Mr. Morris choreographs Gloria The Mark Morris Dance Group performs at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Next Wave Festival. This will become the first of sixteen seasons at BAM between 1984 and 2002. Among the dances performed are O Rangasayee and Championship Wrestling , two of eleven dances he choreographs this year. MMDG has its Kennedy Center debut, and begins its life as a touring company with engagements in Boston, MA; Washington, DC; Portland, OR; and at the Spoleto Festival U.S.A. and PepsiCo Summerfare. The company makes its first television special for PBS's "Great Performances—Dance in America" and gives its first performances at the BAM Opera House. The Dance Group makes its European debut in Vienna, and performs at the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival for the first time (2002 will mark the company’s 15th Jacob’s Pillow season). He said that, as with many folk customs, the origins are hidden in the mists of time and coloured by later perceptions, which may or may not have been correct. According to Professor Howkins, when people recorded these customs in the 1890s, they were obsessed with seeking out ancient beginnings. In the seventeenth century there had been suggestions of a connection with Moorish dancing and it was adopted as a convenient theory. It fitted in, for example, because some dancers blacked up their faces and attached bells to their legs, which was believed to be something to do with North Africa.

Extractions: This is a library of morris tunes as used by dances in the traditions of a number of different English villages. A quick browse shows that I have just about everything for Adderbury and much of Bledington . These are the principal traditions danced by Seabright . The remaining selection of tunes is inspired by the favorite dances of other teams in the SF Bay area , the West Coast, Minnesota, Virginia, and anywhere else that I've had contact. Many of these tunes are derived from published collections. Others are transcribed from tapes of performances. Some tunes exist in multiple versions that demonstrate subtle differences between the performances of different musicians, or changes over time. In an effort to be sensitive to any rights of collectors, publishers, and performers, this library is intentionally provided in the form of individual tune files, not as a single file. Obviously a programmable WWW browser can snarf the entire lot; if you do so please do not redistribute them en masse. Each tune is stored in a dialect of the abc format developed by Chris Walshaw . Tunes in abc format are human-readable ASCII text , and each consists of roughly 200 to 1000 bytes. See my page of notes on

Extractions: Old Lancashire customs are disappearing thick and fast. However Singleton Cloggers are countering that trend with their traditional music and dance. We are officially classed as a North West Clog Morris team, a rather long term for what is essentially a group of men and women keeping tradition alive and having fun, whilst entertaining people. Our team are members of the Morris Federation, an organization which brings together dancers and musicians from the many varieties of English folk dance. Reformed in the early seventies and led by a local resident, Marjorie Ward, the team again led the village gala and started to dance at other local fetes and galas. New dances were added, some named after local landmarks, all of which were created by the team. Since this time the group has had many variations of uniform, however, the clogs have remained the constant. We now have over sixteen dancers and seven musicians and travel much further a field within the UK performing with other teams in colourful? dance and music extravaganzas, though we maintain our support to our roots which is the galas of Singleton, Weeton and Poulton-le-Fylde. We continue as a mixed team, though these days the members live all around the Fylde. In order to maintain our high standards, we practice every Monday evening mostly in the village hall,. Although we practice all year round, except for a short break in December, the performance season usually runs from May to September .

Extractions: By Steve Douglas Introduction This article attempts to explain the essence of Cotswold Morris and gives some insight into the form of the dancing and how the dancers organize themselves and perform. These days most people in the United Kingdom have either seen Cotswold Morris dance, or know about it. However, it is a serious presumption to expect that everyone in the world knows what a pub is, never mind how Cotswold Morris dancing works. Some things here may be obvious to you and me but not to the majority of non-English people, in other words, most of the world. Please therefore bear with me when I say something obvious, or say something slightly inaccurate for the sake of simplicity. The Cotswold Style of Morris Cotswold Morris is not restricted to the geographical region of The Cotswolds. It is danced all over the country, and all over the world too. If you had to sum up the Cotswold style in a few phrases you would have to say that it was typified by a light, jumping style, and the use of bells, sticks and hand-kerchiefs (or wavers as they are sometimes known). The expression 'light, jumping style' is a relative term, other styles of Morris involve a heavier 'stamping rhythm' type of dance coupled with shouts, more akin to the African tribal dancing. It is relative because not all Cotswold Morris sides perform strictly 'light' jumping. Some dances for example involve heavy footwork and, especially with a double or triple team (12 or 18 dancers) the expression 'light' does not come to mind. For example, on one memorable occasion Eynsham Morris, who dance the Cotswold Style, broke the stage at the Chippenham Folk Festival dancing a double set of
