4-0 out of 5 stars Curriculum and instruction
This is a very good book for administrators but more useful to the classroom teacher. It was required reading for one of my administration classes. However, I think this book should have been required during my methods courses. It speaks of aligning curriculum and classroom instruction. The debate is whether to frontload
(develop the curriculum and then choose the standardized test) or backload (develop the curriculum after choosing the test). The author talked about the tests measuring the children's life experiences and not totally testing subject mattter, which is why some standardized tests are bias. The role of the administrator in testing, as an instructional leader and not just a manager of people, was also discussed. This book is a must have for anyone who administers any type of test to other people. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars <Rolling my eyes>
If you are buying this text book, there is probably a 99% chance that you have to for some class. For the remaining 1% of the population, don't do it to yourself. This is THE worst text book I have EVER had to read. It is obnoxiously wordy, the vocabulary is unnecessarily Oxford Dictionary making it a very dreary, tedious read. The author takes 2 paragraphs to say what could have been said in three sentences.
If it's any consolation for those who think I'm some idiot who doesn't like to read; the teacher (58 year old PhD.) couldn't stand the book either!! ... Read more

Product Description
Teaching history should not be reciting an endless list of dead men, entombed between the covers of a textbook. Instead, Breaking Away from the Textbook offers a fascinating journey through world history. Not a comprehensive, theory-heavy guide, this book focuses on active classroom activities, methods for students to grapple with humanity's issues, and innovative ways to show students the relevance of the past to the world today. Simply put, this book makes world history fun. Soon, your students will be busy debating, thinking, applying, and learning about information that will stay with them for a lifetime. The key to this wonderful work is its incorporation of various disciplines including art, music, and writing to create a fun and active classroom. Volume 1 covers prehistory to the Renaissance and volume 2 covers the Enlightenment to the 20th century. Includes pictures and drawings, appendices, indexes, maps, and a bibliography. Appropriate for all grade levels. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Filled with ideas for the college classroom
Vol. 2 of Pahl's series covers 1600 to the present.See Vol. 1 for his earlier treatment. This book suggests activities, written assignments, and group activities for world history courses. As such it does a very good job.It takes the same dozen or so activities (quick write, pair share, poster power, talk show hosts, etc.) and applies to the Scientific Revolution, Enlightenment, Bolivar and Latin America, and many other topics. The professor can easily find something that appeals to him or her, and try it out.

The book also tries to give a very short history of some of the major events, but this can be found in many other books, as well, and it is understandably sketchy and sadly eurocentric.

Here is one interesting suggestion of the author: Protest Song - create a protest song "focused on the working and living conditions of the poor workers during the industrial revolution" (p. 79).

Recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Breaking Away from the Textbook Vol. II

5-0 out of 5 stars Comments from Distinguished Educators
An engaging, timely, and important historical account.Evans's book is perceptive and compelling, and should be essential reading for anyone interested in the history of social education.

~Wilson J. Warren, Western Michigan University,

Evans' delineation of approaches is vastly more complex and richer than those proposed by other scholars ...

~Donald Schneider, University of Georgia

Largely because it is a space for articulating competing visions of the "good society," there is no area of the school curriculum that is more contested than social studies. In his detailed and well-researched examination of a century of curricular and pedagogical reform efforts, Evans argues that the history of the field is largely a story of civil war over the purposes, content, methods, and ideology of the social studies curriculum. Evans's thesis that what began as a struggle of various interest groups has evolved into a cultural war against progressive social studies is convincing, and he points to the current, narrow disciplinary focus on history and the social sciences in today's schools as evidence. Evans concludes that the turf struggles in the field have contributed to continuing failure of curricular reform ... .Until now, social studies education lacked a satisfying, comprehensive curricular history; that this history has been written by one of the strongest critics of history-centered social studies education adds to the irony. Summing up: Highly recommended.

~E. W. Ross, University of British Columbia

Evans' work gives an historical review of the current struggle over the content and process of social studies instruction in the curriculum. It offers insight into the evolution of the current disengagement in social studies education in public school by identifying key events and people from his insider's perspective. The power of money, influence, and privilege fragment efforts for a common social studies position, both philosophically and pragmatically. Evans tries to bridge some of these differences by a shift in focus. His thesis is that social studies itself is not the target but rather the pedagogy of critical inquiry that is central to learning about historical events, political systems, social institutions, and global interactions that frame the content. With that stance, he is creating space for groups to find common ground for dialogue around issues of pedagogy. He offers multiple examples and descriptions of materials created for social studies education to make this a valuable professional resource.

~Reese H. Todd, Texas Tech University

Ronald W. Evans is Professor in the School of Teacher Education at San Diego State University. He is the author of "This Happened in America: Harold Rugg and the Censure of Social Studies" (2007, Information Age) and editor of the "Handbook on Teaching Social Issues" (1996, NCSS). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource for educators, administrators& parents
This book focusses on the whole child & team approach in helping students of various skills and abilities towards success in school. The book is comprehensive and includes reproducibles that are practical and useful for classroom use. This is an indispensable resource that aids in helping integrate different groups of students in the classroom to foster an effective and successful learning outcome for every child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be a college text
Maybe some colleges are using it as a text. I don't know. This book makes it easy to find many helpful ideas for helping all children in the regular classroom.

In many school systems, the classroom teacher and the parents have one or two meetings a year with the special education team. Here they gain insights from the team and from the psychological evaluation. These evaluations are often locked away for the sake of privacy at school although parents are allowed to have a copy. Access to the information is not easy for other teachers although it could help them address the children's needs better. This book is well worth studying and applying its suggestions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Better for Elementary or MIddle School
I have to say I was a little disappointed.I read the previous reviews and really looked forward to getting this book.My position was recently changed to a Grade 9 Algebra Inclusion Teacher and I thought this would be a great resource. There were very few math activities and none of them applied to high school curriculum. Some of the reproducables were helpful. This book is probably great for a upper elementary or middle school teacher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource Book
I am a middle school English/language arts teacher. It is a great resource book if you are or aren't involved in an inclusion classroom!I would recommend it to anyone in education!
