicines" which are popular today.Suggested treatments for many oral conditions are provided, along with sample prescriptions. You can't beat this book; it's a great time-saver, as well as being complete and up-to-date with its annual revisions. A "must have" for all dental professionals.

Product Description
Viruses and viral infections are of increasing importance in oral medicine and dentistry, whether through association with particular orofacial diseases, particularly in immunocompromised patients, or in terms of cross-infection. Clinical practice, however, has frequently failed to adapt to the major advances in recent years in the understanding of the molecular biology, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of viral infections. This highly illustrated reference text bridges the gap between the research laboratory and the clinic. It provides a foundation for the understanding of relevant virology by the student or graduate in dentistry and the dental sciences. Following an overview of basic human virology, including immunology and molecular biology, the clinical aspects of viral infections are considered with particular reference to oral lesions. For each virus, the clinical features, diagnosis, management and potential for cross-infection are discussed. The final section of the book covers orofacial diseases for which there is only a tentative viral aetiology. A comprehensive bibliography is integrated with the text for ease of reference. This book is therefore an essential text for undergraduate and postgraduate dental students. It will also serve practitioners and research workers in oral virology and immunology, as a comprehensive and up-to-date source of information and ideas relating to virology in dental practice. ...
