Excerpt: Kivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area (Czech: , usually abbreviated as CHKO Kivoklátsko) is a Landscape Protected Area in the Czech Republic. It lies in the western part of the Central Bohemian Region and a small part of the north-eastern Pilsen Region. Most of the area belongs to the highlands of the Kivoklátská vrchovina and lies on both banks of the Berounka river. CHKO Kivoklátsko was declared in 1978 to protect a unique area with a mosaic of species rich habitats, mainly large stretches of broadleaf Central European temperate forests. Due to this fact the area was included among the UNESCO Biosphere reserves a year prior to being declared a Protected Landscape Area, in 1977. There are many other habitats, such as dry rock steppes covering the tops of some hills. The area is also notable for its diverse geology, mainly Proterozoic volcanic rocks and Cambrian fossil-rich slates around the village of Skryje, which were made famous by Joachim Barrande. For the Serious Czechophile
While I expected some historical grounding for the "culture and customs" of the title, the history of the area was more detailed than anticipated.This was probably necessary, given the fact that Czechoslovakia and Slovakia have been passed between various European power players for centuries, each of which left its mark.The book has more of an academic bent than a "here's where to go and what you'll see" travel orientation.It is extremely thorough as regards literature, art, architecture and the like, hence I wouldn't describe this as a weekend's cursory scan, rather a resource for readers who have a serious, possibly intellectual, interest in these countries. ... If your children want to see life from a central european perspective then Humphrey's book is a must. By addressing the issues that most young people (and many adults) are interested in the reader is absorbed into the worldof a 12 year old living in the Czech Republic.
